CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Patrick division race is heating up and the Rangers are trying to stay in step with the Harbor Rats – right now they lead in points, but Brooklyn has a few games in hand – so technically it’s only a paper lead for the Rangers at the moment. This week we have 2 games at home and both are tough opponents – New Castle – leading the Norris division, and Portland, leading the Smythe division. How did we get so lucky as to host 2 division leaders in the same week????
New Castle Ducks @ CapJack Rangers The game opens and the Rangers look lost – Clarke scores for the Ducks just a minute into the game. Shortly thereafter, Lundholm gets called for cross-checking, and Tardif puts the biscuit in the basket for a Ducks PP goal and a 2-0 lead (less than 7 minutes into the game). BUT – Rangers wake up some and Daoust scores a couple of minutes later and it’s 2-1 Ducks after 1.

2nd period opens and the enforcer Cochrane (league leader in penalty minutes no less!) goes off for a cross-checking penalty – refs are being strict. Stastny responds with the Duck’s 2nd PP goal they grab a big 3-1 lead. Well, big is relative because this really wakes up the Rangers, and Trottier and Lundholm score to tie it up and then Walter goes off late for slashing for the Ducks, and Daoust scores a PP goal for his 2nd goal of the game and the Rangers grabbed the lead 4-3.

So we head to the 3rd – the next goal is going to be big! 5 minutes in a Ray Allison gets called for slashing – ugh. We’ve already given up to PP goals and Stastny makes it 3 as he scores his 2nd PP goal of the game and it’s tied with 14 minutes to go. Then the big penalty comes and it’s to the Duck’s Savard as he’s sent off for major for boarding. Man, the announcers were having a field day with that one and even noted that Alan Raylseburg was upset with that call – but the ref called as he saw it! Well, 5 minutes of PP – and the Rangers capitalize – but only once, but once it was – as Cloutier deflects one past Smith to put CapJack back up 5-4. Rangers are holding them off but it’s always a different game in the final 2 minutes. And sure enough, the Rangers Bloomqvist is nailed for hooking with 1:26 to go. OK PP coming up (will they bring in the extra attacker as well?).
Yes, 1:07 and the Ducks gain control, Smith leaves, and all you see for the next 67 seconds is Resch saves, Resch saves, Resch saves it, Resch saves. (This time he gloves it with 22 seconds left). Faceoff, Pederson shoots – Resch saves, rebounds goes to Kasper – shoots, Ray Allison blocks it and the game ends. 5 saves and 2 blocked shots in the final 67 seconds and 3 legitimate scoring chances), whew, and WOW! The final sees CapJack skating to the locker room 5-4 winners!
STARS:
1. NCD – Stastny 2 goals, 1 assist
2. CAP – Daoust 2 goals
3. CAP – Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist

Portland Sasquatch @ CapJack Rangers Well after the hard-fought contest with New Castle, do the Rangers have anything left for the Sasquatch?
Not in the 1st period… But then the Sasquatch didn’t have much either, BUT they did come alive with 2 minutes left when Dale Hunter found the back of the goal for a 1-0 Portland lead after 1.Then the Sasquatch packed up their gear and went home. They seemed to forget there were 3 periods in this game and the Rangers took advantage scoring 2 in the 2nd – Ray Allison and Shutt (PP goal) and a 2-1 lead after 2.Then in the 3rd, Trottier (PP), Daoust, and Mike Allison score 3 unanswered goals and the Rangers skate off 5-1 winners. Portland actually did outshoot the Rangers (29-24) but Garrett blocked the nets quite well. Rangers kept Gretzky limited to 2 shots on goal – he did well winning 15 of 23 faceoffs but was not much of a factor beyond that.
STARS (all CAP)
1. Trottier 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Daoust 1 goal
3. Allison (take your pick) 1 goal
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers have a very nice home week with big wins over New Castle and Portland. Seems like the new blood is mixing well and gelling!
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two teams fighting to stay out of the cellar in their respective divisions collide at Legends Arena, as the Syracuse Bulldogs roll into town.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Ohio Legends Anders Kallur’s power-play goal with a little more than two minutes remaining was the final tally in a 7-7 tie between Syracuse and Ohio. Perry Turnbull put the Bulldogs in position to win the game with a pair of third-period goals.

The high-scoring affair saw five lead changes and the game was even after every period (1-1 after one, 4-4 after two, and 7-7 at the end).

Syracuse held the upper hand on shots, 35-30, and 13 different players scored goals (Turnbull was the lone multi-goal scorer). The Legends held the upper hand on the power play, cashing in on three of six opportunities, while the Bulldogs went one for five.

Dan Bouchard stopped 28 shots for Ohio (.800 save percentage) and Greg Millen turned away 23 shots (.767 save percentage).

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The lone home game of the weekend sent the Ohio fans home dazed. At this stage, a point in the standings is a gift from the Gods. Missing out on two points, a curse. The dreaded kissing of the sister made us realize just how homely she truly is…..
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week for the Ducks – against the Pittsburgh Spirit. New Castle continues to battle for the division lead
Pittsburgh Spirit @ New Castle Ducks NCD 5 PIT 3 The Ducks are outshot 44-26 but Don Edwards comes up with 41 saves to lead New Castle to victory. After a scoreless first period, Ryan Walter put the Ducks ahead at the 26-second mark of the second period. Pittsburgh tied it midway through the period when Darryl Sittler beat Edwards. Four minutes later, the Ducks regained the lead as Barry Pederson got his 31st goal of the year, beating Pelle Lindbergh.
Leading 2-1 going to the third, the Ducks quickly lost the lead when Dvorak scored unassisted at 1:53 of the third. 2-2! The Ducks struck back quickly as Pederson scored 12 seconds later and Bobby Clarke 2 minutes after that to give New Castle a 4-2 lead. Steve Larmer scored on a breakaway to make it 4-3 with 13 minutes left but the Ducks again came right back as Walter scored – a minute later – his second of the game to make it 5-3. The Spirit pressed after that, peppering Smith with 17 shots in the third period alone but New Castle held on for the win.THREE STARS:
1- NEW Pederson 2G 2A
2- NEW Walter 2G 1 A
3- NEW Rick Middleton 3 AThe Walter-Pederson-Middleton line continues to dominate for New Castle. Newly acquired Defenseman Doug Halward had a solid game as he logged 27 minutes, had 4 SOG, 2 Assists and a PLUS 3 +/-.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get the maximum 2 points as they improve to 15-10-12-42 as they continue to battle with Chicago for first place in the Norris Division
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: one game in Brooklyn this week, as the Moose, come to town
Mackinac Island Moose @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats The Moose have only lost 2 games all season. The Harbor Rats dropped both previous contests by a goal. Early in this contest, Brooklyn puts Mackinac Island on the power play. That is the league’s top-ranked power play. And they convert with Tom Lysiak netting his 23rd goal of the season for a 1-0 Moose lead. That lead holds until Mark Johnson evens the score off a faceoff win in the Moose zone 6:54 into the 2nd. So we head to the final twenty minutes in a tie game. And less than 4 minutes in, Paul Reinhart finishes off a 2 on 1 breakaway to put the Rats in front 2-1. Brooklyn clings to that one goal until Colin Campbell heads to the penalty box with just over 3 minutes remaining. Then the Rats, the league’s 2nd ranked power play, convert on a blast from Reinhart, his second goal of the game, for a 3-1 lead. After that, it was all Brian Hayward as the Brooklyn netminder stopped all 12 Moose shots in the 3rd period to hand the Harbor Rats a win over the league’s best team! The loss was the first loss of the season for Mackinac Island goalie Gilles Meloche, who fell to 13-1-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A win against the top team in the league will always leave the home crowd feeling good!

Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game south of the Red River sees Patrick leading CapJack come to town to take on the Smythe trailing Brahmas.
CapJack Rangers @ Texas Brahmas The game started like most games for Texas, with Maloney scoring for CapJack 58 seconds into the game. A five minute major on Texas set up CapJack for a big opening period, but McCourt scores a shortie to tie the game. Crowder and Allison score for Cap on the remaining power play time to give them a 3-1 lead. Nilsson gets one back for the Brahmas on the PP and the 1st ends 3-2 Cap. Cloutier scores a pair for Cap surrounding a Brahmas goal by Ruotsalainen to send the game to the 2nd intermission 5-3 CapJacks. The 3rd is relatively uneventful, with the loan goal by Nilsson bringing the Brahmas within one, but Garrett slams the door and the CapJacks win 5-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Bad, as usual
North Carolina 89’ers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The 89ers welcome a couple of Norris division teams to town this week.
Chicago Underground @ North Carolina 89’ers Goulet and Naslund each score two for NC but it’s not enough. FINAL SCORE: Chicago 5 NC 4
THREE STARS:
1. Houston (CHI) – 2G
2. Goulet (NC) – 2G

Peeters CHI – 19 saves
Soetaert NC – 28 saves
New Castle Ducks @ North Carolina 89’ers Two goals by Naslund within the last 2:00 are the difference. FINAL SCORE: NC 3 New Castle 1
THREE STARS:
1. Naslund (NC) – 2G 1A
2. Fuhr (NC) – 25 saves
3. Chouinard (NC) – 1G
Smith (New Castle) – 28 saves
WEEKLY SUMMARY: NC is able to split two very close games. Any .500 stretch is going to help NC’s winning percentage so we’ll take it.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, slumping badly, had only one win in its last 7 games when it hosted Syracuse and Texas following this holiday break.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Charlotte Dynamo For the second time in as many meetings, these two inter-divisional squads played to a 3-3 tie (they also skated to a 3-3 draw on November 27). This time, the Dynamo’s bid for victory was thwarted by a Neal Broten Syracuse goal with 1:02 left in the game.

Tom Fergus was the top star in the game for Charlotte — his goal had temporarily put the Dynamo ahead, 3-2, with 3:30 left to play before Broten and Syracuse, answered right back.

Texas Brahmas @ Charlotte Dynamo In a back-and-forth slugfest, a power-play goal by Dave Taylor, his second tally of the contest, lifted the Brahmas to a 7-6 victory. The Brahmas benefited mightily from the power play, converting four of five opportunities on the man advantage. Taylor’s game-winning goal game came with just under eight minutes left to play. Texas Defenseman Reijo Ruotsalainen was the second star behind Taylor (1 G 2 points).
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Dynamo falter in the third period of these last two home games to stifle late attempts at victory — and this team’s wheels are spinning (it’s frustrating so apologies for the short writeups!)
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Drakes continue to try up the team’s defense. Will the added players continue to help.
Portland Sasquatch @ Dallas Drakes Patrick Sundstrom scores 17 seconds in as the Drakes come out firing. Guy Carbonneau ties the game for the Sasquatch and the game stays knotted at 1 to end the period. In the second period Kelly, Duguay, and Joe Mullen netted goals for the Drakes to give Dallas a 4-1 lead at the end of the second period. Portland comes back with two goals in the first half of the third period with the second a beautiful redirection by Mike Foligno of a shot from Doug Riseborough. The Sasquatch continued to pour it on and Morris Lukowich had an open net only to be robbed by Ken Ellacott making his first start of the season. On the very next shift, Patrick Sundstrom put one by Richard Brodeur and the Drakes put an empty netter in to win 6-3.
Catoctin Cardinals @ Dallas Drakes This game had massive shifts in momentum, and the Drakes started the game with all of it. Goals by Bobby Gould, Joey Mullen, and Illka Sinisalo had them up 3-0 at the end of 1. In the second period the Cardinals come out firing and with goals from Butch Goring and Ron Flockhart, they were in striking distance at the end of 2. At 2:36 into the third period, Mark Messier finished off a 2-1 with a great pass from Rick Kehoe and knotted the game at 3. The Cardinals continued to buzz until Ken Linesman beat Al Jensen 5-Hole and then the wheels fell off completely for the Cardinals, 4 more unanswered goals and the game slipped away 8-3.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Drakes have been flying since the trades.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game this period versus Ohio Legends
Ohio Legends @ Portland Sasquatch Ohio gets a goal from Derlago (5) 4:07 into the first period to quiet the Portland home crowd but Portland responds two and a half minutes later with a goal from Risebrough (10) and 46 seconds later from Hamel (10) to take a 2-1 1st period lead. In the second period, Gretzky nets his 28th goal to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. Ohio needed to show some energy in the third period and came out hot with Ferdeko (14) scoring 0″42 into the period but Gretzky ended all the Legends hope when he got goal #2 to ice the dame for Portland 4-2.

star #1 -Gretzky 2 goals
Star #2 – Risebrough 1 goal
STar #3 -Hamel 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland wins their only game of the week.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Hosting Texas and Syracuse. Will the two time Cup champs figure out they are actually quite good? Or will they continue to be “meh”.

Half of the starting defensemen are resting this week… so there is that too.

Texas Brahmas @ Pittsburgh Spirit Larmer with a Hat Trick (24, 25, 26) and St. Croix with 32 saves as the Spirit skate to a 4-3 win.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Pittsburgh Spirit Millen outplays his counterpart St. Croix which leads to a 6-3 win for Syracuse.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 games, 2 points. Too mediocre. Still looking to make deals that help us next season and beyond.
