Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games and a big push for a Playoff spot on the line in the Capone Center in Chicago.
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND What an opening period as both teams forget that they have to play defense. A 5-5 tie after 1 Period of play. Chicago takes a 1 goal lead early in the 2nd but then forgets about defense again. 4 Kamsack unanswered goals give a huge crushing defeat at home for the Underground.

Final Score: Kamsack 9 – Chicago 5

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: KAM – Gartner 4G
Star 2: KAM – A. Stastny 2G, 3Pts
Star 3: KAM – Reinhart 1G, 4Pts

Game Winner: – Anton Stastny

Notables:
KAM – Reinhart 3 Assists, Perreault 16 Face Off wins, Gartner 4 Goals
CHI – None

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND This one was a defensive game all around. Chicago allows 3, and only scores 1. Hopes of the Playoffs are dwindling in Chicago.

Final Score: Charlotte 3 – Chicago 1

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHD – Simmer 2G
Star 2: CHD – Moog 29 Saves
Star 3: CHI – Gainey 1G

Game Winner: – Charlie Simmer

Notables:
CHD – Halward 4 Blocked Shots
CHI – None

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago is bad, and the Playoff chances for the Underground might be dead.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Seven games remaining on the season for the Spirit… We are comfortably in the playoffs, or so it would seem. I’m no mathematician, but barring a complete collapse, and Kamsack winning out, I think we’re good.
GAME #1:

TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

Texas Brahmas come to town… we smell what they’re cooking, and it’s a Brahma win! Texas holds off an onslaught in the final minutes to win 4-3. The Spirit could only score once on a 5-minute major on Mark Hunter for boarding. Hrudey was a sieve, allowing 4 goals on 20 shots. He has to be better.
GAME #2:

OHIO LEGENDS VS.

PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

OH… IO comes to the Burgh. Hrudey must have taken the last game to heart because he stops all 29 of the Legends shots, and Goulet has a 4-point night (2 Genos, 2 Apples), en route to a 4-0 Spirit wins! Steen would also score 2 (18, 19).
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 points out of 4 is meh, but we have some breathing room. Nice to see a shutout, which was a rarity in the 80s.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After 72 games, the Dynamo’s success in 1984-85 (or its lack thereof) will boil down to an eight-game season at the end of the year. There’s no rest for the weary. Entering the week, it held a six-point lead over the still-alive Kamsack Cyclones for the fourth playoff spot in the uber-competitive Patrick division where no team is eliminated. This season could still go in multiple directions for Charlotte in a tightly packed Patrick division. The outcomes range from a division title (if CapJack were to collapse and all the stars align, albeit that is not likely), to missing the playoffs entirely in what would be a colossal disappointment. Fortunately, Charlotte has won five of its last six down the stretch and to keep pace, it probably needs to keep on winning. A point or two in the team’s lone home game this week against Portland would certainly help.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo hosted a Sasquatch team that is far better than its season record indicates, and that certainly was on display in this contest: early in the first, Portland overcame an early Charlie Simmer Charlotte goal and answered with two goals of its own, from Ed Olcyk and Paul Gagne to take a 2-1 lead 11 minutes into the contest. The Dynamo responded with three goals in the second half of a high-scoring first period. It chased starting goalie Reggie Lemelin pulled for Corrado Micalef (named after Stray perhaps?) to take back the lead, 4-2, courtesy of a trajectory-changing shorthanded goal from Laurie Boschman, followed by two goals from Charlotte’s fourth line as wingers Dave Tippett and Louis Sleigher both found the net.

The Sasquatch rallied right back in the late moments of the second period. Tony Tanti capitalized on the power play 15:44 into the period and with just 33 seconds left to play in the second, Mike Foligno (28 goals entering the week), tied the game on an assist from Olcyyk. We entered the third knotted, 4-4.

With 17:29 left in regulation, the Dynamo pulled ahead 5-4, courtesy of an even-strength goal from left winger Curt Fraser. Micalef and goalie Warren Skorodenski played brilliantly down the stretch to keep this a one-goal game. In the final moments, an unsung hero emerged. Tippett, a defensive specialist on Charlotte’s fourth line who only had three whole goals entering the week notched his second goal of this contest with 2:43 left in the third, the final goal in this game, securing the 6-4 Charlotte victory.

Skorodenski (now 19-7, a difference maker all season for a Charlotte squad nine games above .500) made 17 of his 28 saves in the third period of this contest, under intense pressure from the Sasquatch, to notch the win. In a game the Dynamo desperately needed to improve its playoff chances, its entire fourth line rose to the occasion and captured all three stars: Tippett was the first star followed by center Paul Gillis (four assists), then Sleigher (one goal and two assists).

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte gets a solid performance from Dave Tippett on its fourth line (two goals), to turn back a game Portland Sasquatch squad and pick up a critical home win. Combined with a win at Chicago the Dynamo assure itself of at least two wins in four games this week, to keep Kamsack at arm’s length for the final playoff spot – and keep the heat on Pittsburgh as the teams remain neck and neck for the third playoff seed in the East.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: CapJack trying to avoid the star aligning the end-of-season collapse to face Charlestown and Dallas at home – and with our “stellar” defense, it could be a blood bath (for everybody)!
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS CapJack with 3-2 edge in the season series but trails in goals scored against them. So it’s only fitting that this game would go to OT.

1st Period the Chiefs own the game scoring twice – Both PP goals: Tremblay and Krushelnyski. Then as the 2nd period starts Kurshelnyski scores another PP goal so after 22 minutes of play the score is 3-0 Charlestown. Then a minute and a half later the Rangers start as 96 SECOND span where they score 3 times to TIE the game. [Crowder, Beck and again Beck (PP). That’s 4 goals in the opening 5 minutes of the 2nd. But it doesn’t stop there. In the next 3 1/2 minutes Lemieux scores for the Chiefs and Barr for the Rangers and it’s 4-4.

Then to reflect on what happened in real life LAST NIGHT in NHL, Charlestown scored 2 more goals so that was 8 goals in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd. Tremblay (his 2nd) and Krushelnyski (Hat Trick) put the biscuits in the basket. Then as the period is finally winding down, Suave scores for the Rangers. 9 goals in the period and the 2nd period ends 6-5 in favor of the Chiefs!

Is anything left for the 3rd? Sure, Arniel scores twice for CapJack in the opening 6 minutes to flip the lead to 7-6 Rangers. But Lemieux decides to get his 2nd of the game 30 seconds after Arniel’s 2nd and the game is tied again. That is until Barr scores his 2nd CapJack with 3 1/2 to go. Well, the Chiefs know that the Rangers really have no defense, but they decide to pull the goalie in the final minute anyway and Young scores the tying goal for Charlestown with 21 seconds left. Time for another goal? NOT IN REGULATION.

On to OT with the score 8-8. And lights scoring, 4th ling winger Donnelly gets his 5th goal of the season to cap it off for the Rangers 9-8! The game did feature 4 goalies! Penney for Charlestown gives up 8 goals, but Hayward, who played less than 6 minutes of the game, gets the loss with the OT goal. Soetaert (rated 4.5 runs his fabulos W-L record to 6-2! (after giving up 2 goals for half the game – he earned his).

STARS –
1A – the concession stand operators, really kept the beer flowing
1. CAP – Barr 2 goals, 2 assists
2. CAP – Arniel 2 goals, 2 assists
3. CHA – Krushelnyski – hat trick!

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. CAPJACK RANGERS After a 17-goal game, can we see some kind of repeat? Yes – but only 16 goals in this one. And once again, it was the Ranger’s defense that turned tied (or lack thereof).

Skating into the 3rd period, the Rangers were up 6-4. 6 different Rangers scored, 2 in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd. Dionne and Sinisalo of Dallas matched the Rangers 2 goals in the 1st and Ramage and Dionne (again) scored in the 2nd sending the teams to the lockers after 2 with a 6-4 mark on the scoreboard in favor of the good guys.

Then the bottom fell out as the Drakes made good on half of their 10 shots on goal in the 3rd. Yup, they put 5 in the net. Anderson and Carson got the first 2 – Haworth then scored to get the Rangers back up 7-6, but then in the last 5 minutes, Mullen, Linseman, and Dionne (hat trick) put the nails in the coffin and sent the fans looking for more beer (or something stronger maybe). The Final was 9-7 Dallas!! Ranger’s PP was poor – they only stopped 2 of 6, that’s 7 PP goals given up in the last 2 home games.

STARS
1. DAL – Dionne – Hat trick
2. DAL – Linseman 1 goal, 3 assists
3. CAP – Haworth 2 goals

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Can’t say things are dual at the Garden – 33 goals in 2 games!!! One OT win, one loss. When will the final game be played!!!
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A couple of home games as Texas is still chasing Andes for 2nd in the Smythe
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Hyannisport is first up. Sutter and Adnreychuk get Texas off to a quick start in the 1st. Mullen gets HYA on the board 1 second into the 2nd on a carryover PP (not sure how that is even possible). Playfair and Taylor answer for Texas and the Brahmas are up 4-1 after 2. Hunter (HYA) and LaFontaine (TEX) exchange 3rd-period goals as Texas takes it 5-2.

3 Stars (all TEX)
1. Sutter – 1G, 3A
2. Andreychuk – 1G, 2A
3. Taylor – 1G, 1A

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Mackinac Island finishes out the homestand. A busy 1st period sees 5 goals, 3 for the bad guys (Propp, Kurri, Cote) and 2 for the good guys (Andreychuk and Svoboda) for a 3-2 MIM lead after 1. The next 3 belong to Texas, Sandstrom, and Hunter to end the 2nd and Sutter to start the 3rd as Texas is up 5-3. MIM battles back on an SH goal by McPhee and a PP goal by Propp to tie it after 3. On to OT. After 5 minutes, including a failed PP by MIM, the game ends in a 5-5 tie.

3 Stars
1. Propp (MIM) – 2G, 1A
2. Kurri (MIM) – 1G, 2A
3. Svoboda (TEX) – 1G, 1A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 out of 4 ain’t bad, but not enough either
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Big 3 game homestand this week, as the Underground, Dynamo, and Mountaineers are in town. Better double the usual beer deliveries.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE The Moose do a number on Chicago this day, and the number was 9. The Moose jumped out to a 3-goal lead early in the first on goals from Propp twice and Maruk. Chicago answers late with Bossy and the first period ends 3-1.

After Kurri scores and pushes the lead to 3, Chicago responds with goals from Hakansson and Suter to make it close at 4-3. Then the Moose run off 4 goals, Seiling, Kurri, MacLean, and Propp finishes the hat trick, making it 8-3. Gainey with one late, and Gilbert with one even later to make the final 9-4 Moose.

1st star – Propp 3G 5pts hat trick
2nd – Kurri 2G 5pts
3rd – MacLean 1G 2pts

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose with early penalties open the door for Anderson and Hawerchuk to each get a PP goal. Kurri answers late in the 1st to make it 2-1 Dynamo.

Engblom with a PP goal of his own to tie it up at 2 about the midway point. Gillis answers a few minutes later and Charlotte carries a 3-2 lead to the final period.

Charlotte gives the Moose plenty of chances late with penalties, but the Moose PP is impotent down the stretch, to the point where Gillis puts in an insurance goal on a shortie. Moose unable to score in the 3rd, and the final is 4-2 Charlotte.

1st star – Gillis 2G
2nd – Anderson 1G
3rd – Moog 33 saves

GAME #3: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose on the board first with a breakaway by MacLean. Andes answers later with Naslund. After that it’s all Moose as they throw in 3 later in the 1st, Gilbert, Propp, and Kurri scoring, and it’s 4-1 after the 1st.

Moose add single goals in the 2nd and 3rd, Maruk and Seiling while holding Andes scoreless, and the final is 6-1 Moose.

1st star – Kurri 1G 2pts
2nd – MacLean 1G 2pts
3rd – Propp 1G pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 explosive offensive games sandwich around a good defensive effort by Charlotte to prevent a perfect homestand. Moose gets a 50th win for the 3rd season in a row. Now if we can get the powerplay working.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two weeks to go in the regular season and every game is a big one for the Ducks. New Castle is in a three-way battle with Chicago and Dallas for the Division title – but only two of the three teams will make the playoffs. Home games this week against Ohio and Charlotte. The Ducks are looking to win both in order to solidify their playoff chances
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS New Castle comes into the game 2-1-1 against Ohio this season. Things start out poorly for the Ducks as they fall behind 2-0. But New Castle comes back with three unanswered goals to get a 3-2 win. The final: NCD 3 OHI 2. The Duck’s #1 line does it again as Kent Nilsson scores both the tying and winning goals (35), after John Tonelli got the Ducks on the board for the first time (33).

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Nilsson 2G
2- NCD Tonelli 1G 1 A
3- NCD John Vanbiesbrouck 31 saves

Ohio outshot the Ducks 33-30 but Beezer stood tall in goal to lead NCD to the win. Chris Kostopoulous and Mark Hardy went at in the second period with each getting 5-minute majors and a 10-minute misconduct. The two teams combined for 63 penalty minutes in what could be a playoff preview.

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Charlotte comes into the game with 2 wins in 3 games against NCD this season. It’s a see-saw battle and Charlotte prevails as they tie it up on a late goal by Charlie Simmer and then win it in OT on Laurie Boschman’s second goal of the game. The final: CHA 5 NCD 4 in OT.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Rick Middleton (34). CHD tied it with 56 seconds to go in the period when Charlie Simmer put #22 past Vanbiesbrouck. NCD regained the lead early in the second period on a power play goal by Mark Johnson (40). Charlotte came right back to tie it on a goal by Glenn Anderson (38). The see-saw continued as Mark Napier made it 3-2 Ducks later in the second and the score remained 3-2 NCD going to the third period.

In the third, Boschman scored his 30th, at 1:07 to tie it once again, now at 3-3. Kent Nilsson then put NCD ahead (36) with 4:23 to go and things looked good for the Ducks fans. But with 1:37 left Charlie Simmer scored his second of the game and 23rd of the year to tie it at 4-4. It went to OT and at 2:36, Boschman scored his second of the game to win it for Charlotte

Charlotte held New Castle to only 15 shots as they outshot the Ducks 30-15, including 12-3 in the third period and 1-0 in OT.

THREE STARS:
1- CHD Boschman 2G
2- CHD Simmer 2G
3- CHD Anderson 1G 2 A

Dale Hawerchuck had 3 assists as the Dynamo’s #1 line outplayed their Ducks counterpart. NCD’s Brad McCrimmon had five blocks.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks were 1:37 away from gaining the maximum four points. Instead, they come away with only two of four, pretty much insuring that the playoff race will not be decided until the final week.
