CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers have been doing better than expected and hope to continue the trend. This week they host two games – Ohio plays solid with a strong defense, and Mackinac Island – the TOP team in the league with the best offense and strong defense – strong defense seems to be the factor the Rangers have to go against this week.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS 1st period sees the teams matching up in the score, however, it was the Rangers who tried to take the game. But that Ohio defense, primarily Pat Riggin who faced 21 SOGs stopped 20 of them. Crowder gets one past him midway through the period but that only tied the game as Olczyk scored early. That was 1 of only 6 shots. The 2nd period starts with the game’s #1 star, Smith, scoring a PP goal 2 minutes in. Then MacLellan makes it 3-1 Ohio halfway through and it looked like it was a lock for the 2nd until Arniel squeezes one past Riggin with 7 ticks left on the 2nd-period clock. 3-2 Ohio heading to the 3rd.

Both teams played tight for the opening half of the 3rd but then Smith gets his 2nd goal of the game for a 2-goal Ohio lead with 8 1/2 to go. Lemay then makes it a 3-goal lead when he scores with 3 1/2 to go. Riggin stays strong and holds off the Rangers the rest of the way and Ohio pulls out a big 5-2 win.

STARS (all OHI)
1. Smith 2 goals 1 assist
2. Riggin 36 saves
3. Olczyk 1 goal

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Well we dropped one in Ohio so bring on Mackinac Island (hmm – Ohio/Michigan in the same week….)
Oh boy – here we go. MacLean gets the Moose going in under 3 minutes as he scores right after a Crowder penalty ends as he beats Weeks low on the stick side. 1-0 MIM Moose controlled the period but that was the only goal as we headed to intermission. The home locker room was intense and the Rangers come out strong McNab beats Gonsolin with a wraparound a minute into the period. The goal was a PP opportunity set up by a Propp tripping penalty as the 1st period ended. Right after the goal, Frycer got nabbed big time for a 5-minute cross-checking penalty. And all of a sudden the Rangers PP squad seemed unbeatable as Suave and Crowder both scored PP goals. That’s 3 PP goals within 2 1/3 minutes and by the 4-minute mark, the Rangers have grabbed a 3-1 lead.
PP goals weren’t done! Suave is whistled for hooking and the Moose capitalize when MacLean gets his 2nd goal of the game Mackinac Island pulls to within 3-2 and that’s how the period ends. 4 PP goals in the 2nd.3rd period settles down – 5 minutes in MacLean and Beck both go off – no PP, but then with 9 minutes to go Seiling goes off for 4 minutes for high sticking. 2nd long PP for the Rangers! Shortly into the 1st half of the PP, Crowder gets his 2nd PP goal for CapJack and a 4-2 lead. Rangers then keep it that way until the final minute when the Moose bring in the extra attacker – and their strategy pays off when Kurri scores with 15 seconds left. 4-3 CapJack. Moose call timeout. Trottier controls the faceoff and kicks it out but the Moose grab it, Maruk crosses the blue line, to Bothwell, who skates wide and slaps it – it’s wide and the game ends and the Rangers win the game 4-3!!!!STARS
1. CAP – Crowder 2 goals (both PP and a GWG)
2. MIM – MacLean 2 goals
3. CAP – McNab 1 goal 1 assist5 straight PP goals in this game, 4 for CapJack. Pettersson takes advantage as he sets up 3 of them!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Rangers get 2 points in 2 home games. Not bad especially when the win comes against Mackinac Island.

Portland 5 SCS 4

1-Lamoureux
2-Siltanen
3-Ellett

GAME #2: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Its funny how Barrasso an “8” goalie seems to get bombed a lot. He gives up 7 goals and is pulled midway through the 2nd. SCS scores 5 unanswered goals to close out the game and nip Andes.

SCS 9 Andes 8

1-Murray
2-Fox
3-Bozek

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints split and lose to Portland and defeats Andes.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week…against the upstart Kamsack Cyclones. Should be a tough game
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS KAM 4 NCD 2
Kamsack invades The Duck Pond and comes away with the win. The Ducks scored first on a first-period power-play goal by Denis Potvin (4). KAM tied it up less than 3 minutes later on a nice score by Gilbert Perrault (11).
Ducks took the lead, 2-1, early in the second when Pat Hickey scored shorthanded (5), his second shorthanded goal of the year. Once again, KAM tied it when Greg Malone (2) scored nearly midway through the second period. The teams went to the locker room, after the second period, tied at 2-2.
In the third, the Ducks started with the continuation of a power play, resulting from Bobby Gould’s hooking penalty with a minute to in the second. But it was the Cyclones who turned the tables as defenseman Paul Reinhart got a breakaway and put it past John Vanbiesbrouck – a SHORT-HANDED GOAL – and KAM had the lead for the first time, 3-2. Barely three minutes later, at 3:47, Dave Christian scored (8) a big insurance goal to make it 4-2. The Ducks had a 10-7 SOG advantage in the third period but could not score as KAM got the win, 4-2.KAM outshot NCD 32-26. Pete Peeters made 24 saves for KAMTHREE STARS:
1- KAM – Reinhart 1 G, 3 BS +2
2- KAM – Perrault 1G +2
3- KAM- Christian 1G
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get zero points at home and hope to pick up some points in their three road games
Hyannisport Presidents
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After a 3-0 home stand, last week can the Presidents keep it rolling?
GAME #1:

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Charlie Simmer puts the visitors up 1-0 midway thru the first period and then John Tonelli scores his 7th of the year to make it 1-1 early in the 2nd period. But Hyannisport wouldn’t generate much beyond that totaling just 13 shots on Charlotte goalie Andy Moog. FINAL SCORE CHA 3 – HYP 1
GAME #2:

ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

The Mountaineers visit Hyannisport in a matchup of two of the league’s worst teams. The Presidents immediately establish themselves as the lesser ones however getting blitzed for 3 goals in both the first and second periods. Trailing 6-0 the home team finally shows up for the 3rd period but it’s way too little too late. Jim Fox has a pair of goals and Larry Murphy tallies 3 assists for Anders. AND 6 – HYP 3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: After a strong showing at home last week the Presidents revert to form and are mostly non-competitive this week.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Cyclones and Ducks come to Bullwinkle Arena this week. A couple of teams with winning records will be a good test for the recently so-so Moose, only 5-4-1 in the last 10 games.
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose dominate the first 39 minutes, scoring 3 unanswered goals (MacLean, Maruk, and DeBlois). Late in the 2nd, a minor by the Cyclones, and then overlapping minors by the Moose give the Cyclones at 4 on 3, and then a 5 on 4, where the Cyclones get on the board with a goal from Wilson.

In the 3rd, coincidental minors open the ice up, and the Cyclones creep a little closer with a goal by Sundstrom. No damage and then we enter the final 2 minutes. Moose get control in the offensive zone and kill some time. Finally, a shot is saved, and the Cyclones move up the ice, pulling the goalie at the same time. Turnover in the neutral zone and the Moose move in to take advantage of the empty net. Moose lose the puck with 30 seconds to go. Cyclones come up ice, get a shot off, and Gartner scores off the rebound with 6 seconds left to tie it at 3. Overtime!

Both teams get 3 SOG in overtime, but no quality shots and the game ends tied 3-3.

1st star – DeBlois 1G
2nd – MacLean 1G
3rd – Maruk 1G (no love for Gartner and that last-second goal)

GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE The Moose dominate this one, 30-19 SOG, and Kurri goes wild with 4 goals. Beaupre with the clean sheet.

1st star- Kurri 4G
2nd – Beaupre 19 saves, shutout
1st – Frycer 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 points this week, should have been 4, but poor decision at the end of the 1st game. Should have been able to kill the clock there with the goalie on the bench.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 games this week against Mackinac Island, Capjack, and Michigan
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Moose jump out on the Drakes and get goals from Ric Seiling and Jari Kurri as the Moose lead 2-0 after 1. Reed Larson scores at the 1:52 mark as the Drakes cut the score to 2-1. Don Beaupre keeps the Drakes at bay and at 16:52 Paul MacLean gets the Moose up 3-1, but Wilf Paiment strikes back 24 seconds later and the Moose lead 3-2 after 2. Marcel Dionne scores at 3:22 to notch the game at 3 and a great back and forth 3rd period would ensue. The game would stay tied but at 19:37 Marcel Dionne would strike again and send the Dallas fans home happy, 4-3 Drakes
GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes come out firing and jump all over the Rangers with goals from Joe Mullen at 1:33 and Lindsay Carson at 3:45 but the Rangers would stem the tide and get a power play tally from Larry Robinson and take the game into the dressing room down 2-1. Lindsay Carson would score another power-play goal and the Drakes would go up 3-1. Keith Crowder would score on a tap-in from a great feed from Alan Haworth and the score would stay 3-2 Drakes at the end of two. With the Drakes on the Power play, Rob Ramage would fall at the blue line, and Bryan Trottier would score shorthanded as the Rangers tie the game at 3. The Rangers weren’t done and Peter McNab would put them ahead for good 4-3……with that being the final.
GAME #3: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Stags and the Drakes would get great goaltending from Grant Fuhr and Roberto Romano respectively. Ken Linseman would break the ice in the second period and give the Drakes a 1-0 lead at 4:49 but Bobby Carpenter would tie the game at 8:24 of the second period. Fuhr and Romano would trade save after save and gave would stay tied at 1 until 19:28 of the third period when Bob Manno would give the Drakes fans what they were looking for beating Fuhr and getting the game-winner. 2-1 Drakes
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 out of 3 ain’t bad
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Dallas wins 5-4 in the final two minutes with Dionne (13 and 14) scoring twice in 19 seconds.
GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Federko (10) ties it in the final minute with the goalie pulled and Francis (4) wins it in OT for St. Clair Shores.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two home games, two losses (one in OT). Disappointing week to put it mildly. This team is better on paper than it has performed. Might be selling sooner rather than later.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A whopping 4 games this week in Fort Worth. Struggling Texas is looking to get back on track.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Kurvers puts Texas up early, but Craven and Smith answer for St Clair and it is 2-1 after 1. Andreychuk returns to the lineup and ties the game at 2 after 2. The 3rd period is scoreless until the 18:48 mark when Craven nets his second for St Clair and they hold on for the 3-2 win.

3 Stars (all SCS)
1. Craven – 2G
2. Barrasso – 39 Saves
3. Smith – 1G

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Next up is Chicago. Texas comes out firing, as McClelland, Ruff, and Sutter score in the 1st for a 3-0 Texas lead after 1. Brian Sutter and Mondou score for Chicago to start the 2nd and cut it to 3-2 before LaFontaine restores the 2-goal lead after 2. The 3rd belongs to Chicago as Brown and Bossy score to tie the game, where it remains through OT for a 4-4 tie.

3 Stars (all TEX for some reason)
1. LaFontaine – 1G
2. Sutter – 1G
3. Ruff – 1G

GAME #3: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS And in comes Pittsburgh. Once again Texas strikes early and often as Playfair, Milbury, and Andreychuk score in the 1st for another 3-0 lead after 1. Rogers cuts it to 3-1 before Nilsson restores the lead to 2 after 2. And then another 3rd period…  Rogers, Goulet, Mantha, and Derlago all score for Pittsburgh, Texas is shut out in the period and Pitt leaves with a 5-4 victory.

3 Stars (all PIT)
1. Rogers 2G, 1A
2. Goulet 1G, 3A
3. Derlago 1G

GAME #4: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS And finally, New Castle ends a disappointing homestand. After a scoreless 1st, Sutter and Andreychuk score for Texas in the 2nd for a 2-0 lead after two periods of play.  Yet another 3rd period collapse? Not this time as Sutter, Pavelich, and Tucker all score, Herron shuts the door and Texas gets a 5-0 win.

3 Stars (all TEX)
1. Herron has 34 saves
2. Sutter 2G, 1A
3. Pavelich 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The final game salvages a little, but overall a bad homestand. Way too many blown leads late in games.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Dynamo, rated first in the league in defense as the week began (3.35 goals against per outing), is showing signs of life lately despite entering the week in the basement of the cutthroat Patrick Division. It entered the week all even at 9-9-2 (only good for last place) but collected two of three wins on the road (one yet to be reported), so a win in its only home game this week over Hyannisport would assure Charlotte of a winning record after all games of the week were completed.
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO This game showed promise to be tightly contested shortly after the puck dropped – but only briefly.

A goal from President’s third-line center Perry Turnbull 3:45 minutes into the game was answered by a goal from Charlotte center Dave Poulin one minute later and we had a 1-1 tie five minutes into the contest. But from there, the annihilation was on.

The Presidents scored four of the next five goals in the period to seize control of this game at 5-2 at the 18:51 mark of the first. When the onslaught was capped by a Mike Bullard goal (his second of four en route to a hat trick and then some), Andy Moog’s night was through, not having lasted even 19 minutes. In a rare hook by Dynamo coaches, Moog was yanked mercifully in favor of Doug Keans. The line couldn’t have been uglier: five goals let in against just six saves for a .545 save percentage.

Keans, however, didn’t fare much better as Hyannisport scored two of the first three goals of the second period to move ahead 7-3. Charlotte’s late comeback bid was way too little too late: goals with under five minutes to play by Poulin and Louis Sleigher, the latter coming in the final minute and following an empty netter by Bullard, made this 8-6 final seem a lot closer than it was.

Three stars:
1. HYA Bullard 4 G
2. CHD Poulin 2 G 3 Pts
3. HYA Phil Hously 1 G 3 Pts

Notables: Hyannisport’s Dale Hunter provided the intimidation factor in this one, logging 15 penalty minutes for fighting and receiving a game misconduct.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte’s top-rated defense abandons it and Andy Moog records what is arguably the worst showing by a goalie in Dynamo history – five goals in the net from 11 shots. Like my beer-hockey defensive partner John “the Chief” Crangle used to say, “there’s not much you can do when the goaltending is so soft”. And yes the guy was a throwback to the movie Slapshot; he hammered every opponent (male and female alike) into the boards and is still playing well into his 70s in Columbia SC. Great guy who I learned a lot from about hockey and life! Beyond that anecdote, not much to report on this one-sided affair.
Ohio Legends
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 5, Pittsburgh 3
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. OHIO LEGENDS Charlotte 5, Ohio 2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Split the home games this week.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Week 7 Andes hosting Cap Jack and Michigan
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Patrick division Rangers come to town. Andes jumps out to a 4 – 1 lead early on in the 2nd period only to slowly watch the lead shrink until it’s all tied and then with 1:34 left in the game they give the game away

1st Star – Petterson
2nd Star – Crowder
3rd Star – Beck

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Stags are the opponents for the second home game this week. This time around the Mountaineers find themselves trailing by more than 2 goals. This time around its the home squad who makes the comeback and with 5:55 left in the game they score the home winner and then hold on for dear life until the final whistle.

1st Star – Muller
2nd Star – Patterson
3rd Star – Ludwig

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes week 7. Two games were decided by 1 goal, one for a win and one for a loss.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Michigan and Kamsack visit Portland
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Michigan wins 6-5 in an offensive battle
GAME #2: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Kamsack win 7-2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland loses both games
