Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Spirit surprisingly starts the season 3-1, but we don’t believe that will be the norm this season.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Texas only needed 19 shots to score 7 goals on Lindbergh. Future start Kelly Hrudey came in in the 3rd and didn’t even face a shot for his 15:08 in the net.

Texas wins 7-3

GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Larouche scores 2 and leads the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win at the Graveyard.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: This is more of what we anticipated for this season. Expect a fire sale real soon!

GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago gets out to a nice 4-2 lead after 1 period of play, but the Saints fight back in the 2nd, & ultimately shut down the Underground for over 35 minutes at the end of the game. Two late goals in the 3rd, but the Underground & put the stake in their hearts.

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago once again starts out solid, plays well & falters at the end. This time falters bad, as the Moose score 3 unanswered goalies in just under 2-Minutes, with 2-Minutes left in the 3rd period to tie the game at 6 goals each. Of course, the Underground buried their heads in the sand & about 4-minutes 30-seconds into overtime take the loss.

Final Score: St. Clair Shores 7 – Chicago 6 (Overtime)

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: MIM – Jari Kurri 2G, 3Pts
Star 2: MIM – Paul MacLean 2G, 3Pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Underground can’t buy a win. They are struggling & by starting out the season with only 1 Point in 6 Games, the aspect of a long season is brutal.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers host two powerhouse teams this week – reigning Stanley Cup Champion New Castle, a rematch from the class of last season. And Portland, who has the league’s top goalscorer in Wayne Gretzky, who put 10 goals in the basket in the opening 4 games of the season. Wish we had a defense…
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Here it is, the game the fans have been waiting for since the Game 7 loss last year. And as for excitement, there was no disappointment. Both teams showed great D – who knew this year’s Rangers had any. 1st period is filled with blanks with the Rangers outshooting the Ducks 10-7. But just as the period is drawing to a close Mantha is checked at the blue line, McDonald scopes it up, the Duck rush is on, passes to Osborne, the shot – SCORE, and the Ducks take a 1-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the 1st.

2nd period – wow – another tight-checking and low shooting period (8-5 New Castle) and no goals! Both teams had a player go off, but the Ducks PP was cut short when Walter drew the cross-checking penalty. So both sides ended up with abbreviated power plays. So, it’s still 1-0 Ducks as they skate-off for the 2nd intermission.

3rd Period – Suddenly it’s a totally different game. In the opening minute, Potvin scores to make it 2-0 Ducks. Then Bloomquist is nailed for interference at 1:02 and Pederson scores 40 seconds into the PP and it’s 3-0 New Castle (bring on the Brown Ale, we need it). The Rangers, however, don’t quit. DeBlois gets them on the scoreboard just before the 4-minute mark scoring it after winning the faceoff in the Ducks ends. The Rangers keep trying Ducks keep thwarting. The Rangers fire 18 goals on the net in the 3rd and with 6 minutes left, they start to miss Billy Smith and find the back of the net. Neufeld beats Smith stick side high with 6;10 to go. Then with 5:37 left, Daoust makes a great play getting one past Smith to tie the game!!! Garden fans are really going crazy after the major wake-up goals!! The play continues, both sides looking for an edge, both sides blocking the opponent’s efforts. The final minute of play in regulation arrives, still 3-3, Rangers dump it in, but the Ducks gain control, with 47 seconds left to tick. New lines, Meagher with the puck, slaps it into the Rangers ends, Ramsay gets it on the boards, to McCrimmon, to Shand, back to Meagher – shoots – GOAL! He Breaks the tie beats Resch on the low glove side and New Castle calls time with 32 seconds left. Rangers come out for the face-off, Trottier wins it, Crowder on as an extra attacker, they gain control in the Ducks end, but can’t get the shot off as the horn sounds – Ducks win it, 4-3!
STARS (all NCD)
1. Pederson 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Osborne 1 goal
3. Meagher 1 goal (GWG)
Billy Smith stops 30 shots!

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Rangers figure if they have to deal with Gretzky, they should start out fast, fire often, and hope for the best. Well, they fire 20 shots on goal in the 1st and 20% of them (4) go in! The first was a PP goal by Daoust 7 minutes in, then Silk and Ludzik score 2 minutes apart at the 13 and 15-minute mark and DeBlois finishes the Rangers 1st period scoring with a tally with 1 minute to go. Portland got 8 shots off on Resch, all stopped.

2nd Period was a bit tamer, 10-9 SOG lead for Sasquatch, but bigfoot only got one past Resch as Sutter scores just before the halfway point in the period. Silk, however, matched that goal with 3 seconds left in the period to really deflate Big Foot as the intermission arrives and the Rangers hold a 5-1 lead of Portland.

3rd Period – Rangers say, let’s make it harder for them and play more defense than offense – they fire only 5 shots on goal. 1 off them from DeBlois finds the back of the net and it’s 6-1 CapJack, with 13 minutes to go! Sasquatch is determined to get back into the game, and even with the Rangers in defense mode, they manage to get 16 shots through the defense at all over Resch. But he stops all until the final 1:04 of the game when Gretzky manages to beat him to make it 6-2. But that was it, no more and the Rangers win the game by the 6-2 score!
STARS (all CAP)
1. DeBlois 2 goals 1 assist
2. Silk 2 goals, 1 assist
3. Daoust 1 goal
RESCH – 32 saves!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well, the tough week starts with a tough loss to New Castle and ends with a big win over the Gretzky Sasquatch of Portland. We showed lots more defense this week, so that was a plus.
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A pair of home games to try to improve on our 0-4 start.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS A mismatch on paper, but we don’t play ’em on paper… we play ’em with 1s and 0s.

Charlestown scores 3 goals in the first to shell-shock Melanson and the Moose. They make a furious chargeback to try to pull it out, but ultimately fall 4-3.

Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The 3-1 Moose host the 2-1-1 Mountaineers in the only game in Bullwinkle Arena this week. Oddsmakers have the Moose a slight (0.5 goal) favorite.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 8, Mountaineers 4 – Both offenses come out clicking, wasting no time getting off shot after shot as the defenses look confused. As players are just beginning to get a sweat worked up, it’s Plett deflecting a shot by Picard into the net, and it’s 1-0 visitors. After Ludwig and Ladouceur get whistled for matching minors, the Moose take advantage of the extra room on the ice (4 on 4) and work it to Kurri who ties it at 1 only 6 minutes into the game. It’s just 2 minutes later when Plett is at it again, this time feeding Ludwig for a top-shelf shot. 2-1 Mountaineers. Things calm down a bit. The Moose kill off a stupid tripping penalty by Beaupre, and then late in the period, a couple of minor skirmishes put 4 skaters in the box. This time Andes uses the open ice to find the net, and Chouinard makes it 3-1 heading to the first break.

2nd period is dominated by the Moose. 12-4 SOG advantage and 6-1 goal advantage. The Moose transition defense takes over and gets rewarded with not 1, not 2, but 3 breakaway goals on 4 opportunities. In the end, goals by Giles, Rogers, Ruskowski, Lysiak, Propp, and Campbell are countered by only a single goal by former Moose, Stan Smyl. Jensen gets knocked out of the net, and we go to 2nd break 7-4 Moose.

A very quiet 3rd period sees just one tally, a goal by Beers (I’ll drink to that) making the final 8-4

1st star – Kurri 1G 3pts
2nd – Chouinard 1G 3pts
3rd – Propp 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The best offensive output of the year by the Moose and an average defensive effort equal a win for the Moose. Now 3 games on the road.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After a disappointing 1-3 start, Texas welcomes Capjack and Michigan to the Cow Patty.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS First Place Capjack arrived in Texas for a meeting with Bannerman and the Brahmas. This one turned into a goalie duel between Weeks and Bannerman. Crowder started the scoring for Capjack late in the 1st for a 1-0 lead at intermission. Neufeld added one for the visitors early in the 2nd. From there both goalies went into lockdown mode and the final score was 2-0 Capjack. Lots of fights in the first period and a half, but no fight in the Texas offense.
GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS This one was more like a typical Texas game! Texas scored three in the first to go up 3-0 at the intermission. Tucker, Sutter, and Rota got the goals for Texas. Michigan stormed back in the 2nd, with Carpenter and Messier bringing Michigan within 1 at the second intermission. Smail completed the comeback early in the 3rd for a 3-3 tie. Konroyd scored on a Shorthanded breakaway and LaFontaine gave the good guys a 5-3 lead. Turgeon brought Michigan back within one at the 11:38 mark. But another comeback was not to be as Andreychuk scored a PP goal at 16:04 to seal the Texas win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Another 1-1 week at home. Hopefully, we can finally get a road win and work back towards .500
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints host the Charlestown Chiefs.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Saints start off strong by scoring two goals in the 1st period. Verbeek scores his 1st goal and Federko scores his 2nd.

In the 2nd period, Federko scores another, and Duchesne scores his 2nd. It’s 4-0 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd, the Chiefs score 2 goals, and the Saints score one. Preston and Coffey get their first goals of the season, and Gustafsson scores his 4th.

SCS 5 Charlestown 2

Stars

1st – Federko 2 goals and 1 assist

3rd – Verbeek 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints defeat the Chiefs, 5-2 in the Saints only home game.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The second week of expansion Andes entry in the MWOTHL.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Ohio comes to town this week and the Mountaineer faithful are hopeful of a victory. That dream lasts for almost the whole first quarter until Kerr puts one in the goal with only 14 seconds. There’s still a glimmer of a comeback until Kerr scores again with 42 seconds left in the second. The third period sees more scoring with Ohio leaving with a well-earned 4 -1 win.

1 – Tanti 1 G 3 A
2 – Kerr 2 G
3 – Yzerman 1 G 1 A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes provides to be good hosts to the visiting legend as they give up 4 while only scoring 1 themselves.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome Dallas and Syracuse to town for the second week of the MWOTHL season.
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. OHIO LEGENDS Ohio opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the game, as Brian MacLellan snapped home his second tally of the season. Ray Bourque extended the lead to 2-0 for the Legends, exactly halfway through the opening frame. The first period ended that way and Syracuse held the upper hand in a torrid shots total of 20-11.

The Bulldogs got the only goal in the middle stanza, as Reed Larson collected his second goal of the campaign with a power-play blast from the point. The deficit was reduced to 2-1, as the teams headed to the dressing rooms. Syracuse once again held the shots advantage, 11-10.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 when Curt Fraser tipped in a shot at 3:13.

Then, all lights shone on Ray Bourque.

The Ohio defenseman collected the next two goals to complete his hat trick at 4:44 (power play) and 8:31 to open a 4-2 edge for the Legends. Brian Bellows lit the lamp with two seconds remaining to get Syracuse to the final score of 4-3.

The Bulldogs dominated the shots on goal, 46-28. Mike Liut stood tall in net for Ohio, turning away 43 shots, while Greg Millen re-directed 24 shots. Bourque had three goals for the Legends, while Pierre Larouche commanded the faceoff circle with 16 wins.

Syracuse threw everything at the Legends, taking 67 shot attempts (to 35), but Ohio was able to block eleven of those efforts. The Bulldogs were one-for-three on the man-advantage, while Ohio went one-for-two.

FINAL: Ohio 4, Syracuse 3

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. OHIO LEGENDS Rookie Steve Yzerman collected a pair of goals and added three assists for a five-point night, as Ohio defeated Dallas, 8-5. Tim Kerr (2-1-3) and Tony Tanti (1-3-4) also came up big for the Legends. Terry O’Reilly led Dallas with a pair of goals, while Greg Gilbert had a goal and two assists for the Drakes.

Ohio opened a 3-0 lead in the first period and a late goal by Dallas closed it to 3-1 after a period. The Legends collected the first two goals of the middle period to open a 5-1 edge and held a 5-2 advantage after two. The lead was up to 8-3 for Ohio, before a pair of goals in the last four minutes brought the count to the final of 8-5.

Ohio won the shots battle, 31-30. The Legends capitalized on their only power-play chance of the game, while Dallas was stymied in three tries. Mike Liut stopped 25 shots, while Glen Hanlon re-directed 23 efforts.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio gets a pair of wins and looks to be a better team than last season. With four wins in the first two weeks, they already have more wins than they did in the first month last season.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The defending Stanley Cup Champions have two home games this week- against Charlotte and against conference rival and much improved St.Clair Shores
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 4 CHA 3

Newcomer Rick Meagher scored the first goal of the game and veteran Craig Ramsey then made it 2-0 Ducks after one. The Dynamo’s superstar center Dale Hawerchuk cut the lead in half late in the second period. In the third, Bobby Clarke made it 3-1 Ducks at 3:16 before Anderson brought Charlotte back to within one. But at 17:32 Tiger Williams got a huge insurance goal and NCD led 4-2. The goal proved critical when Hawerchuk got his second of the game with 51 seconds remaining. With the Charlotte net empty the Dynamo pressed in the final minute but Don Edwards stood tall in goal as the Ducks came away with a hard-fought 4-3 win.

THREE STARS:
1- CHD Hawerchuk 2G 1 A 3 PTS
2- NCD Meagher 1 G 1 A 2 PTS
3- NCD Clarke 1G 1A 2 PTS

Charlotte outshot the Ducks 31-28. Clarke won 9 of 12 faceoffs

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS SCS 4 NCD 3

The 5-1 Saints are off to a great start with a much-improved team featuring a powerhouse offense that currently leads the MWOTHL in scoring. St. Clair Shores draws first blood as the MWOTHL’s leading scorer, Tom McCarthy, adds to his lead with his 9th goal of the year at 7:04 of the first. The Ducks tie it on a goal by Ramsey and the teams go to the locker room tied at 1-1. In the second, NCD takes the lead on newcomer Mark Osborne’s fourth of the year. Just over a minute later SCS ties it on a goal by Mark Taylor. And then at 11:44 of the second defenseman, Jim Benning nets his first of the year to put SCS ahead 3-2. The Ducks come out flying in the third period and it pays off at 7:07 when Tiger Williams ties it, assisted by Shand and Savard. It looks like the teams are headed for OT when the Ducks get too aggressive and McCarthy gets a 2 on 1 and puts the puck past Billy Smith – his second of the game and 10th of the year. 4-3 Saints. New Castle pulls the goalie, uses a timeout, and presses hard but Tom Barrasso is impenetrable in the SCS net and the Saints hold on for a 4-3 win.

Barrasso made 40 saves as NCD outshot SCS 43-25 including 18-9 in the third period.

THREE STARS:
1- SCS McCarthy 2G
2- SCS Benning 1 G
3- SCS Barrasso 40 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks win one and lose one and are now 4-2-1 on the season
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland hosts Pittsburgh and Charlotte
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Pittsburgh comes into Portland and silences the crowd quickly as Paiement finds the net at the 8:49 mark and Lamar adds a second one 45 seconds later to take a quick 2-0 lead. Portland’s Ciccarelli responds with a goal at the 15:10 mark on an assist from Gretzky to end the first period 2-1 Pittsburgh.

The second period was all Portland as they get 3 goals – 2 from Gretzky and 1 from Hamel on a shorthanded breakaway with 51 seconds giving the Sasquatch a 4-2 lead after two periods.

In the 3rd period, Pittsburgh tried to fight back into the game on a goal from Laughlin but Portland responded on another shorthanded goal from Hunter to win going away 5-3

Portland outshot the Spirit 39-26, won 30-47 faceoffs, had 9 more hits, and 21 more scoring opportunities as they controlled the game.

Star #1 – Gretzky (Por) 2 goals, 1 assist
STar #2 – Ciccarelli (Por) 1 goal, 1 assist
STar #3 – Foligno (Por) 3 assists

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Winless Charlotte visits the hot Gretzky and the Portland Sasquatch and this is exactly the reason you play every game. The Dynamo silences the Portland crowd in the first period as they explode to a 3-0 lead behind Poulin and Gillis in the first 2:14 of the period and another goal from Perreault at the 18:48 mark.

With 5:07 left in the second period, Charlotte’s Poulin gets his second goal of the game and Portland is left befuddled and frustrated. In the 3rd the Sasquatch came out with some energy and got a goal from Hunter with 21 seconds eclipsed and Gretzky added his 13th goal of the season with 8:08 remaining and you could begin to sense a comeback in the works. A tough tripping penalty on Sutter put Charlotte on a PP late in the game when Portland needed to get some attack and the Dynamo were able to withstand the clock to earn the upset win 4-2

Star #1 – Poulin (Cha) 2 goals
Star #2 -Perreault (Cha) 1 goal
Star #3 – Gillis (Cha) 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland earns a tough win against Pittsburgh but falls asleep in a loss to Charlotte

Bobby Gould gets the Drakes on the board in the second period redirecting a shot from Greg Gilbert. Risto Siltanen answers back for the Sasquatch. The teams go into the dressing room knotted at 1 after 2. Wayne Gretzky (this kid has a future I think), nets his 11th on the year. Mike Allison ties it up for the Drakes but Brian Lawton puts the Sasquatch back up 3-2 with less than 5 minutes left. Lemelin robs Joe Mullen and Andy Brickley point blank but Marcel Dionne ties the game up with a little over a minute left where the game stayed.

The Drakes came out on fire in the second period as Sundstrom, Mullen, and Dionne score all within the first 2 minutes of the second period to put the Drakes up by a goal. Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Charlotte MWOTHL entry struggles to find its footing early in the season with just one win to date and a top-heavy road schedule to start out. It hosted Texas in just its second home game thus far in week #2.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In a back and forth game the Dynamo jump out to an early 2-0 lead but relinquish three unanswered goals, including two by Pat LaFontaine that gave the Brahmas a 3-2 edge. Texas never trailed again, but leading 5-4 late, the Brahmas yield a Dave Poulin power-play goal with 3 minutes left to play and this game ends in a 5-5 draw. For Poulin it was his second goal of the game which catapulted him to first-star status.

Three stars:
CHD Poulin 2 G
Tex LaFontaine 2 G
TEX Poddubny 1 G 2 pts

Notables: Herron with 33 saves for Texas.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte gains only a draw in its only home game, and at 1-4-2 suffers a horrid and disappointing early-season stretch — unless it can right the ship with more upcoming home games (39 still left to play), the Dynamo may emerge as an early-season seller.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Winners in their home opener against St. Clair Shores, the Stags square off against Chicago, New Castle, and Portland with John Ogrodnick, Dave Babych, and Dwight Foster all still on injured reserve.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Mike Bossy’s hat trick plus an assist propelled the Underground to a 6-5 win over the Stags. The visitors led 4-1 halfway through the contest before Michigan made things interesting. The Stags’ offense was paced by a pair of goals apiece from Mike Bullard and Steve Tambellini.
GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Michigan appeared to have things under control with a 3-0 lead (Turgeon, Bullard, Carpenter [SHG]) and just over 12:00 to play in the third period. Then the Stags imploded. The Ducks got goals 34 seconds apart from Manno and Middleton setting the stage for Lanny McDonald’s game-tying PPG with 3:56 left in regulation.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Lousy start on home ice for the Stags. Goaltending by Fuhr and Low has been mediocre at best. Coach Nick Polano is hoping that the tailspin does not continue while the team awaits the return of Ogrodnick and Babych.
