Last year, the Ducks lost in the Conference Finals. This year’s Ducks are a very different team. Gone are veteran stars such as Lanny McDonald, Ryan Walter, Bobby Clarke, and Andre Savard. The “new look” Ducks still have Rick Middleton, who last season scored 63 goals and 114 points! Instead of his old linemates, Middleton will be joined by #3 pick Mark Napier and #5 pick Mark Johnson. Much of the Duck’s defense has remained the same as veterans Denis Potvin, Brad McCrimmon, and Mark Hardy all return. Also returning is Goalie “Battlin'” Billy Smith. The 84-85 Ducks may not have a lot of offensive punch but they have good depth in role players and what should shape up as an excellent defense, including #2 pick Goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.
The Ducks open the season with three home games this week, two against Division rivals (Dallas and Chicago) and one against the always-tough Pittsburgh Spirit.
Let the season begin!

GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS

These long-time rivals face off at the Duck Pond and it’s a typical New Castle-Dallas game The Drakes strike first as Ila Sinisalo beats Billy Smith at 2:56 of the first period. Dallas gets the only goal of the second period as Sinisalo scores his second, this time on a power play. 2-1 Dallas after two. In the third, the Ducks tie it at 12:02 as their new #1 line comes through again. This time it’s Mark Johnson scoring, assisted by Potvin and Middleton to tie it at 2-2. A little skirmish between Carlyle and MacLean 5 minutes in. Minors by Price and Kerr give each team one session on the PP, but it’s the PK units who shine. The period ends scoreless.

2nd period – Anxious fans accustomed to last year’s high score getting a bit uneasy. It’s Ohio who breaks the scoreless tie 6 minutes in when Preston sneaks one past Beaupre. With 7 minutes to go, a Bothwell minor gives Ohio another good chance, but the Moose PK unit stands tall again. A couple of minutes later, it’s the Moose getting on the board with a shot close in from Zezel, new to the team this year. Just after the faceoff, a penalty by Roberts gives the Moose a chance to double up, but the Legends are up to the task and hold the game to a 1-1 tie, and the period ends.

3rd period – Ohio keeps making mental mistakes. Penalties through the period with minors by Lidster, Nill, and MacLellan. But the Moose PP unit looks inept and cannot convert on any of them. Finally, with 3 minutes to go, MacLean gets another tally for the 2nd line with help from Zezel and Frycer. Up 2-1, the Moose try and milk the clock. When the Legends finally get control of the puck, they pull the goalie and go balls out for the equalizer. After a series of shots on goal, the Moose get control and manage to manipulate the puck down ice where Kurri adds the insurance empty-netter to seal the deal.

Final Score 3-1 Moose

1st star – Zezel 1G 2pts
2nd – MacLean 1G 2pts
3rd Beaupre 30 saves

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

Stags 3, Moose 2 – Just 32 seconds in Quinn fires a blast that catches Janecyk sleeping, and it’s 1-0 Moose. 7 minutes in a Marois minor gives the Stags a PP chance, but the Moose kill it off and we move on. McPhee with a minor at the 13-minute mark puts the Moose in the hole again, and this time the Stags take advantage with a goal from Carpenter. Still, in a generous mood, Bothwell with another penalty, and the Stags get one more chance. Moose kill this one off to keep the game tied. Just before the period ends, Beers and Gilbert are in a little skirmish and we finish the period tied 1-1.

2nd period – Stags put the Moose on the PP with a Shedden minor, but the Moose cannot convert. One more home game, this time against the Presidents.

Like the classic “30,000 lbs. of Bananas” by Harry Chapin, this game starts slow and then tumbles downhill to a flaming thundering conclusion.

1st period sees the Moose control the puck with a 17-3 SOG advantage. Minors by Lanz, Ludzik, and Turnbull give the home team 3 PP opportunities and they cash in on the last one, Propp, with 4 minutes left in the period to make it 1-0. No more scoring as the period ends with the Moose up 1.

The Presidents clean up their play in the 2nd and stay out of PK situations. Meanwhile, the Moose juggle their lines to get Quinn some rest, and the move pays off as Maruk, moved to the 1st line, assists for Propp’s 2nd goal of the game with 5 minutes to go. Quickly followed by a rare 4th line goal from Seiling with 3 minutes left, and the period melts away to intermission, only interrupted by a fine fight between Housley and McPhee, and the Moose now up 3-0.

The slow ride downhill stays in control until Pichette finds the back of the net to cut the lead to 2 with 12 minutes to go. One minute later a minor by Engblom puts the Moose on the PK, and Pichette scores again, just as the penalty expires, making it now just a one-goal difference. The Presidents hurt themselves with a minor by Lanz, and just one minute later it’s Kurri cashing in to make it 4-2, now with 6 minutes to go. Things stay in control until the brake lines blow apart as the clock passes 2 minutes too. First MacLean scores close in to put the Moose up 5-2, then its a flaming wreck of Bananas Foster as the Presidents pull the goalie and get goals by Housley, Babych, and Hunter, all in 44 seconds, to tie it at 5. As the crews come in to clean up the mess, the clock expires and we go to OVERTIME.

The Presidents control play early and get 3 shots on goal. In the three fights in the line brawl, Steve Shutt (Mic) and Tim Kerr (Ohio) were both given game misconducts.

In the second period, things calmed down and Eddy Beers (15;23) and Paul Fenton (16:55) netted the last two goals of the game to give Michigan the win.

While all hell broke loose in the first, a coincidental minor in the middle frame was the only blemish on the scoresheet the rest of the way.

Bob Janecyk turned away 36 shots to pick up his first win of the season and Pat Riggin stopped 20 in the losing effort. As Charlotte took to the ice in front of the Bojangles Arena faithful, it did so with arguably the most curious pick of the past draft in its net. In the second round, the Dynamo, in desperate win-now mode and seeking to solidify its goaltending, reached (some would say wildly) the second round and drafted one-hit wonder Warren Skorodenski, who led the NHL in save percentage in 27 games as a Blackhawks backup to Murray Bannerman – only to never be heard from again after that one brief shining season. The Dynamo wished to lock up Skorodenski, if only as a one-season rental, to complement Moog and provide a dynamic 1-2 goaltending duo.

Charlotte coaches held their breath as Skorodenski took the ice for the first time this season — and after 37 opening seconds on its ice, it seemed like the Dynamo’s grand plans were backfiring as it trailed 1-0. Anton Stastny got things started for Kamsack and struck early in that opening minute off assists from Hall of Famers Mike Gartner and Gilbert Perreault.

But then, Skorodenski justified the Dynamo’s decision to draft him so high. He proceeded to deliver a flawless performance after that wakeup call, finishing with 37 saves, and the Dynamo skaters supported him with four goals, including three individual tallies from its frontline of Anderson, Laurie Boschman, and Hawerchuk for a 4-1 win.

Anderson tied the game seven minutes following Stastny’s goal, and Boschman scored what proved to be the game-winner two minutes into the second. Charlotte defenseman Randy Moller added an insurance goal in the opening minute of the third, followed by a Hawerchuk goal four minutes later that put the game on ice. All goals in the contest were even-handed.

Charlotte only mustered 21 shots compared to Kamsack’s 38 but made them count. Pete Peeters took the loss for Kamsack. The Dynamo prevailed despite sitting Charlie Simmer (30 real goals) to take care of usage right off the bat as a new hockey season kicks off.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1.
