Minutes later Savard gets a hooking call and Philly again coverts as Lindstrom gets his 27th from Secord and Carlyle. Chicago bounces back as McNab beats Wamsley with his 22 from Boimstruck and Ferguson making it 2-1. But Philly explodes after that

Ex-Chief Wilf Paiement opens the scoring with a short-handed goal at 8:50, and then PIT tacks on another near the end of the 1st to take an early 2-0 lead.

But at 3:54 of the 2nd, ex-Spirit Chouinard beats St. Croix on the PP to cut the lead in half. Less than 90 seconds later, Charlestown scores another and Huber (ex PIT) adds a helper.

Then at 13:54 of the 3rd, the Chiefs get the game-winning goal by Lever (8), and Chouinard adds an assist (43) to rub salt in the wound.

The Chiefs roll the dice in benching many of their best players (Gardner, Bourque, Potvin, Hlinka, and others) and the depth guys respond with their added ice time.

It got really ugly in the 2nd & 3rd periods when a lot of roughing, fighting & other mischief took over.
Even the Goalies went at it in this one.

Chicago Fans were the extra attacker in this one as they got the Firebirds drunk on the ice & the Underground snuck up on them & scored 2 in the 3rd to battle to a tie.

Tim Kerr’s 29th goal of the season on the power play proved to be the winner. His score with just under 11 minutes to go extended the lead to 4-1. The 89’ers scored twice late to close the gap to 4-3.

Murray Eaves scored twice to be named the Number One Star for North Carolina. Ohio won the shots battle, 40-20 and cashed in twice in six opportunities on the power play.

Gord Lane’s first goal of the season at 18:25 of the third period was the game-winner for the Underground. Don Maloney’s 21st goal at 19:29 gave Cincinnati a late shot–but that was the final score of the game.

Pete Peeters stopped 29 shots in picking up the win. Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies each haad a goal and an assist for Chicago.

Everyone in the league hates Philadelphia, so it looks like Ohio will join the club too!

An eight-goal first period set the tone for the evening, as after Al Secord scored 34 seconds in–the Legends ran five straight goals on the board. Marcel Dionne put a pair on the board and it was 5-3 Ohio after ONE period.

In the second, Ohio added a pair and it was 7-4 after two. After Mel Bridgman scored with 1:07 to go the score was 7-6, Legends. A pair of empty-net scores made the final, 9-6.

Ohio scored nine times on 25 shots, while Philadelphia scored six times on 38 shots.

Notables: Silk City right-winger Rick Kehoe fires off an astonishing 10 shots and finishes with four assists; the Whales for the game managed 60 shots against the Dynamo, with Tremblay who fails to crack the three-star selection despite the 54 saves. This writer’s childhood hero, Silk City goalie Bob Sauve (of Sabres Aud fame), yields seven goals while saving 28.

2nd period – The Moose blow their first good scoring chance on the powerplay, but 5 minutes later find a little magic when a Cunneyworth penalty results in Dunlop finding the back of the net. A nice penalty kill by the Moose for an Engblom infraction brings a little more life into the arena, and the 2nd period ends a little livelier, 2-1 visitors going to the locker room.

3rd period starts with a little scuffle, Anderson, and Lysiak getting 2 minutes each. The visitors get called for hooking a couple of minutes later, but the Moose are unable to convert it to points. As the period continues to bleed minutes, and the crowd bleeding energy, the Moose finally get their act together, and its Napier finding the net with his 45th of the season and making all even at 2. More get up and go in the team and crowd as we go forward, and when Babych gets called for holding, its Napier showing his leadership with another goal to get the team over the hump, and make it 3-2 Moose. Tight play continues down the stretch with the Moose defense limiting shots by the 89’ers. In the final minutes, the 89’ers pull the goalie and get some shots in, but a couple of steals and rushes see empty-net goals by Propp and Lysiak in the final minute to make the final look more impressive than it really was.

2nd period sees Richard once again score, enjoying the spotlight, and the Moose go up by 2. Moore even plays for a while is broken when the Alpha cut the lead in half, Tardif with the goal. 3-2 Moose heading to the 3rd.

3rd period sees good tight defense, a Micheletti/Watson skirmish the most excitement for the first 15 minutes. Finally, Propp finds an opening and the breathing is a little easier for the Moose faithfull heading towards the finish. The Alpha pull their goalie late, and the Moose once again thwart that effort, and Giles gets a cheap EN in the final 80 seconds to make the final 5-2 Moose.

2nd period, The Moose respond early when a Schoenfeld penalty gives the home team just enough of an advantage for Park to blast one in. The Ducks respond quickly, as Middleton gets one at 8 minutes in. Teams play even the rest of the period and its 3-1 Ducks.

3rd period, An anxious crowd wanting to see a comeback is delighted when McKechnie scores with 10 minutes left to go. The lead a mere single goal, but the Ducks defense is up to the task, and along with Smith in goal, are able to shut down any more scoring, preserving the 3-2 road win.
