But as period 2 starts the Rats gets an early PP goal from Smith and then follow it up a few minutes later with a one from Stastny. Things are never easy. But Crowder’s PP goal later in the period gave us some breathing room and the 2nd period ends 4-2 Rangers.

BUT – those dirty Rats won’t roll over. Christian strikes early in the 3rd to cut it back to a 1 goal game. Then just past the halfway point, Peterson draws a cross-checking penalty and Trottier makes the Rats pay with a PP goal for a 5-3 Rangers lead. Then he adds an empty-netter as the Rats tried to come back, but the Rangers prevail 6-3 for the big W.
Brooklyn kept up a big attack throughout including 17 SOG in the 1st – and Resch stopped them all. They had 42 SOGs for the game!

Rangers got 1st period goals for Daoust and Maloney – then Maloney scored the only 2nd period goal and Crowder made it 4-1 Rangers early in the 3rd. Then Larmer got 1, Cloutier retaliated for CapJack and then Larmer closed out the game making the final 5-3 Rangers!

The teams traded goals in a wild first period and with the score, 2-2, Drake’s defenseman Paul Baxter lit the lamp at 18:06 to give Dallas a 3-2 lead at intermission. In the second period, Ilkka Sinisalo scored his second power-play goal of the game to make it 4-2 and three minutes later Bobby Gould made it 5-2. It remained 5-2 at intermission. In the third, the Ducks pressed and at 8:42 Barry Pederson scored his 47th to make it 5-3. In the closing minutes, the Ducks could not take control and were not able to pull their goalie until 1 minute remained – the move paid off as Rick Middleton put his 38th behind Hanlon with 12 seconds to go, making it 5-4. But with only 12 seconds to go, there wasn’t anything more New Castle could do as Dallas held on for a big win at the Duck Pond.

In the 3rd, Bridgman scores his 8th goal of the year and the Saints open their lead. Chouinard narrows the lead with a power-play goal for the 89’ers. With :51 to go, Taylor scores his 5th goal on an empty netter and the Saints win.

SCS 4 North Carolina 2

Protecting leads is the key. The Cardinals allow 3 unanswered goals to blow a 4-1 lead and walk away with a tie.

Texas and Catoctin have a “goaltending optional” night in this goal fest. Goring and Sutter both scored twice to get noticed on the score sheet.

The Cardinals get another key win. LaVallee scores twice to add the insurance policy to the win.

2nd period sees the Moose kill off overlapping minors early. They then take advantage on a powerplay mid-period, and MacLean makes it 3-0. Semenko obviously in a sour mood, fight with Smyl this time, and both get 5 minutes. Later the Moose kill off a minor, and we go to intermission 3-0.

3rd period sees Federko and Lysiak in a minor skirmish early, Moose kill off one more penalty. Tambellini adds one for the 4th line late, and it’s 4-0 when the final horn sounds. Melanson with a perfect 34 saves and the shutout.

2nd period – A great period if you like to watch powerplays. 6 powerplays result in zero powerplay goals and one shorty. Before all that, Stevens evens up the game with an even-strength goal at the midway point. Eaves with the shorty, late in the period, to make it 2-1 Moose going to the 3rd.

Babych and O’Connell in a minor skirmish early in the period. Other than a minor penalty kill by the Saints with 7 minutes to go, it’s a real nail-biter, one-point lead. Saints pull the goalie and get a little pressure on at the end until Park runs away with the puck and puts in an empty netter with only seconds to play. 3-1 Moose.

2nd period – Period opens up with a Babych penalty, followed very quickly by an O’Connell blast from the point. A Ruskowski penalty a few minutes later, and powerplay, sees Goulet cut the lead back to 1. That lasts only a minute, until Dunlop scores again from close in, and it’s 3-1 Moose with 14 minutes left in the 2nd. The Moose gets too aggressive, landing another penalty, and Goulet gets his 2nd goal of the game at the halfway mark, to make it 3-2. Minutes later, Lemay finds an opening, and it’s now 4-2 Moose with 8 minutes left in the 2nd, after a very active 7 minutes with 4 goals scored, 2 by each team.

3rd period is dominated by the Moose, who add 2 more goals, O’Connell and Kurri, and keep the 89″ers from getting many quality shots on goal, although they tally 11 SOG in the period.

Ohio sprints to a 4-0 first-period lead and looks to be in command. Unfortunately, they are piloting the Titanic and the iceberg is in sight! Four second-period goals by the 89’ers even things up at four apiece. Michel Goulet providing the magic with a hat trick in the frame.

John Ogrodnick’s 17th goal in the fourth minutes of the third proves to be the game-winning goal.

The story of the game came on special teams, as North Carolina was two-for-six on the power play, while Ohio was blanked in four tries. The shots were even at 27 apiece and Doug Soetaert turned away 23 shots, while Corrado Micalef re-directed 22 efforts.

The Moose have OWNED da’ Legends this season, coming in with an unblemished 6-0 record and outscoring Ohio 33-11.

Spoiler alert, nothing changed — in a 3-1 Mackinac Island victory.

Ohio made things interesting, as Tim Kerr scored 47 seconds in to give the home team something to get excited about. Then, it was crickets the rest of the afternoon.

Stan Smyl (50), Jari Kurri (39), and Mike O’Connell (11) did the damage for the Moose. Smyl and Kurri each adding a goal and two assists for three points apiece.

The shots favored Mackinac Island, 16-11, while the Moose were at play on the power play–cashing in on two-of-five efforts. Ohio was shutout in seven tries. Gilles Meloche took the win with ten saves, while Dan Bouchard stopped 13 for the losers.

Jari Kurri now has 39-65-104 on the year, while Stan Smyl is a point away from the century mark at 50-49-99. Those two have more points than the top four scorers for Ohio…
