CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: One home game this week – still trying to stay close to Pittsburgh and ahead of the surging Brooklyn Harbor Rats. We host St. Clair Shores
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ CapJack Rangers Rangers are nailed for 22 minutes of penalties – which amount to 3 Power Play opportunities for the Saints. And the Saints are whistled for 16 minutes of penalties – and the Rangers get NO Power Plays out it. Lots of roughing and fighting and 10 minutes of the Saints time was Clement for Unsportsmanlike (after he got roughed up by DeBlois. Anyway, the fans came for a fight, but a hockey game did break out eventually. Midway through the first, seldom used Roulston got his 1st of the season (and the games 1st goal). Rangers lead 1-0 after 1. 39 seconds into Period 2, MacMillan scores making it 2-0. The low lines are hitting the net! But then Sutter and Wilson score a few minutes later and suddenly it’s 2-2. But late in the period, Trottier finds the net to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead heading into the 3rd.
Just over 5 minutes left, Rangers have been holding tight- the Saints are coming hard – and it pays off for them when Wilson scores his 2nd of the game. 3-3 with 5 to go… So, the Rangers call on Robinson to get the puck away from Saint Clair Shores – and he does as Ramage over skates the puck – Robinson to Trottier, shoots, scores. They took advantage of a defensive breakdown and the Rangers gain the advantage 4-3. 3 minutes to go – Rangers deny the Saints for the next 2 minutes, then Liut heads of the final minute and the Saints get out firing not 1 or 2 or 3 shots on goal, but 4 – and somehow Bouchard stops them all to preserve the lead and win. FINAL 4-3 CapJack.
Stars:
1. (CAP) Trottier 2 goals, 3 points
2. (SCS) Wilson 2 goals
3. (CAP) MacMillan 1 goal
In a game where statistically the Saints outplayed the Rangers – CapJac seemed to do the right thing at the right time to pull out the win.
Weekly Summary: 1 game, 1 win, but it wasn’t easy… Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!
North Carolina 89’ers
Weekly Preview: The 89ers stop home for a short one-game home stand this week, hoping to claw their way back to the top of the division after a dismal showing last week.
CapJack Rangers @ North Carolina 89’ers NC Jumps out to an early lead with a Wickenheiser goal at 1:29. CapJack and the 89ers trade goals through the rest of the period and going into the second it’s 3-2 NC. NC scores 2 more in the second, chasing Dion in favor of Bouchard, but CapJack is able to get back within 2 and it’s 5-3 89ers going into the end of the third. In the last 1:30 of the game, there was a scoring frenzy. Slitanen scores to put CapJack within one with 1:10 left in the game. CapJack pulls Bouchard for the extra attacker, and the 89ers quickly score two empty-netters. With:09 left NC adds another even-strength goal to make what was a close game two minutes ago seem as though it were a blowout.

FINAL SCORE: NC 8, CapJack 4

Ohio Legends @ New Castle Ducks NEW 4 OHIO 3

The Ducks score four second period goals to gain a come from behind win. After Don Maloney put Ohio up 1-0 after one, the Ducks tied it on a power play goal by Marian Stastny in the second period. Glen Cochran then scored SHORT HANDED to put Ohio ahead 2-1. The Ducks came right back as their league best power play did it again – this time with Yvon Lambert putting the puck behind Glen Hanlon to tie it at 2-2. Stastny then broke the tie three minutes later, with his second goal of the game. Rick Middleton netted his 20th with 4:26 left in the second to get a big insurance goal. It also proved to be the winning goal as Ray Allison scored with 5:01 remaining to pull Ohio within one goal. But the Ducks defense tightened as they held on for the win despite Ohio holding a 12-8 SOG advantage in the third period.

THREE STARS:
1- NEW Marian Stastny 2 G
2- NEW Rick Middleton 1 G 1 A
3- NEW Yvon Lambert 1G

Ducks were 2-4 on the power play. Defenseman Dave Pichette had 11 PIM including one 5 minute major as the game had 2 fights. Bunny Larocque improved to 10-2-2 for New Castle. Hanlon is now 3-8-1.

Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks NEW 6 SYR 3

Reggie Leach opened the scoring with a power play goal to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. But the DUcks tied it late in the first on a goal by rookie sensation Barry Pederson. Early in the second period, Pederson scored again – his second of the game and 23rd of the season – to put New Castle ahead for good. Rick Middleton made it 3-1 later in the second before Bengt Lundholm scored for Syracuse to make it 3-2 after two. In the third, Marian Stastny made it 4-2 only to see Greg Adams score for the Bulldogs 32 seconds later to make it 4-3. The Ducks tightened things up, staving off Syracuse, and then at 18:06 Bob Bourne scored to make it 5-3. Bobby Clarke scored an empty net goal to make the final 6-3.

Larocque continues his great play, with 26 saves as he improves to 11-2-2 on the season. Ed Staniowski, in net for Syracuse, allowed 5 goals on 28 shots and is now 4-4-1

Weekly Summary: The Ducks win both home games to get the maximum four points
Ohio Legends
Weekly Preview: The Ohio Legends enter the week with a four-game winning streak. They say all good things must come to an end, but do they have to?
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Ohio Legends Ohio 3, Brooklyn 2

The Rats jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Anton Stastny and Mike Gartner. Ohio gets back in the game with a Ray Allison score in the first minutes of the second period to cut the deficit in half heading into the third.

Ted Bulley nets a power-play goal up early in the third to knot things up and Mark Pavelich’s shorthanded goal midway through the final frame proves to be the game-winner.

Greg Millen took the loss for Brooklyn, stopping 32 shots. Greg Hanlon picked up the win, re-routing 26 shots.

Mackinac Island Moose @ Ohio Legends Mackinac Island 5, Ohio 5

The Moose get a four-point night (2-2-4) out of Bill Barber and get a pair of assists from Jari Kurri in the victory. Roland Melanson turned aside 37 shots in taking the win.

Ohio’s highlight was Bernie Federko winning 23 faceoffs. Enough said.

Weekly Summary: A split for the week for the Legends as they are now three points clear of the Adams Division basement. With the holidays rapidly approaching, there should be some player movement to start the new calendar year.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
Weekly Preview: Charlotte and North Carolina go on the road to St. Clair Shores.
Charlotte Dynamo @ Saint Clair Shores Saints Baker scores in the first period to put the Dynamo on the board. Doug Wilson, defenseman for SCS scores his 18th goal. It’s 1-1.

North Carolina 5 SCS 2

1st – Payne
2nd – Jarvis
3rd – Goutlet

Weekly Summary: SCS continues its backslide. They lose to Charlotte and North Carolina.
Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: The Spirit is either a few trades away from a serious contender, or a few trades away from a serious rebuild.

Let’s see how it plays out…

North Carolina 89’ers @  North Carolina helps make the decision to rebuild an easier one as they dominate the once-proud defending champs, 7-4.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Spirit Charlestown games are always circled on the calendar, because of the sibling rivalry… but the older one gets the better of the good looking one this time as the Chiefs skate to a 5-4 win on the heels of 2 unanswered 3rd-period goals.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Pittsburgh Spirit Brooklyn is 3-1 going into the 3rd period. Patey (6) makes it 3-2 early in the 3rd and with 42 seconds left in the game, Pettersson (14) ties it at 3!!

But… Brooklyn didn’t get the memo that this was supposed to be a tie, so they score 25 seconds later when Gustafsson (15) puts one behind St. Croix to seal a shocking victory against a stunned Pittsburgh team.

Weekly Summary: 3 home games, zero points…

Come and get it! Lafleur 8.3, Pettersson 7.3, Chouinard 7.1, Sittler 6.8, Resch 7.3 (goalie) or anything else you want!

Silk City Wales
Weekly Preview: What better way to usher in the winter holiday break than by welcoming in familial rival Brooklyn and high-scoring Mackinac Island.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Silk City Whales This game was as promised, a rough-and-tumble affair played close to the vest. Brooklyn gets the first goal 1:54 into the game but Silk City gets even in the second to send the game into the third period tied at 1. Rick Kehoe’s 18th gives the Whales the lead and Silk City adds two more (one an empty-netter) to put away the Harbor Rats 4-1.

Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: Just one home game this week. The Dynamo come out to the Island for the first time this year. The Moose won their only previous contest in Charlotte.
Charlotte Dynamo @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 6, Dynamo 2 – The 3rd line gets things going for the Moose early when Mike Zuke is the recipient of a nice pass from Watson in front of the net and he converts to make it 1-0 just over 4 minutes in. The Dynamo don’t wait long to answer as only 4 minutes later Jonathan knots the game at 1 on a mid range shot. The home team doesn’t waste time in answering as MacLean puts the Moose up under 2 minutes later. The final 10 minutes of the 1st is all goalies, and the home team kills 2 penalties to hold the lead into intermission.

The Dynamo come out in the 2nd a bit flat, and their first 3 penalties (Wesley, Leveille and Shmyr) all lead to goals (Barber, Lysiak and Dunlop). The visitors are unable to answer in the period, and the teams go to 2nd intermission 5-1 Moose. A good fight between Shmyr and Barber near the end earns each 5 minutes.

3rd period the visitors declare themselves still in the game with a goal by Smith just past the 2 minute mark, which gets the attention of the Moose. Not wanting to see the another 3rd period goal fest, they regain their focus and net the answering goal just 3 minutes later with Napier scoring from close in. The goalies control the rest of the game, and it ends 6-2. Free fudge for all ticket holders, unless they have been known to cheer for Vermont at some time in their life.

1st star – Lysiak 1G 3pts
2nd – Dunlop 1G 2pts
3rd – MacLean 1G 2pts

Weekly Summary: Defense continues to improve, allowing only 2 goals. One win at home, and now 3 games on the road. This is a huge road trip at this point in the season.
Charlotte Dynamo
Weekly Preview: Charlotte, desperately trying to become playoff worthy after some recently encouraging outings (there’s still plenty of time), hosts its Tar Heel rivals from North Carolina as well as division foe Cap Jack during this latest week of play.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Charlotte Dynamo The Dynamo overcome early goals from 89ers Jim Fox and Lee Fogolin to turn back their nearby foes (from Raleigh?), 5-2. Fox scored 51 seconds in and Fogolin gave the 89ers the 2-0 lead on a short handed goal. Charlotte answered with three goals against Grant Fuhr in the last five minutes of the first period to capture the 3-2 lead and never again trailed. Charlotte’s Steve Bozek drilled home what proved to be the game winner on an assist from Glenn Anderson with 5 seconds left in the opening period.

Star 2 – Dale Hawerchuk 1 G, 2 pts

CapJack Rangers @ Charlotte Dynamo Against their Patrick Division foes, the Dynamo crash back down to earth, losing 6-3. After Bozek’s first of two goals ended a scoreless tie after just 15 seconds of play and put the home team ahead, the Rangers responded with five of the next six goals in the first two periods. Real Cloutier was the Real Deal and led CapJack with two goals, including the GWG that put the team ahead 4-2 in the second followed by an empty netter with 1:25 to play that closed the scoring.

Three Stars (all from CapJack)
Star 1 – Real Cloutier, 2 Goal, 3 pts
Star 2 – Grant Mulvey 2 G
Star 3 – Bryan Trottier 4 assists

Notable: Risto Siltanen from Cap Jack, 3 assists, Michel Dion 34 saves

Weekly Summary: The Dynamo get two out of a potential four points but this challenged group will settle for simply remaining competitive after a dreadful start to the season.
Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: Two games at home vs CapJack and Philadelphia.
CapJack Rangers @ Charlestown Chiefs Chiefs come out FLYING, scoring goals just 29 and 51 seconds into the game.

Unfortunately, they went ice cold and turtled up the rest of the game. CapJack scores a pair to tie it up and that’s how we end it. Ushers had to wake up many fans and hurry them out of the gates as this one was a snoozefest.

Philadelphia Firebirds @ Charlestown Chiefs A huge test for the Chiefs, as big bad Filthadelphia comes to town.

And that’s the extent of our trash talking, as we get beat down 5-3 on home ice. Philly gets 3 goals in the 1st to take charge, and only a Denis Potvin (8) goal with 3 seconds left in the game makes the score look somewhat respectable. It’s bad when the visiting team racks up all 3 stars of the game.
