Paul Reinhart scored at the 12:00 mark of the 3rd to bring Brooklyn within 1, but Merlin Malinowski erased that with a goal of his own at 16:20 on the power play. Less than a minute later though Mike Gartner netted his 2nd of the night on the power play to bring things back to within 1 and set the stage for a fiery finish.

With the goalie pulled, the Harbor Rats blitzed Saskatoon goalie Reggie Lemelin. Lemelin made a few fine saves but then the extra man found some open room and set up defenceman Behn Wilson who rifled it top shelf into the Saskatoon net to tie it up with one 38 seconds to go.

Arghhhh.

Saskatoon’s hopes for two points dwindled with the imminent tie, but it was not to be. Brooklyn won the faceoff and marched into the Saskatoon end with thoughts of stealing two. That Wilson guy again fired a slapshot that was blocked by defenceman Rick Green who immediately started the breakout with a pass up to Jacques Richard. Richard dashed up the left wing and fed the puck cross ice to Dino Ciccarelli who kind of flubbed his shot that instead found itself on the stick of Malinowski who tipped it past the stunned Brooklyn keeper to give the Cyclone the crazy W.

One playing really well – Bob Sauve of Silk City – and another playing like he was coming off a two-week bender – Reggie Lemelin.

Lemelin lasted all of just 19 minutes in the game allowing three goals on nine shots. Putrid or what? Rogie Vachon played his old French Canadian ass off and allowed just one goal on 15 shots, but the hometown boys couldn’t recover from the Lemelin factor and fell 5-2 to a much better playing team.

Joel Quenneville opened the scoring though for the one bright spot for Saskatoon with a short-handed breakaway goal 7-1/2 minutes into the game.

That only seemed to piss off the Whales though as they rattled off four goals – Kehoe, Johnson, Nachbaur, and Sutter before Gaston Gingras got one back at 5:38 of the 3rd to bring Saskatoon within 2.

Dave Langevin put the nail in the coffin though scoring an empty netter with 13 seconds left and that was it. Key in the game was giving up seven power plays to Silk City as opposed to getting only three chances for the Cyclone. Gretzky was a non-factor in this one spending much of the game on the penalty kill and followed up his one-assist performance in the previous game with nothing this one. What a bum.

Oh well.

… a fine choice for 3rd star by the stupid software giving it to a guy that only played 10 minutes in the game but scored an empty net goal. Egads.

The first period had the pendulum swing the way of the Cyclone who outshot the Bulldogs 20-9 by the midway mark of the 2nd period. The pendulum then swung the way of Tim Young and the Bulldogs and knocked the Cyclone into the pit as they fell 3-2.

Mr. Young had a not bad night for Syracuse scoring all three goals with the last coming on a power play at 7:44 of the 3rd period.

The slumping Gretzky managed a single lowly assist in the game on a goal by Dave Taylor.

Fingers in Saskatoon are already starting to point and a lot of them are directed at Darcy Rota who instead of being inspired by being one the top line with Gretzky and Taylor has just one assist in seven games and may be dragging them down.

At 5:51 of the 2nd, Andre Savard (5) continues his torrid start, but then Saskatoon scores two goals about two minutes apart; adding insult to injury, it’s the first goal of the season for both Gainey and Rota.

At 19:16 of the 2nd, Paul Gardner (3) begins his statement, scoring the first of his three goals for the hat trick and showing Gretzky that maybe he isn’t all that.

The floodgates open in the 3rd, as Charlestown piles on 5 goals against Vachon – who’s eventually pulled for Lemelin as the Chiefs pummel Saskatoon 8-3. The Saskatoon defense (I use that term loosely) had no answer for the Chief onslaught – even knocking Paul Coffey and Tom McCarthy out of the game didn’t matter. It did however prevent McCarthy from having the opportunity to match Gardner’s hat trick. Bastages.

Then, Ftorek and Babych score 2 goals for the Shores and they are up 4-2. Smyl scores a goal and its now 4-3, the Saints. 7 goals were scored in the 1st period. Whew

In the 2nd, Hill scores for the Bulldogs to tie it.

In the 3rd, on a power play, the Bulldogs get Higgins’ 2nd goal for the game winner. Syracuse wins a narrow one.

The usually low scoring Ducks score three in the second period to take a 3-0 lead and hold on for the win in a wild third period. After Rick Middleton’s second goal of the game and fourth of the season put New Castle up 4-0 with a little over 10 minutes left in the game, Chicago came to life. Mike Bossy (6) and Eaves (2) scored to make it 4-2 with 2:27 remaining. Yvan Lambert then got a huge goal (2) for the Ducks to put the lead back to 3 goals at 5-2. The teams traded goals in the final minute with the Ducks goal coming on an empty net.
The Ducks lost two defensemen to injuries (Lanz and Schoenfeld) and played much of the game with only four very tired defensemen

Billy Smith made 31 saves for the Ducks as the Underground had the shot advantage 34-32.

The physical nature of the game backfired on Ohio, as mackinaw Island scored on two of the five man-advantage situations. Blake Dunlop collected a goal and assist for the winners, while Giles Meloche turned aside 24 shots in the victory.

Jim Rutherford stopped 19 shots and Ohio had two fights and 22 penalty minutes in the loss.

Tony McKegney had two goals and Marcel Dionne assisted on each of the goals for the Firebirds. Richard Sevigny stopped 22 shots in taking the win.

Paul Woods scored the lone marker for the Legends, as Jim Rutherford stopped 24 shots.
