| Chicago Underground @ CapJack Rangers | Underground in town and they discover this is NOT the Capone Center. Gare scores 2 minutes into the game for the Rangers – but Stastny counters 2 minutes later and the 1st period ends in a draw, 1-1. But in the 2nd, the Rangers put on a charge with a goal from Tambelline (3 and 1/2 minutes in), a PP goal from Robinson (a minute later) and then with 2 minutes to goal – Larry Robinson tallies again and it’s 4-1 end of 2. However, the Underground didn’t go that fast as Stastny (from Bossy and Gillies) scores 20 seconds into the 3rd. That was his 2nd goal – and it was the same combo that netted their 1st goal. But – then the Rangers clamped down – and in spite of TWENTY FOUR SOG in the 3rd period – they held. 45 total SOG for the Underground – Dion was checking his equipment after the game for damage… and in spite of his 43 saves (and heroic 3rd period) the media didn’t include him in the stars for the game (I did!!). STARS: 1. CAP – Robinson 2 goals 2. Gare 1 goal, 2 assists (and there had been trade rumors surrounding him this week) 3. Stastny 2 goals |
| Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers | This is a HUGE game for both teams. The Rats have been the hot team in the Patrick division of late, climbing from 3rd to 1st and taking no prisoners. So it wasn’t a surprise with Gustafsson got them on the board first 7 minutes into the game. However, Shutt responded a minute and a half later to tie – and set the stage for a see-saw battle. Crowder gets sent to the box for tripping and Smith responds for Brooklyn with a PP goal just past midway in the 1st to make it 2-1. Just over a minute and a half later – the Rangers Deblois scores to retie the game and the 1st ends 2-2. Just past 7 minutes into the 2nd, Kotsopoulos scores for CapJack and the Rangers have their 1st lead of the game. And it lasts just over a minute (pattern here) when Smith scores his 2nd of the game to tie it back up. Trottier however, takes advantage of an Osborne penalty to score a PP goal to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead. Just before he scored, Playfair and Mulvey went to the box for 5 minutes each for fighting. The game was chippy with 14 penalties, but 10 of them were coincidental penalties – so the PPs were limited. After the Rangers got the 4-3 lead it took the Rats 3 minutes to score to tie it up – but Gartner did it with the 1st of his 2 scores. Period 2 ends in a 4-4 tie. 3rd PERIOD – things took longer in this period before any scoring happened – it is definitely looking like playoff hockey this period, but Gartner gets his 2nd goal with 7 1/2 minutes to go to get the Rats back on top 5-4. BUT – Danny Gare storms back to tie the game 35 seconds later – man the way these two teams are fighting back all the time has the crowd going nuts. AND – Stastny (the other one not in Chicago) comes back and scores 35 seconds after Gare’s goal to retake the lead 6-5 for the Rats. And then it happened – the Rangers could NOT retaliate any more, even with an extra attacker for the final 90 seconds. And the Rats take the big game, 6-5! UGH! STARS: 1. BRO – Smith 2 goals, 3 assists (that’s 5 points)!! 2. BRO – Gartner 2 goals 3. CAP – DeBlois 1 goal, 2 assists |
| Charlotte Dynamo @ CapJack Rangers | Rangers finish the week hosting another division mate – Charlotte – and hope to pull off a win. They score first with Trottier getting the Rangers up 1-0 7 minutes in. And with 1 second to go in the period AND on a PP, Bozek puts one past Bouchard to tie the game (Rangers had been called for too many men on the ice!). But that was the last time things looked good for the Dynamo. Rangers get 2 in the 2nd – Cloutier and Gare. And then they add on 3 more in the 3rd – Kotsopoulos, Trottier and Tambellini – and they skate to their locker room with a big 6-1 win. Rangers had lots of penalties (20 minutes) and the Dynamo were only able to capitalize on that 1 PP opportunity (they were 1 for 6). STARS: (all CAP) 1. Trottier 2 goals, 1 assist 2. | New Castle Ducks @ North Carolina 89’ers | Lumley led off the scoring with a short-handed breakaway goal at 6:38 of the first. New Castle quickly pulled away, up 3-1 at the start of the 3rd. The two teams traded goals back and forth for a while, and the 89’ers were able to pull within 1 with 1:11 left to play but were unable to capitalize on it. FINAL SCORE: New Castle 6 North Carolina 5THREE STARS: 1. New Castle – Middleton 2G 2A 2. North Carolina – Lupul 2G 3. | Philadelphia Firebirds @ New Castle Ducks | Ducks fans have packed The Duck Pond for this big showdown game between the top two squads in the Norris Division. New Castle puts Billy Smith, who usually plays only on the road, in net to try to stop the #1 offense in the MWOTHL – and the Ducks plan to shadow both league-leading scorer Dennis Maruk and his teammate Marcel Dionne. A rough start is anticipated as well given the bad blood between the two teams and some of the tough guys on both rosters. The Ducks draw first blood when tough guy Terry O’Reilly goes offense and nets his 10th of the year, at 9:39 of the first, beating Rick Wamsley in the Philly net. at 10:25 Mark Hardy gets the first of his four penalties and the Ducks go on the power play with the league’s #1 PP unit. But the Firebirds kill all the momentum – and silence the crowd – when Mel Bridgman scores SHORTHANDED to tie the game. Marian Stastny scores for New Castle with 1:07 to go and the teams go to the locker room with New Castle ahead 2-1 after one period. In the second, Lindstrom gets his 16th at 3:11 to tie it and then Maruk adds to his scoring lead with his 34th of the season and Philly leads 3-2 after two. The Firebirds are outplaying the Ducks with a 25-13 shot advantage but Billy Smith is making things tough for the Birds. On to the third period, and the Ducks come out flying but again the momentum is killed when Marcel Dionne scored, his 26th of the year, assisted by Maruk and now it’s a 2 goal lead for Philly. At 6:02 Al Secord goes off for hooking and the Ducks have their big chance now to get back in the game. Then came the BACK BREAKER as Kenny Linseman gets the Birds SECOND SHORT HANDED GOAL OF THE GAME to make it 5-2 and put things out of reach for New Castle. Adding icing to the cake, Maruk scores two power-play goals a minute apart in the closing minutes to give him 36 goals on the season and give Philadelphia a resounding 7-2 win over their rivals.THREE STARS: 1- PHI Maruk (of course) 3 G 1 A 2- PHI Linseman 1 G (SHG) 1 A 3- PHI-Craig Hartsburg 3 AMark Hardy had 11 PIM, Paul Holmgren had 10 and John Van Boxmeer 15 – all for the Flyers. Terry O’Reilly of the Ducks received a MATCH penalty in the second period for intent to injure Hardy. After the game, O Reilly was SUSPENDED for 5 games. There were three fights in the game. First period: Kelly and Walter Second Period: Hardy and Bobby Clarke Third Period: John Van Boxmeer and Brad McCrimmon. In that one Van Boxmeer got a 10-minute misconduct to go with a fighting major and teammate Paul Holmgren also drew a misconduct.Ducks Defenseman Brad McCrimmon had SIX blocked shots, only the third time this season that a player has had 6 or more in a game. Linseman had FIVE HITS for PhillyFirebirds outshot Ducks 36-22. There were 88 combined PIM in the game.Maruk’s Hat Trick was his FOURTH of the season! |
| Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks | NEW CASTLE 5 SYRACUSE 4
After losing to the Firebirds, the Ducks bounced back with a win against division rival Syracuse. For New Castle, it was their 5th win in five tries this season against the Bulldogs. Ducks shot out to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Ryan Walter, Rick Middleton (short handed) and Tony Currie (power play). Syracuse stormed back in the second period against Michel Larocque in goal as Ivan Boldiver scored twice and then Bengt Lundholm tied it with his 15th of the season. With the crowd stunned, Ducks rookie sensation, Barry Pederson, restored order when he scored his 30th of the year, assisted by McCrimmon and Pichette to make it 4-3 Ducks after two. THREE STARS: 1- SYR Lundholm 2G 2 A Stan Smyl of SYR had 3 assists. Pederson won 15 faceoffs (out of 20). Syracuse outshot the Ducks 33-25 but Larocque stopped 29 shots to go to 14-2-2 on the season. Don Edwards (5-23-1) was the losing goalie. |
| Chicago Underground @ New Castle Ducks | NEW 3 CHI 3
The Ducks rally in the third period to gain a tie against their division rivals. New Castle and Chicago have played four games this season, with the Ducks winning one and the other THREE ending in ties! The first period ended 1-1 and then in the second, Valentine scored his 20th, on the power play, as the Underground took a 2-1 lead after two. In the third, at 1:21, high scoring Mike Bossy netted his 23rd and Chicago had a 3-1 lead. With Pete Peeters stoning one Ducks drive after another, it looked like the lead would hold up. But suddenly the Ducks came to life and it was Pederson who once again was the star. The rookie center took a pass from Marian Stastny and beat Peeters at 14:30 for his 31st goal of the year, making it 3-2. With the sellout crowd roaring, the Ducks tied it FIFTEEN SECONDS later when backup RW Blair MacDonald (playing in place of the suspended O’Reilly) scored only his second of the year (from Walter and Clarke) to tie the game. The teams battled for the remaining 5:15 but no one could score and the game ended 3-3. THREE STARS: Peeters made 33 saves as New Castle out shot Chicago 36-27. Larocque had 24 saves for the Ducks. |

John Orgodnick’s goal with 5:15 remaining was the final goal in a 2-2 tie between North Carolina and Ohio. Johnny O’s eleventh goal of the season was the only score of the second period as well. Almost all of the offensive fireworks came in the first period, as John Anderson’s 15th goal started things for the Legends. Michel Goulet’s 15th knotted things up at one a bit later, while Bernie Federko’s 24th before period end gave Ohio the edge at the first break. The third period featured 20 shots on goal between the teams, but there was no scoring. Grant Fuhr had his season record go to 9-7-2 for the 89’ers, with 22 saves. Glen Hanlon stopped 31 while improving to 4-9-2. |

| Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Charlotte Dynamo | With two third period goals, the Saints steal a 6-5 win over backup netminder Tony Esposito and the Dynamo. The Saints’ Steve Christoff (there’s a name I haven’t heard in decades), ties the game with his 11th goal midway through the third. Then with 1:26 left, Norm Dupont chips in the game-winner for Saint Clair Shores. Stud defenseman Doug Wilson assists on both goals to help spark the Saints rally and finishes with three assists and 5 blocks total. St. Clair Shores came back from a 4-1 deficit against the hapless Esposito. Glenn Anderson had scored two of the goals to help provide Charlotte with the early lead; Charlotte also received two goals from Gil Perreault who was the first star. Perrault’s late second-period goal gave the Dynamo the early 6-5 lead. |
| Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlotte Dynamo | The Dynamo put together one of its most complete efforts of the season in dismantling its Patrick leading rivals, 9-3. Steve Bozek takes top star honors with a hat trick for Charlotte and he adds an assist and 2 hits for good measure. The Dynamo scored the first four goals of the game in the game’s first 23 minutes. Brooklyn answers with two immediate second-period goals from Bobby Smith and defenseman Behn Wilson in a 13-second span to close the gap to 4-2, but then Charlotte erupts with the next four goals to chase goalie Greg Millen (replaced by Ron Low) and put the game away.
Fourth liner Larry Hopkins contributes with two goals in the win for Charlotte and goalie Vincent Tremblay is sensational with 41 saves. |

| Ohio Legends @ Mackinac Island Moose | Legends 6, Moose 4 – Ohio kicks some ass the first 30 minutes, holding the Moose to only 9 shots on goal, while dominating play, the puck in the offensive zone most of the time, and scoring 3 goals, 2 from Kerr and one from Molin. Middle of the 2nd, Lysiak answers and gives the home team a little hope, with the game going to 2nd intermission 3-1 Legends.
3rd period sees a little more hope sneak in, as Park gets a goal just seconds into the period. 3-2 Legends. A couple of minutes later, poof, despair sneaks back in on a powerplay goal from Kerr (HAT TRICK). Napier comes to the rescue with goals at 11 minutes left, and the equalizer at 6 minutes left, and on the heels of the 4-1 scoring surge, the Arena is rocking. The party poopers that they are, Ohio Legends, end the fun with 2 quick goals, Maloney and Allison, and its all sad time again. Pulling the goalie is exciting, but unproductive, and a bunch of sad Moose fans go home 6-4 losers. 1st star – Kerr 3G |
| North Carolina 89’ers @ Mackinac Island Moose | 89’ers 7, Moose 2 – Big division game between the 1st and 2nd place team is a yawner, as North Carolina dominates the whole game. Goulet gets the first 2 in 5 minutes. MacLean answers with 8 minutes to go in the 1st, but then the Moose offense gets clamped down, while the visitors rattle off 3 unanswered from Stoughton, Fox and Williams. making it 5-1 with 19 minutes left in the game. Napier gets one more for the Moose, while Hopkins and Williams get 2 more for the 89’ers, to make the final damage 7 goals.
An interesting point in the 3rd period. As it was a blowout, I put the lines back to auto and allowed the CPU to move players. VERY SHOCKING. The computer manager ran my 2nd line ragged, down to fatigue numbers of 20-30-40, and simultaneously ran one defenseman down to 0 (zero). I would insert some other lines with fatigues in the 80’s and 90’s, but then the CPU would put the gasses line back in at the next opportunity. Going to watch this more in future games. I sent a screenshot into DK Sports asking for how this could happen. 1st star – Goulet 2G 3pts |
