Chicago & the Bulldogs battle it out with some Spearing, Fighting, Boarding & 4 Major Penalties until late in the game. With under a minute left & the Underground fighting off the last few seconds of a 5-Minute Major, the Bulldogs blast one in from the point by Reed Larson & his 99.6 MPH Slapshot. WEEKLY SUMMARY: Another disappointing loss to open the season. Chicago hopes it can rebound on the road, as they only have one home game to open the season.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Well, the CapJack Rangers are halfway to feeling like the Buffalo Bills – 2 Stanley Cup runner-ups (or is that runners-up?). So they open this season with 3 home games and mostly a new squad – let’s see how they can do – it’s an all Patrick Division week!
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Well, crap – things start off badly, VERY BADLY. Charlotte gets 2 early 1st period goals, Boschman (1) and Simmer (1). Then a minute into the 2nd Boschman (2) scores again!! 2 minutes later it’s Anderson on a PP goal (1) and the Rangers are down 4-0 23 minutes into the game! Long season……

But wait – 5 minutes left in the 2nd, Keith Crowder (1) gets the 1st Rangers goal of the season. The period ends but the 3rd opens and the Rangers score 6 more unanswered goals – yes 6 in the opening 14 minutes of the period and are now up 7-4! Deblois had 2 of them – the 2nd a PP goal. Then Crowder goes off for 4 minutes for roughing and Russell goes off for 2 minutes for cross-checking (not simultaneously) and then the scoring really began as the Rangers popped in not 1, not 2, BUT 3 Shorthanded goals – Cameron had 2 of them and Korab the 3rd.

But things didn’t end there – Charlotte comes back, with Hachborn (1) scoring with 4 1/2 to go and then Hunter scores with 1:46 left and it’s 7-6 Rangers! The Dynamo then pull the goalie (backup Bester) but it backfires as Leinonen (1) racks up the empty netter for an 8-6 victory! CRAZY GAME!
SOG – Charlotte 27, CapJack 37
Each team had 28 scoring chances…
STARS of the game (All CAP)
1. Leinonen 1 goal, 3 assists
2. DeBlois 2 goals
3. Trottier 1 goal, 2 assists
Butcher for Charlotte gets 15 PIM!
Keans gives up 7 goals, stops 28 shots, and gets the loss. Resch is spectacular stopping 21 of 27 shots (.778 save percentage) – but he comes away with the BIG W!! (sarcasm there)

GAME #2: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS 2nd home game of the year – is there an encore? Kind of, sorta, well – YES!
6 first-period goals, Rangers Neufeld gets the 1st but then Bobby Smith ties it for Brooklyn. Silk gets CapJack back up with 7 to go and 30 seconds later Stastny ties it back up scoring for the Rats. Then Sundstrom plops one in the net for a 3-2 Brooklyn lead but then a minute later it is the Rangers tying it back up (3-3) when DeBlois scores. WHEW! But then the Rats take control scoring 2 PP goals (the 1st 25 seconds in on a carryover penalty for the 1st) as Johnson scores. Then 3 minutes later Housley scores and the Rats are up 5-3. But Silk gets his 2nd goal near the period midpoint and cuts the score to 5-4 Rats – BUT Wilson gets the 3rd Brooklyn goal of the period and 3rd PP goal in the period with 6 to go and Brooklyn takes a 6-4 lead into the dressing room.We open the final 20 minutes and Silk gets his 3rd of the game a minute in and now it’s 6-5. 13 seconds later the game is tied when Russell scores. Then the Rats end up sending guys to the resting box (for penalties) and the Rangers get PP goals from Cameron and DeBlois. And then with 5 to go, Arniel scores and it’s 9-6! The Rats get desperate at the end and Sutter scores making it 9-7, but that’s it and that’s the final. After 14 goals in game 1, the Rangers and Rats put up 16 in game 2! I think there were goalies in the nets for this one???? Yup Steve Weeks is credited with 13 saves and 7 goals (.650) but again he gets a W! Stefan (7 goals) was the bigger surrenderer for Brooklyn while Hayward plays 12 minutes and faces 4 shots – stopping all but 2 of them!
SOG – 20 for Brooklyn, 31 for CapJack
PPs were good, Brooklyn was 3 for 4 and CapJack was 2 for 3.
STARS (all CAP)
1. Silk 3 goals, 1 assist
2. DeBlois 2 goals, 1 assist
3. Trottier 5 assists
GAME #3: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Rangers get a Norris Division team in their perennial out of division rival Chicago Underground – but will it be another volcanic eruption of goals? Ummm, no.
But Chicago gets on the board 1st with a goal from Virta 2 minutes in. Then it’s the Rangers turn and Kromm and Crowder respond with 1st period goals for a 2-1 lead at the 1st intermission. Crowder and Stastny trade goals in the 2nd and it’s 3-2 at the 2nd intermission. So – we skate in the 3rd with the next goal being that ALL-IMPORTANT goal, either tied or a 2 point difference. 8 minutes to go the suspense is over as Gillis gets his 1st goal for the Rangers and they gain the 4-2 lead. Suave then scores for CapJack with 4 to go for a 5-2 lead and the defense and Resch make a respectable look at defense holding the Underground scoreless in the 3rd for a 5-2 win!
Both teams stormed the nets with Chicago having 31 SOGs and the Rangers 33 (100 total shot attempts in the game. 8 PP opportunities (4 each) and NO GOALS!
STARS (all CAP)
1. Crowder 2 goals
2. Sauve 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Resch 29 saves
WEEKLY SUMMARY: So, the Rangers are ready for the regular season to end after going 3-0 at home in the opening week. Not expected and it certainly wasn’t easy. Not sure, but the Patrick division might be in for some big-time scoring this year!
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Coming off an abysmal season where it hardly won at all during the second half, the Dynamo field a much more talented squad this time around, off the heels of a good draft and with players blossoming. However, it remains to be seen if this team can learn how to win — it hosted division rival Brooklyn in its first home contest of the new campaign.
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO And, the Dynamo revert to its losing ways, falling in a close contest 6-4 that was iced in the last minute by an empty netter by Brooklyn’s Mark Johnson. Charlotte clawed back from a 3-0 deficit but with the game tied at 4-4, Darryl Sutter notched the game-winning goal with 6:21 left in the game.

Johnson was the first star with 2 goals and 4 points. Charlie Simmer notched two goals for Charlotte in a losing effort (second star).

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte has an inauspicious start to its season.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland opens the season with home games against Texas, Charleston, and Ohio
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH In the home opener, the Texas Brahmas visit the Portland Sasquatch and Wayne Gretzky made sure to give the home crowd a reason to celebrate. With two goals in the 2nd period, Gretzky gives Portland the lead and Carbonneau adds an insurance goal in the third to make the final 3-0.

Texas outshoots Portland 35-21 but Reggie Lemelin was excellent in the goal to earn the shutout

Star #1 – Lemelin (Por) 35 saves
Star #2 – Gretzky (Por) 2 goals
Star #3 – Carbonneau (Por) 1 goal

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH This game was dominated by Portland and Gretzky has the overpower the Chief and win 7-1. Portland takes a 4-1 lead in the first period behind 3 goals from Gretzky and 1 from Anderson while Kisio gets the lone goal of the game for Charlestown. Howe and Hamel found the back of the net in the 2nd period and Cirella adds one in the 3rd period to finish the scoring for the Sasquatch.

Star #1 – Gretzky (Por) hat trick
Star #2 – Cirella (Por) 1 goal 1 assist
STar #3 – Lemelin (Por) 32 saves

GAME #3: OHIO LEGENDS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH The Ohio Legends enter Portland hoping to slow down Gretzky’s hot start but the “Great One” finds the net once again in the first period to stake the Sasquatch to a 1-0 intermission lead. Ohio responds in the 2nd period when Yzerman scores at the 6:17 mark and takes the lead with 39 seconds left in the period on a Derlago goal. Down 2-1 Gretzky decided to take the team on his back and evens the score at the 9:26 mark of the third to send the Portland crowd into a frenzy. At the 12:45 mark, Jackson earns a slashing penalty and gives Ohio a crucial powerplay which they converted on a MacLellan goal with 5:59 remaining. Ohio’s Linseman commits a crucial cross-check penalty giving Portland a power play of their own and despite pounding the net in the final 2:29 they were unable to even the score and lose 3-2

Star #1 – Gretzky (Por) 2 goals
Star #2 – Yzerman (Ohi) goal
Star #3 – Derlago (Ohi) goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland goes 2-1 on the homestand as Gretzky shows why he is the greatest of all-time with 7 goals in the 3 games. In the goal, Lemelin picks up two wins saving 67 shots, a .985 save percentage, and giving up 1 goal.

Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gone are Smyl, Dunlop and Melanson. Are Beers, Rogers, and Maruk ready and able to pick up the slack?

Ohio, Michigan, and Syracuse sure hope not as they travel to the Island for this week of fun on the ice.

GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 5, Legends 4, OT – Fans found out this is not the same Ohio team that won only 19 games last season. The Legends draw first blood after a MacLean boarding penalty gives the visitors a PP advantage and they quickly convert with a Derlago goal just 1:28 into the first period. Minutes later, Price with a penalty gives the visitors another PP advantage, but the Moose kill this one-off. A flurry of penalties around the 10-minute mark gives the Moose a man advantage, and they quickly capitalize and tie the game at 1 on a MacLean PP goal at the 12-minute mark. The Moose kill off a Beers penalty at the end of the period, and we go to 1st intermission tied at 1.

2nd period – Starts of with Beers and Roberts in a scuffle, 2 minutes of 4 on 4 results in nothing. Price strikes for his 3rd minor of the game at the 7-minute mark and the Legend PP unit come through with Rochefort getting his first goal of the season, 2-1 Legends. Ohio kills off a Linseman penalty at the halfway point. Late in the period, the Moose get some offense going and Beers evens the game at 2 just before intermission. A Tanti penalty late is killed off without any damage. 2-2 after 2 periods.

3rd period – The Moose offense continues from late in the 2nd, and it’s Lysiak with his first of the season to make it 3-2 Moose for their first lead. Price strikes again with his 4th minor (is he really on the Ohio payroll?) and once again the Legends PP unit jumps all over it, this time it’s Tanti with the PP goal, and it is tied 3-3. All juiced up, the Legends keep the mojo going, and only 2 minutes later it is the youngster, Yzerman, scoring the first of what could be many, and the Legends are up 4-3. A lot of nothing for 10 minutes until Root picks up a minor, and the Moose are smelling blood. But the PK unit of Ohio is up to the task, fending off the barrage, taking the lead into the final 3 minutes. The Moose pulls out all stops, and the goalie, which leads to a fairly fierce attack which results in a 6 on 5 goal by Beers to tie it up with 1:06 left in the game. And those 66 seconds melt away with minimal threats.

Overtime – OT is pretty short as MacLean gets his 2nd of the season. and the game-winner for the Moose in just 1:25.

The Moose are looking for anyone to take Pat Price off our hands.

1st star – MacLean 2G 3pts
2nd – Beers 2G
3rd – Lysiak 1G 3pts

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 4, Stags 1 – No powerplay goals in a game that featured 104 penalty minutes. 2 small fights (Babych v. Price & Carpenter v. Campbell) interspersed between 6 big glove droppers (Marois v. Beers, Carpenter v. Ruskowski, Messier v. Campbell, Bullard v. Price, Smail v. MacLean, Watters v. Price) and this is just the first of 8 games this season. Better get your cut men ready.

In between all the fights, some hockey took place, with the Moose controlling most of the play, 37 SOG versus 18 for the Stags. The Moose get goals from Price, Rogers, and 2 for O’Connell.

The Stags get one of those rare shorties from Goring.

1st star – O’Connell 2G
2nd – Rogers 1G 2pts
3rd – Price 1G

GAME #3: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 3, Bulldogs 1 – 3 penalties for matching minors and one major (Anderson v. Quinn) plus one minor on Ladouceur, with the Moose killing that one-off, ends up with a lot of passing and shooting but not tallies ………… Until the last minute of play when O’Connell fires in a laser from the blue line. 1-0 Moose after one.

2nd. No fights. The Moose kill off one penalty while the Dogs kill off 2. Moose continues to dominate play with 17 SOG to 9 for the Dogs. But the Dogs make their attempts count, as Neely evens the game at 1-1. on to the 3rd

Moose break the tie early with MacLean getting one from close in. The score stays 2-1 until a 5-minutes major by Fraser with 7 minutes gets the crowd smelling blood. But the Dogs PK unit is up to the task and fends off a flurry of shots. Play continues until the Moose get their offense running behind the Dogs net, and Lysiak finds Kurri open in close, and he gives the Moose an insurance goal, 3-1. The Dogs pull their goalie but cannot find the net. 3-1 final.

Milen with 45 saves awesome in goal.

1st star – O’Connell 1G 3pts
2nd – Kurri 1G 2pts
3rd – Beaupre 25 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Not often do you see 6 guys in the sin bin at one time! These Michigan Brawls are going to be fun to play.
In the end, different scores but the standings stay the same. Next week with 3 road games, could see a very different outcome.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends, looking to rebound from a trainwreck of a 1982-83 season — welcome rookie Steve Yzerman and several vets to Legends Arena. The first week, the club welcomes the expansion Stags from Michigan come to town.
GAME #1: CATOCTIN CARDINALS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 7, MICHIGAN 1

Ohio explodes for five first-period goals to end the competitive phase of the home opener. It took Bill Derlago 1:25 to score on his first shift of the campaign and Ray Bourque tallied the first of two in-frame at 2:18 to set the tone. Tony Tanti (9:06), Tim Kerr (16:58), and Bourque (19:11-PP) also lit the lamp in the first stanza.

In the second, Thomas Gradin (2:49) and Steve Yzerman (18:53-PP) extended the Ohio lead to 7-0 after two periods. That chased Grant Fuhr from the Michigan nets in favor of Ron Low. Low held off the five shots by the Legends in the third and Steve Tambellini potted the lone Michigan goal in the 7-1 verdict.

Tony Tanti delivered a goal and three assists for Ohio, while Ray Bourque collected two goals and a helper. Thomas Gradin had a goal and two assists, while Pat Riggin re-directed 30 shots to take the win.

The Stags outshot the Legends, 31-23, while Ohio was able to convert on two-of-four power-play chances, while Michigan was shut out in four man-advantage chances.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio wins its home opener and the squad already has two wins (in three tries this week). The nineteen-win season of 1982-83 may give optimism to the Legends fans after the first week. Maybe.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Michigan Stags begin their inaugural MWOTHL season, taking on the St. Clair Shores Saints at Cobo Arena in downtown Detroit. Unfortunately, coach Nick Polano will not have the services of John Ogrodnick, Dwight Foster, or Dave Babych due to various injuries. Recalled from the minors for the home opener were Michel Petit, Steve Bozek, and Colin Patterson.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS FINAL SCORE: SCS 4 – MIC 6
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Stags prevailed in their home opener 6-4, as injury replacement Colin Patterson put one under the crossbar, beating Tom Barrasso with just under 3 minutes to go in regulation time. Bill Gardner scored twice for Michigan while Troy Murray put a couple past Michigan’s Grant Fuhr.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlestown and Dallas make the trip to Fort Worth to take on the Brahmas to start the season. Texas is looking for much-improved defense and goaltending this year to have any shot at competing for the playoffs.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS An explosive first period saw 6 goals scored between the two teams. Andreychuk opened the scoring for Texas and the two teams exchanged goals from there for a 3-3 tie at the first intermission. Then, something amazing happened; Defense was played. The second period was scoreless and we went to the 3rd still tied at 3. Charlestown was dominating shots, 30-16, but Bannerman was standing tall. Play-wise, the 3rd was dominated by the Chiefs, outshooting the Brahmas 13-1, however, the one was a PP goal by Greschner, Bammerman stops all 13 and the Brahmas win 4-3.
GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Dallas makes the drive down I-30 to Fort Worth for the second game of the season. In a reverse of game 1, Texas outshoots Dallas 41-27 but Hanlon was game, stopping 40 of the shots. Dallas scores one goal per quarter and takes the victory 3-1.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Better defense and goaltending, but only one win on home ice. Penalties have been a problem and a lot of Brahmas are spending a lot of time in the box.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: SCS hosts Mackinac Island, Ohio, and Brooklyn
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Barrasso makes his MWOTHL debut and helps lead his team to victory. In the first, the Saints score 3 goals and go up 3-1 after 1 period. The Saints net goals in both the 2nd and 3rd periods to ensure the Saint’s first win of the year.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: SCS for the first time – it seems ever – wins 3 home games against Mackinac Island, Ohio, and Brooklyn.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago comes to town to play Dallas.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. DALLAS DRAKES The explosive Underground come to Dallas for the season opener. Bobby Gould strikes first deflecting a shot from Greg Gilbert past Bob Froese at the 10:10 mark to give the Drakes the lead. Chicago storms back 4 minutes later as Rick Vaive backhands a shot past Glen Hanlon. The game stayed knotted at 1 until the 14-minute mark of the second period when Patrick Sundstrom broke free on a breakaway to give the Drakes a 2-1 lead. 45 seconds later Marcel Dionne put home a tic tac toe feed from Joe Mullen and Rob Ramage for the 3-1 lead. The Drakes dominated play and looked to have a 2 goal lead going into the second intermission but Denis Savard score at the 19:57 mark to make it a 1 goal game and leaving 2:04 on Terry O’Reilly’s double minor giving them the power play going into the third period. Troy Murray notched Chicago’s second power-play goal from the same double minor to tie the game. Dallas then went on to score 3 unanswered goals from Dionne, Gilbert, and Alison to salt the game away. Final 6-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes go 1-0 at home against a very good Chicago team
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Opening night at The Duck Pond will see the Ducks take the ice as the defending Stanley Cup Champions. New Castle has gone “all in” to try to repeat as Cup Champs, making two big trades. Joining the Ducks will be All-Star Defenseman Denis Potvin and All-Star Forward Lanny McDonald. By strengthening both their offense and defense the Ducks hope to be a formidable contender in the very tough Norris Division. This week, the Ducks have three home games including two against Division rivals Dallas and Chicago. Last season these three teams were about as closely matched as anyone could imagine with Dallas and New Castle tying for the Division lead with 94 points and the Underground right behind with 93. It should be a great division race again this year as the MWOTHL welcomes a 5 minute sudden-death overtime for the first time in the regular season
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Lanny McDonald makes his presence felt in his opening game for the Ducks, scoring the game-winning goal at 11:01 of the third period, to break a 2-2 tie. Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the first only to see New Castle tie it before Joey Mullin put the Drakes up 2-1 before the first period ended. The other Ducks newcomer came through big at 9:08 of the second period when Denis Potvin scored to tie the game, setting the stage for McDonald’s third-period game-winner. An Empty Net goal closed out the scoring.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Ryan Walter 1 G 1 A
2- NCD Craig Ramsay 1G, 2H, 2 Takeaways, 2 BS
3- NCD Denis Potvin 1G

Glen Hanlon was sensational in goal for Dallas making 36 saves. NCD’s Barry Pederson won 17 faceoffs.

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS After being shut out by Bob Froese for more than 59 minutes, the Ducks rally with two goals in the final minute. With their net empty, New Castle made it 2-1 at 19:17 when newcomer Mark Osborne scored. Then with the clock ticking down it was LANNY MCDONALD once again playing the role of hero as he deflected a Barry Pederson shot past Froese with 1 second left on the clock! The game went to overtime and despite having a 6-0 SOG advantage in the five-minute frame, the Ducks failed to score and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

THREE STARS:
1- CHI Brown 1 G
2- CHI Dennis Savard 1G
3- NCD Osborne 1 G

Froese made 32 saves but was unable to hold the lead in the final minute.

GAME #3: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Lanny McDonald does it again, scoring two goals including the game-winner as the Ducks close out a very good first-week homestand. McDonald put NCD ahead 1-0 early in the first period but the Spirit came right back to tie it on a goal by Pettersson. With 2:13 left in the first Rick Middleton scored his first of the year, assisted by Potvin, to put NCD ahead 2-1. The great Steve Larmer tied it in the second but less than 2 minutes later McDonald (from Pederson and Middleton) made it 3-2. A power-play goal by Pederson in the third closed out the scoring.

THREE STARS:
1-NCD McDonald 2G
2-NCD Pederson 1G 1 A
3-NCD Middleton 1G 1 A

Bobby Clarke won 17 faceoffs for NCD as the Ducks outshot the Spirit 30-19

WEEKLY SUMMARY: An excellent opening homestand for New Castle as they get 5 out of a maximum of 6 points. Lanny McDonald had a debut to remember as he scored four goals, including two game-winners and one game-tying. The other high-priced newcomer, Denis Potvin excelled as well, scoring 1 goal and 3 assists. As high scoring as the Ducks were last year with the Ryan Walter -Barry Pederson- Rick Middleton line they may be even more dangerous this year with the addition of McDonald, who in the game against Pittsburgh played LW on that #1 line with Walter moving to center the third line.
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games vs Andes and Michigan.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS Things start off great, with a Mike Krushelnyski penalty shot just 48 seconds in – but Plett’s goal at 13:04 of the 3rd gives Andes the 5-4 win.
