Mackinac Island Moose | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two contenders from the Patrick Division come to the Island to get a taste of Hockey in the Mitten State. It’s better on the Island after the trip on Shepler’s Ferry. |
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE | And the first action we have is …………. a fight. Arniel and Ladouceur with roughing minors give us some open-ice action. And just seconds later, Crowder from close in to put the STRangers up 1-0. A Giles minor 30 seconds later gives us some 4-on-3 action. Shortly after the coincidental minors expire, the Moose move the puck up ice and a desperation blast by Goring (SHORTY!) ties the game at 1. Still stepping on their own toes, the Moose with another blunder, Maruk, gives the Rangers a PP opportunity, but the Moose kill it. Play settles down and some full-strength action for a while. Arniel breaks the tie with 7 minutes to go, now 2-1 Rangers. The period melts away until just before the break, and another skirmish puts Robertson and Engblom in the box as the clock hits 0:00. 2-1 visitors.
The trash-talking starts hot and heavy, leading to a real battle between Ladouceur (again) and Crowder, getting each 5 minutes this time. One minute later, Arniel (again) skirmishes with MacLean. Each team now with 2 men in the box. Quinn takes advantage of the open ice to tie the game at 2, with 17 minutes to go. A Wickenheiser minor is quickly killed by the Rangers. Just past halftime, a minor by Marois costs the Moose in the form of a goal by Trottier, and the Rangers are up 3-2. Two minutes later, some fresh meat gets in the grinder, and Blum 5/10 trading punches with Maruk 5/GAME, and the Moose shower room is in use early. A Trottier minor just seconds later is efficiently killed by the Rangers, and off we go. Just before the break, Quinn with an opening ties the game at 3, and off for some beer and brats. 3rd period opens with a trip by Arniel, no stranger to the sin bin today. This time it is costly to the Rangers as MacLean puts the Moose up for the first time in the game. 4-3. With even strength, he does it again just 68 seconds later, and suddenly the Moose is up 5-3, with 16 minutes to go. The 2-goal advantage is cut in half just 3 minutes later when Wickenheiser finds a crease to slip one in, now 5-4 Moose. A MacLean minor 2 minutes later is killed by the Moose and we head to the final 10 minutes. Propp provides some peace of mind for the crowd when he gets open and scores to double the lead to 2 with 8 minutes to go. Russell with a minor, but was killed off by the visitors, but now only 6 minutes to go. Moose are able to keep the lamp dark the rest of the way and are happy to finish with a 6-4 win. 1st star – Quinn 2G Maruk 17 PIM, Blum 15 PIM |
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE | In a tense battle, the 1st and 2nd period are scoreless. The Dynamo kills off 2 minors, the Moose kill 3. Skorodenski 17 saves, Beaupre 13 saves. Frycer was injured for the Moose, who will play the 3rd down 1 man.
Tense play continues just before the 10-minute mark when finally some electricity gets to a lamp, but not the home crowd when Boschman sneaks one in, and the Dynamo are up 1-0. Shortly after, Quenneville and Kurri in a skirmish fire up the crowd and both teams. As the penalty clock times out, Vaive with a hooking penalty starts a series of 3 minors in a row by the Dynamo, and they pay dearly for each one, as MacLean, Quinn, and Kurri cash in, the last one with just over 2 minutes to go, and Moose suddenly up 3-1. The Dynamo clearly wants to pull the goalie and mount a comeback, but the Moose are able to keep the puck in the offensive zone, go into the 4 corner offense and kill the clock, with Skorodenski pinned in the goal. 1st star – Quinn 1G 2pts |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Moose are able to mount 2 comeback wins before heading out for 2 road games. Quinn comes on strong on the 3rd line with 3 goals. Need to work on anger management a bit as the fights are pushing the active skaters to their limit. |
CapJack Rangers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Rangers have 1 home game this week but it’s a doozy – St. Clair Shores – the league’s top team after 3 weeks (we play the other top team on the road). |
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS | Talk about domination (ok, we weren’t but now we are). The Saints out-shot the Rangers 47-15 (SOGs) and 75-28 shots total. Face-offs go to the Saints 69/31 % and they get twice as many power plays. Now let’s look at the results of this effort. P1 – NO SCORING! but 7 penalties (6 of those are coincidental) Saints get the only PP but the Rangers hold them off. But the Rangers manage only ONE (1) SOG in the period to 14 for the Saints! Resch is looking a bit beat up. P1 – CapJack draws 1st blood with a Beck goal 48 seconds in! – the 2nd shot of the game for the Rangers. Then Francis ties the game with a Saints goal on a one-timer as we close in on the game’s midpoint. But the Rangers fight back (making almost every shot count) and Boutilier and Haworth both put shots past Barrasso near the end of the period for a 3-1 lead. But poor Rangers defense allows Bozek to score with just over a minute left and the Saints draw within 1 at 3-2. Inside the final minutes and Pettersson passes one over to Boutilier and he winds up and fires a slap shot right past Barrasso and the Rangers score their 4th of the period for a 4-2 lead after 2. Rangers make it count as again the SOG total is meager – only 5, but 4 of them go IN! Saint Clair Shores pop 19 at Resch – what a workout – and get 2 in. What does the 3rd period have in store?P3 – well, the Rangers manage to outshoot their previous 2 rounds getting 8 to go on the net, but it’s the Saints that are having the better of it. Bridgman scores 11 minutes in to cut the lead to 4-3. Then with 1 1/2 to go McCarthy and Federko work a breakout and they work it to perfection as Federko shoots it past Resch to tie the game at 4-4! Well hang on – that apparently wakes up the home team and with 48 seconds to go, Trottier wins a face-off in the Saints end, passes to Crowder after Kromm gets it back to him, Crowder takes the shot – GOAL, Rangers back up 5-4. Can they kill the last seconds of the game? St. Clair Shores is giving it everything, Federko on as the extra attacker – puck gets into the Rangers end – Federko to Gustafsson, to Francis, to Gustafsson to Federko – slides it to Francis, SHOT – nope, but Federko gets it back, he shoots, Barr blocks it but McCarthy controls it in the neutral zone 20 seconds left, new lines (except for Federko). Federko gets it, to Tocchet – one times – GOAL! 16 seconds left and the game is tied! Saints fire 14 on Resch (47 total) and net 3 in the 3rd with that final coming seconds before the game ends and after 3 it’s a 5-5 tie!!OT – so on to OT!! A minute and a half in – no shots yet – until Torrie Robertson gains control behind the Saints net, he skates around hard, and wraps it around – and GOAL, he gets it past Barrasso and the Rangers win it in OT!! 6-5 final. The CRAZY game faces 15 shots and only stops 9 of them. Resch faces 47 shots and stops 42 of them!STARS – (all CAP) 1. Boutilier 2 goals 2. Hawarth 1 goal 1 assist 3. Trottier 3 assists Notable – 42 saves for Resch and for Saint Clair Shores – Nilan amasses 17 penalty minutes. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 1 game, 1 wild win vs. St. Clair Shores!! |

GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS | The Saints get two goals early and the Spirit responds with one in the 1st. The Saints lead 2-1 after one.
The Saints get two more in the second to Pittsburgh’s one. The Spirt with a nice comeback as they scored two unanswered goals in the 3rd and score a game-winning OT goal. The Saints outshot the Spirit, 38-31. Pittsburgh 5 SCS 4 (OT) 1-Larmer Rodgers with the winning goal. |
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS | This game goes to OT, just like the previous game.
It’s 1-1 after 1 as Fergus and Stevens score. McDonald scores in the 2nd for the Dynamo. In the 3rd, the Dynamo scored, but the Saints responded with 2 goals to take the game in OT. Bozek scores an OT game-winner for the Saints. SCS 4 Charlotte 3 (OT) 1-Adams |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Saints go to OT twice and lose to Pittsburgh, but bounce back to defeat Charlotte. |
New Castle Ducks | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The revamped Ducks are off to a surprisingly decent start this season at 5-6-1. This week they play 2 home games, against 6-5-1 Texas and the high-scoring Ohio Legends who are 6-3-2 coming into the game. |
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS | NCD 5 TEX 4
The Ducks win a back-and-forth contest when Denis Potvin scored the tie-breaking goal with 49 seconds left in regulation. The first period ended 1-1. In the second period, Pat LaFontaine’s first goal of the year put Texas ahead 2-1. The Ducks tied it on a goal by the veteran Tom Lysiak, and took the lead on a score by Terry Ruskowski. THREE STARS: Mark Napier had 3 assists for the Ducks as their #1 line of Napier-Johnson-Middleton continues to dominate. Johnson won 15 of 25 faceoffs. |
GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS | NCD 5 OHI 2
The Duck’s #1 line netted two goals in the first period as Napier (2) and Johnson (7) beat ex-Ducks goalie Dan Bouchard. Ohio comes back to tie it in the second on goals by Rich Preston (3) and a power play goal by Tony Tanti (9). THREE STARS: Ohio outshot New Castle 31-22, including 11-8 in the third period. Billy Smith made 29 saves for the Ducks. Johnson won 11 of 18 faceoffs. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | New Castle continues their strong start, winning both games at home. The Ducks are now 7-6-1 in the early going. Rick Middleton is 9th in the league in scoring (7-9-16) and Mark Johnson is 18th (8-6-14). Their linemate, Mark Napier is tied for 10th in the league in assists (2-10-12). Denis Potvin is fourth in scoring among defensemen (2-9-11) |
Michigan Stags | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Just one home contest this segment as the Ice Capades take over Cobo Area. Looking to snap a 2-game home ice losing skid the Stags take on the CapJack Rangers |
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS | Alan Bester makes his debut in the Stags’ nets as Michigan dominates in SOG, scoring chances, faceoffs, and shot attempts. But Bester is less than stellar, and Michigan drops a 3-2 decision to the Rangers. Michigan never led but pulled within 1 halfway through the third period on a Sylvain Turgeon blast. From that point the CapJack defense took over to shut down the Stags the rest of the way. Tough night for Michigan’s Eddie Beers who failed to score despite 5 scoring chances. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Michigan’s home ice losing streak reaches 3 games. |
Pittsburgh Spirit | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Spirit is enjoying what we hope will be the best season since our back-to-back Cup Championships!
Two home games. |
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT | A high-scoring affair!
It was 2-2 in the 2nd when the Spirit rattle off three straight goals to make it 5-2!! But Michigan battles back and it’s a 6-5 Spirit lead late in the 3rd. Turgeon (7) ties the game at 19:26 of the period!! We go to OT… 1:31 in and Rogers (5) sends the fans home happy!! Spirit wins 7-6 in OT!! |
GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT | Brother Brawl ™ sees the debut of Mario Lemieux in the Graveyard, where he was one pick away from playing at full-time!
There is no bad blood here… We just had to eat the cost of all of the #66 sweaters we had made prior to the draft lottery. But we’re not mad!! Nope… not… at… all… While the Spirit defenders focus all of their attention on keeping Mario off the scoreboard, the rest of the Chiefs take a 4-0 lead! The Spirit battle back… and it’s 5-4, Chiefs, in the 3rd… but we can’t get that 5th goal! So the Chiefs win this Brotherly Brawl ™ by a score of 5-4!! |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Two games, one win. We’ll see how we do on the road! |
Texas Brahmas | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two games at the Patty this week as Charlotte and Portland come to town. Texas is coming off of a bad week that saw a couple of top guys sitting out. Can they regain the early season momentum? |
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS | In a high-flying 1st period, LaVallee (CHA) and Nilsson (TEX) exchange 2 goals apiece for a 2-2 tie at the 10:13 mark. Texas gets the next 3, including the 3rd for Nilsson, for a 4-2 lead after 1 and a 5-2 lead after 2. Charlotte gets goals 20 seconds apart early in the 3rd and things are heating up. But, Bannerman steps it up, the rest of the 3rd is scoreless, and Texas wins it, 5-4.
3 Stars |
GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS | Portland comes in next with a subpar record but lots of firepower. Ruff gets his first of the year in the 1st and Sandstrom nets a PP goal in the 2nd for a 2-0 Texas lead after 2. Gretzky gets Portland on the board early in the 3rd before Tucker restores the 2-goal lead. Portland turns up the pressure and scores the next 2 on goals by Ellett and McKenna and we are all tied up. At 18:41, Texas superstar Dave Nilsson nets his 12th of the year and Herron shuts the door for a 4-3 Texas win.
3 Stars (all TEX) |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | All in all, a good homestand for the Brahmas. Giving up a lot of goals, but so far the offense has been up to the task. Can it continue? |
Chicago Underground | |

WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Underground has not been good from the start of the season. They are skating better & even have a little confidence going at the present time. Will it last? Sometimes you do the hard work and set the table, and somebody else eats the meal. Who’s eating this week in Chicago? The Legends of Ohio & the Spirit of Pittsburgh. |

---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Drakes get St. Clair Shores on home ice. |
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. DALLAS DRAKES | The powerful Saints come to town and :54 seconds in Murray Craven strikes for the Saints off a great feed from Ron Francis. Ken Linseman breaks in shorthanded at the 7:18 minute mark for the Drakes to tie the game up. John Anderson deflects a shot from Greg Paslawski to put the Drakes ahead at 10:13 but the Saints tie it up on the power play from a rebound by Bengt Gustafsson. Less than 2 minutes later Illka Sinisalo scores for the Drakes to make the score 3-2 and we are still in the first period with 15 seconds left in the first Scott Stevens puts a shot through a screen past Roberto Romano for a 3-3 tie at the first intermission. Both teams tighten the game up defensively in the second but Patrick Sundstrom puts the Drakes up at the 18:45 mark from a great setup from Rob Ramage and Lindsay Carson. In the 3rd period, the Drakes keep coming at the Saints and at the 9:02 mark Bob Manno slaps one from the top of the circle past Tom Barrasso to increase the lead to 5-3. The Drakes put the clamps on the Saints until St. Clair pulls the goalie and with the extra man Bernie Federko backhands one past Romano to cut the score to 5-4……which is how it ended. The Drakes win a tight one with the Saints 5-4. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Drakes get 4 points |
Charlotte Dynamo | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte, not immune to slow starts has fallen on hard times yet again early as this campaign gets started. A November 10 home game, scheduled this week against Michigan, has been sandwiched in between six contests where it failed to pick up a victory (not what was envisioned). Charlotte has suffered multiple losses in OT where it could not get out of the 80s-style five-minute OT to pick up at least a point. Probably still too early to panic but in a tough Patrick division, this team probably needs to get its arse in high gear. |
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO | The Dynamo gets the encouraging start it desperately needs when a pair of newcomers inserted into the lineup, Curt Fraser and Al Secord, get goals in the opening minutes. But the Stags respond late in the first period on an even-strength John Ogrodnick tally (assisted by Wayne Babych and Pierre Turgeon), to narrow the deficit to 2-1.
The Stags threatened in the opening moments of the second on the power play as Charlotte defenseman Doug Halward got cited 37 seconds in with a holding penalty. Michigan, looking to knot things up, instead yielded a shorthanded goal to special teams extraordinaire Dave Poulin who beat Michigan goalie Grant Fuhr 1:11 into the second, which padded Charlotte’s lead to 3-1. And before the period could reach 2:00, Rick Vaive added an even-strength goal for Charlotte seconds later (1:59) on assists from Halward, fresh out of the box, and another defenseman Timo Jutila. But the Stags were hardly through: Danny Gare opened up the third period scoring to reduce the deficit to 4-2 in the final period of regulation. And the squad fired 15 shots in the third but could not solve sensational and clutch goaltending from third-string netminder Doug Keans. Keans, playing often at least through the early part of this campaign, recorded 41 saves and shut down the Stags, as the Dynamo held on for the two-goal win. Three stars (all Charlotte): Notable: Bobby Carpenter won 16 faceoffs for the visitors (this writer, as he saw his first ever NHL game in person at Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium, witnessed Carpenter play his debut game that evening for the Capitals to open the 1981-82 season; that game obviously made an impression that continues to this day, as yours truly competes and struggles in this crazy league!) |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | It is still early in the season but Charlotte gets a must needed win already and the third-string goalie Keans is the hero. Following three losses on the road this week, the Dynamo’s record stands at 6-7-2. Suffice to say its work is cut out for them. |
Kamsack Cyclones | |
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The 6-6-1 Andes Mountaineers and the 6-5-2 Dallas Drakes are in Kamsack for this week’s home games. Andes is second in the Smythe and Dallas is leading the Norris. So two good tests for the Cyclones. Anton Stastny, Thomas Eriksson, and Pete Peters have been leading the cyclones. |
