CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers host Brooklyn and Pittsburgh as we try to wrap up the season and hold off these two…
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers Rangers start fast with 3 goals in the first 12 minutes of the game – Mike Allison, Maloney, and Daoust (PP).

But as period 2 starts the Rats gets an early PP goal from Smith and then follow it up a few minutes later with a one from Stastny. Things are never easy. But Crowder’s PP goal later in the period gave us some breathing room and the 2nd period ends 4-2 Rangers.

BUT – those dirty Rats won’t roll over. Christian strikes early in the 3rd to cut it back to a 1 goal game. Then just past the halfway point, Peterson draws a cross-checking penalty and Trottier makes the Rats pay with a PP goal for a 5-3 Rangers lead. Then he adds an empty-netter as the Rats tried to come back, but the Rangers prevail 6-3 for the big W.
Brooklyn kept up a big attack throughout including 17 SOG in the 1st – and Resch stopped them all. They had 42 SOGs for the game!
STARS: (all CAP)
1. Trottier 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Robinson 3 assists
3. Resch 39 saves

Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ CapJack Rangers The Rangers are again outshot – 30-21 favor of the Spirit. And Larmer gets #1 star for his hat trick – 2 of those in the 3rd period, the last with 14 seconds left in the game! But all that did was bring the final score to 5-3 CapJack as the Rangers tallied 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd to match Larmer. And Larmer was the only one who could Garrett in the nets.

Rangers got 1st period goals for Daoust and Maloney – then Maloney scored the only 2nd period goal and Crowder made it 4-1 Rangers early in the 3rd. Then Larmer got 1, Cloutier retaliated for CapJack and then Larmer closed out the game making the final 5-3 Rangers!
STARS:
1. PIT – Larmer 3 goals
2. CAP – Maloney 2 goals
3. CAP – Cloutier 1 goal, 2 assists

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers are happy with the hometown results against both Pittsburgh and Brooklyn! 2 ins, 4 points, and against the challengers…..
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week and it’s a big one – as the Ducks host the surging Dallas Drakes. New Castle has the slimmest of first place leads over Chicago and Dallas – and with road games this week against both Chicago and Dallas, this is a very big bunch of games in the Norris Division
Dallas Drakes @ New Castle Ducks DAL 5 NCD 4 After failing to get a point in their first five meetings, the Drakes beat New Castle for the second time in a row. Recently acquired Glen Hanlon was in goal for Dallas as the Drakes took a 3 goal lead and held on for the win.

The teams traded goals in a wild first period and with the score, 2-2, Drake’s defenseman Paul Baxter lit the lamp at 18:06 to give Dallas a 3-2 lead at intermission. In the second period, Ilkka Sinisalo scored his second power-play goal of the game to make it 4-2 and three minutes later Bobby Gould made it 5-2. It remained 5-2 at intermission. In the third, the Ducks pressed and at 8:42 Barry Pederson scored his 47th to make it 5-3. In the closing minutes, the Ducks could not take control and were not able to pull their goalie until 1 minute remained – the move paid off as Rick Middleton put his 38th behind Hanlon with 12 seconds to go, making it 5-4. But with only 12 seconds to go, there wasn’t anything more New Castle could do as Dallas held on for a big win at the Duck Pond.

THREE STARS:
1- DAL -Sinisalo 2G
2- DAL – Mullen 1G 1 A
3- NCD- Pederson 1G 2 A

Bobby Clarke won 15 faceoffs for NCD. Ex Duck Terry O’Reilly led all skaters with FIVE hits.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks lose their only home game and now anxiously await the results of their three road games, including ones against division rivals Chicago and Dallas.
Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago with 3 home games at the Capone Center this week & the crowds are full as they anticipate great matchups with division rivals, Syracuse, Dallas & New Castle.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Chicago Underground 3 Lead changes over 8 Goals was a lot of action one way at certain times. The Bulldogs & Underground played to a fierce tie at the end of the final buzzer. However, it wasn’t the Underground so much as it was Mike Bossy who netted 4 keepers.

Dallas Drakes @ Chicago Underground One Goal is all it takes to win a hockey game. Dallas did just that. One lone goal, midway through the 2nd. Besides that, it looked like a soccer game. Great action, but no scoring.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago comes out of a 3 game homestand with only 1 point to show for it and it is going to cost them down the line as they jockey for playoff position.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Ohio and North Carolina travel to St. Clair Shores for the week.
Ohio Legends @ Saint Clair Shores Saints In the first, Malone scores his 8th goal of the season for the Saints. Ohio scores two goals. They get support from Gainey and Crombeen. It’s 2-1, Ohio after the first period. In the 2nd, Doug Wilson ties the game. Roberts puts Ohio in front with his 5th goal. The Saints close out the 2nd period by getting a short-handed goal by Rob McClanahan. It’s 3-3 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd, Gregg scores his 3rd goal of the year and the Legends break the tie.

Ohio 4 SCS 3

1st – Wilson 1 goal, 2 assists
2nd – Roberts 1 goal

North Carolina 89’ers @ Saint Clair Shores Saints Only 59 seconds into the first period and Babych scores his 10th goal of the season for the Saints. Payne ties it up with his 12 of the year. And, with 2 seconds to go in the 1st period, McClanahan scores no. 15. After 1 period, it’s 2-1, SCS.

No goals in the 2nd.

In the 3rd, Bridgman scores his 8th goal of the year and the Saints open their lead. Chouinard narrows the lead with a power-play goal for the 89’ers. With :51 to go, Taylor scores his 5th goal on an empty netter and the Saints win.

SCS 4 North Carolina 2

1st – Taylor 1 goal 1 assist
2nd – Babych 1 goal
3rd – McClanahan 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints split with the Legends and 89’ers.
Catoctin Cardinals
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Catoctin is at home for 3 games and looking to get back to the top of the division.
Portland Sasquatch @ Catoctin Cardinals POR 4 CAT 4

Protecting leads is the key. The Cardinals allow 3 unanswered goals to blow a 4-1 lead and walk away with a tie.

Texas Brahmas @ Catoctin Cardinals TEX 6 CAT 8

Texas and Catoctin have a “goaltending optional” night in this goal fest. Goring and Sutter both scored twice to get noticed on the score sheet.

Charlestown Chiefs @ Catoctin Cardinals CHA 1 CAT 4

The Cardinals get another key win. LaVallee scores twice to add the insurance policy to the win.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Cardinals go 2-0-1 at home to hopefully help a surge in the standings.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games, all against division foes, Saints, 89’ers, and Legends make their last trip to the Island for hockey this season.
Ohio Legends @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 4, Legends 0 – Moose get on the scoreboard early, courtesy of the 3rd line, when Terrion scores just 73 seconds into the game. Moose keep the pressure up and Napier takes advantage of a 6 on 5 with a pending penalty, and it 2-0 only 6 minutes in. Except for a Propp/Semenko fight, the rest of the 1st period melts away peacefully. 2-0 at intermission.

2nd period sees the Moose kill off overlapping minors early. They then take advantage on a powerplay mid-period, and MacLean makes it 3-0. Semenko obviously in a sour mood, fight with Smyl this time, and both get 5 minutes. Later the Moose kill off a minor, and we go to intermission 3-0.

3rd period sees Federko and Lysiak in a minor skirmish early, Moose kill off one more penalty. Tambellini adds one for the 4th line late, and it’s 4-0 when the final horn sounds. Melanson with a perfect 34 saves and the shutout.

1st star = Melanson 34 saves
2nd – MacLean 1G 2pts
3rd – Terrion 1G

Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 3, Saints 1 – Lots of shots, shots, shots in the first period. Teams combine for 33 SOG. Liut and Meloche are nearly perfect, with a goal by Smyl, his 50th of the season, the only damage. 1-0 heading to the 2nd.

2nd period – A great period if you like to watch powerplays. 6 powerplays result in zero powerplay goals and one shorty. Before all that, Stevens evens up the game with an even-strength goal at the midway point. Eaves with the shorty, late in the period, to make it 2-1 Moose going to the 3rd.

Babych and O’Connell in a minor skirmish early in the period. Other than a minor penalty kill by the Saints with 7 minutes to go, it’s a real nail-biter, one-point lead. Saints pull the goalie and get a little pressure on at the end until Park runs away with the puck and puts in an empty netter with only seconds to play. 3-1 Moose.

1st star – Meloche 38 saves
2nd – Park 1G 2pts
3rd – Smyl 1G 2pts

North Carolina 89’ers @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 6, 89’ers 2 – A good hard-fought opening period. Each team kills one minor and O’Connell fights Goulet. It stays scoreless until Dunlop finds an opening and puts the Moose up with 6 to go in the 1st. NC kills off one more minor and we go to the break 1-0 Moose.

2nd period – Period opens up with a Babych penalty, followed very quickly by an O’Connell blast from the point. A Ruskowski penalty a few minutes later, and powerplay, sees Goulet cut the lead back to 1. That lasts only a minute, until Dunlop scores again from close in, and it’s 3-1 Moose with 14 minutes left in the 2nd. The Moose gets too aggressive, landing another penalty, and Goulet gets his 2nd goal of the game at the halfway mark, to make it 3-2. Minutes later, Lemay finds an opening, and it’s now 4-2 Moose with 8 minutes left in the 2nd, after a very active 7 minutes with 4 goals scored, 2 by each team.

3rd period is dominated by the Moose, who add 2 more goals, O’Connell and Kurri, and keep the 89″ers from getting many quality shots on goal, although they tally 11 SOG in the period.

1st star – Dunlop 2G 3pts
2nd – O’Connell 2G
3rd – Kurri 1G 3pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A very good week for the Moose which saw some different guys step up. Meloche with a 1 goal win, and Melanson 2 wins, 61 saves, 2 GA, and a shutout. 3rd and 4th lines lead the scoring in games 1 and 2, then the 1st unit racks up 5 goals in game 3.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends continue their limp to the finish line of the 1982-83 MWOTHL season. This week, Adams Division opponents North Carolina and Mackinac Island come to town.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Ohio Legends NC 5, OHIO 4

Ohio sprints to a 4-0 first-period lead and looks to be in command. Unfortunately, they are piloting the Titanic and the iceberg is in sight! Four second-period goals by the 89’ers even things up at four apiece. Michel Goulet providing the magic with a hat trick in the frame.

John Ogrodnick’s 17th goal in the fourth minutes of the third proves to be the game-winning goal.

The story of the game came on special teams, as North Carolina was two-for-six on the power play, while Ohio was blanked in four tries. The shots were even at 27 apiece and Doug Soetaert turned away 23 shots, while Corrado Micalef re-directed 22 efforts.

Mackinac Island Moose @ Ohio Legends MAC 3, OHIO 1

The Moose have OWNED da’ Legends this season, coming in with an unblemished 6-0 record and outscoring Ohio 33-11.

Spoiler alert, nothing changed — in a 3-1 Mackinac Island victory.

Ohio made things interesting, as Tim Kerr scored 47 seconds in to give the home team something to get excited about. Then, it was crickets the rest of the afternoon.

Stan Smyl (50), Jari Kurri (39), and Mike O’Connell (11) did the damage for the Moose. Smyl and Kurri each adding a goal and two assists for three points apiece.

The shots favored Mackinac Island, 16-11, while the Moose were at play on the power play–cashing in on two-of-five efforts. Ohio was shutout in seven tries. Gilles Meloche took the win with ten saves, while Dan Bouchard stopped 13 for the losers.

Jari Kurri now has 39-65-104 on the year, while Stan Smyl is a point away from the century mark at 50-49-99. Those two have more points than the top four scorers for Ohio…

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Another week, another pair of losses for Ohio. It’s a recurring theme in these parts….. We continue to find new ways to lose!

Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Spirit has 3 home games. Can they continue a push for the playoffs? We will see…
CapJack Rangers @ Pittsburgh Spirit First place CapJack roughs up the Spirit 8-5 on the strength of a bad decision by coach Chris Niespodzianski to start 3rd string goalie Mattsson.

“I didn’t even realize he was between the pipes until the puck was dropped.”

Lesson learned.

Charlotte Dynamo @ Pittsburgh Spirit The Spirit rebound from a crushing loss against CapJack to beat up on Charlotte a little 4-1.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Pittsburgh Spirit The Spirit score more than their opponent for the 2nd time in a row as they win 5-3.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Not a bad week. Just wondering what could have been if Mattsson was on the bench like he was supposed to be. Now we think back to a trade offer we received that could have made sure he wasn’t even dressed for the game. Oh well!
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Drakes play the Ducks
New Castle Ducks @ Dallas Drakes Doug Halward gets the Ducks on the board early but Joe Mullen ties it up for the Drakes. Billy Smith made some great saves on Al Secord and Marcel Dionne. The Ducks then score 3 unanswered goals as Don Beaupre is off of his game. The team’s traded goals in the 3rd and then Al Secord cuts it to 5-3 but Ryan Walters goal puts the game away as the Ducks win 6-4
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 0-1
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one game in the great state of Texas this week as first-place Portland comes to town. Things haven’t gone well for the Brahmas against Portland this year.
Portland Sasquatch @ Texas Brahmas Texas starts quickly with McKechnie scoring at the 17:37 mark for a 1-0 lead which they hold until the break. Nilsson gets #39 at the 9:58 of the 2nd for a 2-0 Texas lead after 2. Bannerman, in a miracle to rival the ’80 US Olympic team, hasn’t given up a goal. Nilsson nets #40 at 3:19 of the 3rd and Texas is rolling. Portland breaks up the shutout with Konroyd scoring at 6:14 and closes to within 1 on as Rota goal at 10:45. Things stay that way until 18:03 when Sutter gets the insurance goal and Texas wins, 4-2.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Lessard again comes up big and gets NC a much-needed win over their division rivals.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The bottom has completely fallen out for this team as the February part of the schedule continues with more intra-division games. The Dynamo were .500 entering December in the tightly packed Patrick Division at the time, but since then only have nine wins to show.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Charlotte Dynamo Brooklyn rallied from a 2-0 deficit and won 4-3 on a game-winning goal with six minutes left from someone called Bengt-Ake Gustafson.
CapJack @ Charlotte Dynamo CapJack and Charlotte continue their string of strong face-to-face matchups but this time the Rangers win 6-5 after a scoreless first period. With 1:18 remaining and the game in the balance, Bengt Lundholm gets the game-winning goal shorthanded. It put CapJack ahead 6-4 and the Rangers withstand an Ulf Isaksson goal with 9 seconds left.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT I SURRENDER TWO CONSECUTIVE GWG’s to different players named Bengt? You can’t make this shite up.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Again I ask, WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT I SURRENDER TWO CONSECUTIVE GWG’s to different players named Bengt?
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: one home game against the Dynamo, after a 1-2 beginning of the week on the road
Charlotte Dynamo @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Bobby Smith’s second goal of the game puts Brooklyn up 5-4 with under 5 minutes left. But once again, with the net empty and the extra attacker on, the Rats watch Charlie Simmer net the tying goal for Charlotte with :33 ticks left to end this game in a 5-5 tie. Tony Esposito makes 43 saves for the Dynamo.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 total points in 4 games is not helping the Rats, who are trying to remain in the playoff chase
