Charlestown Chiefs | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two home games this week as we battle for 1st place. |
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Charlestown Chiefs | They may be out of the playoff picture, but the Bulldogs still have some bite in them.
It takes a Gradin (45) goal on the PP with under 4 minutes left for the Chiefs to pull this one out 5-4. We were down 3-1 early in the 3rd so it was a nice rally for the boys while Gardner, Bourque, and Potvin all sit out with nagging injuries. Scoring Summary Star 1: CHA Hlinka 2 G, 3 Pts GWG: Thomas Gradin Notables: SYR Fraser 17 PIM, Staniowski 38 saves |
Ohio Legends @ Charlestown Chiefs | That big 3rd period comeback last game wore us out, as we surrender 3 late goals to Ohio to turn a 5-3 lead into a 6-5 defeat. Losing two of our best defenders (Savard and McEwen) to injury really hurts (pun intended). Paul Gardner scores his 61st and 62nd goals on the year in the loss, and Bernie Nicholls is giving a sneak peek as to what’s to come next season.
Scoring Summary Injuries: Manno(OHI)-game Savard(CHA)-game McEwen(CHA)-game Star 1: CHA Gardner 2 G, 3 Pts GWG: Lars Molin Notables: OHI Hanlon 31 saves, Rochefort 17 PIM |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 2 of 4 points isn’t what the doctor ordered; Delray is licking their chops. |
Syracuse Bulldogs | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | One home game vs Silk City |
Silk City Whales @ Syracuse Bulldogs | 14 goals were scored in this one. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they got 8 of em winning 8-6 Stars #1 SYR Fraser Hat Trick #2 SYR Higgins 2G 4pts #3 SYR Boldirev 1G 3pts |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Syracuse beats a good Silk City squad |
Vermont Foresters | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | 2 home game, Brooklyn and Mack Island (where bicycles reign supreme) |
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Vermont Foresters | Harbor Rats lay claim to 1st after falling behind 1-0 on a Howe goal for Vermont. Lapointe and Smith then get Brooklyn goals and it’s 2-1 after 1. Rats came out biting with 18-5 edge on SOG. But then the Foresters got their axes in gear and reversed that with 18-6 SOG edge in the 2nd and it paid off with 2 goals, Nilsson and Lukowich (#55!). Score stays 3-2 Vermont going into the final 2 minutes, Brooklyn goes goalie less, Preston gets EN for Vermont with 1:10 to go. Sheppard then notches one for Brooklyn in the final minute, but that’s it. Final 4-3 Vermont. STARS 1. VER – Lukowich 1 goal, 2 assists 2. VER – Nilsson 1 goal, 1 assist 3. BRO – Smith 1 goal, 1 assist |
Mackinac Island Moose @ Vermont Foresters | Vermont, thrilled with the Brooklyn win comes out strong against the Moose. Lukowich gets #56 in the 1st then a minute into the 2nd he gets #57. Then the Moose charge – Propp gets a PP goal, Dunlop (Reggie?) gets the game-tying goal with 6 to go in the 2nd. But Then Nilsson and Greschner score for Vermont and it’s 4-2 after 2. 5 minutes into the 3rd, Barber scores for the Moose to pull them to within 1, but Hunter pretty much ices it with a goal with 2:10 to go. But Mackinac Island pulls the goalie and Kurri scores with 16 seconds to go and it’s 5-4. But the axemen cut down any chances the Moose had left and that’s the final with Vermont getting another victory. STARS (All VER) 1. Lukowich 2 goals, 1 assist 2. Nilsson 1 goal, 2 assists 3. Hunter 1 goal, 1 assist. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 2 games, 4 points, new blood called up from minors have been paying off for Vermont. |
Mackinac Island Moose | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Silk City, and possible first-round playoff opponent, New Castle, come to the Island for a horse ride and some hockey. |
Silk City Whales @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 4, Whales 1 – Lysiak sitting this one out, Richard in his place, and its Richard who breaks the ice, figuratively, on a breakaway on the PK, netting a rare shortie, for the only goal of the first period.
2nd period sees the Moose go up 2, MacLean scoring on a powerplay, (Peplinski hooking) to make it 2-0 early in the 2nd. Defenses prevail until late in the 2nd when Kehoe blasts one in just before intermission. 2-1 score on the board for most of the period, goalies combine to stop 20 shots. Late in the 3rd, MacLean gives the Moose the insurance goal, and then Barber adds a meaningless empty netter to make the final 4-1. Melanson saves 30 of 31 SOG. 1st star – MacLean 2G |
New Castle Ducks @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 5, Ducks 2 – 1st period is owned by Smith and Meloche. no goals scored. Fights between Clarke and O’Connell, O’Reilly and Smith.
2nd period = Dam bursts on the scoring. First Propp, 91 seconds in. The Ducks responded with Nedomansky. Finally, the Moose get a little comfort with goals from Propp and Lysiak, to make it 3-1. Just before intermission, Pederson makes it interesting again, and its 3-2. In the 3rd, Meloche builds a brick wall, to ensure the win. MacLean and Propp (Hat Trick) build some cushion, and the final is 5-2 Moose 1st star = Propp 3G |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 4 points in our final 2 home games of the season. Now a long 4 game road trip to end the season. Hopefully, we can manage enough points to secure 2nd seed. |

Rangers Steve Shutt gets his 28th from Siltanen and Lafluer to make it 4-1 but before the Minutes later Maruk gets his HAT TRICK 74th from Langway. Delray Alpha @ Saint Clair Shores Saints | Ciccarelli scores his 70th goal for the Alpha in the 1st period! No more scoring until the 3rd period when Wayne Babych scores his 12th. No more scoring and the game ends in a tie.
Delray 1 SCS 1 1st -Babych |
Vermont Foresters @ Saint Clair Shores Saints | Babych scores early on a power-play goal. Malone scores for the Saints next. Then, Duguay scores his 36th goal on a short-handed chance. The shutout is spoiled in the 3rd as the Foresters get a short-handed goal by Vickers.
SCS 3 Delray 1 1st -Duguay |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | SCS does pretty well this week as it earns 3 points with a win against Vermont and a tie against Delray. |
New Castle Ducks | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Ducks have only one home game this week – against Patrick Division leader Brooklyn. New Castle has all but clinched a playoff spot although North Carolina and Chicago can still mathematically catch them while those two teams battle each other for what is likely the final playoff spot in the Conference |
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ New Castle Ducks | NEW 3 BRO 3 The Ducks and Harbor Rats have been evenly matched all season as the teams came into this one with 1-1-1 records against each other. And this one was no different. New Castle struck first and early on a goal by Marian Stastny. Mark Osborne tied it for Brooklyn before Rick Middleton’s 53rd goal of the year made it 2-1 Ducks after one. The only goal in the second period went to Brooklyn as defenseman Larry Playfair scored to tie the game. In the final frame, Gustafosson got his 2d of the game and 28th of the year to put the Rats ahead 3-2 early in the third. New Castle tied it on a power-play goal by Barry Pederson, his 58th of the year. And that’s how it ended. NEW outshot BRO 29-14 as Ron Low excelled in goal for the Rats. Bunny Larocque had a shaky outing for the Ducks allowing 3 goals on only 14 shots. THREE STARS: 1- BRO Osborne 1G 2 A 2-BRO Gustafsson 1G 2 A 3- NEW Pederson 1G 2 ATerry O’Reilly got a misconduct in the first period when he argued a charging call against him. The tough RW now has 178 PIM on the season. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Ducks get 1 of 2 possible points and, together with their road loss against MAC, are now 39-26-10 with 2 more road games to play this week. One more point for the Ducks or a loss by North Carolina and the Ducks will clinch their first-ever MWOTHL playoff spot. |
CapJack Rangers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Rangers still in what appears to be a futility battle for the Patrick division crown have 3 home games this week – woohoo! But a road loss to them dang rascals from Philly hasn’t helped our cause. |
North Carolina 89’ers @ CapJack Rangers | Ok, we start things off the 89’ers! But we don’t start very well. Payne gets a North Carolina goal in the 1st on a PP, then Ogrodnick and Goulet get 2nd-period goals and we are behind 3-0 going into the 3rd. Cloutier decides we can score and does so 4 1/2 minutes into the 3rd, but even when we go extra attacker at the end, we can’t get anymore – but Hopkins gets an empty-netter to make the final 4-1 89’ers! Odd – CapJack dominates pretty much all the stats except goals (or goalkeeping). We even fail on six PP chances!! STARS (all NOC – duh!) 1. Fuhr – 29 saves 2. Payne 1 goal 3. Ogrodnick 1 goal |
Ohio Legends @ CapJack Rangers | OK – we have to do better than game 1. So we revert to the 89’ers tactics and lose just about every stat category – and it works! We win the goals scored (or goalkeeping stats)! Rangers Valentine gets a goal in the 1st and another in the 2nd for a 2-0 lead before Currie shows some Legends presence. 2-1 Rangers after 2. 3rd period and DeBlois scores early for the 3-1 lead, then Trottier gets his 51st making it 4-1 halfway through the period. Korab cuts it to 4-2 with 5 to go, but Russell adds an empty netter to seal the deal at 5-2! STARS (all CAP) 1. Valentine 2 goals 2. Trottier 1 goal, 1 assist (19 FO wins) 3. Russell 1 goal, 1 assist And Dion makes 37 saves! (wore his glove this game) |
Delray Alpha @ CapJack Rangers | Last week it was a 7-7 tie with the Alpha – so hoping for something bigger and better. Again, we go with the let the other team do all the shooting (46 SOG for Delray to 27 for Rangers) and again it works!! But it took a lot of blocks, hits and 44 saves from Dion – really glad he’s decided to wear his glove!!). But it didn’t start well. Hunter scores 3 1/2 minutes in – then Vaive makes it 2-0 with a PP goal 10 minutes in. But that woke up the Rangers and Shutt, Cloutier and Lafluer each tally in the final 9 minutes of the period to give CapJack the 3-2 lead after 1. Then it was the Valentine show again as he scores 2 more goals, this time in the 3rd and the Rangers win skating away 5-2! Seems to be their magic note these days. STARS (all CAP) 1. Valentine 2 goals, 1 assist 2. Lafleur 1 goal, 2 assists 3. Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 3 games, 4 points, slow start, good finish! |
Brooklyn Harbor Rats | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | somehow still in the Patrick Division race, the Rats welcome Chicago and Syracuse to Brooklyn this week. |
Chicago Underground @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | Underground open a 3-0 lead in the 2nd period, but it’s Mark Johnson with a pair of 3rd-period goals to even things. With under 2 minutes remaining, Terry Murray snaps the tie to give the visitors the lead, but just:29 seconds later, Bobby Smith scores his 46th of the season to level things again. And that’s how it ends, 4-4. |
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | Once again the Rats play comeback, trailing 4-2 heading into the 3rd period. Dave Keon nets a short-handed goal to make it a one-goal game before Mark Osborne evens things with just under 9 minutes left. But the Bulldogs aren’t finished, and Curt Fraser’s second of the game, with just 1:11 on the clock, is the difference in the Syracuse 5-4 road win. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | one point in a pair of home games as the Rats keep trying to give the division to Capjack |
Silk City Whales | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Whales welcome in two foes from the other conference in their bid to lock up their first-ever playoff spot. |
Saint Clair Shores Saints | The Whales score three goals in eight minutes spanning the second and third periods to open up a tight game and defeat the Saints 5-3 Mark Messier scored twice for Silk City.

Ohio Legends | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Ohio Legends are limping home now. Battered and tattered. New Castle and Pittsburgh roll in looking to hand out beatings… |
New Castle Ducks @ Ohio Legends | NEW CASTLE 7, OHIO 5
New Castle never trailed in this game but had three ties in the game and three times it held two-goal leads. Barry Pedersen had two goals and an assist to leads the Ducks, while Marian Stastny had a goal and three assists. Billy Smith stopped 29 shots to pick up his 20th win of the season. The Ducks were efficient on special teams, scoring both times they had the man-advantage and stopping three of the four power plays for the Legends. |
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Ohio Legends | PITTSBURGH 6, OHIO 4
Pittsburgh only trailed once in this contest, which was tied twice and saw the Spirit have a pair of two-goal leads. John Anderson scored twice for Ohio, while Wilf Paiement had a goal and two assists for Pittsburgh. The Legends outshot Pittsburgh, 32-17. However, the stellar netminding of Rogie Vachon and his 28 saves was too much for Ohio to overcome. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Bring on the 1982-83 season! |
North Carolina 89’ers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Pittsburgh and Syracuse visit NC this week. |
Syracuse Bulldogs @ North Carolina 89’ers | Before 2 minutes had passed it was 2-0. Before 5 minutes were up it was tied. What got off to a whacky start ended up being a close game. WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Bad week man. |
Charlotte Dynamo | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte, eliminated from the playoffs and slumping down the stretch, plays for pride this week, with three home games against three teams with winning records that are all outside its division — Mackinac Island, New Castle and Chicago. |
Mackinac Island Moose @ Charlotte Dynamo | Mackinac Island scores the first three goals of the game within 16 minutes and its goalie Gilles Meloche turns away 37 shots as the Moose prevails 4-3. Moose goals from forwards Tom Lysiak, Blake Dunlop and Bill Barber within a six-minute stretch between the 10 minute and 16-minute mark of the first period propelled the Moose to the early lead. The Dynamo, who outshot the Moose 40-35, woke up with three goals in the latter two periods but it was too little too late. A Dave Hunter goal for Charlotte 5 minutes in the third closed the gap to 4-3 but Meloche shut things down from there and saved 15 shots in the third period. |
New Castle Ducks @ Charlotte Dynamo | In a back and forth affair with four lead changes, New Castle broke a 4-4 tie with two consecutive third-period goals from 50+ goal scorers Barry Pederson and Rick Middleton and ultimately defeated the Dynamo 6-5. Middleton provided the backbreaker 17:07 into the third period on the power play that helped the Ducks soar 6-4 and that proved to be the game-winning goal. Charlotte’s Normand Leveille answered just 13 seconds later to close the scoring at the final of 6-5, but the Dynamo could not capitalize on an extra-man opportunity from there. Tony Esposito, under siege all night, managed 43 saves for the losers, while Michel Larocque was the winning goalie with 36 saves. Middleton and Gilbert Perreault led their teams with two goals each. |
Chicago Underground @ Charlotte Dynamo | In perhaps its most heartbreaking loss of the season, the Dynamo overcome a 5-2 deficit with a late rush of four unanswered goals only to cough up a 6-5 lead in the last minutes of the game and fall 7-6. The two even-strength goals created by numerous Hall of Famers on the Underground side, and scored in the last four minutes of play, turned out to be Charlotte’s undoing. Denis Savard knotted the game at 6-6 with 3:11 left on the clock and exactly a minute later the game-winner was knocked in by Clark Gillies and assisted by teammate Mike Bossy. Charlotte, trailing by the 5-2 deficit, had given the Underground a scare: consecutive goals by Mike Rogers, Dale Hawerchuk, Charlie Simmer and Gilbert Perreault, starting at the 19:35 mark of the second period, erased Chicago’s seemingly comfortable lead before the Underground pulled it out late. Chicago’s Pierre Moundou and Simmer led their respective teams with two goals each. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Dynamo, while playing competitive, lose three heartbreaking one-goal games at home and is unable to attain even a point. In the process, Charlotte further demonstrates it is not quite ready for prime time, and it is apparent the team needs to add more than a few pieces at defense and goalie to have hopes of contending in 1982-83. |
Delray Alpha | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Delray has one home game against North Carolina |
North Carolina 89’ers @ Delray Alpha | NC 4 – Delray 4
North Carolina jumps out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first period behind goals from Goulet (31), Payne (30) and Jarvis (21). Delray answers back in the second period with 3 goals from Fotiu (1), Hunter (8) and Taylor (30). In the third Payne (32) scores again for NC with 1:03 left but Gainey scores with :01 left to earn the tie for Delray |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Delray manages a tie in their lone home game |
