Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlestown Chiefs Old tyme hockey! A 6-6 barnburner, with BRO scoring FOUR goals in the 3rd (including a PP marker at 19:12) to knot the game up. Rumor has it that Charlestown goalie Riggin hit the bottle between periods and couldn’t stop the puck in the middle.

Weekly Summary: With 67 games in the books, the Chiefs sit at 19-34-14 for 52 points. Only Chicago has given up more than our 269 goals. Not even Ray Bourque can save this sorry excuse of a defense.

Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: Saskatoon faces a couple of guys named Niespodzianksi as the Cyclone host Charlestown and Pittsburgh for some laughs and drinks.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Saskatoon Cyclone The Chiefs come out firing on all cylinders and by the midway mark of the first period goals by Anders Kallur (17) and Thomas Gradin (19) had the home town fans pretty quiet.
At the 12:54 mark, Dave Maloney (15) snapped in a loose puck from quite a ways out that fooled Pat Riggin and gave the Cyclone some life.
Then the Pat Hughes powerplay show began as he found himself on a line with Brent Ashton and Wayne Gretzky as a result of Marc Tardif and Dave Taylor running on fumes. No matter as Hughes showed rifling his 4th of the year past Riggin with 2-1/2 minutes left in the 1st period.
The 2nd period featured a nifty display of harmless outside shooting … and a fair bit of it as Charlestown outshot Saskatoon 12-7, but it was Pat Hughes just after a power play ended that found himself all alone in front of Riggin and made no mistake tapping it past him to give Saskatoon a 3-2 lead.
Ah well … all good things must come to an end and it was none other than the muchly hated horror from my younger days that came through for the Chiefs – that spectre known as Ray Bourque – who continued to haunt me by firing a slapper from the point past Bill McKenzie to tie it up with just over five minutes left in the game. It was Bourque’s 11th of the season.
The teams tried hard to break the tie (shots in the period were 15-13 in favor of the Cyclone) but nothing else was getting past Riggin and McKenzie on this night and that’s how it ended.
STARS:
1. SASK, Pat Hughes (2 goals)
2. CHA, Ray Bourque (1 Goal, 2 assists)
3. SASK, Wayne Gretzky (2 assists)
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Saskatoon Cyclone This game … well sucked.
Those a-holes in the striped pajamas did their best to keep Saskatoon out of the game as they gave the Pittsburgh Spirit seven power plays in the game and the Saskatoon Cyclone … let me check my notes … frigging none.
At the end of the day, the Spirit only did manage to get one past Rogie Vachon on the man advantage but it was a key one as it gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead at the time.
The Spirit’s Guy Chouinard (23) opened the scoring on the first shot of the game at 2:43 of the 1st period when his shot from the slot went through a crowd that included Saskatoon netminder Vachon to make it 1-0.
At 6:56 of the 1st on the power play, Chouinard blasted a shot that was only barely stopped by Vachon but he was unable to control it. As the puck bounced at his skates, Anders Hedberg was there to tap it past him and into the net for a 2-0 Pittsburgh lead.
With the Saskatoon team on its heels that kid named Gretzky took it upon himself to lead a rush up ice and although he didn’t factor into the stats on the play he helped make possible a rare Rick Green (2) goal that sent the teams to the dressing room with the Spirit up 2-1.
On a complete defensive breakdown by the Cyclone alleged checking line, Dan Maloney was able to scoop up a nice pass from Tkaczuk and made no mistake beating Vachon top shelf to make it 3-1 early in the 2nd period. It was Maloney’s 7th of the year.
The 3rd period was dominated by the Cyclone who fired a lot of shots Glenn Resch’s way and some even made it to him, but he stoned them time after time. Then with two minutes to go, Vachon raced to the bench sending Rick Vaive scuttling onto the ice to join Gretzky and Company.
It was nice to have Vaive out there, but it was the Great One, of course, that made the magic thanks to a nice pass from the corner by Dave Taylor with Gretzky firing a wrist shot through the pads of Resch to make it 3-2.
And then … that was it. Gretzky’s 47th of the year was too little too late as only 9.9 seconds were left on the clock.
Congrats to the Spirit for a gritty 3-2 win.
STARS:
1.PIT, Chouinard (1 G, 1 A)
2.PIT, Resch (31 saves)
3.PIT, Hedberg (1 G)
Weekly Summary: The Cyclone manage one measly point at home this week … in the words of David Byrne and the Talking Heads … “Same as it ever was, same as it ever was … “

CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers fighting hard to stay in touch with the Pittsburgh Spirit – who have been on a tear lately that is so big you could drive a truck through it. After a 4-2 win on the road at Charlestown, the Rangers come home for 3 straight. AND Game 1 is against the Spirit, what a way to start and hopefully gain some ground. Then they play Gretsky and Saskatoon and finish up with Brooklyn – who starts the week with more wins that the Rangers (but way more losses). Tough week, but it’s crunch time.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers UGH – 7 minutes into the game and it’s 3-0 Pittsburgh. 2 even strength goals by Labraaten (21, 22) inside 5 minutes and then a shorthanded tally by Lafleur (24- unassisted).
2nd PERIOD – Robinson gets goal #10 11 seconds into the period to spark life back into the crowd. Shutt (49) then cuts the score to 3-2 5 minutes later. Woohoo – it’s a game! ONE MINUTE – that’s 62 seconds – LATER – MacLeish (32) stretches the lead back to 2 goals. But then, the Rangers score the next 3 goals to take a 5-4 lead. Shutt gets #50, Cloutier 15 to close out a 4 goal second period. Gare, 53, gets the go ahead goal just under the 6 minute mark of the 3rd. Then Bouchard and the defense hold off the Spirited attack the rest of the way including 1+ minutes of extra attacker. Whew! BIG WIN!
STARS:
1. CAP – Shutt – 2 goals
2. PIT – Labraaten 2 goals
3. CAP – Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist
Saskatoon Cyclone @ CapJack Rangers After the BIG win over Pittsburgh, can the Rangers maintain their momentum? In a word – YES! Esposito scores his 20th on a PP in the 1st. Then Cloutier (16) and Trottier (42) add 2 in the 2nd and it’s 3-0 going into the finale. DeBlois gets a rare goal (6) in the 3rd and it’s 4-0. Shutout pending? NOPE – Gretzky (47) spoils that with 1:24 to play making the final 4-1 Rangers!
STARS (all CAP)
1. Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist (2nd straight game)
2. Bouchard 28 saves
3. Esposito 1 goal
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers Now flying real high, the Ranges host the Rats. The visitors score 1st when Martin beats Smith for his 31st of the year. But then CapJack gets 2 goals in a 16 second span and a 3rd in 1:32 later and a 4th goal 3 minutes later. So in a 4 minute 42 second span the score goes from 1-0 Brooklyn to 4-1 CapJack. Rangers then score inside of 4 minutes in the 2nd and take the big 5-1 lead. Gare (54), Robinson (11), Esposito (21), Cloutier and Deblois (7) are the goal getters.
BIG ENOUGH LEAD?? YUP – but barely. Talafous (3) gets a PP goal and Hickey (32) score late in the 2nd and it’s 5-3 going to period 3.
Hicks (6) then scores midway into 3 – and the Rats keep trying with 1:15 of extra skater but Smith hangs in there for the win, his 2nd game in a row.
STARS
1. CAP Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist (getting to be a nice and familiar report)
2. CAP – Robinson 1 goal, 1 assist
3. BRO – Hickey 1 goal, 1 assist
Weekly Summary: Rangers management couldn’t have asked for a better week from their players – 1 road win and 3 home games including a big win over Pittsburgh. The season is winding down – player usage may be a factor in the final week, fortunately the Rangers are all rested and set for the final drive.

Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: Pittsburgh has been on fire at the right time. Can we continue the torrid pace? Silk City and San Diego hope to come into the Graveyard and exorcise the Spirit.
Silk City Whales @ Pittsburgh Spirit Silk City comes into the Burgh to try to stop the Spirit train from rolling.

1st period – Chouinard (23) makes it a 1-0 game 4:26 in. But Plett (11) gets it back at 9:10 to tie it up 1-1. With 1:15 left, Chouinard (24) strikes again to put the Spirit up 2-1 going into the 2nd.

2nd period – Lafleur (24) scores in a breakaway to make if 3-1 good guys on the only goal in the period.

3rd period – Lindgren (3) scores a rare goal to bring Silk City within 1, but with 29 seconds left, Redmond sneaks a shot through traffic into an empty net for his 11th of the season to seal the Spirit victory.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: one home game for the fast fading Harbor Rats this week, hosting Smythe division leading Vermont
Vermont Foresters @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats A tie game entering the final period has things looking up for the Rats, and Jere Gillis even gives a 3-2 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining. But the Foresters are not a first place team for no reason, and they score four unanswered goals to take a 6-3 road win at Brooklyn.
Weekly Summary: Rats have now dropped 8 of their last 10 to remove themselves from post season contention

Syracuse Bulldogs
Weekly Preview: The Syracuse Bulldogs try not to let the Norris slip away
Chicago Underground @ Syracuse Bulldogs Chicago steals a road victory 2-1.

Silk City Whales
Weekly Preview: The Whales welcome playoff contender San Diego in their only home game this week.

3rd Star – Gary Edwards, SDM – 35 saves

St. Clair Shores Saints
Weekly Preview: The Saints play host to Syracuse and Philadelphia at L’Anse Creuse Arena
Syracuse Bulldogs @ St. Clair Shores Saints The Saints get on the board first with Bill Clement’s 7th goal assisted by Wilson and Ramage.

But, not so fast, the Bulldogs have other ideas. In the 2nd, Smyl scores on a power play goal. Midway through the second, Boldirev scores his 28th goal for the Bulldogs.

No more scoring as Edwards has a great evening in goal.

Syracuse 2 SCS 1

1st – Edwards 29 saves
2nd – Smyl
3rd – Boldrirev

Philadelphia Firebirds @ St. Clair Shores Saints The Saints try to recover from the narrow loss against the Bulldogs.

Things look good for the Saints early as they start off with 3 goals. But, Low has a rough day in goal with the Firebirds hitting on 5 straight goals. Late in the game, Duguay scores a goal, but it’s too late as Philly goes on to win the game,5-4.

Dionne scores 2 goals for Philly, he now has 33.

SCS outshoots Philly, 43-18, but loses the game as Low was terrible.

Philadelphia 5 SCS 4

1st – Dionne 2 goals
2nd – Anderson
3rd – McKegney

Weekly Summary: Tough home series for the Saints as they lose two 1-goal games. This really hurts their playoff chances.

Biloxi Blades
Weekly Preview: Two Games For the Blades, need to win them both. Easy for team owner to say.
Philadelphia Firebirds Firebirds take this one easily 6-2
Chicago Underground Biloxi scores 4 in the third period… and only loses by 2 as Underground scores 4 in 3rd as well. Chicago 8 Biloxi 6
Weekly Summary: Biloxi takes it on the chin in both games, may not sound bad by owner has a double chin so it’s 4 times

Philadelphia Firebirds
Weekly Preview: Philly takes on Quebec and Macinak Island
Quebec City Le Blue @ Philadelphia Firebirds Leduc scores his 16th goal 30 seconds into the game but it was all Firebirds the rest of the way. Schmautz and Anderson score for Philly and Myre sets up a stonewall as the Firebirds take this one.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Philadelphia Firebirds The Moose waste little time in dismantling the Birds. Bill Barber popped 2 in during the first 5 minutes of the game and the Moose go on to drub Philly 6-1

Mosse goals McKechnie (sh) Ley, Sheppard and Hislop

Weekly Summary: Philly splits so for Philly not a bad week.

highlight…Randy ” the coaches fav” Holt laying out Barber from behind and refusing to go to the box getting agame misconduct….ahhhhh olde time hockey!

Vermont Foresters
Weekly Preview: somehow vermont screwed up and played this weeks game against silk city last week, so only 2 games this week against saskatoon and san diego.
Saskatoon Cyclone @ Vermont Foresters with division rival saskatoon and wayne gretzky in town vermont has glen hanlon in net for a rare home start, the cyclone counter with rogie vachon. vermont comes out flying and 12:13 into the game have a 3-0 lead after goals by foligno, leach and nilsson. the cyclone though fight back with goals from bob gainey late in the 1st and gretzky early in the 2nd make it a 3-2 game. the foresters though strike back with 3 more goals to close out the 2nd period up 6-2 chasing vachon after the 5th goal, as bob murray, reggie leach and craig ramsey score. unfortunately for vermont this is the last goal they would score as mckenzie keeps them out of the net in the 3rd. fortunately for vermont their lead was enough to hold up giving up only 2 in the 3rd by gretzky and dave taylor for the 6-4 win. it wasnt pretty but it was a victory. leach had 2g 1a, gretzky 2g 1a and nilsson 1g 2a.
San Diego Mariners @ Vermont Foresters the mariners make the very long trek to the upper northeast to face the foresters. vermont turns to super backup mike veisor to face richard sevigny for san diego. vermont scores first on a sh breakaway by dale mccourt but macdonald socred for the mariners on the same pp for a 1-1 tie. the game stayeed that way through an active 2nd period that saw the home team outshoot the visitors 19-11 but no goals scored. 57 seconds into the 3rd kent nilsson scored on the powerplay and 61 seconds later nilsson tips another one in for a 3-1 lead. by the 11 minute mark of the 3rd though the mariners has tied the game with goals by zuke and chapman. only 1:14 later reggie leach scored to give vermont a 4-3 that they woould hold onto until the end. kent nilsson has 2g and reggie leach a goal and assist.
Weekly Summary: so with the screw up by vermont they win the 2 games left unplayed for the week. kent nilsson and reggie leach both had 3g and 2a.

Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: 3 home games for the Moose. After a winless homestand last week, the only way is up.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Mackinac Island Moose Syracuse 1, Mackinac Island 1 – The statistics reflect the score, very even. Edwards and Meloche show that goalies can dominate. Syracuse gets a powerplay goal from Propp, while Lysiak gets the equalizer for the home team.
1st star – Lysiak 1g
2nd star – Propp 1g
3rd star – Edwards 30 saves
Biloxi Blades @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 4, Blades 3 – The Moose take a 2 goal lead (Napier and Lysiak) in the first 6 minutes of the game, only to see the Blades (Sullivan and Middleton) tie it up in the 2nd. The Moose turn on the switch in the 3rd with 2 goals early (Napier and Barber) and manage to hold off the Blades, except for one from Burrows, and take the win 4-3
1st star Napier 2g
2nd star Middleton 1g1a
3rd star Barber 1g
Quebec City Le Blue @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, Le Blue 4 – A nearly scoreless first period until Ratelle nets one with 5 seconds left for a 1-0 lead. Quebec dominiates the 2nd also, scoring 3 more (Goulet, LeDuc, Lumley) but allowing the Moose to light the lamp once (Dunlop) taking a 4-1 lead into the 3rd. The 3rd is all Moose in scoring even though the SOG is fairly even. All even strength goals with Barber netting 2 of the 4, the last being the game winner. And with 5 goals, free fudge for all ticket holders.
1st star – Barber 2g1a
2nd star – Goulet 1g1a
3rd star – Ratelle 1g1a
Weekly Summary: Nice turnaround this week with 2 wins and a tie at home in 3 games.

For the Moose, top performer of the week is Tom Lysiak with 1 goal in each game for a nice run of 3 games in a row with a goal.

For the visitors, Edwards 30 save perfomance in the first game of the week.
