| Weekly Preview: | Saskatoon faces off against Charlestown and the Ohio Legends |
| Charlestown Chiefs @ Saskatoon Cyclone | Saskatoon had the first 10 shots of the game but goaltender Glen Hanlon’s penalty for hacking at passing Chiefs’ forwards was the beginning of the end for the Cyclone.
The Chiefs’ Reg Kerr scored his 22nd goal of the year on the ensuing power play and Michel Plasse was a wall in nets for Charlestown as they went on to score pretty much at will on Hanlon in a 6-1 win. Scoring for the Chiefs were fricking Wally Weir (1), Steve Tambellini (5) on a breakaway and then Steve Tambellini (6) again on a penalty shot, Paul Baxter (2) and Wilf Paiement (21) on an empty net. The Cyclone were actually so discouraged with their goaltending in the game that they yanked Hanlon with around six minutes to go when they were down 5-0 and from then on actually managed to trade goals with Charlestown despite having no keeper. hmmm … interesting. Dave Taylor (29) got the lone goal for Saskatoon. Disappointing I suppose but oh well. |
| Ohio Legends @ Saskatoon Cyclone | The Ohio Legends and Saskatoon Cyclone were scoreless after one but then the offenses kicked into gear with the two teams trading a pair of power play goals each, but Saskatoon getting the slight edge 2-1 at even strength as the home team salvaged their two-game set at home with a 4-3 win.
Callighen (8), Kerr (14) and Federko tallied for the Legends while Acton (8), Lowe (12) and Taylor with #30 and #31 scored for Saskatoon. Eddie Mio was OK in nets for Ohio stopping 28/32 shots while Markus Mattson was 23/26 for the win. Wayne Gretzky had three assists for Saskatoon. |
| Weekly Summary: | Somehow still in the running for 1st place in its division the Cyclone continue to stroll through the season playing without a care in the world and splitting with Charlestown and Ohio. |

| Charlestown Chiefs @ CapJack Rangers | Well looks like the Chiefs are in town to blow out the home team. McKegney (20, 21) scores twice in the opening 11 minutes. Paiement helps on both of them. And they were both PP goals. Lots of bodies end up i the sin bin as each team gets 5 tries for the PP goal. And it was McKegney going in for hooking late in the 1st that allows the Rangers the chance to cut the score and Shutt (29) comes through and it’s 2-1 end of 1.
Rangers then take over as they unleash their offense and score the next 5 goals – 3 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd giving Vachon a 6-2 lead. Gare (32) gets the 1st in this streak (PP), then Schutt (26), Trottier (26), Marsh (1), and finally Siltanen (14). Score is now 6-2 with 9 minutes to go and Kallur answers the challenge scoring his 15th, but there are now just 7 1/2 minutes to go and even Vachon was able to keep the Rangers ahead as the defense only allowed 8 SOG in the 3rd. | Weekly Preview: | The last place Charlotte Dynamo hosted first-place squads Vermont and Mackinac Island this week — and used the challenging spot in the schedule to rest multiple players in the midst of a rough first season. |
| Vermont Foresters @ Charlotte Dynamo | The Dynamo which opted to rest several starters (including the second top goal scorer in the league Charlie Simmer hall of famer Gil Perreault and goalie Tony Esposito) got off to a surprisingly encouraging start — grabbing the early 2-0 lead on goals from Ron Wilson and Jean Provonost (the latter coming off the power play. But the Forresters struck for a last minute first period goal then scored three more unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 6-3 win. Mark Howe with four assists spearheaded the Vermont comeback from the blue line. Dale Hunter scored consecutive goals against Larry Lozinski to put Vermont ahead 4-2. And after a Stan Jonathan power play goal narrowed the Charlotte deficit to 4-3, Vermont center Kent Nilsson scored two goals during the last two minutes of the game (the final one an empty netter), to clinch the win. |
| Mackinac Island Moose @ Charlotte Dynamo | Turning in clearly its most surprisingly upbeat game of the season, the Dynamo, still resting multiple starters, including Perreault, Simmer, and Glenn Anderson shocked the Moose 3-0. The difference in this one was Tony Esposito who returned in nets for the Dynamo and notched 36 saves in recording his first shutout of the season. With Vermont goalies Gilles Meloche and Esposito dueling, Ron Wilson broke a scoreless tie with a power play goal four minutes into the second period. Wayne Cashman added another power play goal midway through the third period (his 15th of the year) and defenseman Sims added an empty netter with 12 seconds left. Meloche yielded no goals in even strength and recorded 20 saves. |
| Weekly Summary: | Noteworthy: Charlotte only wished it had a real backup goalie. The Dynamo (16-27) are 15-16 with Esposito and 1-11 with Lozinski in the nets. With usage issues resolved and Esposito cleared to play every contest the rest of the season, the league is being served notice this Dynamo squad will not be an easy out moving forward! |

| Weekly Preview: | The Ohio Legends continue to hold to the final playoff spot in their conference. One home game this week against Smythe Division rival Charlestown, as the Chiefs sit just two points out of a postseason berth. |
| Charlestown Chiefs @ Ohio Legends | Charlestown comes up flying in the first, as a shorthanded goal by Paul Coffey at 7:39 opens things up. Ohio levels the scores with less than three minutes remaining the frame, as Tiger Williams nets his 24th and the teams go to the dressing rooms knotted at one apiece.
The Chiefs took the lead 33 seconds into the second, when Anders Kallur picked up his 15th. Less than five minutes later, Tim Kerr tied the game at two, when he notched his 14th goal. Lanny McDonald’s 17th goal at 7:35 of the frame would be the final goal in the 3-2 Charlestown win. The Legends did everything they could to try to pull the game out, outshooting Charlestown, 25-10, over the final two frames. It was a physical game, as Charlestown delivered 25 hits and Ohio had 19. Michel Plasse got the win with 31 saves, while Denis Herron absorbed the loss–turning aside 20. The Chiefs were zero-for-three with the man-advantage, while the Legends failed to convert their only power play chance. |

Pittsburgh wins this one decidedly 7-1 to continue their torrid assault on the league, despite sitting two of their best players (the two Guy’s) as well as losing two key players to injury in the game (Vickers and Greschner). |

| Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Silk City Wales | The Harbor Rats have completely turned the tables on the Worms since last year and have dominated the familial rivalry. In this matchup, the Rats cruised along and Darryl Sutter’s 33rd of the season gave Brooklyn a 5-1 lead with 2:41 remaining in the third period. Silk City scored three goals in the last 1:28 to draw to within one at 5-4., but the last goal came as time was almost out and Brooklyn holds on to win 5-4.

| CapJack Rangers @ Philadelphia Firebirds | CapJack takes the Chicago approach and one ups Philly with its cheap play. 1st – the play pays off as Cloutier gets his 11th from Barnes and Tookey. 2nd- Philly ties it up as Van Boxmeer gets his 10th ( Dionne,Carlyle) But before the Philly faithful can sit back doen Risto …yes Risto blasts one past Sevigny to put the Rangers up 2-1. The play is costly though as Robinson leaves the game injured. 3 minytes later Lindy Ruff burys one past Vachon, his 3rd from Lee and Tonelli. | Weekly Preview: | The suddenly resurgent Ducks have 2 home game this week – one against Syracuse and the other against the powerful Pittsburgh Spirit . Ever since the Ducks changed their entire fourth line the team has been playing with more tempo and scoring more as they try to pull out a miracle and get into playoff contention |
| Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks | In a division battle against the second place Bulldogs the Ducks come away with a 6-4 win! Trailing 3-1 going into the third period the Ducks score FIVE goals to gain the come from behind victory. After Syracuse made it 4-1 at 3:11 of the third, the Ducks exploded against Syracuse netminder Don Edwards. Vaclav Nedomansky, at 4:09, make it 4-2, then David Debol (one of the new members of that fourth line) scored his first of the season to make it 4-3 with a little over 10 minutes to go. Then with 1:56 remaining defenseman Jim Schoenfeld slapped one home (from Clarke and Middleton) to put the Ducks ahead 5-4. An empty netter by Harold Snepts sealed the victory.
For the game, shots on goal were fairly even at 32-31 Ducks but in the third period New Castle had a huge 17-6 edge. THREE STARS: |
| Pittsburgh Spirit @ New Castle Ducks | Pittsburgh came into the game with the league’s best record and the league’s highest scoring team. The Ducks were 0-3 against the Spirit so far this season. In one of the biggest upsets of the season and perhaps the greatest game in Ducks history, New Castle outscored Pittsburgh in a shoot out 8-6!
It was a wild game as the Ducks scored first on a shorthanded goal (Middleton #27) only to see Pittsburgh come back with three first period goals in the span of 1 minute and 19 seconds (two by Matty Hagman and one by Steve VIckers). Trailing 3-1 as the second period began, the Ducks scored FOUR unanswered goals (Middleton, Lanz, Dave Silk (his first) and Bobby Clarke) to take a 5-3 lead. Just 1:11 after Clarke’s goal Guy Lafleur lit the lamp for the 15th time this year to make it 5-4. THen after Brad McCrimmon (5) made it 6-4, Pittsburgh scored twice to tie it (Patey and Vickers)- as the second period ended 6-6. In the third period, the Ducks broke the tie for good at he 3:20 mark when Yvan Vautour beat back up goalie Rick St. Croix who had replaced Chico Resch after the Ducks 6th goal. 7-6 New Castle. As the Spirit pressed to tie the game, it was the Ducks who sealed the result at 15:21 on Mike Allison’s 30th goal of the year as the Ducks win it 8-6. Billy Smith made 32 saves to get the win for New Castle. For the Ducks: Bobby Clarke won 15 of 21 faceoffs, Richie Dunn had 5 blocked shots and Tony Currie and Steve Kasper each had 3 assists. For Dunn, it was the second time this season that he blocked 5 shots in a game. Only one player (Turbull) has had 6 in a game and there have been only 11 other times that someone had 5. | Weekly Summary: | New Castle surprises with 4 out of a possible 4 points. The Ducks are now 16-32-6-38. They are still buried in last place 9 points out of a playoff spot. They are 5-4-1 in their last 10 and suddenly playing their best hockey of the season. With 26 games to go in the season anything can happen as New Castle’s fans root for a miracle. |

| CapJack Rangers @ Mackinac Island Moose | Rangers 5, Moose 5 – Moose come out strong, scoring the first 2 goals (Boutette and Napier) before the visitors can strike back. As the Moose gear up to score on a powerplay, Trottier has other ideas and runs off with a turnover to get a shortie and cut the lead to one going to intermission.
The momentum stays with the visitors and Gare scores early in the 2nd to even the game at 2. This apparently gets the home team riled up, and the Moose proceed to control the rest of the period, getting goals from Napier, Kurri and Ferguson (PP) to turn the tide and take a comfortable 3 goal lead to 2nd intermission. Lysiak leaves the game with a head injury. The comfortable lead becomes a nap for the home team as they apparently sleepwalk the 3rd period. No offense or defense. The Rangers take advantage and score 3 goals in the period, Trottier gets 2 more for his hat trick and Cloutier nets the deciding goal to get the tie. 1st star – Trottier hat trick |

And YES, there was free Junior’s cheesecake on hand. Your goalie has to be your best penalty killer and Chico was that as Brooklyn goes 0 for 7 with the man advantage. |

| CapJack Rangers @ Vermont Foresters | capjack comes into the bjc looking to stop the foresters. the rangers will have vachon in net while the home team will have rookie king richard brodeur. vermont completely dominates the first period outshooting the rangers 13-3 but only lead 1-0 on a late goal by morris lukowich. 30 second into period 2 and dale hunter gets sent off for holding, 15 seconds later shutt ties the game at 1. eric vail responds for the foresters with a ppg at the 8:58 mark of the period putting the foresters back up by 1. mark howe made it 3-1 with a shg while pat price was off on a double minor for high sticking. morris lukowich scored his 2nd of the game to make it 4-1 7:37 into the 3rd. capjack wasnt done though as just over a minute later the other schutt scored a ppg to make it 4-2 and at the 12:48 mark, trottier made it 4-3. but they were unable to get the equalizer even with bob murray being sent off with 2:11 left in the game. vermont outshot capjack 29-22 for the game. capjack went 2-6 on the powerplay while the foresters were 1-4. trottier had 1g 1a for the rangers. lukowich 2g, mccourt and nilsson each with 2a. |
| Columbus Owls @ Vermont Foresters | last place columbus was a welcome sight coming into the bjc with top players needing time off in a tight playoff race this gave vermont a great opportunity. howe and vail, the 2nd and 4th leading scorers, and hoganson, the foresters top shutdown defenseman, were all held out of the lineup and ron low was given the start in net. the first period saw a lot of back and forth action but no scoring. the owls had a 13-11 edge in shots. the second period saw the owls pick up the edge in play outshooting vermont 13-7 but they were only able to trade single goals, leach for vermont at 5:24 of the period and ogrodnick for columbus 3 minutes later. bob murray broke the tie early in the 3rd putting the foresters up 2-1. dale hunter added an insurance goal at 16:27 which, it turned out vermont needed as patrick stole a pass and scored with 1:18 left but vermont was able to hold on for their second straight 1 goal victory. dale hunter had a goal and assist and craig ramsey 2 assists for the foresters. ron low got his 4th win without a loss on the season stopping 34 of 36 shots. |
| Syracuse Bulldogs @ Vermont Foresters | vermonts 3rd home game of the week has syracuse entering the bjc and sees the 3rd different goalie to start for the foresters as murray bannerman will start against don edwards for the visiting bulldogs. what looked to be the toughest matchup for vermont turned out to be the most surprising as vermont dominated the game. the foresters scored 2 goals 18 seconds apart before 4 minutes were played and never really looked back adding 2 goals late in the period for a 4-0 lead outshooting syracuse 16-4. howe and foligno each scored early and reggie leach twice late in the period. dale mccourt made it 5-0 at 11:28 of the second before vermont hit a slight bump. as johnstone scored on the powerplay and then tim higgins less than a minute later to make it 5-2. despite vermont out shooting the bulldogs 17-5 for the 2nd period and now 33-9 in the game. curt fraser scored at the 6:36 mark of the 3rd making it 5-3 but that only served to wake up vermont as they ended up outshooting the visitors 12-9 for the 3rd and added 2 more goals late by nilsson and leachs 3rd of the game for the 7-3 final score. mccourt added 1g 3a, vail 3 assists and murray and faubert 2 assists. |
