NEW CASTLE DUCKS<\/span><\/th>\n | These two bitter rivals have met in the playoffs the last two seasons. Last year, the Ducks beat the Moose in six games to advance to the Finals. Will the Moose get revenge?
\nthe Moose start fast scoring two first-period goals while outshooting NCD 17-8 in the period. Dan Quinn got his first and Jarri Kurri his 5th to make it 2-0 after one.
\nIn the second, Quinn scored again and the Moose led 3-0 as they dominated play. Don Beaupre was stopping everything and the Moose were holding the Duck’s high-powered offense to very few shots. then came the turning point of the game… at 18:28 of the second period Rick Middleton, from Pederson and Snepts, scored (5) to make it 3-1. And suddenly the crowd was into it and MO-mentum had shifted.
\nThe Ducks come out flying in the third and at 11:33 it paid off when Andre Savard deflected in a shot by Ryan Walter. 3-2 Moose with under 9 minutes to go. It’s a close-checking contest the rest of the way. MIM continues to storm the Ducks zone but Billy Smith is hot now in goal. And then with 3:34 left Barry Pederson puts the puck past Beaupre and the Ducks have tied it at 3-3. The tension is high at the Duck Pond as OT looms. But then with 56 seconds left on the clock, Lanny McDonald does it again – he scores (6) from Potvin and Snepts for his third game-winning goal of the young season (tied with Gretzky for most GWG). Incredibly, the Ducks have come all the way back to take the lead. Six seconds later an empty-net goal by Potvin seals the 5-3 victory. It was a very tough loss for the Moose but they look forward to seeing the Ducks again at Bullwinkle Arena.THREE STARS:

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO<\/span><\/th>\n | Charlotte, sparked by two goals from Charlie Simmer, grabbed a first-period 3-1 lead and won just its second contest of the year, a 5-2 win. The first-period goal by Andes’ Doug Gilmour narrowed an early deficit to 2-1, prior to two unanswered goals by Simmer that put Charlotte ahead 4-1. Jim Fox made it close in the third on a goal from an assist from Neal Broten, but an empty netter from Charlotte’s Glenn Anderson with 13 seconds left ended any doubt.<\/p>\n Three stars all from Charlotte:

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO<\/span><\/th>\n | Simmer again shined for Charlotte with yet another team-leading two-goal performance as the Dynamo won this time 5-3. Following a 1-1 tie at the first intermission, Charlotte outscored the Chiefs 2-1 in both the second and third periods. Simmer notched a second-period power-play goal and added an even-strength goal on an Anderson assist 2:50 into the third, the latter goal closing the scoring. Charlotte goalie Alan Bester stopped the Chiefs the rest of the way and outplayed Dan Bouchard (30 saves to 20).<\/p>\n Three stars (all Charlotte)

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO<\/span><\/th>\n | Against the Legends, Charlotte needed a hat-trick from Hawerchuk followed by a Simmer-saving goal with a mere 20 ticks left on the clock to salvage a 5-5 tie. Ohio’s balanced attack (five different players recorded goals) grabbed a 5-3 early third-period lead as Hall of Famers Bob Gainey and Steve Yzerman (talk about legends!) each found the net. But two desperation goals in the final two minutes of the third from Hawerchuk and Simmer rallied the Dynamo and allowed them to clinch at least a point.<\/p>\n Three stars (all Charlotte):

ANDES MOUNTAINEERS<\/span><\/th>\n | The Mountaineers welcome Adams leading St Clair for their Week 3 matchup. The Saints come out like gangbusters in the opening period and pepper the Mountaineer goal. They are rewarded when Mark Taylor scores with 1:18 left in the period to put the visitors up 1 – 0. This seems to wake up the Mountaineers who storm back to take a 2 – 1 lead behind Goulet and Gilmour. The 3rd period starts off well for Saints as they tie it up only 29 seconds in when Gustafsson puts it past Sauve. Both teams go back and forth and we’re headed for a tie. But it’s not meant to go the Mountaineers way and with 1:37 left in the period, Bridgman breaks the hearts of the Mountaineer faithful.<\/p>\n 1st Star – Gustaffson

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE<\/span><\/th>\n | Moose 4, Drakes 3 – Drakes must have eaten a little too much fudge, or maybe it was the $500 beer bill, but they only manage 4 SOG in the first period. The Moose control play and it shows on the scoreboard with 2 goals from Kurri. Langway and MacLean in a little scuffle. Both teams killed off one penalty. 2-0 at intermission.<\/p>\n Maybe a good bathroom break has invigorated the visitors, they come out roaring on the powerplay, and Dionne scores just 42 seconds into the 2nd period. The sleepy crowd wakes up and we have a game. Dallas then kills their own momentum with back-to-back minors but kills both off. Tension escalated until we have a really good fight just past the midway mark, Even the goalies getting into it. O’Reilly and Baron for Dallas, Melanson, and Rogers for the Moose. penalty boxes looking like they should. Veitch gets called for tripping just as play reconvenes. The Moose take advantage of the 5 on 4 and Beers pushes the lead back to 2, 3-1. A couple of minutes later it’s Lysiak on a lucky rebound shot, making it 4-1 Moose, and the fans get an early start on 2nd intermission beers.<\/p>\n 3rd period sees the Drakes start hot again, Sundstrom with a very quick goal to make it interesting at 4-2. Dallas tilts the ice a little in their favor with more shots, but Melanson is up to task through the period, making the 2 point lead stand until late when Dallas pulls their goalie. Mullen scores with 75 seconds remaining and the crowd urges the Moose to stand tall. Faceoff followed by the Drakes getting the puck into the zone. Then a really entertaining fight between Holmgren and MacLean which earns both 5 minutes off, plus a bonus of 10 minutes for Holmgren. After that, the first 2 periods are all Moose. A hat-trick by Quinn, and goals by Kurri, Lysiak, and Maruk put a 6 on the board for the home team. Bossy adds one for the visitors. It’s 6-2 after 2.<\/p>\n Chicago makes it interesting with goals by Bossy and Chabot to put the winner in question just 8 minutes into the 3rd period. The defense steps up, and in spite of 17 SOG by Chicago in the period, the Moose keep the lamp cold the rest of the way and cling to the 6-4 win.<\/p>\n 1st star Quinn – hat trick

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE<\/span><\/th>\n | Moose 5, Spirit 1 – A fairly even 1st period sees the Moose take the early lead for once, with a goal by Quinn. Maxwell and Price with a little skirmish midway in the period. Then Both teams kill off a minor. The visitors even the game at 1 with a goal by Larmer. Off to intermission tied at 1.<\/p>\n The Moose crank up the defense and hold the Spirit to only 11 SOG in the final 2 periods. In the meantime, the Moose rattle off 26 shots, with 4 finding their way into the netting. Bothwell, Quinn, and MacLean twice. The lead building as the clock winds down. Beer sales are good.
