Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: New Castle and Texas come to the Island this week. Getting colder by the day up here.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE 1st period is nearly a shutout until Johnson scores with just 14 seconds left on the clock. The Ducks sneak off to the break up 1-0.

The Moose bounce back early in the 2nd thanks to back to back minors by the Ducks. Kurri gets both PP goals to put the Moose up 2-1. No more powerplays for the Moose and the only PP for the Ducks is killed off. Another late goal by a former Moose, Lysiak, ties the game at 2. And we head to the 3rd period.

Although the Ducks with a slight edge on SOG, 10-9, it’s the Moose who dominate the ice with 4 goals. MacLean with 2 goals, and Kurri adds 2 more to complete his hat trick. Ruskowski with one for the Ducks mid-period. Moose get away with a 6-3 win.

1st star – Kurri 4G
2nd – MacLean 2G
3rd – Zezel – 4A

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Goals by Ledyard and MacLean very early raise expectations for a real barn-burner. Well………… that didn’t happen. No more scoring in the 1st, or the 2nd, in spite of a bunch of blue box scoring chances for the Moose. Bannermann holds the line for the Brahmas, and we head to the 3rd tied at 1.

Pavelich breaks the tie early. More good chances for the Moose keep getting blocked by Bannermann, until 5 minutes left when Zezel sneaks one in. 2-2 with 5 to go and both teams get chances, but nothing goes in and we get overtime.

After a minute of neutral zone play, the Moose move it into the offensive zone only to see Tucker steal the puck and head down the ice all alone, zipping the puck into the net, getting a strong road win for Texas. 3-2 in overtime.

1st star – Tucker GWG 2pts
2nd – BAnnerman 39 saves
3rd – Pavelich 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Strong win and an OT loss heartbreaker. Need to put distance between us and Ohio before Gretzky gets that team on a winning streak.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week, against the Andes Mountaineers, who the Ducks have beaten 3 of 3 this season. With three tough road games this week, the “new look” Ducks need a fourth straight against Andes.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS No fourth straight as the Mountaineers win easily 4-2. NCD scored first at 2:14 when newly acquired Kent Nilsson scored unassisted on a breakaway. But the Mountaineers tied it less than a minute later on a goal by Robert Picard. Later in the period, Doug Gilmour scored on a power play to make it 2-1 Andes. Gilmour did it again, again on the power play, at 18:37 and Andes went to the locker room with a 3-1 lead.
in the second period, Andes extended the lead to 4-1 as Larry Murphy scored his 8th of the year. 4-1 Andes after two
The Ducks dominated the third period, outshooting Andes 11-1, with three power plays but they got only one goal, Nilsson’s second of the game at 8:28. But that was it as Greg Millen made 26 saves for the Mountaineers
Andes was outshot 28-14. John Vanbiesbrouck allowed 4 goals on only the 14 shots for the DucksTHREE STARS:
1- AND – Gilmour 2G
2- NCD – Nilsson 2G
3- AND – Picard 1G
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks lose their only game of the week, which does not help their already fading playoff chances
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Rangers – are not defensively minded, you’ve seen our goalies, right? Well, we tried hard to get Wayne Gretzky to bolster our offense, but alas, even that didn’t pan out. So, to the joy of our faithful fans, we had 3 home games this week! Yay – however, we also had to host Mackinac Island and Charlestown (division leaders) along with newcomer Hyannisport – they will be a force, but not so much this year (we hope).
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Jari Kurri – only the top goal scorer and points leader in the MWOTHL! So what does he do in our Garden?  Role the highlight real!

1st Period – he scores 2 minutes into the game, then 7 minutes later he scores a PP goal to make it 2-0 MIM. Beer sales just went up as the crowd left their seats for the concession areas – gotta have some fun, right?

OK – now jump ahead to the 3rd period for a moment – 4 minutes in and Kurri scores his 3rd goal (a hat trick) of the game. But what – forget that hat trick for a moment because this goal was the 1st of 3 MORE GOALS for Jari – and he did it in the natural hat trick fashion. One at 4:17, a PP goal at 7:24, and then the 3rd (HIS FIFTH OF THE GAME) at 8:27 – that was less than four minutes to score those 3 goals. Needless to say, those 5 goals earned him 1st star of the game (plus, he will get an assist on another PP goal later in the 3rd. That’s the Jari Kurri story. Now for the rest of the game, like there’s more…

1st Period – Kurri’s two goals give the Moose a 2-1 lead after 1 period. Wickenheiser scores in the waning minutes to give the home crowd at least something to cheer about (and return to the seats).

2nd Period – the Moose move up to a 3-1 lead when MacLean scores (another scoring machine), 6 1/2 minutes in. Then the Rangers get a big break – Mario Marios gets 4 minutes for slashing and the Rangers cash in not once, but twice during his penalty. First Crowder and then McNab and the game is tied! Mackinac Island however, didn’t like that and 30 seconds after the game is tied, Propp breaks out on his own and scored to put the Moose back on top, 4-3. But the Moose again commit a big sin when Goring goes off for high sticking – 4 MINUTES AGAIN and Haworth is able to score the PP goal to tie it once again. Rangers only score once during this power play, but during the final minute of the period, Barr is set up for the go-ahead goal and the Rangers skate into the 2nd intermission with a 5-4 lead. (Of course, the Jari Kurri phase II is yet to come).

We move to the 3rd period with 9 goals already on the board and the home team holding a 5-4 come-from-behind lead. Then we have the Kurri explosion for a natural hat 3rd-period hat trick and by the 8:30 mark the Moose, by virtue of Kurri, are in the lead 7-5! Kurri’s middle goal in this set was a PP goal. The crowd actually stuck through this because it was quite impressive. And the Rangers Brian Trottier was smiling, thinking well, let’s see if we have anything left in the tank. So when Marios goes off for roughing at 9:33, Trottier and the Rangers pull back within 1 on Trottier’s PP goal. Things seemed possible, but then Haworth goes off for hooking and Propp scores his 2nd goal with just under 5 minutes to go and the Moose are back in front by 2 at 8-6! Now the crowd is deflated. PA system announces “last minute of play in regulation” and the reality is settling in. Rangers, however, still think anything is possible and Resch (who relieved Weeks) heads for the bench. And with 57 seconds left, Trottier shoots and beats Meloche stick side low, 8-7 Moose. Resch is still on the bench, Rangers win the draw, move into the offensive zone, Haworth a slap shot – GOAL! Ripped it right past Meloche and the game is tied with 49 seconds to go. Resch back on the ice. Rangers again gain control and move into the Moose end. This time Arniel gets set up and blam, he beats Meloche glove side low and the Rangers now have a 9-8 lead!! 19 seconds left. Seriously. Well, the Moose decides they will pull all the stops to get this one tied. However, the move backfires when Kromm gains control of the puck and feeds a perfectly aimed shot down ice into the empty net for the Rangers 5th goal of the period and a 10-8 lead with only 6 seconds left!! The ticks go quickly and the Rangers pull out a stunning 4 goals in the final minute to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 win and spoil Kurri’s brilliant night.

NO Defense in this game – which was at least surprising from the Moose standpoint as they have the stingiest defense in the league. 9 total goals in periods 1 and 2 and ANOTHER NINE in period 3. Can’t say I’ve seen one like this before. The total SChance and SOGS were equal – 62 of each. In fact, the Rangers managed 32 SOGs and 35 scoring chances. 7 total PP goals in the game!

STARS:
1. MIM – Kurri, 5 goals, 6 points
2. MIM – Propp, 2 goals, 5 points
3. CAP – Haworth 2 goals, 4 points

MIM – Zezel had 5 assists and Trottier has 2 goals and an assist for CAP

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Apparently, the Chiefs heard about the previous game in the garden – the fans were still abuzz about it. So they decided to start fast with Lemieuz and Kushelnyski (PP) each scoring within the opening 6 1/2 minutes. Kromm tallies for the good guys in the 2nd half of the opening period but O’Reilly beats Resch in one of those heartbreaking last-second goals – 2 ticks left on the clock – and the Chiefs skate off the 1st with a big 3-1 lead (BIG??)

2nd period – what, only 1 goal? Yes and that one is from Barr as CAP pulls to within 1 after 2 periods.

So we head to the 3rd – 9 goals coming, right? NOPE – the 3rd period is pretty much a carbon copy of the 1st. Charlestown scores twice in the opening 10 minutes – Wilson and McKegney for a 5-2 lead. Barr scores again for CAP with 4 minutes left, but as the clock winds down and Resch moves to the bench, instead of the previous games magic, its the Chiefs cashing in when Wilson gets the EN goal for his 2nd of the game and a 6-3 Charlestown lead. And that’s how it ends, with the Chiefs on top (and happy to see only a 3 spot for the Rangers!)

STARS
1. CHA – Wilson 2 goals
2. CAP – Barr 2 goals
3. CHA – Nicholls 3 assists

GAME #3: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS It’s hard to believe that after 18 goals in game 1 and 9 in game 2, we are about to have a mundane 5-goal game. But the Rangers were not happy with the loss to the Chiefs and they take it out on the Presidents. Even though they manage only 18 shots on goal, 4 of them get past Stefan, 2 in the 1st and 1 each in the 2nd and 3rd. Weeks on the other hand faces 25 shots from Hyannisport and stops 24 of them for a nice win.

1st Period goals from Petterson (PP) and Donnelly put the Rangers up 2-0 at the break.

2nd Period – the Presidents draw to within 1 when Bellows beats Weeks 6 minutes in, but that was as close as they’d get. Robinson kills their spirits when he scores a SH goal just before midway in the 2nd and the Rangers grab a 3-1 lead.

3rd Period – the Rangers actually play some decent defense and with a minute and a half left, Trottier scores for CapJack, and the Rangers move out to a 4-1 lead and that’s the final score.

The STARS ceremony featured only Rangers as Weeks with 24 saves was #3, Robinson with his SH goal was number 2, and Pettersson with the 1st goal of the game and strong skating grabbed #1.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Very eventful week – Rangers grab 4 of 6 points, but the Mackinac Island game will long be remembered.

Both teams stayed off the board until 15:23 Mike Krushelnyski cuts the score to 4-3, Marcel Dionne strikes back a minute later to open the game back up to 5-3, Paul Coffey scores late, but the final is 5-4 Drakes

Portland Sasquatch

GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Wilson (4) opens the scoring for the Cyclones 3:04 into the game but Olcyzk (6) responds with his first goal as a member of Portland to end the first period 1-1. In the 2nd period, Carbonneau (16) gives Portland a 2-1 lead and while Tanti (19) nets his 1st goal for Portland on the power play and Foligno (25) adds another power-play goal to stake the Sasquatch to a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes. In the third period, Gartner (24) scored with 58 seconds remaining to draw within 4-2 but Portland’s Tanto (20) gets his second of the game to send the crowd home happy
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Gretzky who? Portland’s newcomers Tanti and Olcyzk combine for 3 goals and 3 assists to lead Portland to the win
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte had won 12 out of its last 15 entering this latest week of play to put itself in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot, barring a collapse. This midseason surge gives the Dynamo hopes of overtaking the perennial stronghold CapJack for the Patrick division crown but there’s still lots of ground to make up as it hosted two games on its home ice this week.
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo matchup against the Drakes proved to be a showcase between two offensive juggernauts, Charlie Simmer for Charlotte and the great Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne for Dallas.

Simmer scored two of Charlotte’s three goals to open the first period against Drakes goalie Glen Hanlon who was shaky at the outset. After goals were exchanged between Dallas’ Joey Mullen and Charlotte’s Laurie Boschman, the Dynamo held a 4-1 lead early in the second. But the Drakes roared back: Dionne responded with two even-strength goals later in the middle period to close the deficit to one. Then just over nine minutes into the third period, Charlotte defenseman Mats Thelin got caught hooking Dionne breaking in for the tying goal. The call was a penalty shot and Dionne capitalized by beating Charlotte goalie Andy Moog with a wrist shot for the hat trick on the opposing ice. More importantly, we were tied at 4-4.

The game stayed knotted until the closing moments of regulation. With under, a minute left a hard shot by Charlotte winger Kevin LaVallee forced a Hanlon save. Dynamo center Dale Hawerchuk won the faceoff and after exchanging passes with Lanny McDonald and Boschman the puck came back to Hawerchuk who fired a slapshot past Hanlon with 50 seconds left in the third. A last-second shot by Dallas’ Ron Greschner was stopped by Moog (his 22nd and final save of the evening) and Charlotte escaped with a 5-4 win over a Dallas squad that strung together an incredible comeback bid only to fall short at the end.

Three stars:
1. DAL Dionne, 3 G (hat trick), 4 Pts
2. CHD Simmer 2 G
3. CHD Boschman 1 G 2 points

Notable: Hawerchuk had the game-winning goal in breaking the 4-4 tie late. Both teams tied for shots with 26 each. All goals were even strength as the teams combined to go 0 for 7 in power play opportunities.

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo was flexing its muscle as it got set to host a Moose squad (32-12-3 entering the week) with the best record in the MWOTHL. Mackinac Island and Charlotte entered the contest first and second atop the power rankings respectively. Charlotte was anxious to see how it measured up against the best team on paper, especially in this second half of the season.

But (no buildup in my writing here), this matchup simply failed to live up to its hype. Charlotte players — and coaches — suffered through mental lapses and were deservedly clobbered, 5-0. The Moose broke open the game with goals in the second period from four different players following a Jari Kurri goal that broke the scoreless deadlock 11:34 into the contest.

Kurri’s goal was all Mackinac Island needed. Forwards Brian Propp, Peter Zezel, Dan Quinn, and Ric Seiling all got into the scoring act with goals throughout the second period. Seiling’s goal, a shorthander with 4:24 remaining in the period, ended any minuscule hopes the Dynamo had of rallying, chased Charlotte goalie Doug Keans, and proved to be the last goal of the contest, as the Moose blasted its hosts early, then coasted.

It didn’t help matters that Charlotte messed up the submission of its daily dressed list entering the contest – it still played 18 skaters but clearly played out of synch all evening with players inserted that it did not want. In what could be his last regular season game as Charlotte establishes its 1-2 goalie rotation for the remainder of the season, Keans, Charlotte’s third-stringer, saved just 13 against the five goals he allowed in just over 35 minutes, and after the Seiling goal, he was yanked for Andy Moog. By contrast, Gilles Meloche shined in nets for the Moose, saving 25 shots to secure the shutout.

Three stars (all from Mackinac Island):
1. Meloche 25 saves and the shutout
2. Kurri 1 G, 3 Pts
3. Zezel 1 G, 3 Pts

Notable: Charlotte narrowly outshot Mackinac Island 25-24 but with Keans faltering, it didn’t matter. Both teams tied with 27 faceoffs won – it was a statistically even contest relatively speaking except in the nets where it counted and Meloche clearly outperformed.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte splits a pair at home and settles for two of four points. Coaching lapses don’t help as it falls to the top team in the league, Mackinac Island. Note to self: no more bungling of your daily dressed lists!
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game against St. Clair Shores.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT The Spirit continue to right the ship in the second half of the season as they defeat St. Clair Shores 5-3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: One home game, two points. Let’s keep it going, boys!

GAME #3: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 6, Chicago 4
GAME #4: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio 4, New Castle 3
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ohio Legends go 2-2 on the week and this new kid Gretzky does not net a goal in these games. Maybe the road next week will be better…
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes week 14 will be hosting Michigan this week
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Stags come to town this to finish the month of January. Andes scores a minute into the game and find themselves ahead after the first two periods but Michigan scores 3 in the final 20 to earn the 4 – 2 road win.

1st – Carpenter
2nd – Ogrodnick
3rd – Ruotsalainen

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes loses its only home game this week 4 – 2 to Michigan
