CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Action at Madison Round Garden features 2 games this week hosting Charlotte and Brooklyn….
Charlotte Dynamo @ CapJack Rangers Charlotte is in last in the Patrick Division but they certainly don’t act that way with CapJack. They take a 2-2 tie into the 3rd, then go down 3-2, then Perreault tie is up. Then Russell gets the Ranger the go-ahead goal with 9 to go for a 4-3 lead and BLAM – the Dynamo score 2 in the 4 minutes to steal one from the Rangers!! Yuck. And the game stats were pretty much even throughout – Rangers were a dismal 0 for 5 on the PP!!
STARS: (all CHD)
1. Anderson 2 goals
2. Hedberg 1 goal 2 assists
3.Lacroix 1 goal 1 assist
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers Already dropping 1 at home, the Rangers needed a rebound (and rebounds to go in). Well, Brooklyn starts the scoring with a McCarthy PP goal 6 1/2 in. Rangers match it 3 minutes later on a Lundholm score. Then Reinhart gets another Brooklyn PP goal 2 minutes later for a 2-1 Rats lead. But Dore finally scores a Rangers PP a minute later and it’s tied 2-2 and that was it for the first.

2nd-period scoring features Johnson getting a go-ahead goal for Brooklyn but that is followed by 2 CapJack goals (Shutt and DeBlois) giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead as the 2nd-period buzzer ends.

3rd period – Arniel goes off for elbowing for the Rangers midway in the 3rd but Crowder gets the SH goal to make it 5-3 CapJack. Down inside the final 2 minutes and Gustafsson tallies for Brooklyn to draw within 1. So the Rats pull the goalie and Cloutier gets an empty netter for the Rangers and a 6-4 lead. But that’s not the end. Brooklyn resigns to even strength and yet Osborne scores with 31 seconds left and now it’s back to 1 goal game, 6-5 with 31 to go. Empty net again – but the Rangers hold and the final is 6-5 CapJack.
STARS:
1. CAP Crowder 1 goal, 1 assist
2. CAP Shutt 1 goal 1 assist
3. BRO Reinhart 1 goal, 1assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 games, 2 points, tough Charlotte now 2-2-1 against the Rangers again gives us fits. Brooklyn – gives us a 3-2 edge with this win.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two teams in the middle of the pack in the Adams Division collide at Legends Arena, as North Carolina comes to Ohio. The second spot in the division is up for grabs!
North Carolina 89’ers @ Ohio Legends OHIO 6, NORTH CAROLINA 4

Seldom-used defenseman Rick Chartraw delivered a hat trick, including the game-winner in the 6-4 win for Ohio. Chartraw’s third score proved to be the game-winner at 10:26 of the third period.

The game was highlighted by a seven-goal third period after the Legends built a 2-1 edge through two periods. Bernie Federko chipped in with a pair of goals and assists for a four-point night. Tony Tanti also added a goal and two assists for Ohio. Milan Novy was the lone multi-point producer for the 89’ers with a goal and an assist.

The Legends had a rare high-level performance from its power-play unit, cashing in twice in three tries, while North Carolina had one score in five chances. The 89’ers won the shots battle, 32-21.

Steve Weeks collected the win with 28 saves, while Doug Soetaert suffered the loss with 15 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio wins its lone home game of the week. The victory moves it into a share of second place in the Adams Division standings with North Carolina.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games this week for the Ducks and they are BIG games – against the two teams, they are battling with for the Norris Division lead. First, New Castle will take on the Dallas Drakes – against whom they are 4-0 this season. Then, its long time rival Chicago who the Ducks have not beaten in four tries (0-2-2)
Dallas Drakes @ New Castle Ducks NCD 2 DAL 2 The Drakes get a big point against the Ducks in a tightly played game. After Steve Kasper put the Ducks ahead early in the second period, Dallas came back with goals by Bobby Gould and Ron Duguay to take a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to go in the game. Rick Middleton tied it at 11:34 with his 31st of the year – and that would end up being the final score.

THREE STARS:
1- DAL Duguay 1 G 1 A
2- NCD Kasper 1G
3- NCD Middleton 1 G

Ryan Walter won 16 faceoffs for NCD. Dallas outshot the Ducks 31-26 as Billy Smith made 29 saves for New Castle. Neither team scored on a power play as Dallas was 0-4 and New Castle 0-5.

Chicago Underground @ New Castle Ducks NCD 4 CHI 1 The Ducks beat the Underground for the first time this season as Barry Pederson scores the first two goals (44,45) which would prove to be all that New Castle would need. New Castle made it 3-0 in the second on a goal by defenseman Mark Hardy. Billy Smith had a shutout until 13:42 of the third when Dennis Savard (15) lit the lamp to make it 3-1. The Underground then pressed but with their net empty Andre Savard (7) scored to seal the win for New Castle.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Pederson 2 G
2- NCD Hardy 1G 2 A
3- NCD Savard 1 G

New Castle had a 37-20 edge in shots on goal as Chicago’s Pete Peeters made 33 saves. Pederson’s first goal was on the power play, the only power-play goal of the game for either team

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A good week for the Ducks as they get 3 of a possible 4 points against their two biggest division rivals. The Norris Division continues to be a three-team race between New Castle, Dallas, and Chicago. All three teams are likely to make the playoffs
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints play host to Dallas and Mackinac Island this week.
Dallas Drakes @ Saint Clair Shores Saints Dallas visits St. Clair Shores.

There was no scoring in the first period.

In the 2nd, Duchesne scores his 14th goal 41 seconds into the first period. At the midway point, Bridgman scores his 9th. Dallas scores on a power play, it’s Secord’s 48th goal of the season. The Saints close out the scoring in the 2nd, on a Huddy goal. In the 3rd, Dallas scores as Tonelli hits the net. But, the Drakes fall short.

SCS 3 Dallas 2

1- Huddy
2-Duchesne
3-Bridgman

Mackinac Island Moose @ Saint Clair Shores Saints Good close first period. With 5:15 to go, the Moose gets on the board on a Ruskowski goal. We go to the 2nd period. Doug Wilson ties it up with his 9th goal. 7 minutes later, O’Connell scores for the Moose. Then, in the 3rd, Jari Kurri scores his 30 goal unassisted and on a power play. And, that wraps it up from L’Anse Creuse Arena.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints split their 2 home games with a victory against Dallas and a loss against Mackinac Island.
Catoctin Cardinals
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Catoctin clings to a narrow division lead and hopes to separate from the competition!
Portland Sasquatch @ Catoctin Cardinals POR 6 CAT 6
Sutter scores 3 and Gretzky 2 as both teams fail to muster a 7th goal.
Texas Brahmas @ Catoctin Cardinals TEX 4 CAT 3
Flockhart scores 2 but Nilsson’s 2 propel Texas to the win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Cardinals turned in a ho-hum week with a 0-1-1 record.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Legends and Spirit come to visit Brooklyn and face a Harbor Rats team that is struggling.
Ohio Legends @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats A pair of power-play goals and another scored on a delayed call finds the Rats sitting on a nice 3 goal lead with 10 minutes remaining. Miroslav Frycer’s 20th of the season gets Ohio within 2 with 4 minutes left and once we hit the 2 minutes remaining mark, the Legends pull the goalie for an extra attacker. And as past performance has shown, Brooklyn excels at allowing those last minutes goals. Glen Currie scores 2 goals, both with an extra attacker on in the game’s final seconds to draw Ohio even for a 4-4 final.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats A divisional battle finds us tied 2-2 after one, then tied again when the Spirit’s Steve Larmer scores his 34th of the season with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. But this time it’s the Harbor Rats 4th line that nets the go-ahead goal as Robbie Ftorek snaps the tie with just under 5 minutes left. Once again the Rats face an extra attacker in a one-goal game in the final minute of play, but this time it’s Anton Stastny who finds the empty net to seal a 5-3 Brooklyn win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 points in a pair of home games and one thing you do not want to do this season in Brooklyn is to leave a Rats game early. The final minutes of those one-goal games see more action than the previous 58 minutes.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Legends and Saints come out to the Island for some hockey. The Lake isn’t frozen yet, so it’ll be a round trip boat ride on the ferry. Lysiak still on the DL but should be back in a couple of weeks, some juggled lines trying to compensate.
Ohio Legends @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 6, Legends 2 – The Moose first line comes out primed and lights the lamp twice in the first 9 minutes. Kurri first, and then Dunlop on the powerplay. The Legends respond a minute later, cutting the lead to 1 when Semko finds an opening by Melanson. The Moose line #1 adds one more before intermission with Dunlop finding an opening, and Kurri finding him with a nifty pass. 3-1 after 1.

2nd period is dominated by Ohio as they outshot the Moose 19-8. But Melanson is up to the task and stops them all. The Moose are equally frustrated on their end, and no blood in the 2nd by either team.

3rd period the 1st line roars back to life and adds 3 more, Smyl twice and Dunlop once more for the hat-trick. Federko finishes the scoring near the end, and it’s 6-2 when the final horn sounds.

1st star – Dunlop 3G 4pts hat trick
2nd – Smyl 2G 5pts
3rd – Kurri 1G 6 pts

Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 6, Saints 2 – A fairly even 1st period sees both goalies play well, stopping 25 of 26 shots by both teams. The Saints put the only mark on the scoreboard when Malone capitalizes on the powerplay. 1-0.

2nd-period things rev up quite a bit. Kurri ties it only 30 seconds in. The Saints struck back 4 minutes later on another powerplay, this time its McDougal putting the Saints up 2-1. After that, the sky falls on the Saints, and it’s a Moose stampede. Kurri and Smyl toss in goals in the 2nd, and it’s 3-2 going to the 3rd period.

3rd period, in spite of losing Dunlop to an injury in the 2nd, and then losing Lemay to an eye injury mid 3rd, the Moose add 3 more goals as MacLean, Kurri (Hat trick) and Eaves get scores for the Moose to make the final 6-2.

Free fudge for everybody.

1st star – Kurri 3G 5pts
2nd – Smyl 1G 4pts
3rd – Malone 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 4pts in 2 games turn things around from the mediocre play of the last 2 weeks. Kurri with 4 goals and 11 points is a team-best for back-to-back games. We’ll stop juggling lines and stand pat until Lysiak returns.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Dynamo, approaching 10 games under .500 and starting to make its preparations for next season, hosted St. Clair Shores and division rival Brooklyn during this latest week of play.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Charlotte Dynamo Saint Clair Shores, whose offensive challenges have offset an adequate defense all season, found some rare firepower in Charlotte, stealing this game late and shocking the Dynamo, 6-5.

Both teams frenetically exchanged a total of five goals in the last six minutes of play. Following a Charlotte goal by Bob Crawford that put the Dynamo ahead 5-4 with 1:38 left in the game, the Saints delivered a stunning one-two blow. Just 15 seconds after Crawford’s goal, the Saints’ Charlie Huddy found the net, and then just 15 seconds after that, Duane Sutter notched the game-winning goal.

In this slugfest where little defense was to be found, Saint Clair Shores outshot Charlotte narrowly 43-40. The Saints outscored the Dynamo 5-2 in the third period.

Three stars (all from Saint Clair Shores):
Star 1: Sutter 2 G, 4 Pts
Star 2: Gaetan Duchesne 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 3: Doug Wilson 1 G

Notable: Dynamo goaltender Andy Moog saves 37 but surrenders three goals in the final five minutes of play. Mike Liut finishes with 35 saves. Saint Clair Shores has now garnered three of its 20 points this season playing on the road in Charlotte; it tied the Dynamo in an earlier contest this season.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlotte Dynamo Charlotte continued to remain competitive in its own division (it is outside the division where it has mightily struggled), rallying in dramatic fashion and salvaging a 6-6 tie with Brooklyn Harbor.

This time it was the Dynamo administering the stunning counterpunch, scoring five unanswered goals and erasing a 6-1 deficit. The comeback was capped off by two consecutive goals by Charlotte’s Gil Perreault in the final period that ended the scoring. Perreault’s game-tying goal came with 2:57 remaining.

Brooklyn Harbor was led by two goals by Brad Palmer, including an unassisted tally 11 minutes into the second period that gave the Rats their seemingly insurmountable 6-1 lead — but hey this is 80s hockey, and this game was Exhibit A that anything can happen.

Three stars:
Star 1: CHD Perreault 2 G
Star 2: BRO Palmer 2 G
Star 3: CHD Charlie Simmer 1 G, 3 Points

Notable: Six of the 22 Brooklyn Harbor shots found the net, but the squad managed only eight shots on goal in the entire second half of the contest. Mike Rogers assisted on three Charlotte goals.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Playing in two home games with wild finishes, Charlotte is only able to manage one point.
