| Ohio Legends @ Chicago Underground | Chicago came out with the sickles swinging and the play moving only the way Chicago wanted it. 3 in the first, 2 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd. It becomes a blowout even though both teams put up 22 shots on goal each. Pete Peeters was outstanding, but Chicago’s defense helped him along as Peeters ends up with a shutout.

| Charlestown Chiefs @ New Castle Ducks | NCD 2 CHA 1 An unusually tight, low-scoring game, goes to the Ducks as Steve Bozek’s goal at 13:57 of the third breaks a 1-1 tie and wins it for New Castle. Lanny McDonald’s 46th of the year gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead late in the second period. In the third, the Ducks tied it on a goal by Andre Savard before Bozek beat Rick Wamsley for the game-winner.
THREE STARS: Charlestown’s Rick Wamsley made 33 saves and NCD outshot CHA 35-26. The Chiefs had a 23-13 SOG edge after two. In the third, the Ducks poured it on, outshooting the Chiefs 22-3!d |
| Saint Clair Shores Saints @ | SCS 5 NCD 4 The Saints have the worst record in the MWOTHL. The Ducks are battling to have the second-best. But the Saints have had the Ducks number all season, as they have now beaten New Castle twice in four games, with one of the four ending in a tie.
St Clair Shores with one of the league’s worst power plays, had the power play working tonight as they took a 2-0 lead on two power-play goals (by Huddy and McDougal). New Castle tied it in the second period on goals by Marc Tardif and Bobby Nystrom – only to see SCS retake the lead on a goal by Hopkins. Then with less than 3 minutes to go in the second McDougal scored his second of the game to make it 4-2. In the third, McDougal completed the hat trick, at 6:24, to give SCS a 5-2 lead. Then the Ducks battled back. Middleton scored (#44) at 10:08 and Walter at 19:02 (#28) with the Ducks net empty. 5-4 with less than a minute to go, no goalie, and the Ducks pressed hard but Mike Liut held on to give Saint Clair Shores another upset win against New Castle. | Dallas Drakes @ Saint Clair Shores Saints | In the first period, the Saints start off very hot. Malone, St. Laurent, and Delorme all score. But, the Drakes are serious and rattle off 4 consecutive goals. Duguay, Kelly, Maruk, and Ramsey all score for Dallas. The last three goals by Dallas were late in the 3rd within 2 minutes. The Drakes fold.

Glen Currie’s goal with five seconds remaining gave Ohio the point. Neal Broten scored a pair of goals for the Bulldogs and Miroslav Frycer had a pair for the Legends. Richard Sevigny had 33 saves for Syracuse, while Corrado Micalef turned away 21 for Ohio. The Bulldogs were two-for-four on the power play. |

Another game with late heroics for the Legends, as Doug Jarvis scored with 27 seconds remaining for the victory. Bernie Federko did his part, winning 15 of 26 faceoffs. Dan Bouchard stopped 24 shots and Don Edwards re-directed 25 in the loss. |

| Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Texas Brahmas | Stastny scores the first two goals of the game and Brooklyn starts with a 2-0 lead. Andreychuck scores with under 2 left in the first to make it a 2-1 game at the intermission and give Texas momentum, which is quickly squashed as Stastny completes the hat trick 1:19 into the second. Sulliman follows that up to make it 4-1 Brooklyn. Then the lights came on for Texas. Texas scores the next 5 goals, one in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd to take the game 6-4.

| Dallas Drakes @ Mackinac Island Moose | Drakes 5, Moose 2 – Secord and MacLean get things started right, one minute in, with a little altercation that earns them 5 minutes of rest. Shortly after, Smyl finds an opening in close and puts the Moose up 1-0. Teams battle even the rest of the way, until late when a Smyl holding penalty puts the Drakes on the PP, and Dionne takes advantage to tie it 1-1. On to intermission.
Moose grab control in the 2nd period, shutting down the Drakes, allowing only 4 SOG, while taking 15 of their own. One by Napier, early, finds the net, making it 2-1 Moose. Goalies dominate the rest of the period and its 2-1 Moose with one period to go. A team in the Moose uniform is on the ice in the 3rd period, but they don’t play like the Moose. The Drakes, especially Secord and Dionne have a field day, those 2 scoring 2 goals each, and the Moose thoroughly disappoint the arena. Drakes in a laugher, 5-2. 1st star – Dionne 3G hat trick |
| Chicago Underground @ Mackinac Island Moose | Moose 5, Underground 3 – Moose come out and set the arena on fire, scoring 4 times in the first 17 minutes. MacLean, Dunlop, Napier, and Eaves all getting one. The Underground takes a little zip away from the home team with a late powerplay goal by Mondou. 4-1 heading to the break.
Chicago serves notice they will not lay down and play dead, as McNab scores before the halfway mark to cut the lead to 2, and get the attention of all the Moose faithful. MacLean makes everybody feel better a minute later when he gets one in, and the lead is a more comfortable 3. Chicago puts on an aggressive attack and the Moose struggle to get even shots on goal the rest of the way. Meloche is able to stop everything else, and the period ends 5-2 Moose. 3rd period is a continuation of the 2nd with Chicago 14 shots to only 7 for the Moose. Fortunately for the home team, Meloche is pretty solid, stopping all but one from Savard just 2 minutes into the period. Moose happy to skate off the ice with the win. 1st star – MacLean 2G |
| WEEKLY SUMMARY: | A good win over Chicago, but a distressing power failure against the Drakes. We’ll be studying the game film on that one to try and fix the breakdown. Dionne has always been a problem for the Moose. |

| WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Many months ago, the Charlotte Dynamo record stood at a respectable 9-6-2; but since then things have deteriorated to the point since then where Charlotte entering this week had won only 11 wins in its LAST 47 TRIES (record now 20-33-10). Throw everything else out: considering the exact same team is being rolled out, the mathematical odds of such a skid occurring have to be absolutely astronomical. Suffice to say, I’m hardly a fan of this game engine at the moment.
Charlotte forged ahead with three home games versus in-state rival North Carolina 89ers, and out-of-division opponents Catoctin and Portland (Writeups will be quick as I effort to turn this in early for Stray). |
| North Carolina 89’ers @ Charlotte Dynamo | Victory eluded Charlotte’s grasp yet again as the 89ers overcame a 2-0 first intermission deficit with, astonishingly enough, a hat trick from John Ogrodnick on three consecutive goals that led to a 3-3 tie after two periods; then after an exchange of goals in the third, these Tar Heel state teams skated off to a 4-4 tie.
Mats Naslund put the 89ers ahead 4-3 with 1:20 left in the game but Charlotte answered right back on a Gil Perreault extra-attack goal 20 seconds later as Dynamo goalie Andy Moog left the net empty. Three stars: |
| Catoctin Cardinals @ Charlotte Dynamo | This time, the Dynamo hold a 1-0 lead 45 minutes through the game, only to surrender three goals in a span of six minutes followed by a later empty netter, to drop this contest 4-1. |
| Portland Sasquatch @ Charlotte Dynamo | The Dynamo seize yet another 2-0 first period lead but ultimately fall 4-3. Sean freaking McKenna (only remembered cause I was a young Sabres fan and Aud Club member under my Dad’s wing in those Scotty Bowman days–the pre-game carving tables were just unbelievable but I digress) scores the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining. |

| Texas Brahmas @ CapJack Rangers | Rangers work hard in the 1st to close out this game and grab a 3-1 lead on an 18-6 SOG advantage. Texas also gave the Rangers 4 PPs in the 1st period and then another very early in the 2nd. Robinson took advantage of one of those, Crowder and Arniel scored the other Rangers goals in the 1st. Sutter got the Brahmas on the board. 2nd Period – Don Maloney upped the score to 4-1 but then Texas makes a game of it. Andrechuk scores – Podubny scores on a delayed penalty call and it’s 4-3 Rangers. Then Trottier gets one for CapJack to make it 5-3 – turns into the GWG, but Korn gets one past Garrett in the final minute of the 2nd and the period ends 5-4. The crowd is ready for a rip-roaring 3rd period – but instead, they see Garrett stop 16 Brahmas shots while DeBlois scores within the opening 2 minutes of the 3rd and the Rangers hang on for the 6-4 win. STARS: 1. CAP – Crowder 1 goal, 1 assist 2. TEX – Poddubny 1 goal, 1 assist 3. CAP – Arniel 1 goal Rangers control 63% of the faceoffs which helped a lot. |
| Charlestown Chiefs @ CapJack Rangers | Then the Chiefs came to town and Reggie Dunlop had them fired up – Rangers held them even 2-2 in the 2nd, but that was the highlight of our day. The Chiefs owned this game. Outshooting the Rangers 16-4 in the 1st, Charlestown runs up a 3-1 lead behind goals from Nicholls, Gardner, and Huber. Ray Allison chipped one in for CapJack (shorthanded).In the 2-2 second it looked like a game with the Rangers get the first two – Robinson and Ray Allison (PP), his 2nd and the score was a tie. But Nicholls gets his 2nd goal for the Chiefs and that’s followed by Tremblay’s goal near the end of the period.3rd period – the Chiefs manage only 6 shots on Resch, but two of them get by him – Shedden and a late goal by McKegney (PP) as Charlestown wins going away (please go away), 7-3. Wamsley stopped all 8 shots in the 3rd. STARS: 1. CHA – Nichols 2 goals 2. CAP – Ray Allison 2 goals 3. CHA – McKegney 1 goal, 2 assists |

| Portland Sasquatch @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | The visitors come out firing away and Paul Cyr nets the power-play goal to put the Sasquatch in front, but before the first period is over, Phil Housley would even things up with a power-play score for the Harbor Rats. Outshot 14-4, tied at one, we’ll take it. Portland comes harder in the 2nd, putting 20 more shots on the net, but Eddie Mio is having the night of his life, stopping them all. Meanwhile, Mark Johnson puts the Rats in front halfway through the period. After 40 minutes, outshot 34-10, but up one goal. Bobby Smith gets a power-play goal to put Brooklyn up 3-1 9 minutes into the 3rd period and Mio continues to stop everything the Sasquatch continues to throw at him. Until they pull the goalie for the extra attacker and Rich Preston scores with 1:20 remaining to make it a one-goal game. But tonight is Mio’s night and he makes a few more saves in the final seconds to preserve the 3-2 Brooklyn win with a 45 save performance! |
| Catoctin Cardinals @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats | Mike Bullard scores the Cardinal’s 3rd power-play goal of the game to get them within one early in the 2nd period and Bobby Carpenter gets Catoctin the tying goal just :03 seconds before the horn to send us to the lockers rooms tied 4-4 heading for the 3rd period. Darryl Sutter buries his 30th goal of the season just :12 ticks after a Brooklyn power play expired, to put the Rats in front. 2 minutes later Mark Johnson scores on the power play, his 40th of the season to open a 2 goal lead for the home team. With 5 minutes left Mike Gartner scores on a breakaway to keep the Cardinals from emptying the net as the Brooklyn wins 7-4. |
