| Pittsburgh Spirit @ Saskatoon Cyclone | Saskatoon completely dominated this one outshooting the Spirit 40-15 in the game (including a ridiculous 14-0 in the 3rd period), outhitting them 21-9, and winning 63.9% of the faceoffs.
Of course that didn’t take into account the X-factor … Reggie Lemelin. Lemelin was de-mothballed by the Cyclone after spending the last month or so conserving energy so as not to be overplayed. He definitely wasn’t spending much energy in this game. Saskatoon led 2-1 after the 1st period in which they outshot Pittsburgh 12-4 but then when Pittsburgh got its 5th shot of the game about 4-1/2 minutes into the 3rd period all hell broke loose. Pittsburgh had a whopping 11 shots in the 2nd period but Lemelin was absolute garbage. At one point, the Spirit scored on four straight shots (Pettersson at 4:28, Huber at 4:53, Sittler at 8:27 and 10:05). Of course the Draconian goaltender usage rules being what they are and with goalies being inserted midway through games on the road willy-nilly and using up allowable games played we could only watch as Reggie shit the bed again and again and again. In the end, although badly outplayed the Spirit crushed Saskatoon 7-4. Guy Lafleur had a goal and three assists, Darryl Sittler two goals and two assists, and Jorgen Pettersson had a goal and an assist for the Spirit. Wayne Gretzky had two goals and was so ticked off he led the team with six hits. Linemate Dave Taylor had two assists. The game also had a lot of penalties but only 7 power plays in total as the teams basically just expressed their mutual dislike one on one and that was the end of it. Somewhat hilariously only one fight in the game – Lafleur vs Rick Vaive. No really. I braced myself to hear that the Flower took Vaive down with a haymaker, but it actually turned out the way that it would in real life with the Flower’s petals littering the ice. Can’t wait for Vermont … |
| Vermont Foresters @ Saskatoon Cyclone | Jofa-head Ulfie Nilsson’s shorthanded goal late in the 1st period put the Foresters up 2-0 and had the Saskatoon coach about ready to blow a gasket and by the middle of the 3rd and Vermont up 4-2 ugly mobs were forming in Saskatoon stands pelting the Cyclone players with stale Timbits and moth-eaten Canadian Tire toques.
Winding the clock back a bit, it took less than a minute into the game for the Cyclone to follow up the horrendous goaltending collapse in their 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh with another bed-crapping goaltending demonstration by Markus Mattsson as he watched helpless as Dale Hunter bore down on him on a breakaway and wristed it into the Saskatoon net at 0:50. It was Hunter’s 8th and thoughts of “Great … hear we go again” flickered into everyone’s minds. Nilsson’s short-handed goal (and Vermont’s 2nd of three shots in the period) came at 14:07 of the 1st and then they made it 3-0 and pretty much brought tears to my eyes as Reggie Leach (20) scored on a power play on his team’s 5th shot at 1:37. The Cyclone basically went through the motions for the entire period with snipers like Rick Green and Tom Laidlaw firing 100-foot shots at Richard Brodeur but at 19:24 a miracle happened and the Saskatoon checking line of Gainey-Risebrough-Andersson forced a turnover deep in the Vermont end and Bob Gainey snapped one through Brodeur’s pads with 36 seconds on the clock to make it 3-1. Vermont started the 3rd period trying to kill off Mario Faubert’s penalty for hacking Doug Risebrough’s legs, but couldn’t contain the top power play unit as Dave Taylor banked a wrist shot off Brodeur’s glove for his 27th to make it a close 3-2 and give some sudden hope. The hope lasted about five minutes and Hunter again bested Mattsson on a breakaway for his 9th of the year to give Vermont a 4-2 lead and 13:10 to go. That is when Monsieur Brodeur had a brain cramp and acted like Reggie Lemelin. From the 13-minute mark to the 18-minute mark, the Cyclone pelted him with shot after shot (18 in the period in total) until he cracked and when he cracked it was gruesome. Wayne Gretzky (37) brought the Cyclone within one on a slapshot at 13:12. Merlin Malinowski (14) capitalized on some shoddy defence to tie 18 seconds later. Marc Tardif (11) scored on a deflection at 16:52 to put Saskatoon into the lead and at 17:46 Jacques Richard (28) fired a wrist shot off Brodeur’s trapper to make it 6-4 and put the final nail in the coffin. Gretzky and Nilsson paced each other in the game with a goal and an assist each. |
| Weekly Summary: | Goaltending lapses and collapses was the Flavor of the Week in Saskatoon with the Cyclone ending up on the caca end against Pittsburgh and victimizing Richard Brodeur and the Vermont Foresters in the other for a split at home. |

The first period was a full on Donny-Brooke as every player (Not the goalies – they were hugging in the corner) received 5-minute fighting penalties.

The Ducks take a 1-0 lead into the third period only to see Tiger Williams score the tying goal at 1:01. But New Castle comes right back with a goal of their own 28 seconds later when Brad McCrimmon lit the lamp. That changed momentum as the Ducks scored three unanswered goals in rapid succession against Ohio netminder Eddie Mio. Rick Middleton (24), Yvan Vautour and the Vaclav Nedomansky on a breakaway made it 5-1 Ducks. The Ducks needed all the goals as they had their usual late minute collapse allowing Ohio to score twice in the final 2:15. Ohio could not get any closer as the Ducks skated off with a rare win THREE STARS: The Ducks outshot Ohio 39-21 including an incredible 14-0 advantage in the first period! There were 36 penalty minutes in the game and a fight between Tiger Williams (Ohio) and Yvan Vautour (New). |

Those are the teams they host. And Brooklyn is still just ahead of them in the power rankings – we won’t even discuss the Burgh – top offense and top 4 defense and #1 in power rankings. Why are these two teams in the my division?!!!! |
| Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers | The short story – each team scores twice in the 1st. Bonar (3) for Brooklyn, then Schutt (24) and Crowder (5) for CapJack before Smith (15) ties it up for Brooklyn with 4 to go. 2nd period saw things slow down as Siltanen (13) scores the only goal making it 3-2 Rangers. By now the Harbor Rats have a 23-14 lead in SOG and in the 3rd they garner a 10-3 edge. And the Rangers were making things easier for them giving them 5 PPlays, but they couldn’t convert on any. And to make matters worse for the Rats, of the 2 SOG the Rangers had in period 3, 2 of them go in the net! Mulvey (5) scores early for a 4-2 lead. Then 3 minutes in Stastny (16) gets one of those back to tighten up the game – next goal is important. Final minuter – still 1 goal separation and Dudley (7) gets the puck and finds the empty net to seemingly put the game away as it’s 5-3. No more empty net, but Brooklyn isn’t leaving town and they push and push and put one in the Rangers goal with 7 seconds left – Sutter (30). But even the Rats couldn’t get another in the remaining 7 seconds and CapJack wins 5-4! STARS (all CAP) 1. Schutt 1 goal, 1 assist 2. Dudley 1 goal, 1 assist 3. Siltanen 1 goal, 1 assist |
| Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers | Another 5-4 game! And if you take away the 7 PPs the Rangers gave Pittsburgh (and the two goals they scored out of them), CapJack would have won! But …. Danny Gare scores 3 for CapJack!! 1 in each period and the 1st and last 2 in the game. But even his hat trick was no enough to garner #1 star! Huh? Nope, he got #2. What beat his performance? Guy Chouinard – Pittsburgh wins 5-4, and Chouinard scores TWICE and assists on the other THREE for a 5 POINT GAME. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Pittsburgh then rattles off 4 straight goals – 3 in the 1st. Maloney (21), Hagman (7) and MacLeish PP (20) and set up by Chouinard. After showing his unselfishness in the 1st, he sandwiches two goals (19,20) around a Long (5) goal for the Rangers. Gare (30) then scored his 2nd goal inside the final 2 minutes of the 2nd making the score 5-3 Pittsburgh. However, the home team spirit still burned as Gare scores number 31 -3rd of the game – with 10 minutes left. But ten Pittsburgh said no more and they hold on to win 5-4. Resch did enough to win. STARS 1. PIT – As noted Chouinard 2 goals, 3 assits 2. CAP – Gare 3 goals 3. MacLeish 1 goal, 1 assist |

A first period goal by Ron Stackhouse (fourth), a second period goals by Tiger Williams (6:23-power play) and a third period tally by Brett Callighen (seventh) put the game away. Wayne Babych’s team-high 21st goal at 3:10 (powerplay) was the final score in a 3-1 Ohio victory.
Denis Herron stopped 26 shots in picking up the win, while Mike Liut turned away 27 shots in the loss. Ohio was two-for-six on the power play, while Saint Clair Shores went one-for-five with the man-advantage. |

But Charlestown kills them all and even gets a goal from Paul Gardner to grab a 1-0 lead. After Curt Giles makes it 2-0 early in the 2nd, Billy Harris finally gets us on the board with under 3 minutes left in the middle frame. Paul Reinhart ties things with his 20th of the season on our 7th power play chance before intermission and we head to the 3rd tied at 2. Anton Stastny’s goal with 3:18 left gives Brooklyn their first lead of the night, but with :24 seconds left and the extra attacker on, Andre Savard nets the tying goal for the Chiefs, and that’s how it ends, 3-3. |
| Charlotte Dynamo @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | Reinhart and Darryl Sutter score goals less than :20 seconds apart early in the final period to put the Harbor Rats up 2-1, but Charlie Simmer ties things for the Dynamo with just over 7 minutes left. Then Mike Rogers puts the visitors in front with under 5 minutes to go. But with the extra attacker on Sutter gets his second of the night to even the score with :17 seconds remaining, and that’s how it ends, 3-3. |

| Chicago Underground @ Philadelphia Firebirds | The game started an hour late from the dead chickens thrown on the ice from the philly faithful. Fitting… 1ST- Brasar takes a turnover and breaks in on Sevigny and burys the puck giving Chicago a 1-0 lead. The game is chippy from the get go and gets worse before Rick Martin gets his 4th of the year. Before the puck is dropped Houston and Holmgren square off and Houston DROPS the greatest hockey god of all time!!! But Philly makes chicago pay as Denis Maruk gets hi 25th from Dionne. Philly outshoots chicago 13-2 2nd – Once again the period starts with a break away as …ughhh Savard takes an outlet pass and blows in all alone and scored his 15th. Again before play can start Wesley and Ruff square off with ruff getting the better of Blake. And as in the 1st period Denis Maruk scores (26th) from Martin And Philly is 3-2 3rd – Philly continues to get PP chances and cant capitalize but Van Boxmeer puts Philly up 4-2 with his 8th. But Chicago wont go down without a fight and Bossy goes top shelf with his 28th and its 4-3 . Philly though wouldnt be denied as Randy Carlyle breaks in and beats Astrom high with his 7th from Dionne ‘Stars 1. Maruk 2. Van Boxmeer 3. Martin Philly goes 0-7 opn the PP |

| CapJack Rangers @ Charlotte Dynamo | Powered by its first line Charlotte skates past the Rangers in a mild upset, 5-3. Center Mike Rogers comes to life scoring two goals for first star honors and Charlie Simmer notches his 29th goal of the year. Down 2-0, the Rangers fought to tie the game 2-2 on goals by Lucien DeBlois and Grant Mulvey, but Charlotte scored two unanswered goals from Wayne Cashman and Rogers and never trailed again. Steve Schutt accounted for the Rangers other goal and added two assists. Tony Esposito recorded 27 saves for the win (.900 save percentage) and added an assist. |
| Saskatoon Cyclone @ Charlotte Dynamo | In a wild affair, the Dynamo fight to a 6-6 tie with the Wayne-Gretzky led Cyclone. Charlotte holds the Great One in this high scoring tilt to just one assist (feeding Jacques Richard for his goal that tied the game at 2-2), as six different Cyclones picked up the slack with goals. Laurie Boschman sparked the Dynamo with a game high two goals. His second put Charlotte ahead 6-5 with a late third period goal that was quickly answered with just over three minutes to play by a tally from Saskatoon’s Darcy Rota. |
| Silk City Wales @ Charlotte Dynamo | Charlotte’s bid to go undefeated for the week was dashed by a balanced attack by the Whales, as Silk City prevailed 6-4. Second period goals by Bob Bourne and Willi Plett, put Silk City ahead to stay 4-2, but four other Whales also scored. Bourne added two assists along with two hits. |
| Weekly Summary: | Despite playing better hockey against top competition, Charlotte is only able to notch three out of a potential six points. Yielding six goals apiece to Silk City and Saskatoon won’t cut it. |

| Weekly Preview: | The Buckeye State comes to the Island this week. Ohio and Columbus take on the Moose. The Moose will see how things go after injuries to Boudreau (22 pts) and McKechnie (23 pts) get some playing time for Walt Tkaczuk and Greg Sheppard. |
| Columbus Owls @ Mackinac Island Moose | Columbus 4, Mackinac Island 2 – Columbus jumps on the Moose early, Stoughton getting a goal before 3 minutes elapse. The Moose are on their heels and can’t get any offense coordinated the first period. Fortunately Palmateer settles down and no more damage to the home team in the first. Period ends 1-0 Owls.
Period 2 – The Owls gain the upper hand, solidifying their lead early, with Saganiuk scoring. The disgruntled home fans finally get something to cheer about when Kurri scores late in the period to cut the lead to 1. Four minutes later, with hopes high as the Moose attempt to even things on a power play, the Owls get a steal and a rush, converting it for a momentum killing shortie, to make it 3-1 just before the period ends. The home team responds quickly, 23 seconds later, on the same powerplay, to send the teams to the locker rooms at 3-2 Owls. The Moose comeout hot and heavy in the final period, bombarding Soetaert for most of the period. But its the Owls who put one in the net, with Payne scoring early in the period to make it 4-2 visitors. Soetaert is a brick wall the rest of the way, stopping 25 shots in the period, hanging on for the win. 1st star – Soetaert 45 saves |
| Ohio Legends @ Mackinac Island Moose | Ohio 3, Moose 2 – Things start well for the Moose, Kurri scoring just past the halfway mark in the 1st. Ohio answers late in the period with Maloney tying the game just before intermission.
2nd period sees the goalies dominate and all 23 shots by both teams are for naught, the period ends 1-1. 3rd period – Ohio takes the advantage early on a powerplay with Williams scoring. He doubles the lead 10 minutes later to make it 3-1 Legends. The Moose crank up the offense and defense, and finally get a 2nd goal with a pulled goalie and 1 man advantage, Napier getting the goal with 2 minutes left.
