North Carolina 89’ers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: NC has three games at home this week, including two against division leaders and the third against a division rival.
Ohio Legends @ North Carolina 89’ers Frycer starts things off early for Ohio, scoring at 3:41 of the first. From then on it was all NC, scoring 4 in the first and adding 2 in the second to put it out of reach. Frycer scored his second of the game but it wasn’t enough. FINAL SCORE: NC 6 OHI 2
THREE STARS:
Ogrodnikck NC 3G 1A
Goulet NC 2G
Frycer OHI 2GHanlon OHI 16 saves
Fuhr NC 24 saves
Mackinac Island Moose @ North Carolina 89’ers This game was hard to watch. Mackinac came out firing, scoring 8 in the first period, including 4 in a 2:02 span. Maclean picked up a hat trick, as did Smyl, who scored his in the first period and added a 4th later in the game.

Fans were left wondering why coach Allen left a clearly humiliated Soetaert in for the entire game. When asked afterward about reports that Soetaert stormed past reporters after the game saying ‘It’s my last game in Carolina,’ coach Allen laughed and said ‘he’s no Patrick Roy,’ leaving those gathered, who hadn’t yet heard of the 17-year-old goaltender, scratching their heads. FINAL SCORE: Mackinac Island 12, North Caroline 3.

THREE STARS:
Smyl MAC 4G
MacLean MAC 3G
O’Connell 6A (!!!)

Melanson MAC 23 saves
Soetaert NC 29 saves

Charlestown Chiefs @ North Carolina 89’ers An exciting back and forth game that went down to the wire. Trailing 4-2 in the third, Charlestown comes back to tie it up, with their 4th coming with :45 seconds left in the game with the extra attacker. Back at full strength, Naslund scores the winner 23 seconds later, clinching the victory with :12 to play. FINAL SCORE: NC 5, Charlestown 4
THREE STARS:
MacDonald CHA – 2G 1A
Naslund NC – 1G 1A
Broten NC – 1G 1ARiggin CHA – 30 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: One blowout win, one blowout loss, and one close game. Only in ActionPC…
 Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends play host to two tough Adams Division foes and welcome in Portland and that Gretzky kid for games this week.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Ohio Legends Who is going to beat Mackinac Island this year?

Not Ohio, 4-1 losers in this affair. Paul MacLean netted a pair of first period goals, to pace the Moose. Mackinac Island held a massive 35-11 edge in chances and only a great effort from Steve Weeks kept this from being a blowout.

Rollie Melanson picked up the win with 24 saves.

Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Ohio Legends Ohio 4, St. Clair Shores 2

John Anderson’s goal 75 seconds into the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Legends on their way to the win. Mark Pavelich’s power-play goal with 55 seconds to play closed out the scoring. Ohio held the Saints to ten shots in the victory. Gordie Roberts had three assists for the Legends, as Glen Hanlon got the win with eight stops.

Portland Sasquatch PORTLAND 4, OHIO 1

Following a scoreless first period that featured THREE shots on goal (OH 2, PO 1), the Sasquatch reeled off a pair of goals 33 seconds apart early in the middle frame, to salt away the game. The shots battle went to Ohio, 20-15, as Reggie Lemelin stopped 19 shots (and posted a perfect 10.0 rating!). The Legends had opportunities that were wasted — going zero-for-six on the power play.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A win and two losses at home (and another loss at North Carolina), make it a 1-3 week. Holding onto second place in the Adams Division may be quite the task — although it does not look like the Moose will lose ten games this year!
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game this week on the Island. Occasional rain mixed with snow now out here, and the winds are picking up. The rough ferry ride out for anybody. Saint Claire Shores is no stranger to these waters and brings a feisty group.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, Saints 0 – Gilles Meloche shows he still has the chops to be a factor on this team, and he is perfect in net, stopping all 32 SOG the visitors send at him.

In the meantime, the Moose skaters put equal pressure on Liut, 31 SOG in all. 3 of those sneak past in the first 2 periods, all even strength, Propp, Tambellini and Lysiak, to make it 3-0 after 2. In the 3rd period, as the Moose wait for retaliation, the Saints don’t act like no Saints, racking up 4 penalties, and the Moose put the icing on the cake, adding 2 PP goals, Smyl and MacLean, to make the final 5-0

1st star – Meloche 32 saves, shutout
2nd – MacLean 1G 3pts
3rd – Lysiak 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Excellent defensive performance by the Moose, winning their only home game this week with a shutout.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ducks have only one home game this week – against division rival Syracuse
Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks SYR 4 NEW 4

The Ducks had a 3-0 lead at the 44-second mark of the second period – and what looked like a New Castle blowout almost turned into a Syracuse win, as the Bulldogs rallied for FOUR unanswered goals before Barry Pederson tied it for the Ducks.

New Castle jumped out to the early lead on goals by Bobby Clarke (4), Steve Bozek (2) and Ryan Walter (10). Then Syracuse got on the board at 14:17 of the second when Reed Larson (2) scored a power-play goal to make it 3-1. With one second left in the period, Neil Broten (7) from Lafleur made it 3-2. And then after only 1:07 of the third Perry Turnbull lit the lamp again for Syracuse, his 6th of the season, and the game was tied. A little more than 3 minutes later, rookie sensation Brian Bellows scored his 11th and Syracuse led 4-3. Barry Pederson, from Middleton, and Walter put his 11th past Richard Sevigny at 6:39 to tie the game. And that’s how it ended as a 4-4 tie. Both teams were flying in the third period as Syracuse outshot New Castle 16-15 in the period. In the game the Ducks had a 40-30 edge in SOF

THREE STARS:

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 home game. A tie. It’s like kissing your sister & she’s ugly.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A quick week at home with 1 game while 3 on the road – all tough ones so hopefully we can dispense with the Pittsburgh team (although there are rumors they’ve been discussing some roster changes between them – or so the rumors in CapJack land thought)…
Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers The Rangers seem to be a mixed up team. Can’t finish games, or can’t start them, but either way, they’ve just managed to stay about the .500 water. This game fits the mold.
Pittsburgh started 1st (Larmer) and end the period with a 2-1 lead. DeBlois netted for the Rangers, and Pettersson got the 2nd Spirit goal.
Then less than a minute into period 2, Steen scores for the Spirit, and that was it for the period and the Spirit skate off with a 3-1 lead after 2.Then the fateful 3rd period – only this time – it was a shocker for CapJack as they put 5 biscuits in the basket. The outburst included PP goals from MacMillan and Shutt, and an empty netter by DeBlois, and goals from Crowder and Lofthouse. So woohee, we’re happy. It was also a game we actually took a lot of shots!
STARS: (all CAP)
1. DeBlois 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Crowder 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Shutt 1 goal, 1 assist
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Make the most of their 1 game homestand with a big win…..
Catoctin Cardinals
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Cardinals have a 2 game homestand and are looking to push towards getting into the divisional race!
Charlestown Chiefs @ Catoctin Cardinals CHA 3 CAT 2

Catoctin scored twice in 38 seconds to open the second period but allowed 3 unanswered goals to let the game slip away.
Fun stat of the game: Craig Ludwig was awarded a penalty shot, not exactly the guy I wanted to get that chance…

Syracuse Bulldogs @ Catoctin Cardinals SYR 5 CAT 7

A wild back and forth game that saw plenty of action if you love goals! The Cardinals added the game-winner a minute and 13 seconds after Syracuse tied it. The empty netter was just to make it look better for us in the papers.
Fun stat of the game: The Cardinals had more scoring chances (26) than shots (25)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The one that got away and a crazy 12 goal contest sum up the week at home for the Cardinals. Hopefully, we steal some wins on the road.

Anyone else having the issue where you have to close out and restart the game to play your next game?

Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints host one game this week against North Carolina.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Saint Clair Shores Saints The Saints get on the board first with a Wayne Babych goal. It’s his 6th of the season. North Carolina scores two consecutive goals to close out the period. Fox and Gardner score.

NC 2, SCS 1 after 1.

In the second, Wickenheiser scores on a power-play goal.

In the third, Sutter scores for the Saints to make it closer. Smith then scores for the 89’ers to put the game away.

North Carolina 4 SCS 2

1st star – Smith
2nd star – Gardner
3rd star – Fox

WEEKLY SUMMARY: North Carolina defeats St. Clair Shores, 4-2.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: CapJack and St. Claire invade Brooklyn this week
CapJack Rangers @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Mark Johnson gets the home team in front around the 4-minute mark, then Anton Statsny sets up a pair of power-play scores to open a 3-0 first period lead. More than enough for Brian Hayward, as he turns aside all 28 shots he faces to record the Rat’s first shutout of the season. Final score, Harbor Rats 5, Rangers 0.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Saints open a 2-0 lead in the first and remain in front, 3-2 at the end of two periods of play. Bobby Smith nets the tying goal for the Rats with 7 and a half minutes remaining, but 3 minutes later Ken Morrow gives St. Clair Shores the lead again. With just 2:09 on the clock, Mark Johnson gets the equalizer and the final score is 4-4. Ties do suck, but it sure feels better when you’re the one that gets the late tying goal.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 of a possible 4 points at home this week, with our first shutout of the season
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas has three home games vs New Castle, Syracuse, and Charlotte
New Castle Ducks @ Dallas Drakes Drakes come out strong with 3 goals in the first 6:40 and take that lead to the first intermission but New Castle took the game over from there. After 4 goals in the second period, the Ducks go on to win 7-5.

Portland responded with three goals of their own from Risebrough (5), Ciccarelli (8/9) as the teams headed into the first intermission with Texas leading 5-3

Portland’s Crossman (2) finds the back of the net 4 minutes into the 2nd period to pull Portland within one but Nilsson (13) scores for Texas to keep the lead 6-4 after two

In the third period, Portland gets a PP goal from Foligno (3) to cut the lead back to 1 but once again Texas responds two minutes later with another goal from Vaive (10) to extend the lead to 7-5. At the 9-minute mark, Ciccarelli (10) scores his third of the game but Portland was unable to tie the game and loses 7-6

Star #1 – Ciccarelli hat trick

Catoctin Cardinals @ Portland Sasquatch Portland opens the scoring in the first period on a goal from Gringas (3) to take a 1-0 first period intermission lead. Catoctin gets a 2nd-period goal 23 seconds into the period from Kehoe (7) and adds another goal from Flockhart (8) on a penalty shot to lead 2-1. Star #1 -Flockhart 1 goal
Star #2 – Jensen 22 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Basically in a tie starting the week in the division Portland loses both home games in disappointing fashion
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The two-time Stanley Cup Champs are a shadow of their former selves…
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Pittsburgh Spirit Brooklyn comes in and outlasts the Spirit in a 6-5 “shootout” as Gustafsson (7) completes his hat trick with 25 seconds left to lift Brooklyn to victory.
New Castle Ducks @ Pittsburgh Spirit The Ducks and Spirit kiss their sisters in a 2-2 tie thanks to a last-minute goal by Middleton (10) at 19:38.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two home games, two last-minute goals by the opposition determining the outcome.

Again… a shadow of our former selves. Still entertaining trades for draft picks and future help.

Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Struggling Texas hosts two games this week as Catoctin and league-leading Mackinac Island come to town.
Catoctin Cardinals @ Texas Brahmas Catoctin scores a couple of first period goals to take a 2-0 lead into the period break. Texas storms back in the 2nd, scoring two to tie it up heading into the 3rd. Beck scores for Catoctin 43 seconds into the period as the Cardinals regained the lead, only to see Texas tie the score with under 5 minutes left. Flockhart score at the 18:44 mark to send the home team fans home disappointed….again.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Texas Brahmas The powerful Moose come in for the 2nd game of the week and oh what a game we had. It was another fight-filled contest as 12 fighting majors and 2 game misconducts were handed out. In between fights, the teams were able to trade goals in the first and go into the break at 1-1. Texas scored 2 of the 3 goals in the second and things were looking good for the Brahmas. Mackinac scored 2 goals in less than a minute to take the lead early in the 3rd and the fans started to get anxious. Texas tied the game at the 14:28 mark on Nilsson’s 14th of the year. Mackinac regains the lead at the 18:03 mark and Bannerman heads to the bench. Texas scores an empty-net goal to tie the game 18 seconds later and Bannerman heads back to the crease! Texas scores the apparent game-winner 36 seconds later on a goal by Jonsson and Meloche heads to the bench for the Cardinals. With 36 seconds left Kurri scores to tie the game and the contest ends in a tie.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 0-1-1. Hey, it’s better than 0-2
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte came into the week third in the Patrick Division and decisively mediocre with a few near-even records: close to .500 at 7-6-1 and also a tally of 53 goals scored and 52 goals against. The squad needed a boost as it hosted two division opponents with strong MWOTHL pedigrees in Cap Jack and Pittsburgh.
CapJack Rangers @ Charlotte Dynamo The Dynamo was fired up as it entered last year’s MWOTHL finalist and scored all three goals in the first period en route to a 6-2 win. The first-period goals by Tom Fergus, Mike Rogers, and Glenn Anderson were enough to take this contest and the Dynamo ultimate chased Rangers goalie Dan Bouchard who surrendered all six Charlotte goals in the first two periods before being lifted in the third in favor of Chico Resch.

Cap Jack got an early second-period goal from left-winger Steve Shutt, but the Dynamo answered with two goals minutes later from Pete Ihnacak and Rogers, to seize a 5-1 lead prior to the halfway mark and put this game away.

Three stars (all from Charlotte)
Star 1: CHD Rogers with his two goals
Star 2: Perreault 1 G, 2 Points
Star 3: Ihnacak 1 G

GWG: Glenn Anderson.

Notables: The Rangers actually outshot the Dynamo 29-28 but Charlotte goalie Andy Moog (27 S) outplayed Bouchard (just 17 saves while letting in six).

Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlotte Dynamo Hosting the two-time MWOTHL Champions, the Dynamo were able to survive feisty a comeback effort by a Pittsburgh team that lived up to its team nickname, before the home team notched a pair of third-period goals and ultimately prevailed, 5-3. Trailing 3-0, Pittsburgh fought back in the second period with three goals — including the latter two from Joran Pettersson that tied the game at 3 entering the third period. The game-winning goal came from Glenn Anderson with 14:04 left in the game and Dale Hawerchuk scored his second goal of the evening with 5:14 left to play, for crucial insurance.

Three stars:
Star 1: CHD Anderson 2 G (including the GWG) and 4 points
Star 2: CHD Hawerchuk (2g)
Star 3: PIT (Pettersson 2g)

Notable: LW Bruce Crowder accounted for Pittsburgh’s first goal. Tony Esposito records 28 saves to best Pelle Lindbergh (25 saves in defeat). The Spirit were 0 for 5 on the power play and outshot Charlotte 31-30. Gilbert Perreault opened the scoring for Charlotte on a short-handed goal during the Spirit’s first PP opportunity in the first period.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte gets two uplifting division wins that are sparked by game-winning goals from Glenn Anderson in each. Andy Moog and Tony Esposito shine for Charlotte in the nets on back to back nights.
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games vs Texas and Portland.
Texas Brahmas @ Charlestown Chiefs Texas takes a 6-4 lead into the early 3rd when Ray Bourque (5) and Tony McKegney (7) score a pair of SHORTIES just 11 seconds a part – WOW!

Just like that, we’re tied up 6-6.

Then 2 minutes later, Korn (2) scores on the PP to give Texas a 7-6 lead that Palmateer holds.

Clint Malarchuk’s debut for the Chiefs isn’t a good one, as he’s beaten on 7 of 28 shots.

Then Rota (9) scores at 18:52 of the 3rd to put Portland up 6-5.

But wait!

Ray Bourque (7) beats Brodeur with FOUR SECONDS remaining to force the 6-6 tie.

As noted in my email, Lanny McDonald was given a 2 game suspension. Not sure that should be turned on; if it is, I need to know how to handle it.
