WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago splits at home.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games. Still don’t know if we’re a contender or a pretender.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Was winning 4-2 in the 3rd, and then the wheels fell off with Foligno (9) and Gretzky (9, 10) scoring three to make it a 5-4 Portland win.
GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Mackinac Island comes to town, Goulet and Company pull off a home win 4-2.
GAME #3: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT PIT mumps out to 4-0 lead in the 1st. Then, Andes comes back over the course of the 2nd and 3rd to tie it 4-4.

In OT, Smail (5) is the hometown hero as the Spirit win in OT 5-4.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Three home games, two wins. 4 of 6 points. Not bad… but still not sure about this group.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers host 2 this week as they try to continue their surprising start. The team basically working with 4 balanced (but not overly stellar) lines and the offense is clicking and the defense is hanging in there.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS 1st up are the Brahmas and they swap goals with the Rangers in the 1st with Robinson getting the 1st one for the Rangers early in the period and Acton tying it up for Texas late in the period. But then the Rangers pull out ahead with 2 1/2 to go in the 1st on a McNab goal and they never look back.

Robinson scores his 2nd (PP) for CapJack in the 2nd and Boutilier (mc)Nabs a PP goal in the 3rd to seal the deal. Final 4-1 Rangers.

STARS (all CAP)
1. Robinson 2 goals
2. McNab 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Weeks 35 saves
The Brahmas outshot the Rangers 59-38 and 36-25 SOGs and lead in scoring chances (22-13) but Weeks held his ground (and going 2 for 5 on the PP didn’t hurt either, while shutting down 4 of 4 Brahmas PP attempts).

GAME #2: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The Rangers PA system even honored the team from Cape Cod with some Hail to the Chief strands on the organ – done in an effort to get the President’s big-headed – and it seems to have helped. Maybe ….

An early roughing penalty by the Rangers Donnelly opened the door for a Tonelli PP goal and a 1-0 lead for the Presidents less than 6 minutes into the game. But in the final 4 minutes of the period, the Rangers were able to flip that 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. First Russell gets his 1st of the season with 4 to go and then McNab takes advantage of the Babych tripping penalty by scoring the PP goal and the Rangers end up leading 2-1 after 1. The 1st period ended up rather chippy as Lanz and Robertson go off for fighting with 4:03 to go. Then the Babych penalty and then Bellows and Barr tangle with just over a minute left in the period. As the 1st-period buzzer goes off, there are still 4 guys in the sin bins!!

The 2nd period sees 10 more penalty minutes – Leeman for Hyannisport goes off early for hooking, then Kromm exits for 2 minutes for cross-checking, and the Redmond (unsportsmanlike) and Crowder (roughing) tangle for coincidental minors, and finally Hunter for the President’s gets his 1st 2 minutes of the game with 7 to go. Lots of action for the Penalty Box monitors. So did anyone take advantage of these infractions? Well, yes, Pettersson gets a PP goal on the first Hyannisport penalty (3:25). Then when the teams are at full strength he scores again (10:55), and then he completes the natural hat trick scoring with 5 to go giving the Rangers a 3-0 second period and running the score to 5-1 through 2 periods.

Good thing because Hyannisport mounts a charge in the 3rd with Babych scoring 3 minutes in and then Laughlin scores with 6 1/2 to go to cut the Rangers lead to 5-3. As the game winds down, the Presidents keep attacking, bringing in more skaters (well 1) but Kromm is able to fire one at the empty net and scores with 7 seconds left to make the final 6-3!

Game stat – between the two teams there were 49 SOGs (26 for the Presidents, 23 for the Rangers). But there were 50 penalty minutes (22 for the Presidents and 28 for the Rangers)!!

STARS (all CAP)
1. Pettersson 3 goals, 1 assist (natural hat trick)
2. McNab 1 goal
3. Kromm 1 goal

Crowder had fun game with 3 assists. Torrie Robertson had 15 PIM and now has 84 for the 21 games he’s played leading the league and running at a 4 PIM/game clip!! Watch out – he might be carrying a Harry Howell hatchet!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers get 2 home games this week and amass 4 more points. They keep working on winning the games they have a chance in, it builds up points and they will need them.
Hyannisport Presidents
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With just 6 wins in 20 games and giving up the most goals in the MWOTHL, the Presidents look to right the ship on a 3-game home stand.
GAME #1:

PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

The Spirit lead this one 3-1 after two periods but out of nowhere, the Presidents explode for FIVE unanswered goals all in the 3rd period. D-man Dave Pichette has 4 points for Hyannisport and five other players have multipoint games. FINAL SCORE PIT 3 – HYP 6
GAME #2:

OHIO LEGENDS

VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

The Presidents jump all over the Legends early and hold a 3-1 lead at the end of the 1st period. Ohio pours on 30 shots during the 2nd and 3rd periods Richard Sevigny is sharp for the home team as Hyannisport holds for the win. Phil Houseley has 2 goals and an assist for the victors. FINAL SCORE OHI 3 – HYP 4
GAME #3:

SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS

VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Once again the Presidents jump out to a big early lead getting 1st-period goals from John Tonelli, Brian Bellows, and Wayne Babych. Hyannisport’s 3rd string goalie Ken Wregget turns aside 28 Saint Clair to secure the shutout (much to the amazement of the fans). FINAL SCORE SCS 0 – HYP 3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Hyannisport manages (at least for now) to stabilize the defense and pleasantly surprises their fans by going 3-0 on the home stand with a final game shutout adding a nice exclamation mark. Pichette and Housley chip in 5 points apiece during the three-game set.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints host Chicago and New Castle this week.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Nilan gets the scoring going early for the Saints. Chicago gets 3 consecutive goals by Stastny (2) and Bossy. Macoun with a goal for SCS, but Chicago gets an insurance goal.

Chicago 4 SCS 2

1-Stastny
2-Bossy
3-Lindbergh

GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS New Castle scores the first two goals of the game as Meagher and Lysiak score goals. The Saints score two to tie it.

2nd period- Napier scores for the Ducks and Nilan scores for the Saints. Late in the 2nd, Meagher scores again.

3rd period – Both teams exchange goals.

New Castle 5 SCS 4

1-Hardy
2-Meagher
3-Nilan

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints have a disappointing home stand as they lose to Chicago and New Castle.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two at home this week for the Ducks. First, old rival CapJack comes to town. Then conference rival Michigan.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 3 CAP 0

The CapJack Rangers and the New Castle Ducks have had a long and storied rivalry. Bad blood exists between these two clubs, going back to the 1982-83 Stanley Cup Finals when the Ducks came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the Cup. Coach Schindel is still upset about that!
The bad blood spilled over in this week’s game as the teams combined for a season-high total of 111 penalty minutes in a game marked by EIGHT FIGHTS!
When the two teams got around to playing hockey, it was all Ducks as a Rick Middleton goal (9) gave them a 1-0 lead after two periods. Early in the third, Terry Ruskowski gave New Castle breathing room with his 6th goal of the year. Brad McCrimmon got a huge insurance goal at 9:35. Meanwhile, John Vanbiesbrouck stopped all 31 shots on goal to gain his first-ever MWOTHL shutout.
As for the fights, tough guys Gary Rissling of the Ducks and Terri Robertson of the Rangers set the stage. The two went at it at 10:37 of the first period with Rissling getting the better of the fight. So they did it again at 12:52 of the second as Rissling once again got the better of it. Robertson didn’t give up easily and so the two fought YET AGAIN at 8:24 of the third period! At one point, CapJack had a .5 intimidation rating against – the highest I have ever seen in a game! It wasn’t only Rissling and Robertson who decided to duke it out. In a span of 37 seconds midway through the third period, there were four separate fights! At 10:08 of the third, Keith Crowder and Tiger Williams went at it. And then 23 seconds later things really exploded as Trottier and Middleton squared off, with Middleton pummeling Trottier – and Boutillier and Lewis fought at the same time. Not only did all four get fighting penalties but Middleton received a GAME MISCONDUCT. And the fighting still wasn’t over. Fourteen seconds after those four went to the sin bin – Arniel and Kleinendorst went at it. The penalty box was so full that not all the players’ names could fit on the screen at the top of the scoreboard! At 18:17 there was yet another fight as Kromm and Hardy each got five-minute majors. It was literally FIGHT NIGHT AT THE DUCK POND! And it will be interesting to see what happens the next time these two teams meet.

Robertson had 17 PIM, Rissling 15, and Middleton 15. Boutilier had 10

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Vanbiesbrouck 31 saves SHUTOUT
2- NCD Terry Ruskowski 1 G
3- NCD Brad McCrimmon 1G

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 2 MIC 1 OT

A tight-checking tense game goes to the Ducks as Mark Johnson scored twice. First, Johnson tied it at 1-1 at 6:24 of the third period. Then Johnson got the winner in overtime at 4:02. Johnson now has 14 goals on the season.

Shots on goal were virtually even with MIC having a 27-26 edge.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Johnson 2G
2- NCD Billy Smith 26 saves
3- NCD Mark Napier 2A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get the maximum four points and improve to 11-9-2 as their surprising start continues
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte’s MWOTHL entry entered the week in last place in the Patrick Division with a record of 6-9-2.  As we approach the quarter pole, the franchise is wondering if it will continue its drive toward contention, or, conversely, start a retooling process, selling off some pieces so it can keep its salary cap house in order and look toward the future. The Dynamo staff has addressed some usage issues early (i.e. get the third-string goalie’s games the heck out of the way) and ironed out wrinkles with its lineup but needs to focus on getting to .500 soon then potentially making a push – otherwise let the selling begin! The home games for Charlotte this week are against New Castle followed by Portland.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The one-time champion Ducks, playing impressive .500 hockey supported by great defensive pairings and a young rising goaltending star in John Vanbiesbrouck entered this game on a mission as it contends in the Norris. Vanbiesbrouck in the opening minutes made some impressive saves (he finished with 10 in total for the period). But the Dynamo broke through first. At the 10:30 mark of the opening period, third-line center Tom Fergus, quiet thus far this season, broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal.

New Castle looked for the equalizer, following a late cross-checking penalty to Charlotte left winger Curt Fraser, with about a minute and a half left in the period. Instead, the Dynamo got a morale-booster entering the locker room when with just two ticks on the clock when Paul Gillis chipped a pass ahead to Laurie Boschman who beat Vansbriesbrouk a low-stick side wraparound goal, good for a shorthanded goal and 2-0 lead.

Charlotte capitalized on the special teams again in the second – this time on the power play – when Fraser converted an assist by Hall of Famers Dale Hawerchuk and Lanny McDonald 4:12 into the second for the 3-0 Dynamo advantage.

The Ducks fired a steady stream of goals against Warren Skorodenski (15) in the second period and finally cashed in when Ric Middleton scored off assists from Mark Johnson and Rick Middleton and closed the deficit to 3-1, with 3:14 left in the second. New Castle was indeed alive.

We go to the third and it was here that Charlotte’s unsung hero of this campaign, Boschman again shined with an even-strength goal at 3:22 in off an assist from McDonald that salted it away. Hawerchuk added a late goal with 3:42 in regulation off an assist from defenseman Randy Moller as the Dynamo prevailed 5-1.

Three stars all Charlotte:
Star 1: Boschman 2 G
Star 2: Hawerchuk 1 G 2 Pots
Star 3: Skorodenski 28 saves

Notable: New Castle outshot Charlotte 29-25, but only mustered eight shots in the third when the game still hung in the balance.

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo’s offensively balanced attack was braced for a test as it hosted a top-heavy and competitive Sasquatch team led by the Great One and Dino Ciccarelli. And it was Gretzky (two goals) and Ciccarelli (one) who spearheaded the Sasquatch to a 4-2 lead by early in the third. Portland had seized a 3-0 lead through the early second period; Charlotte rallied with a couple from Boschman and Glenn Anderson and then number 99’s second goal for Portland with 2:42 into the third had provided his team with a 4-2 cushion.

What followed was Charlotte’s best third period of the season. The Dynamo stunned the Sasquatch with five unanswered goals, all from different players to rally for the 7-4 win.

The Dynamo erased Portland’s 4-2 lead on special teams; a power play goal from Fraser was followed up by a shorthanded goal by Boschman with 13:13 left in regulation. McDonald provided the game-winner with 9:37 left in the third that put Charlotte ahead 5-4. Fourth liner Louis Sleigher added an even-strength goal with 5:09 left to give the Dynamo the insurance it needed, and Hawerchuk added an empty netter for good measure with a minute left.

Three stars:
Star 1: POR Gretzky 2 G, 3 Pts
Star 2: Hawerchuk 1 G, 4 Pts
Star 3: Boschman 2 G

Notable: The Dynamo doubled Portland in shots on goal, 44-22, and found the net on five of its 11 shots in the third period as it rallied. Sasquatch backup goalie Corrado Micalef played exceptionally through the first two periods, saving 33 shots while allowing just two goals, before wilting in the third; he finished with 37 saves. This penalty-filled game included 14 penalties with both teams one for three on the power play.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Dynamo, in what proved to be a pivotal week where it could not afford to fall further back, gets the hope it needs with a couple of wins at home to pull within a game of .500. Skorodenski (now 3-2) gets two critical wins for the team, and his save percentage is an impressive .924 through six games. Offensively, the lines, led by Boschman’s heroics, begin to gel. After this week’s games the top liners of Boschman, Anderson, and Hawerchuk at center all boast at least 10 goals apiece through 19 played games (with road games to be recorded).
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Kamsack and Texas provide the opposition in this segment while the Stags continue to play without Mark Messier and Colin Patterson
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Michigan outshoots the Cyclones 43-32, out-chances them 39-18, and wins 63% of the faceoffs. But the visitors nevertheless capture a 6-4 victory thanks to 2G+1A each from Christian and Gradin and a shaky performance from Grant Fuhr in the Stags’ nets.
GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Looking to rebound from the Kamsack loss, the Stags did and in a BIG way, getting their biggest offensive output of the season, a dominating 9-2 win, sending the Brahmas back to the Lone Star state with their tails between their legs. The Stags Tomas Jonsson had an incredible night with a hat trick of PPGs plus 2 assists. SOG was even at 29, but Texas’ Denis Herron had a performance that he’d just as soon forget.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A win and a loss continue Michigan’s run of inconsistency.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Week 6 of the MWOTHL
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The #1 rated Moose are our guests for week 1. Considering how crappy we’ve been playing coming into this game the Mountaineers aren’t overly confident about getting a positive result. The home squad comes out on fire and after the first 20 is up 2 – 0. The 2nd 20 sees the talent of the Moose start to dominate to take a 3 – 2 lead. Things are going the same way as the rest of the season has gone but with 10 seconds Naslund ties things up. This positive swing sees Andes get two more goals in the first half of the final period to take the lead 5 – 3. The Moose are able to get one back with 1:01 left in the game but Andes is able to hold on and send the fans home happy.

1st Star – Muller
2nd Star – Gilmour
3rd Star – Naslund

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Doesn’t get any easier as our 2nd game is against Norris-leading Dallas. Andes scores a minute into the game and gets it up to 2 – 0. The Drakes offense fights back to tie it. With a minute left in OT, it’s looking like a tie but Sundstrom changes all that and the Drakes win the game.

1st Star – Sinisalo
2nd Star – Sundstrom
3rd Star – Romano

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Week 6 Andes goes 1 – 1. We upset the Moose but lose to the Drakes in OT. Two pretty good games overall.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game at the Patty this week sees Ohio come to town. After a fast start, Texas has really been struggling.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Graham scores for Ohio early in the 1st, but Kurvers answers, and Taylor nets one with under a minute to go for a 2-1 Texas lead after 1. Playfair extends the lead to 3-1 with the only goal of 2nd. Things remain the same until Graham gets his second at 17:10 to pull Ohio within 1. With the goalie pulled, Kerr ties it up at 19:28. After a scoreless OT, both teams settle for the tie. Very disappointing for Texas.

3 Stars

1. Graham (OH) – 2G
2. Kurvers (Tex) – 1G, 1A
3. Taylor (Tex) – 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Better than a loss, I guess…..
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game this week on the Island. Charlestown Chiefs.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE In a very contentious 1st period, nearly 10 minutes see one team or the other on the PP. For 4 of the 5, it’s the Chiefs flailing away at the Moose goal. The Moose get just 1 PP opportunity. All are futile, as is the rest of the period. The Moose look lifeless and error-prone, managing only 3 SOG. The Chiefs miss on 16. 0-0 at the break.

The Chiefs break it open with a Tremblay goal 90 seconds into the period. A Bothwell minor puts the Moose on PK, and they are successful for the 5th time in the game. Young with a minor gives the Moose a chance, but once again the Moose struggle to get even one SOG. Just past the halfway point, Coffey finds the back of the net, and the Chiefs inch out to a 2-0 lead. Later, Lemieux with a penalty opens the door for the Moose, but once again, hardly a shot on goal. Just after the penalty expires, Maruk gets the Moose on the board. and we go to break 2-1 Chiefs. Moose is down 6-26 in SOG for the game.

A blistering locker room session results in the Moose getting some offense generated in the 3rd. Unfortunately, the period starts trying to kill off a double minor, and Krushelnyski puts a goal on the board for the Chiefs early. The Moose control play most of the period, but can only manage one goal, MacLean, before we get to the final 2 minutes. Down 3-2, The Moose let Dineen slip by and add the insurance goal, 4-2, before a pulled goalie and the 6 on 5 get the Moose their 3rd goal, Propp. Too many errors and penalties cost the Moose this one, 4-3.

1st star – Coffey 1G 2pts
2nd – Krushelnyski 1G 2pts
3rd – Tremblay 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Can’t win with 14 minutes on the penalty kill, and embarrassingly few shots on goal. Ugh, what an ugly performance.
Charlestown Chiefs

Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome the Andes Mountaineers for the lone game at Legends Arena this week.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 3, Andes 0

Dan Bouchard comes up strong with a 30-save performance in notching the shutout for Ohio. The Legends took advantage on the power play, cashing in twice on six opportunities. The penalty kill was up to the challenge, stopping all four chances for Andes.

Moe Lemay, Brian MacLellan, and Mike Allison netted the lamp lights for Ohio.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio gets the win in its lone home game of the week.

GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH CapJack gets goals from Pettersson (5) and Barr (8) to win 2-0
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland splits home series
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Texas and Ohio come to town.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Marcel Dionne gets the Drakes on the board at 10:54 of the first period but Petr Svoboda beats Hanlon with a wrister with the teams knotted at 1 at the break. The game stays 1-1 as Murray Bannerman and Glen Hanlon keep the score tied going into the third period. Dave Taylor gives the Brahmas the lead early in the third and the game stays that way until the Drakes pull Hanlon, Dionne hits the post and then Bannerman stones Mullen on a rebound shot, Svoboda would get the puck as the Brahmas work it out of the zone and caps the game with an empty netter…. 3-1 Texas with the win.
GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. DALLAS DRAKES In a defensive first period, Tim Kerr nets the only goal of the first period. The Legends stay up 1-0 until 13:28 Ron Greschner ties the game for the Drakes and it stays 1-1 at the end of 2. Rod Langway haunts his own ex-club by notching his first goal of the season, but John Anderson strikes back at 2:48 of the third period. Marcel Dionne puts the Drakes up 3-2 but Randy Carlyle ties it up 3-3. The game stays tied until 17:19 when Ken Linseman puts the Drakes up for good…..and finishes with an empty netter 5-3 Drakes.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Splitsville.
