From then on it was all NC, scoring 4 in the first and adding 2 in the second to put it out of reach. Frycer scored his second of the game but it wasn’t enough. | Mackinac Island Moose @ North Carolina 89’ers | This game was hard to watch. Mackinac came out firing, scoring 8 in the first period, including 4 in a 2:02 span. Maclean picked up a hat trick, as did Smyl, who scored his in the first period and added a 4th later in the game.
Fans were left wondering why coach Allen left a clearly humiliated Soetaert in for the entire game. When asked afterward about reports that Soetaert stormed past reporters after the game saying ‘It’s my last game in Carolina,’ coach Allen laughed and said ‘he’s no Patrick Roy,’ leaving those gathered, who hadn’t yet heard of the 17-year-old goaltender, scratching their heads. FINAL SCORE: Mackinac Island 12, North Caroline 3. THREE STARS: Melanson MAC 23 saves |
| Charlestown Chiefs @ North Carolina 89’ers | An exciting back and forth game that went down to the wire. Trailing 4-2 in the third, Charlestown comes back to tie it up, with their 4th coming with :45 seconds left in the game with the extra attacker. Back at full strength, Naslund scores the winner 23 seconds later, clinching the victory with :12 to play. Not Ohio, 4-1 losers in this affair. Paul MacLean netted a pair of first period goals, to pace the Moose. Mackinac Island held a massive 35-11 edge in chances and only a great effort from Steve Weeks kept this from being a blowout. Rollie Melanson picked up the win with 24 saves. |
| Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Ohio Legends | Ohio 4, St. Clair Shores 2
John Anderson’s goal 75 seconds into the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Legends on their way to the win. Mark Pavelich’s power-play goal with 55 seconds to play closed out the scoring. Ohio held the Saints to ten shots in the victory. Gordie Roberts had three assists for the Legends, as Glen Hanlon got the win with eight stops. |
| Portland Sasquatch | PORTLAND 4, OHIO 1
Following a scoreless first period that featured THREE shots on goal (OH 2, PO 1), the Sasquatch reeled off a pair of goals 33 seconds apart early in the middle frame, to salt away the game. The shots battle went to Ohio, 20-15, as Reggie Lemelin stopped 19 shots (and posted a perfect 10.0 rating!). The Legends had opportunities that were wasted — going zero-for-six on the power play. |

| Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 5, Saints 0 – Gilles Meloche shows he still has the chops to be a factor on this team, and he is perfect in net, stopping all 32 SOG the visitors send at him.
In the meantime, the Moose skaters put equal pressure on Liut, 31 SOG in all. 3 of those sneak past in the first 2 periods, all even strength, Propp, Tambellini and Lysiak, to make it 3-0 after 2. In the 3rd period, as the Moose wait for retaliation, the Saints don’t act like no Saints, racking up 4 penalties, and the Moose put the icing on the cake, adding 2 PP goals, Smyl and MacLean, to make the final 5-0 1st star – Meloche 32 saves, shutout |

The Ducks had a 3-0 lead at the 44-second mark of the second period – and what looked like a New Castle blowout almost turned into a Syracuse win, as the Bulldogs rallied for FOUR unanswered goals before Barry Pederson tied it for the Ducks. New Castle jumped out to the early lead on goals by Bobby Clarke (4), Steve Bozek (2) and Ryan Walter (10). Then Syracuse got on the board at 14:17 of the second when Reed Larson (2) scored a power-play goal to make it 3-1. With one second left in the period, Neil Broten (7) from Lafleur made it 3-2. And then after only 1:07 of the third Perry Turnbull lit the lamp again for Syracuse, his 6th of the season, and the game was tied. A little more than 3 minutes later, rookie sensation Brian Bellows scored his 11th and Syracuse led 4-3. Barry Pederson, from Middleton, and Walter put his 11th past Richard Sevigny at 6:39 to tie the game. And that’s how it ended as a 4-4 tie. Both teams were flying in the third period as Syracuse outshot New Castle 16-15 in the period. In the game the Ducks had a 40-30 edge in SOF THREE STARS: Sevigny made 36 saves. Ryan Walker won 24 of 29 faceoffs for the Ducks.. |

| Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers | The Rangers seem to be a mixed up team. Can’t finish games, or can’t start them, but either way, they’ve just managed to stay about the .500 water. This game fits the mold. Pittsburgh started 1st (Larmer) and end the period with a 2-1 lead. DeBlois netted for the Rangers, and Pettersson got the 2nd Spirit goal. Then less than a minute into period 2, Steen scores for the Spirit, and that was it for the period and the Spirit skate off with a 3-1 lead after 2.Then the fateful 3rd period – only this time – it was a shocker for CapJack as they put 5 biscuits in the basket. The outburst included PP goals from MacMillan and Shutt, and an empty netter by DeBlois, and goals from Crowder and Lofthouse. So woohee, we’re happy. With just 2:09 on the clock, Mark Johnson gets the equalizer and the final score is 4-4. Ties do suck, but it sure feels better when you’re the one that gets the late tying goal. |

| Mackinac Island Moose @ Texas Brahmas | The powerful Moose come in for the 2nd game of the week and oh what a game we had. It was another fight-filled contest as 12 fighting majors and 2 game misconducts were handed out. In between fights, the teams were able to trade goals in the first and go into the break at 1-1. Texas scored 2 of the 3 goals in the second and things were looking good for the Brahmas. Mackinac scored 2 goals in less than a minute to take the lead early in the 3rd and the fans started to get anxious. Texas tied the game at the 14:28 mark on Nilsson’s 14th of the year. Mackinac regains the lead at the 18:03 mark and Bannerman heads to the bench. Texas scores an empty-net goal to tie the game 18 seconds later and Bannerman heads back to the crease! Texas scores the apparent game-winner 36 seconds later on a goal by Jonsson and Meloche heads to the bench for the Cardinals. With 36 seconds left Kurri scores to tie the game and the contest ends in a tie. |

| WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte came into the week third in the Patrick Division and decisively mediocre with a few near-even records: close to .500 at 7-6-1 and also a tally of 53 goals scored and 52 goals against. The squad needed a boost as it hosted two division opponents with strong MWOTHL pedigrees in Cap Jack and Pittsburgh. |
| CapJack Rangers @ Charlotte Dynamo | The Dynamo was fired up as it entered last year’s MWOTHL finalist and scored all three goals in the first period en route to a 6-2 win. The first-period goals by Tom Fergus, Mike Rogers, and Glenn Anderson were enough to take this contest and the Dynamo ultimate chased Rangers goalie Dan Bouchard who surrendered all six Charlotte goals in the first two periods before being lifted in the third in favor of Chico Resch.
Cap Jack got an early second-period goal from left-winger Steve Shutt, but the Dynamo answered with two goals minutes later from Pete Ihnacak and Rogers, to seize a 5-1 lead prior to the halfway mark and put this game away. Three stars (all from Charlotte) GWG: Glenn Anderson. Notables: The Rangers actually outshot the Dynamo 29-28 but Charlotte goalie Andy Moog (27 S) outplayed Bouchard (just 17 saves while letting in six). |
| Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlotte Dynamo | Hosting the two-time MWOTHL Champions, the Dynamo were able to survive feisty a comeback effort by a Pittsburgh team that lived up to its team nickname, before the home team notched a pair of third-period goals and ultimately prevailed, 5-3. Trailing 3-0, Pittsburgh fought back in the second period with three goals — including the latter two from Joran Pettersson that tied the game at 3 entering the third period. The game-winning goal came from Glenn Anderson with 14:04 left in the game and Dale Hawerchuk scored his second goal of the evening with 5:14 left to play, for crucial insurance.
Three stars: Notable: LW Bruce Crowder accounted for Pittsburgh’s first goal. Tony Esposito records 28 saves to best Pelle Lindbergh (25 saves in defeat). The Spirit were 0 for 5 on the power play and outshot Charlotte 31-30. Gilbert Perreault opened the scoring for Charlotte on a short-handed goal during the Spirit’s first PP opportunity in the first period. |

Then Rota (9) scores at 18:52 of the 3rd to put Portland up 6-5. But wait! Ray Bourque (7) beats Brodeur with FOUR SECONDS remaining to force the 6-6 tie. As noted in my email, Lanny McDonald was given a 2 game suspension. Not sure that should be turned on; if it is, I need to know how to handle it.
