1980 QUARTER FINALS – SAN DIEGO MARINERS @ VERMONT FORESTERS

 

PLAYOFF QUARTER FINAL MATCH UP
  Vermont ForestersVSan Diego Marinersermont faces San Diego in the opening round of the playoffs.

GAME #1 Cheevers vs Hanlon game 1 inaugural MWOTHL playoffs. Ben and Jerrys Center is decked out with all the toppings as the playoffs begin. the 1st period has exciting back and forth action with the foresters holding a 16-12 edge in shots on goal. Vermont scored the only goal of the period with 42 seconds left as Craig Ramsey found the back of the net. the second period saw the mariners power play take over scoring twice on the man advantage as Holmgren and MacDonald scored to take a 2-1 lead less than 4 minutes into the 2nd. Vermonts Kent Nilsson scored on the power play just a minute later to tie the score at 2. it remained that way until the 13:49 mark of the 3rd when Chapman scored to give san diego the lead again late in the 3rd. it looked like the visitors were going to score the upset but with 52 seconds left in the game a bob Murray shot found its way past Cheevers to tie the game at 3 and send it to overtime. 8:11 into the overtime and the foresters 4th line on the ice Don Saleski tipped a shot past the stunned mariners goalie to set off the celebration for the home team. Vermont out shot San Diego 20-7 for the 3rd period and overtime. Mark Howe had 2 assists for the winners.
GAME #2 Game 2 sees the same lineup for Vermont facing Gerry Cheevers for San Diego. this game had a decidedly different start. as the mariners jump out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Ted Bulley and 2 by Paul Holmgren and Glen Hanlon got a rare hook by the Vermont coach, replaced by Mike Veisor after the 3rd goal at the 19:37 mark of the 1st period. the second period though, was a complete reversal as Rich Preston, pat price, and Kent Nilsson scored to end the 2nd period tied at 3. the 3rd period saw Morris Lukowich score his first of the playoffs at the 6:20 mark and the foresters hold the mariners off for the last 13:40 to take a 2-0 series lead.
  2 games, 2 4-3 victories for the Vermont foresters. it wasn’t easy though having to score in the last minute of the 3rd period to send game 1 to overtime and then having to over come a 3-0 first period deficit to win the 2nd game.  Holmgren scored 3 goals for San Diego but Vermont held Charlie Simmer and Gil Perreault without a goal. Mark Howe had 3 assists, Kent Nilsson 2g 1a and Morris Lukowich 1g 2a.
GAME #3 Vail put Vermont up by 1 7:12 into the 3rd, but goals by Simmer and GW by Sharpley with 4 min to go wins the game for Mariners 3-2
GAME #4 Hannlon was too much for San Diego between the pipes. He stopped 35 and preserved the shutout 3-0 Vermont.
  Vermont takes commanding 3-1 lead in series.   Game 5 with Vermont up 3-1 trying to win the series at home
GAME #5 Vermont goes with Hanlon in net coming off a game 4 shutout against Cheevers for the mariners. Vermont dominates play this game out shooting San Diego 51-21 trying to close out the series but the score did not follow the shot totals as the mariners win 4-2 to keep the series alive. goals by Chapman, Smith, Watson and Perreault. McCourt and leach score for Vermont both on tip ins of Dale Hoganson shots.  Hanlon was shaky and pat price got a game misconduct after a fight with Grant Mulvey 11:30 into the 1st period. back to the west coast for game 6.
  back to San Diego with Vermont still up 3-2
GAME #6 San Diego behind a great 2nd period and early 3rd period barrage force a game 7 in Vermont with a 6-2 win. Charlie Simmer with 2 goals and Holmgren with 2 assists. Eddie Cheever was amazing in goal with 36 saves.
  Series ties 3-3.  –  Game 7 Vermont hosting San Diego
GAME #7 It comes down to a 1 game playoff in Vermont after the Foresters twice failed to close out the mariners.  Hanlon versus Cheevers and Vermont again has to play catch up hockey as San Diego scores first 11:37 into the game and Gil Perreault again strikes. the foresters tie it late in the period on a ppg by mark howe. early in the second Chapman gives the mariners the lead again with his 4th of the series but Kent Nilsson ties it 45 seconds later.  Smith gives San Diego the lead again with just under 5 minutes to go in the 2nd period. Vermont starts the 3rd pressing to tie but cant break through until at the 11:53 Mark Watson scores for the Mariners to make it a 2 goal lead.  Kent Nilsson nets his second of the game at 16:46 of the 3rd to make it 4-3 but Vermont is unable to get another past Cheevers and are eliminated.   Vermont dominated the action out shooting San Diego 40-21, including 11-3 in the 3rd but Cheevers kept thwarting their chances.  Maple syrup harvesting begins a little early this year because of series co-mvp’s Cheevers and Perreault 2g & 7a.
