Weekly Summary: | Toughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh win for Philly. |
CapJack Rangers | |
Weekly Preview: | Rangers add some Offense (Lafluer) and Defense (Russell) in an attempt to garner a Patrick Division playoff spot – nobody wants one. We face a weaker team and two stronger teams this week… |
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ CapJack Rangers | Rangers pounce to a whopping 6-5 lead after 2 periods – including a goal and assist from Lafluer and a goal from Russell. But then they give up 2 unanswered goals in the 3rd and drop the contest 7-6. UGH!!! Duguay and Francis each score multiple times for the Saints – Francis (hat trick) gets the tying goal 28 seconds into the 3rd Sutter nabs the game-winner with 12 minutes left in the game. Both starting goalies were lifted and Kearns played the final 24 minutes and shut out the Rangers. Bouchard came in for the 3rd and gave up the tying and winning goals. STARS 1. SCS – Francis 3 goals 2. SCS – Duguay 2 goals 3. CAP – Shutt 2 goals, 1 assist |
New Castle Ducks @ CapJack Rangers | Ducks trying to catch Philly need this one as badly as the Rangers. CapJack manages grab a 2-1 lead in the 1st on goals by Trottier and Lafluer and it would have been 2-0 except Nedomansky scores with 1 SECOND left in the period. He took a feed from Silk and just unloaded – and it beat Dion. 2nd Period – Both teams score 1 as the Rangers get their 2nd PP goal when Cloutier scores (from Lafluer) and then Lambert scores – again a last-minute goal – and it’s 3-2 Rangers after 2. 3rd Period – Trottier gets his 2nd of the game (from Lafluer) to make it 4-2 with 6 minutes left. Stays that way until the final minute – and then, well, let’s say it was near epic. 50 seconds remaining Shutt from Siltanen – Goal and a 5-2 Ranger lead. Billy Smith then exits the net for New Castle. After Trottier wins the faceoff, the puck gets to the neutral zone – Stastny gets it, to Middleton – shots, Pederson deflects SCORE, 5-3. 40 seconds left. Faceoff – Pederson wins it (still an extra skater on the ice). Pederson takes it up ice, to Middleton, to Pichette, to Pederson, to Middleton – over the line, to Pederson, wrist shot – Dion the save, rebound out front knocked away by Robinson (whew), but Pichette gets the puck, to Pederson, he shoots again – GOAL. 22 seconds left and it’s 5-4 CapJack. 2 goals in 28 seconds (and 3 goals total in 28 seconds!!). Face-off (more??) – Bourne wins the faceoff, but the Rangers check him hard and the Ducks can’t get any more shots off and somehow the Rangers hold on for the 5-4 win. STARS: 1. CAP – Trottier 2 goals 2. CAP – Lafluer 1 goal, 2 assists 3. CAP – Cloutier 1 goal, 2 assists NOT SURE I’ve seen this before, but Pederson with 2 goals did not get a star OR notable. We sure noted him! |
Charlestown Chiefs @ CapJack Rangers | Rangers use a PP, SH and Even strength goals in the 1st to grab a 3-2 lead. Mulvey gets 2 of them. However, McKegney and McDonald score for the Chiefs to keep it tight. 2nd Period – Charlestown scores twice in the the 1st 5 minutes. Gardner and Gradin (Gradin also assisted on Gardner’s goal). Chiefs now up 4-3! But Mulvey gets a PP goal just over a minute later to tie the game (and give him a hat trick. And then 21 seconds after that – Cloutier scores to get the Rangers back on top 5-4. Siltanen completes the 2nd-period score with a goal with just over 2 minutes left (and Mulvey gets a helper on that one. 6-4 Rangers after 2. 3rd Period. Tremblay scores very early on to get the Chiefs back to within 1. But then the scoring dries up until the end when the Chiefs go for the extra attacker – and with 2 seconds left – it PAYS OFF – but for the Rangers as Kotsopoulus scores the Empty Netter giving CapJack a 7-5 win. TOUGH FACTS: Mulvey might have scored more points but he was called for a 2 minute roughing in the 1st, a 2 minute slashing in the 1st and then with 59 seconds left in the 2nd he gets a 5-minute penalty for fighting and a GAME MC -all told, he’s credited with 19 PIM but missed the 3rd. And Potvin got the same fighting and Game MC along with Mulvey. Plus Faubert/McCarthy/Paiement (CHA) and Russell/Murphy/Kotsopoulos all got 5-minute fighting penalties in the BIG BRAWL (though Philadelphia was in town). It all started after Kotsopoulos drilled McKegney and Paiement took exception and he punched Kotsopoulos – it was a draw. Then it started to look like a scene from Slapshot (figures since it was the Chiefs – and Potvin and Mulvey couldn’t stay away). By the end of the game, the Chiefs had racked up 44 PIM and CapJack received 38. For all the Rangers minutes, the Chiefs only got 2 PPs and missed on both, the Rangers were 2 for 5. STARS (all CAP) 1. Mulvey 3 goals 1 assist (in 2 periods) 2. Siltanen 1 goal, 1 assist (continues to flourish) 3. Shutt 3 assists |
Weekly Summary: | Rangers win the 2 against the better teams and drop the 1 to the easier team – go figure! Lafluer makes a 5 point contribution (2 goals, 3 assists) in his 1st 3 games with CapJack and Russell gets a goal and an assist. However, the Rangers STILL can’t stop pucks very well…… |
Silk City Whales | |

Doug Smail scored his second of the game to bring the Whales to within a goal and Larry Murphy’s goal with the goalie pulled tied the game with 1:20 left in the third period. Dennis Maruk and John Tonelli scored two apiece for the Firebirds.

North Carolina 89’ers @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | Goulet, Babych and Broten help the 89ers to a 3-0 lead, and after Gustafsson gets the Rats on the board, Lumley scores with :13 seconds left before the second intermission to regain the 3 goal lead for Carolina. Grant Fuhr makes 31 saves as the visitors post a 5-2 win. |
Mackinac Island Moose @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | The Moose hold a 2-1 edge with the 2nd period winding down when Behn Wilson scores a short-handed goal to tie it. Just 2 minutes into the 3rd, Mark Johnson puts Brooklyn in front. But Brian Propp nets the tying goal with 8 and half minutes remaining and nobody would score again as this one ends in a 3-3 tie. |

THREE STARS: 1- PIT – Petterson 2 G Larocque had 29 saves for the Ducks. Chico Resch 28 for the Spirit |

After the teams battled without further scoring, Glenn Anderson finally scored at 16:02 of the second to tie the game. In the third period, Mike Rogers scored unassisted at 7:35 to break the tie. THREE STARS |
Vermont Foresters @ New Castle Ducks | NEW 6 VER 5 The last place Foresters gave the Ducks a run for their money in a wild shootout. after the teams exchanged first period goals, the Ducks added two more in the period when Barry Pederson netted his 36th and Blair MacDonald his 3rd to make it 3-1 Ducks after one. At 3:19 of the second, Marian Stastny scored to make it 4-1 and things looked pretty good for the Ducks. Then Vermont stormed back led by high scoring winger Morris Lukowich. Luckowich scored at 6:20 and again at 12:45 to make it 4-3, with his 30th goal of the year. Some 3 1/2 minutes later the Foresters stunned the crowd at the Duck Pond when Mike Foligno put the puck past Larocque to tie the game! The teams started the third period tied at 4-4. New Castle restored order early when defenseman Dave Pichette scored his second of the year at 1;22. and then less than a minute later, Pederson scored his second of the game and 37th of the season to make it 6-4. It stayed that way until less than 5 minutes to go when Lukowich did it again – scoring the hat trick with his 31st of the season to make it 6-5. Vermont pressed frantically in the final minutes, as they outshot New Castle 13-5 in the third, but they could not get the tying goal. Larocque allowed 5 goals on just 25 shots in one of his weaker performances of the year. Nevertheless, the #2 Ducks goalie improved his record to an impressive 16-3-3. Richard Broduer gave up 6 goals on 27 shots as he dropped to 13-16-3 on the year.THREE STARS: 1- VER Lukowich 3G 1 A 4 Pts HAT TRICK 2- NEW Pederson 2G 1 A 3 Pts 3- NEW M. Mackinac Island Moose | |
Weekly Preview: | Coming off 2 mediocre weeks, going 3-4-1, the Moose hope to rebound. First, the tree-hugging Foresters from the northeast come to town, and then the evil flaming fowl from the City of Brotherly Love. |
Vermont Foresters @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 1, Foresters 0 – Two teams, each with scoring averages well above 3 goals per game combine to show that numbers can lie. Vermont plays defense like possessed demons. About half of each zone entry attempt by the Moose gets knocked on its ass, and the visitors turn the puck around. Unfortunately, most of the zone entries by the Foresters see similar results and when Vermont does get a shot off, most go nowhere near the net, and the Moose bring it in for another push. When the Moose finally get their shots off, most are on target, get stopped, and result in rebound follow-ups, but similarly, nothing in the net. This goes on for 55 minutes. The Vermont team solid on the penalty kill, with the same ferocity, some PK attempts end with zero shots on goal for the Moose. 1st period the SOG battle goes to the Moose 13-5, in the second 13-3, still with no goals scored, and in the 3rd the trend is the same until Barber pokes one in with just over 3 minutes to go. The Moose continue to control the puck the rest of the game, with the Foresters only getting about 30 seconds with a pulled goalie near the end resulting in one shot on goal.
Fights – Wells v. Barber (2 min), Hunter v. Boutette (5 min., Boutette +10), Foligno v. Bonar 1st star – Melanson 14 saves, shutout win |
Philadelphia Firebirds @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 5, Firebirds 0 – Everybody is amped up for the battle of west conference division leaders. 1st period sees Philly get an early 4-minute power play after O’Connell gets caught with a bad cross-check. The Birds pelt Meloche with 5 SOG but he is able to stop them all. The next 6 minutes is mostly 4 on 4 after scuffles between Secord/Boutette and Linseman/Bonar. Neither team was able to take advantage of the spacious ice. Teams continue awesome defensive play in the period, and it ends 0-0 after a combined 23 shots on goal
2nd period, the switch in strategy by the Moose seems to play out big, as they get 3 power-play chances in the middle of the period, and convert on 2 of them. Napier and Kurri on the business end of some nice passes to get the scores. 2 more scuffles, Linseman/Boutette early and Ramsey/O’Connell late. Period ends 2-0 Moose. 3rd period opens with a Linseman penalty which the Moose have trouble even getting a shot off. A little later its Maruk and Dunlop in a scuffle earning 2 minutes off. Shortly after teams are back to full strength, the Moose find Dunlop near the crease and he cashes in to make it 3-0. Teams thwart each other the next 10 minutes, and then Linseman decides to vent his frustration on Boutette for the 2nd and final time of the game, fighting to a draw, the players go to the locker room early with 2 minutes to go. About the minute later the Moose get one more from MacLean from the point, and then 30 seconds later, Napier deflects one in to piss off the Firebirds and makes it 5-0. 1st star – Meloche 26 save shutout |
Weekly Summary: | With the goalies pitching a pair of shutouts, the Moose a delighted to have one more way to win a game, that they did not have earlier this year, often needing 5 or more goals to get the W. Thank you Gilles Meloche and Roland Melanson for showing up with your A-game. |

Tied 4-4 in the third, returning right-winger Charlie Simmer fired home the game-winning goal with 5:39 left on the clock, and the Dynamo registered two more empty-net goals in the final minute of play. The Whales valiantly fought back from a 4-1 deficit early in the third on a pair of goals from Mark Messier, followed by a tying goal by center Ron Flockhart (40+ points for the year).
