CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Division play continues as we go down the stretch and we host 2 teams we don’t do well enough with – Pittsburgh (who is charging hard) and Charlotte (who should be winning more….)l
Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers With a season record of 2-3 against the Spirit, we need to win and put some more distance between us.

And boy do we go about business. DeBlois scores in the 1st and then Ray Allison, Maloney, and Neufeld tally in the 2nd for a big 4-0 lead!

3rd PERIOD – where did this come from. Steen and Sittler score in the 1st 7 minutes to cut the lead to 4-2. Then Daoust goes off for tripping and Maxwell scores a PP goal. Then right after that, Cochrane goes off for hooking and Maxwell does it again scoring another PP goal to tie it up at 4-4!
Whew – fortunately Maloney gets his 2nd goal of the game less than a minute later and the Rangers recapture the lead 5-4!
So we are down inside 2 minutes, faceoff in the Rangers end – Spirit gain control, Bruce Crowder takes a shot – great scoring chance, but Garrett denies him. Rebound and Crowder gains control again – he shoots and this time he beats Garrett on the glove side and we’re all tied up! DRAT!! Well, that’s how it ends, a 5-5 tie (bleech)
The Spirit were 2 for 5 on the PP and the Rangers 0 for 5 – there’s the difference….
STARS:
1. CAP – Maloney 2 goals
2. PIT – Maxwell 2 goals
3. CAP – Deblois goal and assist

Charlotte Dynamo @ CapJack Rangers Teams are 2-2-1 heading into the game, and Rangers need to win – and boy did they! Again they get 1 in the first (Trottier) and then 3 in the 2nd – Lunholm, Russell and Crowder for another 4-0 lead going into the 3rd.

Then 49 seconds into the 3rd, Crawford takes advantage of Maloney penalty and scores a PP goal for Charlotte. Crowd collectively groans and buries their faces in their hands thinking of the Pittsburgh game. But the Rangers (and Lundholm) have different plans. They go the next 14 minutes scoreless, but Lundholm scores has 2nd goal and in the final minute he gets the hat trick with a PP goal to finalize the scoring and give CapJack a big 6-1 win!
STARS (all CAP)
1. Lundholm 3 goals
2. Crowder goal and 2 assists
3. Trottier goal and an assist
We did see 3 guys leave the game with injuries – Shutt and Daoust for CAP and Hedberg for CHD.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 games at home this week – tie vs. Pittsburg and win vs. Charlotte for 3 points. We’ll take it (as at least Pittsburgh didn’t gain on us).
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: New Castle plays two games at home – one against Syracuse (last in the division) and then a big game against Chicago as the Ducks and Chicago battle for first place along with Dallas. New Castle also plays its road game against Chicago (another BIGGIE) subbing for Stray who is running the MWHL Draft this weekend
Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks SYR 4 NCD 3 Looking for an easy win against the Bulldogs, the Ducks come up short as they lose to Syracuse for the first time this season. The Bulldogs fired 41 shots at Don Edwards who played well in the losing effort. The teams traded goals and it was 2-2 midway through the second period when Ryan Walter (25) put New Castle ahead 3-2. In the third, Tim Young tied it for Syracuse at 1:49 and Reggie Leach put the game-winner past Edwards with only 2:36 remaining.

THREE STARS:
1- SYR – Young 1 G 1 A
2- SYR – Perry Turnbull 1G 1 A
3- SYR – Brian Bellows 1 G

Greg Millen made 31 saves for Syracuse

New Castle Ducks @ New Castle DucksChicago Underground NCD 4 CHI 3 After being upset by Syracuse, the Ducks rally to beat the Underground in Chicago. Rick Middleton scored twice in the last two minutes to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 win. Mike Bossy’s 49th put Chicago ahead 1-0 at the 48-second mark of the second period. Trailing 2-0, the Ducks tied it on goals by Willy Lindstrom in the second and Barry Pederson (46) in the third. Defenseman Keith Brown put Chicago ahead 3-2 at 11:27 beating Billy Smith on a slapshot. Then at 18:00 Middleton beat Bob Froese to tie it – and then 1:28 later Middleton did it again to give the Ducks a dramatic win

THREE STARS:
1- NCD – Middleton 2G
2- NCD – Pederson 1 G 1 A
3- NCD Lindstrom 1 G

Billy Smith made 35 saves as Chicago outshot the Ducks 38-28

Chicago Underground @ New Castle Ducks NCD 5 CHI 2 The Ducks beat Chicago for the second straight game. Mike Bossy gave Chicago the early lead with his FIFTIETH goal of the season, at 2:30 of the first. The Ducks came right back to tie it when Middleton scored his third in two games and #35 on the year. Peter Stastny put CHI up 2-1 before Middleton did it again – scoring SHORTHANDED on a breakaway unassisted. Two minutes after Middleton’s goal, Bobby Bourne scored to make it 3-2 Ducks. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the second and long into the third. As the clock wound down and Chicago’s #1 line pressured the Ducks, Tiger Williams (on ice to shadow Bossy) scored a huge insurance goal to make it 4-2. Andre Savard’s empty netter made the final 5-2

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Middleton 2 G
2- NCD Savard 1 G 1 A
3- NCD Williams 1 G 1 A

NCD outshot CHI 37-32 as Peeters made 32 saves and Smith 30.

The Ducks played most of the third period with only four defensemen as both Doug Halward and Brad McCrimmon were in the locker room with injuries to a finger.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A good week for the Ducks as they beat their biggest rival – Chicago – twice to open up a 4 point lead on the Underground although Chicago has played two fewer games. Syracuse upsetting the Ducks spoiled what otherwise would have been a great week. It was quite a week for Rick Middleton, who scored four goals against Chicago, to give him 36 on the year. He is 10th in the league in scoring and second in shorthanded goals (2). New Castle awaits the results of their road contest this week against Dallas as the Drakes battle both the Ducks and Chicago in a great race for the Norris Division title.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game, against North Carolina, this week. Tom Lysiak and penalty machine, Pat Price also return from the DL.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 6, 89’ers 2 – Somewhat disorganized first 10 minutes as the puck moves a lot, but not many shots, only 6 combined in the first 10 minutes, NC kills one penalty, no blood. Both teams get some attack time, with the Moose getting 2 more powerplays, but the visitors kill both off. In between, Melanson stays perfect in his end, stopping all 7 shots, while the Moose get 2 goals, Napier and Terrion. 2-0 heading to the 2nd.

2nd period is a replay of the first. This time, 2 penalties by the 89’ers result in damage, with powerplay goals by Propp and Kurri. The lone Moose penalty is killed off, and the period ends 4-0 Moose.

3rd period the 89’ers show up and get going, or at least Wickenheiser does, scoring 2 goals in the first 9 minutes, cutting the lead to 2, and putting doubt in the home crowd. The Moose settle down and respond a little later with goals from Propp and Smyl to make it all better. The crowd goes home happy with a 6-2 win. Lysiak with 3 assists in his return, and Pat Price with a penalty.

1st star – Propp 2G
2nd – Wickenheiser 2G
3rd – Napier 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Strong game from Lysiak with 3 assists in his return to action. Now we wait to see how this group does on their 3 game road trip
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: All 3 Patrick division teams pay a visit to Brooklyn this week, can the Harbor Rats reverse their trend and climb back into the playoff race?
Charlotte Dynamo @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Brooklyn has not lost to the last place Dynamo this season and Bobby Smith gets the home team on the board in the first with his 17th of the season. But Charlotte counters with a pair of second-period goals scored just :90 seconds apart to grab the lead. First overall rookie selection Phil Housley nets the tying goal for Brooklyn before the period is over and we head to the 3rd tied at 2-2. After 13 scoreless minutes, Dave Christian snaps the tie, putting the Rats in front but the Dynamo pull the goalie and bring the extra attacker on, the Achilles heel for Brooklyn all season long. This time Brian Hayward stops 7 shots in the final 90 seconds to preserve the one-goal win. Hayward stopped 38 of 40 shots in the game. Brooklyn 3, Charlotte 2.
CapJack Rangers @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Next up, division-leading CapJack. Brooklyn has dropped 3 straight against the Patrick division leaders. A pair of Mark Johnson goals help the Harbor Rats head to the final period with a 4-2 lead but Keith Crowder and Ray Neufeld draw the Rangers into a tie game with 2:30 remaining. Andre Dore snaps the tie just :50 seconds later, CapJack’s 3rd goal of the 3rd period to grab the lead with :90 seconds left. This time Brooklyn empties the net and brings on the extra attacker and with just :36 ticks left, Darryl Sutter nets the tying goal for the Harbor Rats. Alas, there was still time left, and with just :20 seconds on the clock, Don Maloney hands the lead back to the Rangers. CapJack 6, Brooklyn 5.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats A pair of goals from Christian help Brooklyn to a 3-2 lead after one period of play. Gustafsson and Darryl Sutter make it 5-2 after 2 and Gustafsson nets his second of the game to make it 6-2 just 98 seconds into the 3rd as the Harbor Rats cruise to an easy win. Brooklyn 6, Pittsburgh 3.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 4 points in 3 home games, showing something but not enough as that loss to the Rangers saw the Rats blow a 2 goal lead, allowing 4 goals in the final 20 minutes.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Texas welcomes the Smythe to Fort Worth with games against Portland, Charlestown, and Catoctin. The division tries to keep up with each other by beating lowly Texas.
Portland Sasquatch @ Texas Brahmas Texas starts strong, scoring the first 2, but Portland scores the next 5 to go up 5-2. Texas battles back to get within 1, but can’t complete the comeback in an 8-6 Portland win.

Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints play host to Ohio, North Carolina, and Mackinac Island.
Ohio Legends @ Saint Clair Shores Saints The Legends visit the Saints at L’Anse Creuse Arena.

The scoring starts early as Scott Stevens gets the Saints on the board. At the 13:59 mark, the Legends tie the game on a Derlago goal. Jim Benning breaks the tie for the Saints with a goal later in the period.
It’s 2-1, SCS after one period.

In the 2nd period, Doug Wilson scores the only goal of the period, and the Saints are up, 3-1.

The 3rd period is good for the Legends. Ohio scores 3 straight goals as Roberts scores 2 and Ruff scores the other. With 3:24 left, the Saints tie the game on Doug Wilson’s second goal of the game.

Kurri scores his 35th and 36th goals for the Moose. The Moose also get 2 goals from Smyl, which are his 46th and 47th goals.

SCS outshoots the Moose, 34-18, but Melanson was impossible to penetrate.

Syracuse Bulldogs @ Dallas Drakes The Bulldogs go up early as Brian Bellows beats Glen Hanlon but Dennis Maruk ties the game at the 8-minute mark. Bellows scores again to put the Bulldogs up 2-1 at the end of 1. The Bulldogs kept the lead but then the wheels fell off. WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland splits the homestand but loses a crucial game to Catoctin
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends continue their limp toward the finish line of the 1982-83 MWOTHL season. Mackinac Island and Saint Clair Shores roll in this week.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Ohio Legends Mackinac Island 6, Ohio 3

Terry Ruskowski’s power-play goal late in the second proved to be the game-winner for the Moose. Paul MacLean added three points (1-2-3) and the Moose power-play unit lit the lamp twice in the victory. Despite the shots being even at 29 apiece, this game was never as close as the score would indicate.

Mackinac Island out-chanced Ohio, 24-10, and Gilles Meloche turned away 26 shots to collect the win. The Legends? Well, they watched six different Moose score goals and twelve players collect points.

It was that kind of night…

Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Ohio Legends Saint Clair Shores 3, Ohio 2

Duane Sutter’s goal at 17:14 of the first proved to be the game-winner for the Saints. In a game that saw a better effort from Ohio, it was not enough. The Legends dominated the shots, 21-9, limiting Saint Clair Shores to just four shots over the final two periods.

Dean Hopkins led the Saints with a goal and an assist and Mike Liut collected 19 saves. Corrado Micalef wishes he had a do-over for his Legends debut, making six saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio drops a pair at home and is anxious for the Draft Lottery to arrive! At 15-30-11 (41 points in 56 games), it is nearly impossible to believe this team is in second place in the Adams Division. Incredible parity between the three teams at the bottom, or complete dominance by Mackinac Island.

Bet on the second choice!

North Carolina 89’ers

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A blowout loss and a win. This team has no compass.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, while showing competitiveness, continues its struggles in the basement of this formidable Patrick division featuring Brooklyn, CapJack, and Pittsburgh. It hosted the latter two in this latest week of play.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlotte Dynamo Indicative of how much progress this team has yet to make, the Dynamo dropped its 4-1 contest against the visiting Spirit. The story of this game was the dual between rookie goalies, with Pelle Lindbergh (he showed signs of true greatness before becoming one of the more tragic sports stories of the 80s), who outplayed Andy Moog and saved 28. Moog by contrast saved 27 while surrendering three goals, with a late empty netter against the Dynamo by Bruce Crowder, his second goal of the evening, closed the scoring.

Another Pittsburgh rookie also stepped up with Steve Larmer also taking first-star honors. So there is your story: Pittsburgh top draftees Larmer and Lindbergh outperforming Charlotte’s top draft picks Moog and defenseman Randy Moller (-1). The game was otherwise evenly matched, nearly identical in SOG and TOA.

Three stars (all Pittsburgh)
1: Larmer 2 G
2: Crowder 2 G
3: Lindbergh

Notable: Larmer’s first goal, scored 15:18 into the opening period, proved to be the game-winner as Pittsburgh overcame an early 1-0 deficit and pulled ahead 2-1.

CapJack Rangers @ Charlotte Dynamo Against the Patrick leading Rangers, Charlotte rallied in a spirited fashion and salvaged at least one point with a 4-4 finish. CapJack led 3-0 entering the second period but late goals by four different Dynamo players — capped off by Anders Hedberg’s game-tying goal with 4:01 left to play enabled Charlotte to ultimately pull even.

For the second straight game, a Crowder thwarted Charlotte’s effort for victory. This time it was brother Keith, who opened the scoring 1:12 into the contest. CapJack, which never trailed received its other goals from Real Cloutie, Ray Allison, and the great Bryan Trottier, the last goal which briefly put CapJack ahead 4-3 in the third.

Three stars:
Star 1: CHD Glenn Anderson 1 G, 2 assists
Star 2: CAP Crowder 1 G, 2 points
Star 3: CHD Hedberg 1 G, 2 points

Notable: Backup goalie John Garrett saved 29 for CapJack. The Rangers were outshot 33-22 but Andy Moog was only able to come away with 18 saves for Charlotte.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte can only muster 1 point in two home games and it needed a big comeback to attain that.
