New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game for the Ducks this week as they try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. New Castle hosts the Michigan Stag. The Stag has taken 2 of 3 from the Ducks so far in this, their inaugural, season.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 5 MIC 4 Denis Potvin’s unassisted goal with 42 seconds remaining broke a 4-4 tie and the Ducks held on for the 5-4 win. It was Potvin’s second goal of the game. With the score tied 1-1 in the first period, the Ducks All-Star defenseman scored an unassisted SHORT-HANDED goal to make it 2-1 Ducks. Later – on the same power play – Ducks defenseman Brad McCrimmon also scored unassisted SHORT HANDED to give NCD a 3-1 lead. The craziness continued as late in the period, Steve Tambellini of MIC scored an unassisted SHORT-HANDED goal of his own to make it 3-2 Ducks after one.
NCD got the only score of the second period when Don Maloney beat MIC goalie Grant Fuhr.
New Castle took a 4-2 lead into the final frame but could not hold it as Bobby Carpenter scored twice, first at 8:56 and then at 15:56 with the latter score tying the game at 4-4.
That set the stage for Potvin’s dramatic game-winning goal.THERE STARS:
1. NCD – Denis Potvin 2G
2. MIC – Bobby Carpenter 2G
3. NCD – Don Maloney 1G 1 A 2 PTSDucks defenseman Mark Hardy had FIVE Blocked shots.NCD outshot MIC 32-24 but in the third period, MIC had a big 15-8 edge. After Potvin put the Ducks ahead with 1;42 left in regulation, MIC stormed the NCD end but John Vanbiesbrouck was up to the task as he evened his record to 10-10-2.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks win their only home game of the week
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A pair of home games for the up-and-down (mostly down) Michigan Stags
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Saints make the trip down Jefferson Avenue to downtown Detroit and an evenly played game ensues. In the end, the visitors prevailed 4-3, overcoming a 3-2 deficit on goals by Galley and Adams. John Ogrodnick, with no goals, and Doug Shedden with 1 each had 5 SCs for Michigan.
GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Another 4-3 contest but this time the Stags come out on top. Michigan nearly blows the game, at one point holding a 4-1 lead but manages to hang on for the two points.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A powerful offense is not the best defense in the case of the Michigan Stags.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one game on the Island this week, but it’s a big one with division Rival, the St. Claire Shore Saints. Each team has one win, tie, and loss in the series so far this year.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose gets the better of the Saints in the first, with a 16-7 shot advantage. Both goalies do their thing and the horn stays silent until the period ends. Off to the 2nd.

The Saints were a bit hampered in the 2nd with 3 minors to kill, but no problem. They score 2 goals, one a shorty. Lambert and Francis put the Saints up 2-0 as the Moose are showing signs of bad puck handling leading to multiple breakaways.

Moose claw to within one with a goal by MacLean, only to commit a penalty and see the Saints get the game to 3-1 on a PP goal by Murray. Moose crank up the offensive pressure on all lines, and it pays off with a goal by Quinn with 8 minutes to go. Moose then their own worst enemy with 2 minors in the next 6 minutes. Thankfully killing them off, finally had a chance to pull the goalie with just under 2 minutes to go. After a number of missed shots, a turnover sends the Saints down the ice toward an empty net only to see the Saints fumble the puck, leading to a breakaway the other way, and Propp tallies in a strange sequence to even the game. Never seen a breakaway in this situation before. Anyways, the score is tied 3-3 and off to overtime.

Moose dominate shots in OT, but nobody scores until a final last-gasp effort by the Moose finds Kurri in front of the crease and he scores with just 14 seconds on the clock to end a titanic division battle. Home fans were not cheated in this one.

1st star – Propp 1G 3pts
2nd – Kurri 1G 2pts
3rd – MacLean 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Moose is happy to get this one home game after falling behind 3-1 and then committing stupid penalties down the wire. Barrasso was tough for 50 minutes.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games as Texas tries to stay in the playoff race
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Silanen and Sutter exchange goals in the 1st for a 1-1 tie after 1. Ellett and Gretzky both score on the PP for Portland before Pavelich gets on back and it is 3-2 Portland after 2. Pavelich gets another for the tie before Ciccarelli and Gretzky put it away for Portland.

3 Stars

1. Gretzky (POR) – 2G, 2A
2. Pavelich (TEX) – 2G, 1A
3. Ciccarelli (POR) – 1G, 2A

GAME #2: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Next up is Andes. Naslund gets Andes up early before Andreychuk gets the equalizer after 1. McClelland gets Texas lead before Muller ties it up again after 2. Smyl scores early in the 3rd and Andes clamp down on defense to take a 3-2 win.

3 Stars (all AND)

1. Smyl – 1G, 1A
2. Naslund – 1G, 1A
3. Jensen 36 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two must-win games against division opponents and Texas disappoints, again.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers with 1 home game against Pittsburgh – go Rangers!!!
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Rangers and Pittsburgh play a spirited 1st – Rangers drawing 1st blood with a Suave goal 4 1/2 minutes in, but the Spirit responds twice with a Goulet PP goal halfway through the period and then Larouche getting one of those crowd silencers with 14 seconds left in the period. Pittsburgh smiles as it skates into the 1st intermission ahead 2-1!

In just less than 7 minutes of the 2nd Pittsburgh moves ahead 3-1 when Goulet puts it between the pipes – his 2nd of the game. But the Rangers cut it to 3-2 when McNab gets the PP goal just past midway in the 2nd, but that’s all the 2nd-period scoring and Pittsburgh ends the 2nd period still up by 1, 3-2!

But the game has 3 periods and 35 seconds into the 3rd McNab scores his 2nd goal and the game is tied. Then Arniel puts CapJack in the lead 7 1/2 in and Trottier adds some insurance with 8 minutes to go. And after that – no one else scores and CapJack comes back for the 5-3 win!

STARS
1. CAP – McNab 2 goals, 1 assist
2. PIT – Goulet 2 goals
3. CAP – Suave 1 goal, 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 home game, 1 win, and we’re happy as the surprise continues. Interesting Stat:
Chico Resch, 17 games, 11 wins, 6 losses. GAA 4.60 and SV % .854!!!

In the 3rd period, Federko scores, then Vaive scores, and the Dynamo maintain their 1-goal lead. With 1:09 left in the period, Scott Stevens ties it for SCS. In OT, Ray Ferraro scores the game-winner.

SCS 4 Charlotte 3 (OT)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two wins to start the new year in style.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT The Spirit dominate and win 6-1. Mark Howe with the lone 3rd-period goal for Kamsack to break the shutout for Wamsley.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: This is more like what we had hoped for this season… And we sat a few players including Goulet!

Let’s see how we do in two games on the road.

Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes hosts Charlestown this week.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS A back and forth affair where each team would lead at some point. The game goes to OT where neither team can get one in the goal. Fair results for two teams playing a good game.

1st Star – Krushelnyski
2nd Star – Flatley
3rd Star – Naslund

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes ties in its only home game. But more importantly, I found out this holiday season that Ralphie’s mom from “A Christmas Story” was in Slap Shot and she was in a very rememberable scene. I can’t watch either now without not thinking about this.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: There’s a lot to like about this Dynamo team, which has gathered itself to vault to second place in the Patrick Division at 18-15-2 and vie for a second straight MWOTHL playoff appearance. Whether it can make a push for its first Patrick division regular season title, however, remains to be seen as CapJack leads the division comfortably by 12 points, a similar scenario to last year when it outdistanced second-place Charlotte by 13 points for the regular season crown. A pivotal contest against the Rangers at home this week will go a long way toward deciding whether Charlotte can make this a race. The Dynamo’s other home contest this week is against a Pittsburgh squad much better than its record indicates, and also very alive for the playoffs with 33 points entering the week. Big games to start the new year!
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In this first Patrick Division matchup in Charlotte, the Dynamo hosted the retooling Pittsburgh Spirit, which entered the new year with a 16-19-1 record – but the expectation is this team will certainly be a force to be reckoned with as the season continues in this new year (the first line and defensive pairings are just too good!). As the week began, Pittsburgh was in contention with Kamsack and Texas for the final playoff spot.

The Spirit caused fits for the Dynamo throughout the first half of the contest as the teams were tied 1-1. A first-period Dave Poulin Charlotte goal was answered 20 seconds into the second period when the great Michel Goulet (drafted by the Spirit atop the draft this summer) found the net for Pittsburgh to surprise Andy Moog following the opening faceoff.

The rest of the period was dominated by Charlotte however with goals coming in the latter half from first-liners Glenn Anderson and Laurie Boschman to put the Dynamo ahead, 3-1, entering the third.

Rick Vaive scored Charlotte’s fourth even-strength goal 4:28 into the third period on assists from Poulin and Charlie Simmer to provide the Dynamo with a comfortable three-goal cushion. The Spirit was not through, however, and second-line center Pierre Larouche gave Pittsburgh life with an even-strength goal with 11 minutes left in regulation, narrowing its deficit to 4-2.

Pittsburgh outshot Charlotte 13-6 in the final period but could not come closer after Larouche’s goal and an empty netter by Charlotte’s Tom Fergus with 35 seconds left in regulation sealed the deal, as the hosts prevailed 5-2.

Three stars (from Charlotte):
1. Vaive 1 G, 2 Pts
2. Poulin 1 G, 2 Pts
3. Anderson 1 G

Notable: Boschman was credited with the game-winning goal as it put Charlotte ahead to stay. Moog had 33 saves (.943 percentage); Pittsburgh outshot Charlotte 35-33 so the solid performance in net was needed. Neither team scored on the power play (Pittsburgh 0 for 3, Charlotte 0 for 2).

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Dynamo impressively win a pair of division games at home against two teams with championship pedigrees to kick off the new year (though Charlotte blew a late lead on the road versus Saint Clair Shores and falls in overtime for zero points there). After a notoriously slow start, the team is gaining its mojo and the ship seems stable as it prepares for the 1985 part of the schedule.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome the two Adams Division opponents ahead of them in the standings this week.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. OHIO LEGENDS Mackinac Island 4, Ohio 1

Miroslav Frycer scores twice for the Moose.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: There is a reason Ohio is the third-place team in the Adams. They showed it this week.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rival New Castle Comes to town
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Excellent back and forth game that ends in a sister-kisser. Ducks get goals from Middleton, Johnson, and Potvin, Drakes from John Anderson, Peplinski, and Reid.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 game, 1 tie
Hyannisport Presidents
GAME #1:

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Hyannisport takes an early 1-0 lead but it goes downhill from there. Mackinac Island scores 4 straight including a hat trick from Dan Quinn. The visitor’s cruise to a 5-2 win with Hyannisport only managing 13 total shots on goal. FINAL SCORE MAC 5 – HYP 2
GAME #2:

CHICAGO UNDERGROUND

VS.

HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS

Both teams score on their first shot and the visitors scored their 2nd three shots later. But Hyannisport goalie Ken Wregget eventually settles in and shuts out Chicago in the 3rd period. Wregget makes 9 saves in the final frame and the home team scores 3 times in the last 10 minutes en route to a 6-4 win. FINAL SCORE CHI 4 – HYP 6
GAME #3: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS New Castle visits Hyannisport and the teams play a scoreless 1st before the visitors build a 3-0 lead. The Presidents mount a fierce rally in the final 90 eventually forcing New Castle’s Billy Smith to make multiple vital saves to preserve a 3-2 win for the Ducks. FINAL SCORE NCD 3 – HYP 2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Hyannisport continues to play shoddy defense and get subpar goaltending with a league-worst .848 save percentage.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: In a battle to stay out of last place in the Pacific Division Andes visits Portland in the Sasquatch only home game of the week
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH After a 1-1 first period behind goals from the Mountaineers Murphy (7) and Portland’s Carbonneau (13) the Sasquatch explode for 3 goals in the second period behind Foligno (16/17) and Carbonneau (14) after Picard (6) ave Andes a 2-1 lead early in the period. Portland’s Cavallini (2) adds a late empty-netter to give Portland the 5-2 win
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland wins their lone game of the week
