Delray Alpha @ Vermont Foresters The Alpha put a surprise on the Foresters getting 3 goals in the 2nd (Taylor, Sutter, and Ciccarelli) to take a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd. McCourt scored in the 1st for Vermont. Then the Foresters tie it up with goals from Hughes and Hunter, but Gretzky gets Delray back on top. Hunter then ties it up with his 2nd goal and here is where Delray takes command. 3 minutes to go and Sutter and Tardif score for the Alpha and they hold on for the 6-4 win.

2. Ftorek 1 goal, 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Vermont drops both home games this week – but they worked hard to lose those two games.
Philadelphia Firebirds
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago and Brooklyn come to town
Chicago Underground @ Philadelphia Firebirds The Vile Underground comes to town. And this time Philly was ready

1st- Houston takes a cross-checking penalty to start the game and the much-maligned Philly PP converts right away as Maruk gets his 59th from Secord and Boxxy. Minutes later Savard gets a hooking call and Philly again coverts as Lindstrom gets his 27th from Secord and Carlyle. Chicago bounces back as McNab beats Wamsley with his 22 from Boimstruck and Ferguson making it 2-1. But Philly explodes after that
Mullen 28th from Secord and Maruk
Tonelli 27th from Bridgeman Hartsburg
Linseman 26th from Mullen and Maruk

CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 2 home games this week including a big one with Brooklyn!
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers These teams have been battling all season and they might not like each other – 32 PIM in the game – 5PPs for the Rats, 4 for the Rangers – but the Rangers score on 2 of them, the Rats don’t.
And that was indicative of the final score…
Lafleur and Cloutier (PP) tally for the Rangers in the 1st for the only scores.
Valentine, Trottier (PP) and Siltanen score for the Rangers in the 2nd for the only scores.
Stastny and Reinhart scored for the Rats in the 3rd for the only scores.
Adding that up, it’s a BIG 5-2 win for the Rangers!
STARS (all CAP)
1. Cloutier 1 goal, 3 assists
2. Trottier 1 goal, 2 assists
3. Robinson 3 assists
Did I mention it was a BIG win!
Delray Alpha @ CapJack Rangers In what hopefully is the final resting day for the remaining regulars – the Rangers don’t quite have enough mustard to overcome a 5 goal Delray 2nd period!
Keith Acton (2 goals, 2 assists) and Dave Taylor (4 assists) each get to the 4 point mark. What looked like a decent game for the Rangers turns into a disgust fest.
Rota and Tardiff score for Delray in the 1st and Kotsopoulos and Arniel (his 1st) score for CapJack, 2-2 after 1.
Then Action and Tambellini trade goal. But then Acton, Vaive, Risebrough (SH) and Lowe pummel the puck past Dion and send him to the shows and it’s 7-3 after 2 for the Alpha.
Mulvey gets a PP goal 16 seconds into the 3rd, but Gingras gets one for DelRay a few minutes later and hopes fade. Late goal by Martin brings the final score to 8-5 Delray.
STARS (all DEL)
1. Action 2 goals, 2 assists
2. Lowe 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Taylor 4 assists
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers go 1-1 at home and finish their resting (pretty much). But at least the one win was against Brooklyn – that was BIG (did I mention that?)!
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game this week, against Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlestown Chiefs This was a game of former players. A mid-season trade shuffled the deck for both teams, and most of them played key roles in this one.

Ex-Chief Wilf Paiement opens the scoring with a short-handed goal at 8:50, and then PIT tacks on another near the end of the 1st to take an early 2-0 lead.

But at 3:54 of the 2nd, ex-Spirit Chouinard beats St. Croix on the PP to cut the lead in half. Less than 90 seconds later, Charlestown scores another and Huber (ex PIT) adds a helper.

Then at 13:54 of the 3rd, the Chiefs get the game-winning goal by Lever (8), and Chouinard adds an assist (43) to rub salt in the wound.

The Chiefs roll the dice in benching many of their best players (Gardner, Bourque, Potvin, Hlinka, and others) and the depth guys respond with their added ice time.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Only one home game, but two much-needed points as we chase Delray and Gretzky.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: only one home game in Brooklyn this week, where division title hopes are fading fast
Charlestown Chiefs @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Chiefs run out to a 3-1 lead after the first, but the Rats come back on goals by Anton Stastny and Bobby Smith to tie the game in the 2nd. However, just 1:30 passes before Ray Bourque nets his 9th of the season to put Charlestown back in front after 2. It takes our 5th power-play chance, with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation for Bengt-Ake Gustafsson to tie it again. And that’s how it would end, a 4-4 tie.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: one point for the 4th time in the last 5 home games, not going to get the Rats into the postseason
Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With only one home game this week the Underground gets ready to take on HATED RIVAL Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Firebirds @ Chicago Underground Chicago lights the lamp first & the home fans get into the game by showering the Firebirds bench with beers from the stands. No the Chicago fans weren’t throwing them at the Firebirds. They were buying them from the vendors & sending them down for the Philadelphia players to chug them during the game.

It got really ugly in the 2nd & 3rd periods when a lot of roughing, fighting & other mischief took over.
Even the Goalies went at it in this one.

Chicago Fans were the extra attacker in this one as they got the Firebirds drunk on the ice & the Underground snuck up on them & scored 2 in the 3rd to battle to a tie.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Philadelphia 5

Labatts – 3-Star Selection:

Star #1 – Pierre Mondou 3G (Chicago Fans deserved #1 Stat as well)

Star #3 – Ken Linseman 1G

Syracuse Bulldogs @ Saint Clair Shores Saints The Saints shock their fans by winning their 2nd game in a row. In the 2nd, Sharpley and Ramage score. LaRouche scores his 1st of 2 goals, but the Saints get an insurance goal that holds up by Ramage to win the game.

SCS 3 Syracuse 2

1st -LaRouche 2 goals
2nd – Ramage 2 goals
3rd – Sharpley 1 goal; 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: SCS has a pretty good week as they defeat Cap Jack and Syracuse. They do lose in the opener to Ohio.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome three opponents this week. Going nowhere, the Legends are starting to turn up their level of play–now that there is nothing to play for…
North Carolina 89’ers @ Ohio Legends Ohio 4, North Carolina 3

Tim Kerr’s 29th goal of the season on the power play proved to be the winner. His score with just under 11 minutes to go extended the lead to 4-1. The 89’ers scored twice late to close the gap to 4-3.

Murray Eaves scored twice to be named the Number One Star for North Carolina. Ohio won the shots battle, 40-20 and cashed in twice in six opportunities on the power play.

Chicago Underground @ Ohio Legends Chicago 3, Ohio 2

Gord Lane’s first goal of the season at 18:25 of the third period was the game-winner for the Underground. Don Maloney’s 21st goal at 19:29 gave Cincinnati a late shot–but that was the final score of the game.

Pete Peeters stopped 29 shots in picking up the win. Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies each haad a goal and an assist for Chicago.

Philadelphia Firebirds @ Ohio Legends Ohio 9, Philadelphia 6

Everyone in the league hates Philadelphia, so it looks like Ohio will join the club too!

An eight-goal first period set the tone for the evening, as after Al Secord scored 34 seconds in–the Legends ran five straight goals on the board. Marcel Dionne put a pair on the board and it was 5-3 Ohio after ONE period.

In the second, Ohio added a pair and it was 7-4 after two. After Mel Bridgman scored with 1:07 to go the score was 7-6, Legends. A pair of empty-net scores made the final, 9-6.

Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Dynamo, playing well as of late but relegated to the role of spoiler, hosts two teams with playoff hopes in Brooklyn and Silk City.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlotte Dynamo Against their division rivals, Charlotte rallies late with three straight third period goals but subsequently gives up an even-strength goal with 1:09 to play, resulting in a 5-5 tie. Anton Stastny shines for the Harbor Rats with a hat-trick including the last moment tying goal. Charlie Simmer and Dale Hawerchuk sparkle for Charlotte with two goals apiece, including the final four by the team to help the Dynamo overcome deficits of 3-1 and 4-2.

Three stars:
Star 1 – Stastny (Brooklyn), the hat trick
Star 2 – Simmer two goals four points
Star 3- Dale Hawerchuk, two goals four points

Notables: Glenn Anderson totals four assists for Charlotte, Greg Millen saves 36 for Brooklyn while Vincent Tremblay finishes with 32 stops for Charlotte.

Silk City Whales @ Charlotte Dynamo Charlotte scores the first four goals of the game and hangs on for a 7-6 win against the comeback-minded shooting-crazy Whales. The Dynamo benefit by four goals from their blueliners who steal the spotlight. Defensemen Glen Wesley, Dave Langevin and Paul Schmyr all account for three of the first four goals of the game in building the 4-0 lead. Schmyr scores his second goal with 11:33 left in the game that gave the Dynamo a 7-5 lead at the time. Larry Murphy scores for Silk City just a minute later, but Charlotte goalie Vincent Tremblay is outstanding down the stretch in shutting down Silk City and finishing with an eye-popping 54 SAVES.

Three stars:
1 – Shmyr (Charlotte) Two goals, three points
2- Barry Beck (Silk City) Two goals, three points
3 – Dave Langevin (Charlotte) One goal, three points

Notables: Silk City right-winger Rick Kehoe fires off an astonishing 10 shots and finishes with four assists; the Whales for the game managed 60 shots against the Dynamo, with Tremblay who fails to crack the three-star selection despite the 54 saves. This writer’s childhood hero, Silk City goalie Bob Sauve (of Sabres Aud fame), yields seven goals while saving 28.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Led by goalie Vincent Tremblay who records 91 saves over the two games, Charlotte gets three out of a possible four points against playoff hopefuls with winning records.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games, all against likely playoff teams, will be a good test for the Moose.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, 89’ers 2 – The visitors come out with a lot of energy and convert that advantage to 2 goals in the period, Broten and Wickenheiser, and the lifeless Moose go to 1st intermission down 2-0.

2nd period – The Moose blow their first good scoring chance on the powerplay, but 5 minutes later find a little magic when a Cunneyworth penalty results in Dunlop finding the back of the net. A nice penalty kill by the Moose for an Engblom infraction brings a little more life into the arena, and the 2nd period ends a little livelier, 2-1 visitors going to the locker room.

3rd period starts with a little scuffle, Anderson, and Lysiak getting 2 minutes each. The visitors get called for hooking a couple of minutes later, but the Moose are unable to convert it to points. As the period continues to bleed minutes, and the crowd bleeding energy, the Moose finally get their act together, and its Napier finding the net with his 45th of the season and making all even at 2. More get up and go in the team and crowd as we go forward, and when Babych gets called for holding, its Napier showing his leadership with another goal to get the team over the hump, and make it 3-2 Moose. Tight play continues down the stretch with the Moose defense limiting shots by the 89’ers. In the final minutes, the 89’ers pull the goalie and get some shots in, but a couple of steals and rushes see empty-net goals by Propp and Lysiak in the final minute to make the final look more impressive than it really was.

1st star – Napier 2G 4pts
2nd – Propp 1G 3 pts
3rd = Dunlop 1G 3pts

Delray Alpha @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, Alpha 2 – The Moose once again is too gracious a host, letting the visitors take the early lead when Vaive posts the first goal only 3 minutes in. A stern rebuke from the head coach gets the teams sober and the defense stiffens for the Moose. Rota a MacLean in a bit of the scuffle, then after killing off a Barber hooking penalty, another scuffle, this time Rota and Park. Back at full strength, the Moose are able to score twice, MacLean, and then within the minute, Richard a rare 4th line goal. Both teams tally one more penalty kill and we go to intermission 2-1 Moose.

2nd period sees Richard once again score, enjoying the spotlight, and the Moose go up by 2. Moore even plays for a while is broken when the Alpha cut the lead in half, Tardif with the goal. 3-2 Moose heading to the 3rd.

3rd period sees good tight defense, a Micheletti/Watson skirmish the most excitement for the first 15 minutes. Finally, Propp finds an opening and the breathing is a little easier for the Moose faithfull heading towards the finish. The Alpha pull their goalie late, and the Moose once again thwart that effort, and Giles gets a cheap EN in the final 80 seconds to make the final 5-2 Moose.

Free fudge for all ticketholders!

1st star – Richard 2G
2nd – Meloche 35 saves
3rd – MacLean 1G

New Castle Ducks @ Mackinac Island Moose Ducks 3, Moose 2 – 1st period is a tight defensive battle, marred by just one tally, Clarke on the powerplay after Smith is called for tripping. 1-0 Ducks

2nd period, The Moose respond early when a Schoenfeld penalty gives the home team just enough of an advantage for Park to blast one in. The Ducks respond quickly, as Middleton gets one at 8 minutes in. Teams play even the rest of the period and its 3-1 Ducks.

3rd period, An anxious crowd wanting to see a comeback is delighted when McKechnie scores with 10 minutes left to go. The lead a mere single goal, but the Ducks defense is up to the task, and along with Smith in goal, are able to shut down any more scoring, preserving the 3-2 road win.

1st star – Middleton 1G
2nd – Clarke 1G
3rd – Walter 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 wins out of 3 against quality teams are less than desired, but probably par, considering the talent on the ice.
Delray Alpha
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Delray gets one home game this week against division rival Charlestown
Charlestown Chiefs @ Delray Alpha In a huge game that had the two teams separated by 1 point Delray gets a lopsided 7-3 win. Gretzky finally starts scoring getting a hat trick with goals 38/39 and 40. Delray outshoots Charlestown 31-17 in the dominating team effort and Ciccarelli gets 3 assists.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Delray continues to hold down first place with a huge dominating game
