CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers are on the road most of this week (3 games) so only 1 home game to excite the fans – vs. Charlotte.
Charlotte Dynamo @ CapJack Rangers Rangers do most of the talking in this game – and considering the Dynamo accounted for 3 goals – that must be some talking for the Rangers!
Siltanen and Lapointe light up the scoreboard in the 1st for a 2-0 lead. Gare then gets a PP goal very early in the 2nd. Wilson gets Charlotte on the board with a SH goal 50 seconds later as the Dynamo was getting used to being shorthanded. Then Boschman scored 9 minutes later and it was 3-2 CapJack. Tookey scores a few minutes later to get it to 4-2. Then the Rangers score 4 more times in the 3rd (Gare, Dudley, Robinson and Lonsberry). Ratelle managed a Charlotte goal making the final 8-3.
Rangers managed to get 3 goals from their defensive core among the 8 goals.
Rangers had 31 Shots on Goal BUT THEY HAD 32 scoring chances.
Stars (all CAP)
1. Gare 2 goals, 2 assists
2.Tookey 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Lapointe 1 goal
Game #4 – Visiting Team: Ohio Legends
Game #4 – Home Team: Ohio Legends
Weekly Summary: 1 game, 1 win, we’ll take it with a smile.
Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: St. Clair and Capjack are next on the agenda with Rogie Vachon scheduled to play in nets for both games … should be a hoot.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Saskatoon Cyclone This game should have had a fast forward to the 3rd period although people would have not believed that Rogie Vachon had actually played well in nets for Saskatoon had they not seen it with their own eyes.

Most of the play in the first two periods was in the corners and around centre ice … not what you would consider prime areas from which to score.

Plucky former Pens’ forward Greg Malone drew blood first for St. Clair early in the 2nd period when he tipped Gilbert Delorme’s shot past the sprawled out Cyclone netminder. Rogier was not sprawled out trying to stop the puck but rather lounging back in the crease sprawled over the crossbar taking a drink when the shot came.

Probably unfair of me to pound on the old guy too much since he did actually make quite a few key saves and 24 in total. Malone’s goal was his #6 on the year.

The Cyclone drew even midway through the 2nd when Keith Acton (2) slid a rebound off a Dave Taylor shot under Mike Liut and into the St. Clair net.

The 3rd period was an exciting one if you were a Saints’ fan with wave after wave of Saints players coming in at Rogie and the besieged Cyclone defenders. The waves came in no small part due to 3 power plays for the visitors in the period, but the Cyclone kept bailing and the ship never managed to capsize even when the Saint broke in on a 3-on-1 and Vachon stoned Errol Thompson and his awesome 70s fro.

The tie-breaking goal finally came at the 12:54 mark when Wayne Gretzky basically went end-to-end with the puck and then deked out Liut. A couple of well-earned assists by Joel Quenneville and Merlin Malinowski on that goal as they played do-si-do with the puck in the Cyclone end before passing off to Gretzky.

… and that was it.

St. Clair outshot the Cyclone 11-4 in the period but couldn’t crack the Vachon wall. Egads.

Stars:
1. SAS, Acton 1 G
2. SAS, Gretzky 1 G
3. SAS, Vachon 24 saves

Not sure we deserved all three stars in a 2-1 game, but the game can’t be accused of having too much imagination.

CapJack Rangers @ Saskatoon Cyclone It’s hard to believe the goaltending was actually good in a game were both teams scored at least four goals but such was the case in the Capjack 6-4 win over Saskatoon.

OK, Vachon was kind of pure crud in the early going as he gave up 3 goals on six Capjack shots – Rod Schutt (13), Tim Tookey (3) and Danny Gare (17) – but he played well the rest of the way with only a small but costly lapse late in the 3rd period where with only 90 seconds left Rick Dudley (5) scored a back breaking goal when he snapped a rebound off Larry Robinson’s slapper into the Cyclone net to make it 6-4.

Special teams were key in this game with the Rangers’ firing on all cylinders and scoring three times on four power plays.

With the Rangers up 3-0 midway through the 1st and the Saskatoon coach clenching his buttcheeks trying to hold back and not waste Reggie Lemelin and remove Vachon from the game, the Cyclone lunch pail brigade kicked into high gear.

Kent-Erik Andersson scored #9 and then with Andersson’s checking line once again on the ice Dave Maloney slipped through the defense and into the slot in front of Dan Bouchard and scored his 6th of the year. Andersson linemate Bob Gainey tipped a Tom Laidlaw shot past Bouchard midway through the 2nd to tie it up at 3-3, but garbage goal king Steve Shutt (20) blasted the puck past Vachon (nothing garbagy about that goal) to give the Rangers back the lead on the power play at 17:59.

Risto Siltanen (6) extended the lead to 5-3 with a wrist shot from fairly far out that fooled Vachon at 4:22. Rick Vaive (11) brought the Cyclone back within one at 8:25 but that was as close as they would get. Mr. Gretzky has definitely not been a homebody of late registering one goal in the first game and going pointless in this one.

Stars (deservedly all Capjack):
1. CAP, Siltanen 1 G, 2 A
2. CAP, Schutt 1 G, 2 A
3. CAP, Tookey 1 G, 2 A

Weekly Summary: Ah well … 2 points out of 4 with Rogie in nets and actually playing well. I guess there is no choice but to take it.
Silk City Wales
Weekly Preview: The Whales have only one game at home this week, against the powerful Spirit from Pittsburgh. The Whales are having a Exorcism Night; designed to drive Spirit(s) away. And anyone that comes to the game dressed as a priest gets in for free.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Silk City Wales The Whales took control of the game early, and Warren Miller’s tip-in goal 7:47 into the second period gives Silk City a 4-1 lead. But Guy Chouinard scores twice in 1:47 span to make it a 4-3 game going into the third period. Dan Maloney tips in a Willie HUber shot 2:44 in to the the game at 4. Both teams get scoring chances in the rest of the third but Chico Resch and Mario Lessard are up the task and the games ends in a 4-4 tie.

1st Star -Guy Chouinard (PIT, 2G & A
2nd Star – Larry Murphy (SCW), G & A
3rd Star – Ron Flockhart (SCW), G & A

Weekly Summary: The Whales are pleased to get a point at home against Pittsburgh. And they were able to bank a little extra cash by means of the “priests” (who may or may not have been Whales employees) passing the collection basket in between periods.
Philadelphia Firebirds

Weekly Summary: Great week for Philly …6 out of 6 points and statement wins againts Saskatoon and Syracuse. The move of Secord into the top 6 pays dividends and Lindy Ruff shows he is a good top 6 dman. Philly hopes to continue the momentum
New Castle Ducks
Weekly Preview: The struggling Ducks have three home games this week including against strong teams in the person of Mackinac Island, Charlotte and Brooklyn. The Ducks have to jump start their offense and special teams soon to have any chance at the playoffs. New line combinations are expected in place for this week’s games.
Charlotte Dynamo @ New Castle Ducks It is the usual story for the Ducks as they are shutout until 47 seconds remained in the game and lose 3-1 to the Dynamo. The Dynamo broke a scoreless tie in the second period on a goal by ageless Jean Ratelle (4). Mike Rogers scored soon after and that was all Charlotte needed. Tom Rowe’s first of the year made it 3-0 in the third before Bobby Clarke broke up the shutout with 47 seconds left.
The Ducks outshot Charlotte 27-20 but could not solve Charlotte’s backup goalie Larry Lozinski.
Charlotte’s Laurie Boschman received a misconduct to go with a fighting major after taking on the Ducks Bobby Clarke (5 for fighting).3 STARS:

2. Tom Rowe, 1G
3. Jean Ratelle 1G
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ New Castle Ducks New Castle 3 Brooklyn 1 The Ducks pull off the upset against the heavily favored Harbor Rats. The Ducks broke a scoreless tie in the second period on a goal by Steve Kasper (7). Tony Currie (8) added an insurance goal early in the third period before Yvan Vautour (2) lit up the lamp to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead. Nick Povich spoiled Billy Smith’s shutout bid with a goal with 1:31 remaining.
New Castle outshot Brooklyn 38-25 as they dominated play.
THREE STARS:1- Tony Currie, 1 G 1 A
2- Billy Smith, 24 saves
3- Yvan Vautour, 1G
TR
Mackinac Island Moose @ New Castle Ducks The Ducks battle the Moose even for much of the game but fall 3-2 on Bill Barber’s power play goal with 8:58 remaining. Mackinack Island struck first taking the lead at 4:36 of the first period on a goal by Norm Dupont (8). Jimmy Watson beat Billy Smith 35 seconds later to give the Moose a 2-0 first period lead.
The Ducks struck back on a Bobby Clarke (11) goal at 14:50 of the first and then tied it on goal by Vautour at 16:21 of the second.
In the third, Barber broke the tie with his power play goal – and Gilles Meloche stood tall in the Moose goal to win his 11th game this season.
For the third straight game, the Ducks had the shot on goal advantage, this time by a resounding 31-19. But shooting and scoring are two different things and New Castle has done very little of the latter this season.THREE STARS:
1- Barber, 1G
2- Dupont 1G
3- Jimmy Watson 1G
Weekly Summary: The Ducks go 1-2 at home as their struggles continue
Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: The sinking Chiefs have two home games – can we turn the season around?
Mackinac Island Moose @ Charlestown Chiefs If you like offense, you’d have loved this game. If you like good goaltending, you would have vomited in your mouth.

The teams skate to a 7-7 tie, with Charlestown making an epic comeback in the 3rd, getting goals from Ray Bourque (9) at 17:50, and then Denis Potvin (12) at 18:02 to turn a 7-5 deficit into the tie.

The Moose can’t be happy surrendering a point in the final 2:10 on goals from two blue-liners (HOFers or not).

Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlestown Chiefs More terrible goaltending, but the score was a more realistic 5-4. Unfortunately, the 4 was for the home team as Brooklyn flipped the script from the Chiefs’ previous game: Smith (8) and Sutter (18) scored at 17:04 and 19:36(!!!!) of the 3rd respectively to turn a 4-3 Charlestown lead to a 5-4 defeat.

Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: Pittsburgh with 6 starters “injured” is hoping to keep their winning ways going.
Chicago Underground @ Pittsburgh Spirit Chi-town comes to our town to try to kill our “Spirit”…

1st period
Vickers on the PP makes it 1-0 Pittsburgh
Wesley ties it 1-1
MacLeish and Greschner make it 3-1 Spirit lead.
Brasar scores his 7th to cut the lead to 1, 3-2 Pittsburgh lead.
Hedberg scores his 4th to put the Spirit up 4-2.

2nd period…
Pittsburgh scores 4 more goals (5 unanswered) to make it 8-2.
Mondou gets his 6th and Chicago tries to climb back 8-3

3rd period…
Foster (7) makes it 8-4… but that is our final.

I think the difference, aside from the goaltending was Chicago was 0-5 on the PP while Pittsburgh was 4-6.

Saskatoon Cyclone @ Pittsburgh Spirit Smythe division leaders Saskatoon come to town with some young punk named Gretzky.

1st period…
Greschner (9) makes it 1-0 Spirit.

2nd period…
Gretzky (23) ties it 1-1
Vickers and Sittler score 3-1 Spirit lead
Maloney (6) scores to cut the lead, 3-2 Spirit

3rd period…
MacLeish gets his 13th on the PP to make it 4-2.
At 18:32, Richard (20) pulls the Cyclone within 1, but that’s where it will end… 4-3 Spirit win.

Vachon didn’t play very well, and St. Croix played just a little better.

Weekly Summary: Two unexpected wins this week at home as 6 starters were in the press box. We’ll take it, but don’t expect it to happen often. Rumors are we are still looking for a forward or two in a trade. Draft picks available in the right deal.
Ohio Legends
Weekly Preview: The Ohio Legends continue their expansion season as a .500 type of team. Three home games give the opportunity for the club to break out–or provide a preview for a potential fire sale.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Ohio Legends OHIO 3, Brooklyn 2

In the opening term, Gordie Roberts opens the scoring for the Legends–collecting his second goal of the year on the power play at 11:58. Bernie Federko handed out the helper on the score which went high stick side and was the fourth power play opportunity of the first epriod for Ohio.

In the second, Brooklyn knotted the scores at 2:50, as Kevin McCarthy parked his fifth goal of the year from Darryl Sutter–sidestepping a defender for the opportunity. Ohio would regain the lead less than four minutes later when Glen Sharpley picked up his fifth score with a shot from the center point through a screen.

In the third, the Harbor Rats tied the game at 3:52 when Paul Reinhart finished off a four-on-four score with a shot from the top of the left circle. The game winning goal (and final lamplighter of the night) came off the stick of Ohio’s Blair MacDonald (his fourth). It was a deflection of an Alain Cote wrister.

Statistically, Brooklyn was not rewarded for its efforts through the night. The Harbor Rats out-hit the Legends, 22-14, had more blocks, 8-4 and had more chances, 13-10. The normally over-aggressive Legends had the edge in power plays, connecting on one-of-seven, while Brooklyn did not score in its only chance.

Eddie Mio picked up the win with 20 saves, while Greg Miller took the defeat turning aside 18 shots.

Charlotte Dynamo @ Ohio Legends OHIO 2, Charlotte 1

There was a goal scored in every period of this riveting display of hockey. There was not much to say about this other than someone was going to get two points (or they’d split them).

Ohio drew blood first, when Tiger Williams picked up his 15th goal of the season on a wraparound at 14:21. The period would end with each team having put six shots on goal.

In the second, the Dynamo levelled the scores when Pierre Bouchard picked up his second goal at 2:06 with a shot from the blueline. The Legends dominated the shots in the middle frame, but were unrewarded, 17-7.

In the third, seldom-used center Billy Carroll netted his fourth goal at 8:43 with a shot from the high slot to close out the scoring. Ohio again held the shots edge at 13-8 in the period and 36-21 for the contest.

Ohio held the statistical edge in Hits (28-20), blocks (8-3) and chances (18-7). The teams were even in power play chances (zero-for-four each), penalty minutes (24 each) and fights (two apiece). Eddie Mio again took the win stopping 20 shots, while Larry Lozinski took the defeat with a 32 save effort.

Chicago Underground @ Ohio Legends Chicago 6, OHIO 2

Entering the game there had been plenty of gossip filtering in from Philadelphia about the Chicago organization about the criminal element involved with the play of the Underground. It turned out to be accurate–as Chicago jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period. Chicago scored on the first shot of the game, a wrister from Peter Stastny just 21 seconds in, got another from Per-Olov Brassar less than four minutes later and a Clark Gillies tally late in the frame. Ohio’s Glen Cochrane picked up his second goal of the year somewhere in the fray–but it was 3-1 after one.

In the second, the teams exchanged goals–as Willy Lindstrom’s fifth score on the power play six minutes in gave hope to the Legends bench. However, Mike Eaves goal with 1.4 seconds remaining in the stanza was the critical blow of this contest. Chicago held a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, Ohio dodged one bullet when a Ron Stackhouse penalty allowed Butch Goring a missed penalty shot. Chicago fans were able to settle back when Pierre Mondou’s sxith goal at 10:38 effectively ended the contest. A Ric Seiling empty-netter with 24 seconds remaining secured the victory for the Underground.

Ohio held the shots advantage, 32-24. Pete Peeters collected the win, stopping 30 shots. Eddie Mio took the loss, turning away 18 shots.

Weekly Summary: Ohio escapes the week 1-1-1. What else would you expect from a near .500 team?

The Legends realize that with needed rest games coming, that they are not going to factor into the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. It looks like the doors to a fire sale may be opening soon and that potential buyers need to get their draft picks ready!

Saint Clair Shores Saints
Weekly Preview: The Saints take on Vermont and New Castle this week.
Vermont Foresters @ Saint Clair Shores Saints Vermont comes to L’Anse Creuse Arena to play against the Saints.

Vermont scores the first goal of the game as Vail scores. Nilan ties it up for SCS. Then, on a power play, Lukowich scores. After 1, its 1-1. The Saints go on to score the remaining goals thanks to Thompson, Ftorek, and Thompson again.

SCS 4 Vermont 2

1-Thompson 2 goals
2- Nilan 2 points
3- Ftorek 1 goal

New Castle Ducks @ Saint Clair Shores Saints A wild game between the Ducks and the Saints. Ftorek and Allison exchange goals for the Ducks and Saints in the 1st period.

2nd – Allison scores again for the Ducks. Babych ties it back up. New Castle gets 3 straight goals. Lambert scores his 12th, then Allison scores on a hat trick, then he adds another goal for his 4th of the game.

Brubaker and Nilan score 2 for the Saints, and they tie the game.

Ducks 5 Saints 5

1st – Allison 4 goals – Ducks
2nd – Babych 2 goals
3rd – Ftorek 1 goal and 2 assists

Weekly Summary: SCS defeats Vermont, then ties New Castle. The Saints take 3 points.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: One home contest for the Rats this week, as Vermont comes to Brooklyn
Vermont Foresters @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Foresters jump out to a 2-0 lead but Bobby Smith’s power play goal cuts the lead in half late in the 2nd period. 34 seconds later Dale Hunter puts Vermont back up by a pair and seconds into the final period, Dale Hoganson makes it 4-1 for the visitors. More than enough for Richard Brodeur, who makes 37 saves in the win.
Weekly Summary: one home game, one loss for the boys from Brooklyn
Columbus Owls
Weekly Preview: Owls looking for the elusive home win have 2 cracks this week.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Columbus Owls Chiefs 8 Owls 5

Charlestown races to a 6-1 advantage after 2 and hold on for an 8-5 victory. Columbus shows life with a 4 goal third period but too little too late. Savard and Bourque scored 2 goals apiece as the Owls continue
to get unacceptable goal tending.

Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Columbus Owls St Clair Shores 3 Columbus 3

The Owls rallied for 2 third period goals to secure a 3-3 tie. Michel Goulet and Jim Fox got the goals for Columbus in the third period. The Saints had 3 different scorers.

Weekly Summary: Owls get 1 of 4 points as they continue to look likely to get the first pick.
Charlotte Dynamo
Weekly Preview: Charlotte hosts just one game against Charlestown as it seeks to turn around an early season losing record as December rolls in.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Charlotte Dynamo High scoring one goal affairs on the wrong end continue to plague the Dynamo and this one was no exception. Charleston wins in dramatic fashion, capturing a 6-5 win as the final buzzer was ready to sound! WITH ONLY ONE SECOND LEFT, Andre Savard who had moments before stolen the puck in his end, fires in the game winner on a give and go feed from Lanny McDonald. While defensemen Ian Turnbull (one goal) and Al Sims (one goal 2 assists) had provided firepower on the offensive end for Charlotte, the Dynamo allowed 43 shots on goal in total with six slipping past Tony Esposito (37 saves). Charlotte had rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-2 to grab a 5-4 lead at the end of the second period before Charleston stole the game in the third. Six different players account for all the Chiefs goals, including Denis Potvin.
Weekly Summary: In the last second, Charlotte coughs up a point. I need to start coaching these games.
Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: The Moose (15-10-4) host the Capjack Rangers (12-10-6) and the Firebirds of Philadelphia (17-10-1).
CapJack Rangers @ Mackinac Island Moose Rangers 4, Moose 4 – The tone is set early, as Crowder and Boudreau hook up just 3 minutes into the game. Apparently the 2 went out for drinks the night before the game and Boudreau stiffed Crowder with the tab. Payback !!!!! After all the gear is picked up, the game continues with Propp scoring just minutes later. Defenses dominate the rest of the period and it ends 1-0 Moose.

The 2nd period sees the Moose get overly aggressive and they spend way too much time in the penalty box, and on the penalty kill. The Rangers take big advantage in the period and score 3 powerplay goals (Gare 2 and Trottier), adding one even strength goal (Schutt) which is answered by the Moose (McKechnie) also on a powerplay. Tookey and Russell add to the jail time tally with a skirmish late in the period. Period ends 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

The Moose crank down on the aggressiveness and are rewarded with much less penalty time, an 11-2 SOG advantage, and the 2 goals (Barber and Lever) needed to even things up. The goal by Lever with less than 2 minutes left and the goalie pulled.

1st star – Gare 2g1a
2nd – Trottier 1g2a
3rd – Schutt 1g1a

Philadelphia Firebirds @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, Firebirds 4 – Its all Philly in the first period. Although penalties were all even, the Firebirds figure out the Moose defense and tally 3 goals (Lee, Dionne and Van Boxmeer). The Moose struggle to get Sevigny to work up a sweat, and the period ends 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

2nd period sees the painters headed to the home team locker room. But the home team responds on the ice, holding the Firebirds scoreless while the offense finds their legs. The Firebirds help out a little by putting the Moose on the powerplay 3 times, with Barber converting on one, and Propp adds one even strength to cut the lead to one. Period ends 3-2 Firebirds.

3rd period is all Philly from a SOG standpoint, as the Firebirds pummel Palmateer with 18 shots, but when it comes to goals in net, it was the Moose, and Bill Barber who made the important shots. Boudreau ties it early and Barber gives the Moose the lead 18 seconds later to make it 4-3 with a long 18 minutes to go. The lead is short lived as Maruk ties it 3 minutes later.
