Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game at the Capone Center this week. The Underground are trying to dig themselves out of an early-season hole.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago holds a solid 3-1 lead at the end of two periods of play. The Mountaineers come back in the 3rd to tie it up at the end of regulation. Late in overtime Andes top Mountain Man- Mats Naslud wins it with less than a minute on the clock.

Final Score: Andes 4 – Chicago 3 (Overtime)

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – Peter Stastny 2G, 3Pts
Star 2: CHI – Denis Savard 1G, 2Pts
Star 3: AND – Doug Gilmour 1G

Game Winner: – Mats Naslund

Notables:
AND – None
CHI – Bob Froese 33 Saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The early season hole is getting deeper & deeper & some are even calling it a grave. But not Pelle Lindbergh. He says “It’s not deep enough yet boys, let’s go get a drink” and tries again on the road.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ducks have two home games this week. They enter the week with the worst offense in the MWOTHL. However, their solid defense has the Ducks playing at a surprising .500 pace. This week’s games are against two other low-scoring teams, Andes and Portland
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 5 AND 4 A thrilling win for the Ducks who blew a 3-0 lead, then tied it at 4-4 in the final minute before winning in OT!
The Duck’s #1 line scored three first-period goals as Mark Napier (6), Mark Johnson (15) and Rick Middleton (11) all lit the lamp. Trailing 3-0 in the second period, Andes mounted a comeback as Doug Daoust (2) and Mats Naslund (17) beat Vanbiesbrouck to make it 3-2 after two. In the third, Kirk Muller tied it at 1:31, and then at 14:08 Muller did it again, with his second of the game and his 8th of the year to give Andes a 4-3 lead.
It stayed that way until the Ducks tied it with 49 seconds to go, and their goalie pulled, when Middleton (12) put the puck past Greg Millen.
OT did not last long as Mark Johnson got a clean breakaway and scored (16) at the 31-second mark to give the Ducks an exciting 5-4 winTHREE STARS:
1- NCD Mark Johnson 2G 2 A 4 PTS
2- NCD Rick Middleton 2G 1 A 3 PTS
3- AND Kirk Muller 2G 1 A 3 PTSMillen made 30 saves as Andes outshot NCD 35-32
GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS The Ducks are last in the league in goals scored per game with Portland next to last. You wouldn’t know it when these two teams play. In their earlier meeting, the teams combined for 15 goals – the highest-scoring game for the Ducks this year. Tonight: NCD 6 POR 5

Portland led 2-1 after one as Guy Carbonneau (10) (on a breakaway) and Dino Cicarelli (7) scored for POR. Mark Kumpel (5) scored for NCD. In the second, the Ducks took the lead late as Tom Lysiak (7) and Mark Napier (7) beat Reggie Lemelin. 3-2 Ducks after two.
In the third, the Ducks made it 4-2 at the midway point on Don Maloney’s first goal as a Duck. McKenna scored a little under 3 minutes later to make it 4-3 with 7:10 to go. The Mountaineers pressed furiously but it was the Ducks who got a big insurance goal, at 16:19, when tough guy Gary Rissling got his second of the year. With over a minute to go, AND pulled the goalie only to see Ducks defenseman Dave Lewis score into an empty net (3) to make it 6-3. 12 seconds later with Lemelin back in goal AND scored as Lamoureux got his 5th and it was suddenly 6-4. Lemelin went to the bench once again and the Mountaineers did it again as Greg Gagne scored (9) with 18 seconds to go. But that was it as Andes failed to score despite three faceoffs in the Duck’s zone.

Doug Smith of NCD won 17 of 32 faceoffs.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Tom Lysiak 1G 2 A
2- NCD Don Maloney 1G 1A
3- POR Dino Ciccarelli 1G 1A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks have a good week getting the maximum four points and continue to be a pretender for a playoff spot
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers are continuing to be a surprising team (to themselves if no one else) and enter the week in 1st in the Patrick Division. This week they entertain Charlestown (1st in the Smythe), Michigan (last in the Adams), and Charlotte – the team to beat in the Patrick! On the road they face St. Clair Shores (2nd in the Adams) – so it’s a challenging week for CapJack.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS First up are the Chiefs and Beck gets the 1st goal of a high-scoring contest when he beats Hayward glove side low on a wrister with 6+ to go in the 1st. But Wilson responds for Charlestown 30 seconds later and it’s tied 1-1. But with 2 minutes to go Charlestown takes the lead when Coffey and Lemieux set up MacInnis for the go-ahead goal and it’s 2-1 Chiefs at the 1st intermission.

Not sure what the Rangers ate or drank during that intermission but the 2nd period was a blur the Chiefs would just as soon forget. Less than a minute into the 2nd and Kromm scores. Then 2 minutes later he scores again! 2 minutes later, Arniel scores to make it 4-2 Rangers. We’re not done and 40 seconds later Haworth scores. 5 minutes and 13 seconds into the 2nd and CapJack scores 4 times! And it’s 5-2. Then they have a chance for a PP goal when Krushelnyski goes off for hooking – BUT the Chiefs get back in the game when Lever and Coffey get the 2 on 1 and Coffey slides it over to Lever – shoots – Goal as he beat Resch on his glove side for the SH goal and that makes it 5-3 Rangers. But the Rangers are still juiced and just over 2 minutes later Donnelly gets past the defense and goes in on Hayward and beats him to make it 6-3 it also signaled the end of the game for Hayward as Penney comes in to play goal. That also marked the end of scoring for period 2, but the Rangers got 5 goals to grab the 6-3 lead.

So that’s a wrap – oh wait there is still another period to go. And the Chiefs come out like they want to win and then dump it into CapJack’s end in the opening minutes and Coffey gets it to Nicholls for the one-time and then MacLean deflects it and it flies past Resch and it’s now 6-4 with 18+ minutes to go! But then the scoring lamp goes dark for much of the rest of the period until the Chiefs again mount a rush and it’s MacInnis who finds the puck and fires it at Resch and beats him top shelf to pull the Chiefs within 1 at 6-, their 2nd PP goal of the game. Oh no! Then with a minute to go, the Chiefs go all in pulling Penney but Kromm upsets the Charlestown comeback attempt when he takes a pass from Sauve and fires it down the ice into the Chief’s empty net. 7-5 CapJact with 40 seconds to go and they hold on for the big win!

STARS
1. CAP – Kromm, hat trick 3 goals 1 assist
2. CHA – MacInnis 2 goals
3. CAP – Arniel 1 goal 1 assist

Goaltending left a lot to be desired. Haward got beat on 6 of the 23 shots he faced. Resch was a bit better at stopping 27 of the 32 he faced – but his rating for the game was 3.7!!

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Perhaps the “easiest” contest of the week for CapJack – but it sure didn’t seem easy. The Stags started fast scoring twice in the opening 5 1/2 minutes and didn’t stop until they had a comfortable 5-0 lead.

1st period Watters scores 2 1/2 in unassisted by pretty. Then 3 minutes later Patterson beats Weeks, 2-0. Then a Duguay goal with 6 1/2 to go makes it 3-0. 1st period ends that way.

2nd period Beers (the player, not the drink) makes it 4-0 just a minute into the period. 5 minutes later Patterson gets his 2nd of the game and that’s it for period 2, 5-0 Michigan with 20 minutes to go!

3rd period, McNab finally gets CapJack on the board when he scores a minute and a half in. Comeback? No – Duguay makes it 6-1 with his 2nd of the game 4 minutes in and with 16 to go, the Rangers find themselves in a big 6-1 hole. But then Trottier scores 30 seconds later, but the crowd can’t get the Rangers going. They do score 1 more, with just less than 5 to go, but down 6-3 they can’t make it up. The Stags owned the game! Well, they owned the SCORE and that’s the big thing. Rangers outshot (30-19), out face offed (57-42%) but they were out-goalied by Bester with a 90% saves rate.

STARS:
1. MIC – Duguay 2 goals 1 assist
2. MIC – Patterson 2 goals 1 assist
3. CAP – McNab 2 goals

GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CAPJACK RANGERS So that brings up the Charlotte game – maybe we were looking ahead because Charlotte has become a tough (but fun) opponent and they are knocking at the door as they have been climbing up the standings as the season progresses. Their secret weapon, Skorodenski will face Resch in goal. Skorodenski is a whopping 9.3 (and today he was a 9.5!) Resch got a boost to – all the way to 5.3, yikes).

1st big break of the game comes when Crowder is sent to the box for holding 5 minutes into the game. Charlotte responds with an Anderson PP goal 5:41 into the game. But CapJack responds when Arniel fires one past Skorodenski less than 2 minutes later and it’s tied 1-1. Rangers make it 2-1 when Boutilier slaps one into the net with 6 to go. But the Dynamo tie it up with 3 to go when Gillis scores on a slap shot!

That tied it up at 2-2 for the 1st intermission – however, it was the 1st of 3 straight Dynamo goals. Vaive (PP) and Fraser score for Charlotte in the 2nd and that was all the 2nd-period scoring even though it was a period where the Rangers were in control of the play most of the time firing 16 shots at Skorodenski – but that 9.5 ratings got the better of it!

Well got the better of it is relative to time and space. In the 3rd period, the Dynamo fired 14 on Resch and he stopped them all! Rangers fire 9 on Skorodenski – and lo and behold he only stops 5 of them. 4 Rangers goals in the 3rd snatch victory from defeat as Suave, Beck (PP), Kromm, and Haworth all light up the lamp, and CapJack pulls off the improbable 6-4 win!

STARS
1. CAP – Suave 1 goal 1 assist
2. CAP – Haworth 1 goal 1 assist
3. CHD – Vaive 1 goal 1 assist

Nice to win in the division!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers continue their smoke and mirrors and take 2 or 3 at home. If we can keep that up it will be a surprising season for sure.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Ohio hosts a pair of out-of-division opponents in New Castle and Kamsack.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 2, New Castle 2

New Castle got goals from Denis Potvin and Pat Hickey, while Ohio lit the lamp with scores from Tim Kerr and Dirk Graham. Billy Smith stopped 43 shots, while Dan Bouchard turned away 33, in the sister-lip-locking-affair.

GAME #2: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 4, Kamsack 1

Ohio scored all four goals in the third period, including a pair of empty netters.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio gets three of four possible points on the week.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Saints host Dallas and CapJack this week.
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Saints scored 2 goals in the 1st period and the Drakes scored 1. Federko and Craven scored for the Saints. Mullen scored his 15th for the Drakes.

in the 3rd, Scott Stevens scores his 7th. He also scores his 8th to close out the scoring as the Saints defeat the Drakes.

SCS 5 Dallas 2

1-Stevens
2-Craven
3-Federko

GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS CapJack comes to SCS. In the 1st, Scott Stevens scored and was matched by Larry Robinson.

In the 3rd, Bozek scores, and the Saints take the lead. Arniel scores for the Rangers to tie it.

We go to OT. Barr scores his 9th for the Rangers.

SOG – Saints 32 Rangers 23.

Rangers 3 Saints 2 (OT)

1-Arniel
2-Robinson
3-Barr

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints defeat Dallas and lose to the Rangers in OT.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Pittsburgh, Charlotte, and Sr. Clair Shores are on the docket
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. MICHIGAN STAGS By 6:32 of period 2, it was 6-0 for the Spirit, with ex-Stag Doug Smail scoring a pair. That marked the end of Bob Janecyk’s night as Pittsburgh rolled to the 8-4 win. The lone bright spot for Michigan was Doug Shedden with a pair of goals.
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Leading 6-5 with a little under 4 minutes left in the 3rd period, the Dynamo imploded, surrendering the GTC to Sylvain Turgeon at 16:16 and the GWG to Ron Duguay exactly 1 minute later. Michigan records a thrilling 7-6 victory that featured a natural hat trick by, of all people, Mark Kirton! Ron Duguay scored twice for the home team while Dale Hawerchuk had 3 helpers for Charlotte in a losing cause.
GAME #3: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The cross-town rival Saints always guarantee a full house at Cobo Arena. The visitors led 2-1 after the opening period. But then the floodgates opened for the Stags as they reeled off the next 5 goals to win going away 6-3. Alan Bester got the win in goal for Michigan in a rare appearance. The result was especially satisfying as Michigan played with several regulars out of the lineup due to injury. Danny Gare and Ed Beers each scored a couple of goals for the home team.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A good week as the Michigan marksmen found their scoring touch and the Stags took 4 of 6 possible points. The team is hopeful of continued success with Mark Messier due to come off of the injured list soon.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game…
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT … and it goes as expected with Chicago winning 4-3.

Our defense and goaltending should NOT be this bad.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: We thought we were much improved. It’s disappointing, to say the least, that we have two solid goalies and a solid defense that is just not performing. Let’s see how we do on the road. Changes may be coming.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Couple of home games this week. Texas is sitting in 2nd place in the Smythe, but the record isn’t good and some wins are much needed.
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS First up is Hyannisport, currently last in the Norris. Zuke in the 1st and Laughlin in the 2nd stake HYA to a 2-0 lead before Pavelich answers late in the 2nd for a 2-1 HYA lead after 2. Andreychuk gets on the board early in the 3rd with a PP goal to tie things up. Both goalies lock it down from there and after a scoreless OT, we end it as a 2-2 tie.

3 Stars
1. Laughlin (HYA) – 1G, 1A
2. Andreychuk (TEX) – 1G
3. Pavelich (TEX) – 1G

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Next up is Dallas, first in the Norris and contending for tops in the league. Dallas gets on the board with a goal from Paiement for a 1-0 lead after 1. Sutter (TEX), Veitch (DAL), and McClelland (TEX) exchange goals in the 2nd for a 2-2 tie after 2. The teams battle through most of the 3rd scoreless, until the 19:21 mark when Dionne gets one past Herron for the game-winner for Dallas.

3 Stars (all DAL)
1. Dionne – 1G, 1A
2. Paiement – 1G
3. Veitch – 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Another disappointing homestand. Texas can’t seem to pick up the points needed to make a run at the division leader.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte moved out of the basement of the Patrick Division and into second place as the week began but was demoralized on the road this week, giving up late third-period leads in a pair of losses. The Dynamo were hoping to rebound at home as it hosted the top two teams in the Adams division, Mackinac Island and Saint Clair Shores, both with superior winning records: suffice to say there are no easy outs this year.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo started strong against the Adams-division-leading Moose (17-8-2 as the week began). Goals by Charlie Simmer, Glenn Anderson, Rick Vaive, and Lanny McDonald had lifted it to a 4-2 lead by the second intermission. But the Moose stampeded back: first Miroslav Frycer fed Dan Quinn an even-strength goal 3:07 into the third; then with 2:11 remaining in regulation, Frycer (funny I don’t recall that name through the 1980s decades worth of Buffalo Sabres season ticket packages) scored the game-tying goal himself on assists from Quinn and Paul MacLean.

That brought us to the five-minute OT where Rick Vaive essentially salvaged at least part of the week for Charlotte. With passes from Ulf Samuelsson (his first point ever as a rookie for the Dynamo) and Simmer, Vaive got a game-winning goal past Moose netminder Don Beaupre with 1:01 to play for the 5-4 win.

Three stars:
1. CHD Vaive 2 G
2. MIM Frycer 1 G, 3 Pts
3. CHD Glenn Anderson 1 G 2 Points

Notable: Mackinac Island’s other goals came from Paul MacLean and Butch Goring – the latter a penalty shot in the second that had tied the game 2-2 at the time following a Joel Quenneville Charlotte hooking penalty; Charlotte responded later in the second with the goals from Vaive and McDonald for the 4-2 lead entering the third.

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Speaking of Buffalo Sabres tickets in the 80s (albeit the nosebleed orange seats, but dang what a bargain that still was at $6 a pop, and the tickets for the Journey Escape concert at the Aud were just double that!), the Dynamo ran into a buzzsaw by the name of Tom Barrasso as it hosted Saint Clair Shores. The teenaged Barrasso delivered 32 saves to lead the Saints past Charlotte 4-1 in a game much closer than the final indicated.

Barasso was locked in a goalie duel with Andy Moog (19 saves) who only let up one goal through two periods (that from Ray Ferraro who scored unassisted 17:53 into the game). It remained at a standstill until 9:39 into the third, when Scott Stevens fired a shot from the point past Moog for a 2-0 Saints lead. Vaive responded on an even-strength goal to close the gap to 2-1 with 4:32 left in regulation but two empty net goals from Jamie Macoun and Bernie Federko salted the game away for the Saints who won, 4-1.

Three stars all from Saint Clair Shores:

1. Ferraro 1 G 2 Pts
2. Macoun 1 G 2 Pts
3. Barasso 32 saves

Notable: Charlotte in defeat outshot the Saints 33-23 but were stonewalled by Barrasso. Murray Craven assisted on both empty net goals for Saint Clair Shores.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: It’s been a rough 1-3 week for the Dynamo, which entered the week 12-10-2, and then settled for a split at home against two superb Adams division squads while blowing two late leads on the road for losses. Charlotte is back to square one with a 12-12-2 record. All four games Charlotte played this week were decided at the wire. There is nary a pushover to be found in the MWOTHL. All of us in this division are realizing it the hard way!
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game against Chicago
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Chicago gets the win 4-3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: One game one loss
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One Game at home against the Chiefs
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Charlestown Chiefs
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes come out firing and :35 seconds in Illka Sinisalo scores for the Drakes. Paul MacLean ties it up for the Chiefs on a great feed from Bernie Nicholls. The score stayed tied but at 1:24 into the second Al MacInnis blows a shot (surprise huh), by Glen Hanlon to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead…..the Chiefs continue to dominate as Bernie Nicholls scores his 13th of the season less than a minute later on a great play by Paul Coffey. Joey Mullen would cut it to 3-2 midway through the second but Paul MacLean scored again to put the Chiefs up 4-2 and it would stay that way heading into the third period. Brian Hayward would turn away shot after shot until Greg Paslawski would redirect a pass from Neal Broten to cut the score to 4-3……….and that would be all of the scoring as the Chiefs walk away with the win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 game, 1 loss
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland, Texas, and Ohio in town for some fun.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS.

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

Portland was on the board early with a goal from Hamel. Late matching goals by Zezel and Foligno make it 2-1 Portland at the break.

Portland with an early goal in the 2nd to make it 3-1. Moose match it late with a goal from Maruk. 3-2 Sasquatch.

No offense from the Moose, and Portland puts this away with a goal from Ellett and a late garbage goal from Gretzky.

Final – Portland 5, Moose 2

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS.

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

The only goal in the 1st is from MacLean just before the horn sounds. 1-0 Moose.

Good action in the 2nd as Kurri gets his 25th and puts the Moose up 2-0. Texas with the answer after halftime with goals by Sutter and McClelland. 2-2 at the break.

Texas takes the lead early on a powerplay, a goal from Tucker. Moose flounder most of the period and then Kurri takes over with 2 late goals for his hat-trick. Goring with a late empty netter. 5-3 Final in favor of the Moose.

GAME #3: OHIO LEGENDS VS.

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

Ohio was on the board early, Loob, and that’s all in the first, 1-0 Ohio.

Moose control the 2nd with 20 SOG and 2 find the back of the net, both from Kurri. 2-1 Moose at the break.

Kerr with a shortie is all the scoring in the 3rd. Tied 2-2 and off to overtime.

Kerr puts the cherry on top with one more, and the Legends leave with road W.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Moose struggling to score, and it shows with only 2 points in 3 home games. Time to mix it up.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game for Week 8
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Both teams enter this game with pretty similar records on the season. While the Presidents outshoot the Mountainners38 – 23 the home squad makes more of their shots count and wins comfortably 4 – 1.

1st – Millen
2nd – MacAdam
3rd – Ludwig

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Week 8. Andes wins its one home game this week 4 – 1 over the Presidents

Hyannisport Presidents
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Presidents and their league-worst defense look to right the ship
GAME #1:

PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Wayne Gretzky and the Sasquatch come to town for a back-and-forth affair. The game is at various points tied 1-1, 3-3, and 4-4 as the teams trade goals. The Presidents Mike Bullard scores his 16th goal of the season to put the Presidents ahead for good early in the 3rd. Phil Housley has a hat trick including a breakaway goal for the home team. POR 4 – HYP 6 (EN)
GAME #2:

NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Hyannisport takes a 2-0 lead late in the 1st period and Greg Stefan gives the Presidents a rare stellar goaltending performance turning aside 40 Ducks shots. Jonh Tonelli has 2 goals and Phil Housley adds another for the home team. FINAL SCORE NCD 2 – HYP 4
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Presidents play solid hockey to win a pair of games. Phil Housley nets 4 goals and leads all defensemen in the MWOTHL with 14 on the season.
