CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 1 home game this week – hosting Pittsburgh! Patrick division is showing their weakness, so this week we beat up on each other. We all have a chance!
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Oh – these teams used to be strong contenders, now they’re pretenders (but all have a chance in this division).
This definitely was a spirited game – f35-33 SOG with the Rangers having the slight edge -but the scoring chance edge was even great at 26-19 and face-offs also a big edge for the Rangers at 63.9 to 36.1 %. But it still ended up a 1 goal game.
2-2 tie after 1 with alternating goals with Arniel scoring 1st for CAP and then Barger for PIT, then Trottier then Steen. The Barber goal was a PP goal (only PP goal by Pittsburgh in 3 chances).
The 2nd period sees some separation as Silk and Mantha both score in the opening 11 minutes for CAP. Then the Spirit’s MacTavish cuts into the Ranger lead with a goal with 3 to go, but Ludzik scores for the Rangers on a SH shift with less than a minute to go, and CapJack skates to the locker with a 5-3 lead. But the Rangers have been notorious for 3rd period flops.14 minutes skate by with no scoring when Sittler finds the back of the net for Pittsburgh and it’s 5-4! Then with the game approaching the uh-oh zone, Dvorak gets whistle for his 2nd holding penalty of the 3rd period and the Rangers have the PP with 3 minutes to go. And Larry Robinson makes good on it with a PP goal with 10 seconds left on the penalty and the Rangers go up 6-4. Then Pittsburgh pulls Wamsley and with 1:09 to go, Barber gets his 2nd of the game and cuts it to 6-5. Is familiar finish instore for the Rangers? Pittsburgh keeps the extra attacker on the ice for the final minute and boy do they pepper Weeks – but he holds firm (or something resembling that) and there are no more goals and CapJack wins it 6-5!
STARS
1. CapJack – Robinson – besides his 1 goal (GWB) he also gets 3 assists for 4 points total!
2. Pittsburgh – Barber – 2 goals!
3. Pittsburgh – Steen – 1 goal, 1 assist
WEEKLY SUMMARY: So we had 1 home game this week and won it! Woohoo. Let’s see how the road goes.

New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The slumping New Castle Ducks have only one home game this week and it is a BIGGIE – against the division-leading Syracuse Bulldogs. After missing the playoffs the last two seasons, Jamie Campbell’s Bulldogs are back in a big way as they currently lead the MWOTHL in Points (24) – a 6 point lead over the Ducks coming into this game. SYR is 3rd in scoring and 6th in defense. New Castle is a surprising 14th in offense but 4th in defense. The teams met earlier this season in Syracuse where the Bulldogs won it in OT 5-4
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Two good defensive teams showed that defense still exists in the high-scoring MWOTHL, as the two squads went through the first two periods SCORELESS. NCD had a slight 23-21 SOG edge in the first two periods as goalies Billy Smith (NCD) and Richard Sevigny (SYR) were flawless in net. Then at 1:26 of the third, Syracuse’s #1 line went to work as Brian Bellows scored his 9th assisted by Larouche and Marsh. With Syracuse checking tightly it looked like the one goal might be it – then at 10:23 Tiger Williams sent The Duck Pond crowd into a frenzy as he scored his 5th of the year to tie it up. The noise at the Pond was only louder some four minutes later when Duck veteran Ryan Walter lit the lamp for his 4th of the year and New Castle was up 2-1 with 5:02 remaining. As the clock ticked down, Syracuse called a timeout to get their #1 line refreshed and it paid off when Bellows did it again, scoring his second of the game (from Larouche and Larson) with 1:40 left to tie the game at 2-2. It was on to OT again for these two evenly matched teams. At 3:36 of OT Andre Savard beat Sevigny for his 4th of the year and the Ducks came away with a big 3-2 win on home ice.

THREE STARS:
1- SYR Bellows 2G
2- NCD Savard 1G
3- NCD Walter 1G

Sevigny made 34 saves as NCD outshot SYR 37-29 including 11-7 in the third and 3-1 in OT
Pierre Larouche had 2 assists and won 16 of 29 faceoffs

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get a big win at home to pull within four points of division-leading Syracuse. The Ducks continue to have difficulty getting their offense going but the defense, and Billy Smith’s goaltending, are carrying them so far. For Syracuse, Pierre Larouche now has 29 points and is second to Mike Bossy in scoring with some more games to be played this week.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Big week in Fort Worth as Texas attempts to get back to .500. Andes and powerful Mackinac Island visit.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Andes jumps out to a quick lead on a goal by Hamel, but from there it is all Texas. Nilsson and Tucker each score twice, McCourt adds another, Bannerman is on his game and Texas wins 5-1.

Three Stars:
Tucker 2G, 1A
Nilsson 2G, 1A
Acton 3A

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Totally different game with Mackinac in town. Kurri scores 33 seconds in to give MIM a quick lead. Andreychuk gets the next 2 for a 2-1 Texas lead. Beers (MIM), Cyr (TEX), Lysiak (MIM), and Hughes (TEX) exchange the next 4 goals and Texas leads 4-3 31 seconds into the 3rd. O’Connell and Ladouceur score the next 2 for MIM as they take the lead 5-4. Andreychuk completes the hat trick, tying the game again at 5 at the 4:53 mark. Plenty of time left in this one! Propp (MIM) gets a PP goal to give MIM another 1 goal lead. From here Texas takes over, starting with a breakaway for Poddubny, a PP goal by Acton, and an ENG by McClelland to secure an 8-6 win.

Three stars:
Andreychuk 3G
O’Connell 1G, 3A
Hughes 1G, 1A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two wins for Texas is a very good thing. Finally back to .500, at least until the visiting results roll in 🙂
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints take on the Michigan Stags in the Saints only home game this week.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS In the 1st period, the Stags net 2 goals. Messier and Ogrodnick score goals. Michigan leads 2-0 after 1 period.

In the 2nd, Doug Wilson scores his 2nd goal of the year to narrow the lead.

Late in the 3rd, Tambellini scores an insurance goal and the Stags get the win on the road.

Michigan 3 SCS 1

1-Ogrodnick
2-Fuhr
3-Tambellini

Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte started this week with a 4-7-3 record, partly due to struggles away from its building in a very road-heavy early schedule. But that mark was still good enough for being just two points out of first in a weaker than normal Patrick division that looks up for grabs, with every team below .500. Can this talented enough Charlotte team catch fire enough to break through and contend? Home games against division rivals CapJack and Pittsburgh this week would definitely be a gauge.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte hosted the defending champions with the potential for a temporary tie of first place in the Patrick if it could hold serve at home — but instead dropped a 7-5 loss to the Rangers by fizzling in the third period.

The turning point occurred with the score knotted at 4-4 early in the third as the Dynamo, which had rallied back from a 3-0 deficit, sought to gain the lead on the power play. Disaster ensued as Jerry King Kong Korab cashed in for CapJack on a shorthanded goal that put the squad ahead for good, 5-4. Shortly thereafter, the Rangers notched yet another shorthanded goal off the stick of Bryan Trottier, who beat an Andy Moog that was thoroughly dreadful through the entire contest (18 saves against six goals).

Charlie Simmer narrowed the deficit for Charlotte, 6-5, on a goal with 1:15 left, before Larry Robinson clinched on an empty netter 30 seconds later for CapJack.

Three Stars:
1 . CAP Trottier, 2 G, 3 Pts
2. CHD, Simmer 2 G
3. CAP Robinson, 1 empty-net goal, 2 Pts

Notable: Ludzik for Capjack, 17 PIM

GAME #2: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Hosting the once-mighty Pittsburgh Sprit (a dynasty finding itself in an understandable rebuild with several veterans who spearheaded championships but are aging out all at once), the Dynamo built a 4-0 lead through the first 22 minutes of play en route to a 5-3 bounceback win.

Charlotte’s top three offensive stars Charlie Simmer, Glenn Anderson, and Dale Hawerchuk each scored goals in that opening period to stake a 3-0 lead, with two of those tallies coming on the power play. Then 1:26 into the second, offensive-minded defenseman Thomas Eriksson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, off assists from Hawerchuk and Laurie Boschman. Meanwhile, Charlotte starting goalie Doug Keans proved to be a vast improvement over Moog with 29 saves.

Late even-strength Pittsburgh goals were notched by Craig Laughlin, Alan Haworth, and Thomas Steen, but Spirit goalie Rick Wamsley was chased in favor of Pelle Lindbergh by the end of the second period following a Dave Hunter Dynamo goal (Wamsley let in five goals on just 14 shots on net).

Three stars all Charlotte
1. Hawerchuk 1 G 3 points
2. Eriksson 1 G 2 points
3. Simmer 1 G, 2 Points

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte drops a pivotal game for a share of first against Cap Jack and rebounds with a win over the Spirit, scoring five goals in each game but settling for two out of four points at home. Dynamo ownership continues to mull selling off some of its talented players if a winning record and playoff contention proves to become elusive.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes welcomes Charlestown and fellow upstate New York rival Syracuse
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Andes welcomes fellow Smythe member Charlestown to town. Andes is behind everyone in the divisional standings and while it’s early the Mountaineers don’t want to lose any ground if possible. Chiefs hit the ice running or maybe skating would be more appropriate. The Chiefs get 2 past Sauve in the first period while Andes manages just one. The 2nd period is scoreless. In the third period Andes scores to tie the game with 7 minutes to go. We’re headed for a 2 – 2 tie when McKegney wins it for the Chiefs with 1:08 left on the clock. They would get another via the empty netter path to leave with a 4 – 2 win.

1st Star – Kisio
2nd Star – McKegney
3rd Star – Krushelynski

GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Our 2nd home game of the week it’s Norris leading Syracuse Bulldogs. Won’t be easy. Both teams score in the first 20 to end the period 1 – 1. In the 2nd period Andes is awarded a rare Penalty Shot that Sutter completes tying the game at 2 – 2. The third period continues to be a bane for Andes as they allow 2 goals to send the home fans away disappointed.

1st Star – Bellows
2nd Star – Bubla
3rd Star – Tonelli

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes continues to struggle on the offensive end and in the third period, they keep giving up too many late games. The team is consistent this week, giving up 4 goals each game while only finding success 2 times in each game. Struggles of an expansion squad.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS Capjacks nets three in the opening period and never looked back.
GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS Brooklyn nets three in the opening period and never looked back.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1-1 for Brooklyn this Segment
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland hosts division foes Texas and Andes with the opportunity to gain a foothold in the Smyth
GAME #1:

TEXAS BRAHMAS

VS.

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

Texas visits Portland in second place in the Smythe Division and looked to gain some ground but Gretzky got the scoring started in the first period with his league-leading 21st goal. Andreychuk (10) evened the score for the Brahmas 2 minutes later but that was the only offense for Texas for the night. Still tied 1-1 in the third Hunter (7) and Ciccarelli (6) both found the back of the net as Portland wins 3-1

Star #1 – Gretzky 1 goal 1 assist
Star #2 – Foligno 3 assists
Star #3 – Ciccarelli 1 goal

GAME #2:

ANDES MOUNTAINEERS

VS.

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

The Mountaineers come to Portland looking to steal a win and start the scoring 2:59 into the game as Jackson (1) nets his first goal of the year. Ciccarelli gets a power-play goal (7) and another goal in the first period to get the crowd cheering. Gilmour (9) evens the score in the second period and Picard (1) gives Andes the lead with 9:30 remaining in the game. With a little under 2 minutes remaining the Sasquatch pull the goalie and pound the goal but are unable to get another goal as the mountaineers win 3-2

Star #1 – Ciccarelli 2 goals
Star #2 – Picard goal
Star #3 – Gilmour 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland still leads the division after going 1-1 at home but can not generate a winning streak to pull away
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends present their busiest home week of the season this week, as Legends Arena welcomes four opponents.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. OHIO LEGENDS MIM 4, OHIO 1

Mackinac Island gets a pair of goals from both Jari Kurri and Paul MacLean in upending Ohio, 4-1. The Legends get their lone goal from Steve Yzerman. The Moose do not mix well in Ohio, as a total of five fights (including a line brawl) highlighted the evening.

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 4, SCS 3

Tony Tanti was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring all four Legends goals in the victory — including a natural hat trick in the first period.

The Saints fought back in the third period, outshooting Ohio, 22-4, and scoring twice in the final 61 seconds to get to the final margin.

GAME #3: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 6, PORT 5

A five-goal explosion in the second period, including another natural hat trick by Tony Tanti, lifted Ohio to the 6-5 win over Portland. Mike Liut stopped 34 shots and dished off a pair of assists in the victory.

Risto Siltanen netted a pair of goals for the Sasquatch and Wayne Gretzky added a pair of assists.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio takes two of three on its frozen floor but is still searching for a way to upend the Moose.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Division rival Saint Clair Shores comes to the Island. An interesting in-state rivalry, now battling for the division title, along with Ohio.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Saints 6, Moose 3 – The Moose seem to sleepwalk through the first period. After a little skirmish between Wesley and MacLean, the Moose make numerous mistakes, putting them in PK mode for 6 minutes in the middle of the period. The PK unit is perfect however and kills off all 3 minors. In between penalties, the Saints find the net twice, with McCarthy and Macoun scoring. And it’s 2-0 from a 19-5 shot advantage for the Saints.

Period 2 opens with the same vibe, as the Saints continue to control. Gustafson and Federko push the lead to an impressive 4 goals only 6 minutes into the period. Just a minute later, the tide starts to come in as MacLean gets the Moose on the board. Mid-period fights between Markwart & O’Connell, Federko and Giles, opens the ice up for some 4 on 4 action. The Moose take advantage of this and Lysiak scores before the 2nd fight penalty expires, and the lead is down to 2. Three minutes later it’s Terrion with a rare 3rd line goal, to make the game 4-3, and a pumped-up Moose squad go to intermission down, but on the rebound.

Period 3 sees the momentum go away and the Saints come marching. A goal by Wilson really hurts at the midway point. 5-3 Saints. In a final act of desperation, the Moose pull the goalie and after an initial surge, the Saints sneak the puck out of the zone and a long empty netter kills all hope for the Moose. 6-3.

1st star – McCarthy 1G 3pts
2nd – Gustafsson 1G 3pts
3rd – Wilson 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The loss to the Saints puts the Moose 3 points behind in the division race. This one really hurts early in the season. Time to tinker with the game plan.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three home games on the home slate for the slumping Stags, and they finally break their 8-game home winless streak but it took overtime to do so.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Michigan rallies from a 4-2 3rd period deficit on goals by Doug Smail and Bobby Carpenter. But Ohio’s Tim Kerr beats Ron Low for his second of the game, for the GWG with just 2:26 left in regulation. Randy Carlyle added an ENG for a 6-4 final. 3 stars: (1) Tony Tanti [2G+2A]; (2) Tim Kerr [2G, GWG]; (3) Randy Carlyle[???]
GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags welcome their neighbors from the north and their hospitality knows no bounds, as they drop a 4-3 decision to Mackinac Island. Dan Quinn with 2 goals and Brian Propp with 3 assists fueled the visitor’s offense. John Ogrodnick’s 1st of the season, with Fuhr on the bench, brought Michigan within 1, but it was to no avail in preventing yet another home defeat. 3 stars: (1) Dan Quinn [2G]; (2) Brian Propp [3A]; (3) Jari Kurri [1G]
GAME #3: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS FINALLY! Bobby Carpenter’s 5th of the campaign, coming at 4:53 of overtime, gave the Michigan Stags a 6-5 victory over Charlestown, the team’s first home-ice win since opening night. Trailing 6-3 entering the 3rd period, the Stags evened the score when Steve Tambellini and John Ogrodnick scored 3 1/2 minutes apart on Dan Bouchard. On the night, Michigan fired 49 shots at the Chiefs’ Bouchard. 3 stars: (1) John Ogrodnick [1G+1A]; (2) Bernie Nicholls [1G+1A]; (2) Marian Stastny [1G+1A]
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Hopefully Michigan can build on their first home-ice win since the first game at Cobo Arena this season. With John Ogrodnick and Dave Babych back in the lineup, the team has some much-needed veteran leadership.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas gets three at home vs New Castle, Syracuse, and Charlotte
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Great game, no scoring in the first and a back and forth game. The Drakes are leading 3-2 with less than a minute left until Rick Middleton scores with 37 seconds left in the game. Mark Osbourne scores with 33 seconds left in overtime to walk off the win for the Ducks.
GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. DALLAS DRAKES No scoring in the first period in this one but the Drakes scored 3 in the second. Glen Hanlon gets a 38 save shutout for the Drakes.
GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. DALLAS DRAKES Each team scores 2 in the first and 1 in the second for a 3-3 midway through the second. Randy Gregg gives the Drakes a 4-3 lead towards the end of the second and Patrick Sundstrom ices the game in the third 5-3.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes get 2 of 3.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games for the lowly Spirit.
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT A divisional foe comes to town to spank the Spirit 5-2.

It was a “spirited” affair that saw 3 fights, and multiple roughing penalties. No lost love here!

The Bandits did fire off 41 shots, showing some little sign of life, but Stephan saved 39 of those.

GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT New Castle – Same old results… Ducks beat the Spirit 3-2.

Both teams were 1-5 on the PP as we had a chippy matchup. Bandits must have still been a little ticked about the last game.

Bandits shot line in all 3 periods? 6-6-6

I need a young priest, and an old priest… the power of Christ compels you!!

Nothing could exorcise the demon that is the season for the Spirit.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Blah blah… Spirit lose… blah blah… used to be good… blah blah blah.
