MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE<\/span><\/th>\n | O’Connell says hello to the Rangers with a little stick action and gets an early hooking call. It’s all the Rangers PP unit can do just to get the puck in the zone and no damage is done. Minutes later it’s Russell and Giles mixing it up, and we get 2 minutes of 4 on 4, but no damage once again. The Moose get a man advantage later in the 1st, thanks to a trip by Russell, but once again the PP unit struggles just to get a shot off, and we are still at 0-0. A vicious slash by Beck late in the period earns him a big 5 in the time-out box, and the Moose make that one pay off. First Lysiak from close in makes it 1-0, and then its intermission time. <\/p>\n With Beck still in the box, we start the 2nd, and the Moose are able to quickly move the puck into position, and Kurri gets back on the horse, metaphorically, Since horses can’t skate, you know, and Beck is feeling not so great as he comes out of the box with his team down 2-0. Not that he changed his ways, because just minutes later he gets called for tripping, and 2 more minutes in the box. This time the Rangers kill it off. Finally, the Rangers get on the board with a blast from the blue line from DeBlois just before halftime. Price then with a trip puts the Rangers in a position to tie it up, but the Moose PK unit says, “no goals for you”. and we continue on 2-1 Moose. Gillis and MacLean decide to resolve old differences in their last meeting of the regular season with a full, drop the glove, and let it all go event. Judges call it a draw. Now a fully revved-up crowd is pumped and very happy when the dust settles, only to see Propp score on a breakaway, and then right off the ensuing faceoff, Cote rushes in with scores just 18 seconds later. Bedlam in the Arena as the score is now 4-1 Moose. Chants of “Sieve” rain down on poor old Resch. Crowder and Bothwell in a minor skirmish just before the break, and it’s a 3 goal lead for the home team. Beers sales are very good tonite. Russell goes out in the 2nd with an injury.<\/p>\n 3rd period sees the Moose open the door 3 times with stupid penalties. Price gets his season total up to 155 tonight. But Melanson is up to task behind the PK unit all period and he slams the door on any and all Ranger attempts, 15 SOG in all. In what could be a preview of a Stanley Cup round, the Moose start #1 goalie Roland Melanson in this one. Then again, the Moose’s superstar forward Jarri Kurri is sitting this one out as the Moose rest up for the playoffs<\/p>\n The Moose take a 2-0 first-period lead on goals y Tom Lysiak (27) and Paul MacLean (51). After Tony Currie (20) makes it 2-1 in the second period, the Moose go up 3-1 in the third on Dan Quinn’s 35th of the year. Rick Middleton makes it 3-2 with his 61st goal but Terry Ruskowski puts what looks like the nail in the coffin when he beats Billy Smith at 14:52 to make it 4-2 Moose. Then BOOM BOOM BOOM. First, Lanny McDonald scores on a 2 on 1 to make it 4-3 with 2:02 to go. Smith is pulled from the net and the Ducks pressure Melanson – and it pays off when Denis Potvin SCORES with 22 seconds to go, to tie the game at 4-4!<\/p>\n In the first minute of OT on the first shot of the OT session, New Castle’s Barry Pederson (36) lights the lamp as the Ducks come away with a spectacular 5-4 comeback victory<\/p>\n THREE STARS:

NEW CASTLE DUCKS<\/span><\/th>\n | The game was scoreless for more than 33 minutes until Rick Middleton scored at 13:07 of the second period on a wrap-around. The star RW’s 62nd of the year made it 1-0 Ducks. Texas tied it a little more than four minutes later on Darcy Rota’s 33rd of the year. The teams went to the locker room tied 1-1 after two.<\/p>\n In the third, Rota went off for interference and the Ducks capitalized as Dennis Potvin scored, his 26th of a sensational season. 2-1 Ducks. Andre Savard added an insurance goal at 7:15 and an empty netter by Middleton (63) made the final 4-1.<\/p>\n Ducks had the 34-26 advantage in SOG. Murray Bannerman made 30 saves for Texas. So the Duck’s first-ever Norris Division title looks all but certain.<\/p>\n The #1 line of McDonald-Pederson-Middleton continues to dominate as they have now combined for 134 goals in 78 games. Middleton is fifth in the league in goals with 63. Pederson is third in scoring with 123 points and leads the league with 87 assists. It entered the week 35-36-5 and was attempting a strong regular-season finish to enter the playoffs on a high note, while also trying to avert an ignominious losing regular season.<\/p>\n In its lone home game this week, the Dynamo hosted a Dallas Drakes team with the upper hand in the chase for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Clarence Campbell Conference.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n| GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO<\/span><\/th>\n | Charlotte shrugged off two goals by the Drakes\u2019 Patrik Sundstrom in the first four minutes and an early 3-0 deficit to rally to a 7-4 victory.<\/p>\n Down 4-2, Charlotte closed the game with five unanswered goals, all from different players. Third-line right-winger Bob Crawford started the rally with an unassisted tally with 3:28 left in the second period and the deluge continued from there. The Dynamo ultimately knocked out Drakes goalie Marco Baron with 10 minutes left, after a Joel Quenneville Charlotte goal from the point put Charlotte ahead 6-4. Another Dynamo defenseman, Tom Laidlaw. added a late empty netter.<\/p>\n With Crawford\u2019s goal, the Dynamo achieved quite an impressive end-of-season milestone. It assured that the team had eight different forwards among its four lines who have scored 20 goals or more. Talk about firepower!<\/p>\n Ron Duguay, like Sundstrom, also had two goals for Dallas.<\/p>\n Dynamo goalie Allan Bester recovered from Sundstrom\u2019s two early goals and saved 25 shots in improving to 17-12-1. He essentially has been the Dynamo savior this season after the other two Charlotte netminders by committee Andy Moog and Doug Keans (a combined 19-25-4) have largely faltered.<\/p>\n Three stars:
