Most of the play in the first two periods was in the corners and around centre ice … not what you would consider prime areas from which to score.

Plucky former Pens’ forward Greg Malone drew blood first for St. Clair early in the 2nd period when he tipped Gilbert Delorme’s shot past the sprawled out Cyclone netminder. Rogier was not sprawled out trying to stop the puck but rather lounging back in the crease sprawled over the crossbar taking a drink when the shot came.

Probably unfair of me to pound on the old guy too much since he did actually make quite a few key saves and 24 in total. Malone’s goal was his #6 on the year.

The Cyclone drew even midway through the 2nd when Keith Acton (2) slid a rebound off a Dave Taylor shot under Mike Liut and into the St. Clair net.

The 3rd period was an exciting one if you were a Saints’ fan with wave after wave of Saints players coming in at Rogie and the besieged Cyclone defenders. The waves came in no small part due to 3 power plays for the visitors in the period, but the Cyclone kept bailing and the ship never managed to capsize even when the Saint broke in on a 3-on-1 and Vachon stoned Errol Thompson and his awesome 70s fro.

The tie-breaking goal finally came at the 12:54 mark when Wayne Gretzky basically went end-to-end with the puck and then deked out Liut. A couple of well-earned assists by Joel Quenneville and Merlin Malinowski on that goal as they played do-si-do with the puck in the Cyclone end before passing off to Gretzky.

… and that was it.

St. Clair outshot the Cyclone 11-4 in the period but couldn’t crack the Vachon wall. Egads.

Not sure we deserved all three stars in a 2-1 game, but the game can’t be accused of having too much imagination.

OK, Vachon was kind of pure crud in the early going as he gave up 3 goals on six Capjack shots – Rod Schutt (13), Tim Tookey (3) and Danny Gare (17) – but he played well the rest of the way with only a small but costly lapse late in the 3rd period where with only 90 seconds left Rick Dudley (5) scored a back breaking goal when he snapped a rebound off Larry Robinson’s slapper into the Cyclone net to make it 6-4.

Special teams were key in this game with the Rangers’ firing on all cylinders and scoring three times on four power plays.

With the Rangers up 3-0 midway through the 1st and the Saskatoon coach clenching his buttcheeks trying to hold back and not waste Reggie Lemelin and remove Vachon from the game, the Cyclone lunch pail brigade kicked into high gear.

Kent-Erik Andersson scored #9 and then with Andersson’s checking line once again on the ice Dave Maloney slipped through the defense and into the slot in front of Dan Bouchard and scored his 6th of the year. Andersson linemate Bob Gainey tipped a Tom Laidlaw shot past Bouchard midway through the 2nd to tie it up at 3-3, but garbage goal king Steve Shutt (20) blasted the puck past Vachon (nothing garbagy about that goal) to give the Rangers back the lead on the power play at 17:59.

Risto Siltanen (6) extended the lead to 5-3 with a wrist shot from fairly far out that fooled Vachon at 4:22. Rick Vaive (11) brought the Cyclone back within one at 8:25 but that was as close as they would get. Mr. Gretzky has definitely not been a homebody of late registering one goal in the first game and going pointless in this one.

The teams skate to a 7-7 tie, with Charlestown making an epic comeback in the 3rd, getting goals from Ray Bourque (9) at 17:50, and then Denis Potvin (12) at 18:02 to turn a 7-5 deficit into the tie.

The Moose can’t be happy surrendering a point in the final 2:10 on goals from two blue-liners (HOFers or not).

Vachon didn’t play very well, and St. Croix played just a little better.

In the opening term, Gordie Roberts opens the scoring for the Legends–collecting his second goal of the year on the power play at 11:58. Bernie Federko handed out the helper on the score which went high stick side and was the fourth power play opportunity of the first epriod for Ohio.

In the second, Brooklyn knotted the scores at 2:50, as Kevin McCarthy parked his fifth goal of the year from Darryl Sutter–sidestepping a defender for the opportunity. Ohio would regain the lead less than four minutes later when Glen Sharpley picked up his fifth score with a shot from the center point through a screen.

In the third, the Harbor Rats tied the game at 3:52 when Paul Reinhart finished off a four-on-four score with a shot from the top of the left circle. The game winning goal (and final lamplighter of the night) came off the stick of Ohio’s Blair MacDonald (his fourth). It was a deflection of an Alain Cote wrister.

Statistically, Brooklyn was not rewarded for its efforts through the night. The Harbor Rats out-hit the Legends, 22-14, had more blocks, 8-4 and had more chances, 13-10. The normally over-aggressive Legends had the edge in power plays, connecting on one-of-seven, while Brooklyn did not score in its only chance.

Eddie Mio picked up the win with 20 saves, while Greg Miller took the defeat turning aside 18 shots.

There was a goal scored in every period of this riveting display of hockey. There was not much to say about this other than someone was going to get two points (or they’d split them).

Ohio drew blood first, when Tiger Williams picked up his 15th goal of the season on a wraparound at 14:21. The period would end with each team having put six shots on goal.

In the second, the Dynamo levelled the scores when Pierre Bouchard picked up his second goal at 2:06 with a shot from the blueline. The Legends dominated the shots in the middle frame, but were unrewarded, 17-7.

In the third, seldom-used center Billy Carroll netted his fourth goal at 8:43 with a shot from the high slot to close out the scoring. Ohio again held the shots edge at 13-8 in the period and 36-21 for the contest.

Ohio held the statistical edge in Hits (28-20), blocks (8-3) and chances (18-7). The teams were even in power play chances (zero-for-four each), penalty minutes (24 each) and fights (two apiece). Eddie Mio again took the win stopping 20 shots, while Larry Lozinski took the defeat with a 32 save effort.

Entering the game there had been plenty of gossip filtering in from Philadelphia about the Chicago organization about the criminal element involved with the play of the Underground. It turned out to be accurate–as Chicago jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period. Chicago scored on the first shot of the game, a wrister from Peter Stastny just 21 seconds in, got another from Per-Olov Brassar less than four minutes later and a Clark Gillies tally late in the frame. Ohio’s Glen Cochrane picked up his second goal of the year somewhere in the fray–but it was 3-1 after one.

In the second, the teams exchanged goals–as Willy Lindstrom’s fifth score on the power play six minutes in gave hope to the Legends bench. However, Mike Eaves goal with 1.4 seconds remaining in the stanza was the critical blow of this contest. Chicago held a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, Ohio dodged one bullet when a Ron Stackhouse penalty allowed Butch Goring a missed penalty shot. Chicago fans were able to settle back when Pierre Mondou’s sxith goal at 10:38 effectively ended the contest. A Ric Seiling empty-netter with 24 seconds remaining secured the victory for the Underground.

Ohio held the shots advantage, 32-24. Pete Peeters collected the win,stopping 30 shots. Eddie Mio took the loss, turning away 18 shots.

The Legends realize that with needed rest games coming, that they are not going to factor into the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. It looks like the doors to a fire sale may be opening soon and that potential buyers need to get their draft picks ready!

Vermont scores the first goal of the game as Vail scores. Nilan ties it up for SCS. Then, on a power play, Lukowich scores. After 1, its 1-1. The Saints go on to score the remaining goals thanks to Thompson, Ftorek, and Thompson again.

2nd – Allison scores again for the Ducks. Babych ties it back up. New Castle gets 3 straight goals. Lambert scores his 12th, then Allison scores on a hat trick, then he adds another goal for his 4th of the game.

Brubaker and Nilan score 2 for the Saints, and they tie the game.

Charlestown races to a 6-1 advantage after 2 and hold on for an 8-5 victory. Columbus shows life with a 4 goal third period but too little too late. Savard and Bourque scored 2 goals apiece as the Owls continue
to get unacceptable goal tending.

The Owls rallied for 2 third period goals to secure a 3-3 tie. Michel Goulet and Jim Fox got the goals for Columbus in the third period. The Saints had 3 different scorers.

The 2nd period sees the Moose get overly aggressive and they spend way too much time in the penalty box, and on the penalty kill. The Rangers take big advantage in the period and score 3 powerplay goals (Gare 2 and Trottier), adding one even strength goal (Schutt) which is answered by the Moose (McKechnie) also on a powerplay. Tookey and Russell add to the jail time tally with a skirmish late in the period. Period ends 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

The Moose crank down on the aggressiveness and are rewarded with much less penalty time, an 11-2 SOG advantage, and the 2 goals (Barber and Lever) needed to even things up. The goal by Lever with less than 2 minutes left and the goalie pulled.

2nd period sees the painters headed to the home team locker room. But the home team responds on the ice, holding the Firebirds scoreless while the offense finds their legs. The Firebirds help out a little by putting the Moose on the powerplay 3 times, with Barber converting on one, and Propp adds one even strength to cut the lead to one. Period ends 3-2 Firebirds.

3rd period is all Philly from a SOG standpoint, as the Firebirds pummel Palmateer with 18 shots, but when it comes to goals in net, it was the Moose, and Bill Barber who made the important shots. Boudreau ties it early and Barber gives the Moose the lead 18 seconds later to make it 4-3 with a long 18 minutes to go. The lead is short lived as Maruk ties it 3 minutes later. Bill Barber continues his hot streak and answers (hat trick) one minute later to make it 5-4 with 13 minutes to go. After that, Palmateer is up to the task, thwarting rushes and rebound shots to preserve the win.
