CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game this week – 2nd place Pittsburgh in the Patrick Division. CapJack will try to maintain its division lead (what, how is this happening) – at least they try as hard as they can with 1 home game…
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The Rangers play like there’s no tomorrow in the opening 20 minutes firing 20 shots on a beleaguered Wamsley. But it’s Pittsburgh’s Rogers who hushes the crowd before they even sat down. 33 seconds in he scores on a 2-on-1 break!! Cmon!! And C’mon they did! Trottier and Dunn score 4 1/2 and 5 minutes later for a 2-1 Rangers lead. And then 19 minutes later early in the 2nd period Barr and Barr (yes he scores twice) score a minute and a half apart. So 5 minutes into the 2nd period the Rangers are up 4-1! Game set match!!

Well – maybe not. 4 1/2 left in the 2nd and Neufeld scores for Pittsburgh (against his former mates). But Robinson gets a SH goal for CapJack with 1 1/2 to go and it’s back to the 3-goal lead, 5-2 as the period ends. NOPE – I speaketh too soon! with 16 seconds left and that Pittsburgh PP still in force, Skriko scores making it 5-3 at the end of the 2nd!! OK – that’s really the score as they exit the ice after 2.

So, the 3rd period commences and the Spirit is on the attack, and Smail scores early to draw within 1. And the comeback is complete with a Derlago goal at the 11:24 mark. MORE UGHS! Then the defenses take over (or the offenses are too tired) UNTIL – WAIT FOR IT – Torrie Robertson scores for the Rangers with 28 beats left on the clock!!! The rafters are humming, the seats are shaking! BUT – and oh this is a BIG BUT(T) – Mike Rogers (who scored 33 seconds into the game to quiet the crowd) shuts down the crowd AGAIN as with the extra attacker on the ice, Rogers gets the puck from Larmer after Goulet (the extra attacker) feeds it to him – Rogers the wrister – GOAL!!!! And the game is tied with 6 SECONDS left!

So we go to OT – 2 scoring chances 2 shots on goal – 1 from each team. And just like Rogers did his silencing act at the beginning of regulation and the end, BARR does his thing for the Rangers and goes in with Arniel on an odd-man rush – he shoots it – not a strong shot – but either it was so well placed or Wamsley was asleep because it goes in for the hat trick and the WIN!!!! 7-6 CapJack

STARS
1. CAP – Barr 3 goals
2. PIT – Rogers 2 goals
3. CAP – Robinson 1 goal, 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Only 1 game, but got 2 points. It was far from pretty, well it was pretty offensive (you can read that in many ways), but again it was 2 out of a possible 2 points. We’ll take it with a smile.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game for the Ducks this week – their first-ever home contest against the expansion Hyannisport Presidents
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 8 HYA 4

A wild game goes to the Ducks. After a see-saw first period that saw the Ducks take a 4-3 lead, it was all Ducks after that, as New Castle scored 2 in the second and 2 in the third to take an 8-3 lead before a later goal by HYA made the final 8-4.
Greg Stefan started in goal for the Presidents but was pulled late in the second period after allowing his 6th goal on only 19 shots. Richard Sevigny replaced him.
The Ducks Mark Kumpel had a hat trick

GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. OHIO LEGENDS Mackinac Island 5, Ohio 5 (OT)

Jari Kurri scored a pair of goals and Brian Propp chipped in a goal and two assists for the Moose. Moe Lemay had a goal and an assist for the Legends. Mackinac took advantage of a power play goal to Knot the tie. Gilles Meloche stopped 32 for the Moose and Pat Riggin re-directed 35 in the tie.

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 4, SCS 1

Tim Higgins had a goal and an assist for Ohio. Chris Nilan had the lone goal for the Saints.

GAME #3: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. OHIO LEGENDS Portland 6, Ohio 0

Al Iafrate netted a pair of goals for Portland and the Sasquatch netted a pair of power-play goals. Reggie Lemelin stopped all 23 shots he faced.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio registered a pair of wins in the Adams Division this week.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Another one of those “Game of the Week” Battles as 11-4-1 Saint Claire Shores comes to visit 13-2-1 Mackinac Island. Get ready for a show. Oh yeah, division rivals, and Mitten State rivals.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE As Bernie Federko said after the game, “Boy that was a lot of f*#@%ing goals.” A game that would consume way too much space in a play-by-play. So boiling it down…………..

Moose jump out early with a PP goal by Maruk. Then the Saints take complete control and rattle off 4 goals (Bridgman, Federko, Verbeek, and Craven (shorty)) to make it 4-1. the Moose get a late goal by Propp to make it 4-2 at the first break.

It’s all Moose in the first half of the second as they rattle off 3 goals (Frycer, Goring, and Kurri) to take a 5-4 lead late in the 2nd. Federkok puts in the equalizer late in the period and it’s tied at 5.

Saints on a powerplay take the lead back with a goal by Gustafsson. Moose answered with a goal by Kurri at the 10-minute mark. Sanity reigns for a little bit and we pass the 2-minute mark. All hell breaks loose as Nilan and Gustafsson score 26 seconds apart, and the Moose pull the goalie in a last-gasp effort. A few shots, and then the puck turns over, and Francis brings the proceedings to a close with an empty netter, making the final 9-6 Saints.

The goalies leave the ice in tears.

Interviewed after the game, coach Borzenski said, “We are burning that game tape and pretending it never happened. Let’s go to the Mustang Lounge and drink this one away.”

1st star – Federko 2G 3pts
2nd – Gustafsson 2G 3pts
3rd – Bridgman 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints lead the rivalry so far with 1 win and 1 tie. I’m sure neither goalie feels terribly great, especially after the Mustang.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Michigan travels to St. Clair Shores for their solo game at home this week.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Michigan gets on the board early with two goals in the first. Shedden and Beers score.

Then, the Saints go on quite the run and score five straight goals in the 1st and 2nd. Then, the Saints hold the Stags off the board in the 3rd. Bozek and McCarthy each score 2 goals for the Saints.

SCS 5 Michigan 2

1- McCarthy
2- Bozek
3- Bridgman

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints defeat the Stags, 5-2 in a game at St. Clair Shores.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A couple of big games this week as Andes, just behind us in the standings, and Mackinac Island, best in the league, come to town.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Fox got the scoring started late in the 1st for a 1-0 Andes lead after 1. Delorme tied it 59 seconds into the 2nd. Andes jumps ahead with 4 seconds left on a PP goal by McEwen for a 2-1 lead after 2. Andes dominated the play, outshooting Texas 23-8 thru 2, but only manages a 1-goal lead. But…..that will be enough as the 3rd is scoreless. Texas does outshoot Andes 12-6, mainly with the goalie pulled at the end, but can’t get one past Millen

3 Stars
1. Fox (AND) 1G
2. McEwen (AND) 1G
3. Delorme (TEX) 1G

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS This was a rough affair, with a couple of fights and a few roughing penalties. Taylor gets it started for Tex but DeBlois answers for Mac. Plett gets one in late for a 2-1 Texas lead after 1. The second belonged to Mac and Propp, who scores the only 2 goals for a 3-2 Mac lead after 2. Zezel gets the insurance and Mac wins it 4-2.

3 Stars (all Mac)
1. Propp – 2G
2. Zezel – 1G
3. DeBlois – 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Texas played a couple of good teams close, but getting no points out of it is disappointing.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A pair of close ones, but in the end both W’s.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The bad news is the Charlotte Dynamo found itself entering this week in the basement of the Patrick division after a patented slow start (5-7-2), early in a season where the franchise was confident of a second straight playoff appearance and taking the next step. The good news is the season is still young with only a six-point separation between the best and worst in a division that seems up for grabs for anyone who can go on a hot streak. The lone home game of the week is a key division contest against a Pittsburgh division rival who is enjoying a bounce-back year at 7-6-1 thanks in part to a revamped impressive first line featuring Steve Larmer and Michel Goulet.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte knew it would be in for a fight against an improving Spirit squad that it had settled for a 1-1 tie within the first week of the season. And less than nine minutes into the game, all indications suggested it was going to be a long night for the home team. At the 5:50 mark, Larmer found the net off assists from Goulet and first-line center Mike Rogers for a 1-0 edge. A minute later, Spirit starting goalie Kelly Hrudey was cited for a slashing penalty, but it was Pittsburgh who scored on the Dynamo power play, with fourth-liner Steve Kasper getting inserted on special teams and beating Dynamo goalie Andy Moog at the 8:34 mark of the first period to put the visitors ahead 2-0. The assists on the shortie came from Thomas Steen and defenseman Normand Rochefort.

Charlotte fought back late in the first period, however, with an even-strength goal with 5:38 left in the first from Glenn Anderson (six goals entering the week). That seemed to wake up the host Dynamo, who struck for two more even-strength goals early in the second period, one from Rick Vaive and another from Anderson near the midway mark that put the home team ahead, 3-2.

Moog (33 saves total) and Hrudey (35 saves) were sensational in nets throughout the remainder of the game, but when Charlotte defenseman Randy Moller collected two back-to-back penalties late in the third period, the Spirit looked poised to get a tying goal. Charlotte killed off the first penalty. On the second Moller penalty (for cross-checking with 5:41 left in the third), the Spirit put its power play unit back on the ice. Goulet attempted a nifty wraparound that forced Moog to make an incredible save; then just moments later during the power play, Goulet was knocked off the puck by Charlotte defenseman Mats Thelin. The result was a Laurie Boschman breakaway; the Charlotte forward skated in and beat Hrudey on a shorthanded goal with 4:24 left in the third that sealed a 4-2 comeback win for the Dynamo.

After its 2-0 lead, Pittsburgh fired 15 shots apiece in the second and third but Moog saved the day and shut the Spirit down entirely those last two periods, overcoming his sluggish start.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1. Anderson 2 G
2. Vaive 1 G
3. Moog 33 saves

Notable: Charlotte narrowly outshoots Pittsburgh, 39-35. Both teams give up a shorthanded goal and neither can capitalize on the power play with Charlotte 0 for 4 and the Spirit unable to capitalize on its two chances with the extra man in the third.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Indicative of how evenly balanced all these teams are in the Patrick division, Charlotte, not surprisingly ekes out a win over Pittsburgh at home in a contest not decided until the final minutes. The division race remains incredibly tight with Charlotte improving to 6-7-2 and Pittsburgh dropping to 7-7-1 after this contest.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Stags look to get back on track after 3 straight home ice losses. The Legends, Moose, and Chiefs comprise the opposition.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Michigan (Beers) trailed Ohio (Lemay, Sutter) 2-1 after one period. But second-period scores by Jonsson and Carpenter staked the Stags to a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. There would be no further scoring until “Johnny O” deposited one into the empty net as time ran out making it a 5-2 final, and Michigan stops its home ice losing skid.
GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags dominated statistically, outshooting the visitors 53-17, out-chancing them 69-35, and having a TOA edge of 8:06 to 2:17. But Gilles Meloche stood on his head for the Moose, and Brian Propp and Paul MacLean each scored their second goals of the game just 41 seconds apart in the second half of the third period, propelling Mackinac Island to a stunning 4-3 victory. Bob Janecyk, who managed to make only 13 stops, left the ice at the game’s end to a resounding chorus of jeers and boos.
GAME #3: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Michigan led 4-0 (Shedden, Carpenter, Turgeon, Beers) early in the second period, only to see the Chiefs (Dineen, MacInnis, Young) rebound to make it a one-goal game by the 11:25 mark of the period. But before the second period was over, Bobby Carpenter’s second of the night and Mark Kirton’s 3rd shorthanded tally of the season put Michigan in front 6-3. In the third, Krushelnyski for the Chiefs and Routsalainen for the Stages exchanged goals, to make the final score a 7-4 win for Michigan.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A decent homestand, as Michigan takes 4 of a possible 6 points. But they let 2 points getaway in the Mackinac loss.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Drakes get 3 at home against New Castle, Hyannisport, and Charlotte
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes get the early jump on New Castle from goals by Dionne, Mullen, and Greschner and head to the first intermission up 3-0…….but the Ducks do not go down without a fight, Hiemer and Stastny score goals in the second to cut the score to 3-2 going into the third period. Both teams clamped down in the third and total of 11 shots combined in the third with Dave Reid scoring for the Drakes to end the game 4-2.
GAME #2: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes come out and dominate the first period and score 3 on the presidents and lead 3-0 after one. Mike Bullard scores the only goal in the second and the President’s trail 3-1 after two. Dave Reid scores early in the 3rd as the Drakes look to cruise 4-1 as they continue dominance…..and even after Dale Hunter makes it 4-2, the Drakes looked in control, but Bullard and Housley score 30 seconds apart from each other and the Presidents tie the game and head into overtime. 37 seconds in Mike Bullard completes the hat trick and the upset… Presidents 5, Drakes 4
GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Dynamo come out firing with a pair of goals from Rick Vaive and lead 2-0 after the first period. John Anderson scores a goal on the power play for the Drakes but Dale Hawerchuk answers to take the game to 3-1, Illka Sinisalo made it 3-2 going into the second intermission. The third period belongs to the Drakes as Marcel Dionne and Joey Mullen scores twice as the Drakes take it 5-3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: As Meatloaf sang, two out of three ain’t bad.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games.
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT A good back-and-forth game. PIT takes the 4-3 lead on a short-handed goal with 1:26 left in the game… but Kamsack gets the PP goal from Stastny with the 2-man advantage (pulled goalie) to tie it with 23 seconds left!

Go to OT and both goalies stop players on breakaways… but it was Stastny again (hat trick) who scored with 44 seconds left to give Kamsack the 5-4 win in OT!

GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Pittsburgh was all business in this one. Scoring 4 unanswered goals in the 1st period, Larmer with the Hat Trick.

In the 2nd, Hiemer (2) would get the first for New Castle, but Goulet gets it back on the PP. 5-1 Spirit lead.

Goulet (13) would add another to make the final score 6-1.

Larmer with the HT, Goulet with 2G, 2A, and Hrudey with 28 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 out of 4 points. Not bad, but the Kamsack game was completely winnable! Still unsure of this team. On paper should be better than their record. Maybe some more tweaks are needed.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes week 5.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The division rival Chiefs are our first guests for week 5. One point ahead in the standings of the home side, a win this day would have us leapfrog into second. Things start out promisingly enough as we go up 1 – 0 but before we know it the Chiefs are up 4 -1. We’d make it closer in the end but still lose 6 – 4.

1st Star – MacInnis
2nd Star – Lemieux
3rd Star – Tremblay

GAME #2: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS We welcome Norris member Haynnisport to town. We’re finding that home ice isn’t really helping us out as the Presidents tie in the final minute of the 3rd and then very early on in OT leave with the victory.

1st Star – Babych
2nd Star – Tonelli
3rd Star – Housley

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes recent struggles continue as they drop 2 home games this week.
