Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago not playing well at all looks to get back on track. Rumors abound that Mike Bossy & Bob Froese could be playing in new uniforms by the end of the year. Does home ice give the Underground some advantage? It hasn’t in the past, but who knows.
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago storms out & is up 3-0 after 22 minutes of play, but the Harbor Rats bounce back with 2 of their own. Chicago gets rolling again & early through the 3rd hold a 5-2 advantage. Some sloppy play in the middle of the 3rd ties the score up with just under 2 minutes to play. Despite being more than doubled up in shots (41-20) Chicago prevails as the Savard & the Stastny, & Bossy line is on the ice less than 35 seconds later to notch the game-winner.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Brooklyn 5

Labatts 3-Star Selection:

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND This time the Underground rise from the dead as mid-way through the 2nd period the Brahmas are up by the score of 5-1. However, Chicago wakes up with a late goal near the end of the 2nd, and carry the momentum into the 3rd where they bang out 3 goals, play solid Defense & walk away with a “W”/

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Texas 5

Labatts 3-Star Selection:

Star 2: TEX – Darcy Rota 2G
Star 3: CHI – Denis Savard 1G, 3Pts

Game Winner: – Mike Bossy

Notables:
TEX – Denis Heron 33 Saves
CHI – None

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago wins both games on home ice this week & the Capone Center is rocking once again. If the road is solid with even a split, Chicago’s trade talks my die down. However, if the Underground stink it up on the road, those trade talks might intensify & lead to the League knowing Bossy & Froese could be available.

CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: High scoring Rangers host Andes and Dallas this week…..
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The rangers get on the board first with an even-strength goal from Russell just under 4 minutes into the game. And that was the 1st-period scoring. What happened to all that lighting up the goal lamps! The Rangers only took 6 shots. But defensively they played well and Weeks stopped shots.

2nd Period – Smyl is whistled quickly for interference at 18 seconds. Kotsopoulos takes advantage and gets the PP goal to make it 2-0. Then the Mountaineers went nuts. Goulet at 4:18, Naslund at 11:48, and finally Cowboy Bill Plett at 16:33, and Andes takes a 3-2 lead. Then Andes gets their 3rd penalty of the period (Sutter for Roughing at 18:00) and Trottier gets the PP goal tying the game at 3 as the 2nd period ends!

3rd Period – Andes decides to give the Rangers 2 more power plays but this time the Rangers can’t convert. Rangers try hard and finish the 3rd with 16 shots on goal (8 for Andes) – but neither team can beat the others’ goalie. Suave and Weeks hold steady and it’s off to the OT….

3 shots for Andes, 5 for the Rangers ZERO GOALS and we have a tie, 3-3.
STARS (home town writers give them all to CAP)
1. Russell 1 goal
2. Trottier 1 goal
3. Kotsopoulos 1 goal

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Can anything be worse than a 3-3 tie to Andes? How about a 2-2 tie to Dallas. Yes, the Rangers skate to another tie. The Rangers get the 1st-period goal by Larry Robinson. Then Langway ties it in the 2nd. Rangers go up 2-1 6 minutes into the 3rd on a Daoust goal and then Ron Duguay (who should be on the Rangers) ties it with 6 to go in regulation. And the overtime is again scoreless. Hanlon and Resch are very good (though the shot totals were 26 for Dallas and 25 for CapJack).
STARS:
1. (CAP) – Daoust 1 goal, 1 assist
2. (CAP) – Robinson 1 goal
3. (DAL) – Langqay 1 goal
Flockhart (DAL) and Wickenheiser (CAP) each accumulated 15 minutes of penalties from a big fighting sequence in the 1st (most action of the game). Kotsopoulos and Blomqvist also go off for fighting for the Rangers as do Gilbert and Dione. 50 PIM from that fight sequence! Neufeld (CAP) and Baxter (DAL) also go off for fighting near the end of the chippy 1st. The 2nd and 3rd periods had their fair share of whistles as well. Dallas accumulated 40 PIM while CapJack had a mere 38!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well after 2 games and 2 ties all I can say is it’s better than 2 losses……..

Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas lone home game is against Pittsburgh
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. DALLAS DRAKES Dallas comes out and puts the Spirit on their heels right from the hop. Despite Pelle Lindbergh robbing Patrick Sundstrom, Marcel Dionne shoveled home the rebound to put the Drakes up 2:24 into the first period. Ron Duguay scored on the power play and the Drakes went into the first intermission up 2-0. Steve Payne cut the lead in half for the Spirit but Ron Flockhart and Joe Mullen both scores for the Drakes and the game stayed that way till the end…..4-1 Drakes
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes win their only game
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games for the Ducks this week. First, against the Charlestown Chiefs, the team that they made two offseason trades with. Former Ducks Marian Stastny and Kari Eloranta will return to the Duck Pond for the first time since winning the Stanley Cup. After that, it’s the very tough Mackinac Island Moose -who the Ducks beat in the Conference Finals last season.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 4 CHA 3

Ducks take a 4-1 lead and hold on for the win. Barry Pederson scored twice (4,5) and Tiger Wiliams (3) and Rick Middleton (4) followed with goals – all in the first period – as the Ducks shot out to a 4-1 lead. New Castle outshot Charlestown 17-8 in the period.
After that Charleston dominated, outshooting the Ducks 28-24 in the last two periods. Charlestown made it 4-2 early in the second on a score by Al MacInnis (2). Don Edwards was solid in goal for the Ducks. With 39 seconds left, rookie Kelly Kisio scored for the Chiefs – his SIXTH of the year. But that was all as the Ducks held on for the victory

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Pederson 2G 1 A 3 PTS
2- NCD Middleton 1G 2A 3 PTS
3- CHA Bernie Nicholls 1G 2 A 3 PTS

Don Edwards made 33 saves for the Ducks. Dan Bouchard stopped 37 for the Chiefs

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS These two bitter rivals have met in the playoffs the last two seasons. Last year, the Ducks beat the Moose in six games to advance to the Finals. Will the Moose get revenge?
the Moose start fast scoring two first-period goals while outshooting NCD 17-8 in the period. Dan Quinn got his first and Jarri Kurri his 5th to make it 2-0 after one.
In the second, Quinn scored again and the Moose led 3-0 as they dominated play. Don Beaupre was stopping everything and the Moose were holding the Duck’s high-powered offense to very few shots. then came the turning point of the game… at 18:28 of the second period Rick Middleton, from Pederson and Snepts, scored (5) to make it 3-1. And suddenly the crowd was into it and MO-mentum had shifted.
The Ducks come out flying in the third and at 11:33 it paid off when Andre Savard deflected in a shot by Ryan Walter. 3-2 Moose with under 9 minutes to go. It’s a close-checking contest the rest of the way. MIM continues to storm the Ducks zone but Billy Smith is hot now in goal. And then with 3:34 left Barry Pederson puts the puck past Beaupre and the Ducks have tied it at 3-3. The tension is high at the Duck Pond as OT looms. But then with 56 seconds left on the clock, Lanny McDonald does it again – he scores (6) from Potvin and Snepts for his third game-winning goal of the young season (tied with Gretzky for most GWG). Incredibly, the Ducks have come all the way back to take the lead. Six seconds later an empty-net goal by Potvin seals the 5-3 victory. It was a very tough loss for the Moose but they look forward to seeing the Ducks again at Bullwinkle Arena.THREE STARS:
1- MIM Dan Quinn 2 G
2- NCD Pederson 1G 1 A 2 PTS
3- NCD Middleton 1G 1 A 2 PTSSmith made 35 saves as MIM outshot NCD 38-22! Mark Hardy got 15 PIM with a fighting major and misconduct, after brawling with Pat Price in the second period
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks win both games at home and improve to 6-2-2. The Clarence Campbell Conference is much improved this season, with Syracuse, St. Clair Shores, and Ohio all off to very good starts joining perennial contenders Mackinac Island, Chicago, and Dallas in the battle for playoff spots
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game in Fort Worth this week sees Brooklyn come to town for some good BBQ and hopefully a butt whooping. Texas still has trouble with penalties but the goaltending has been better (so far)
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Nothing good to say about this game for the Brahmas. Brooklyn gets one in the first from Sundstrom and one in the second from Smith for a 2-0 lead after 2. Andreychuk cuts it to 2-1 but Christian and Gartner make it 4-1 bad guys. The Brahmas pull Bannerman and McCarthy quickly makes it 5-1. The teams trade a few EN and 6-5 goals and it ends 8-3 Brooklyn.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well, Brooklyn came to town and had the good BBQ, but also provided the whoopin’. Lots of work still to do it Texas.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends host a pair of foes from outside the Adams Division this week, as Texas and Capjack visit Legends Arena.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 5, TEXAS 4 OT

Steve Yzerman’s second goal of the night at 3:27 of overtime gave the Ohio Legends a 5-4 win over the Texas Brahmas. Ohio held a 4-1 lead late in the second period before a pair of goals by Pat Lafontaine and a tally by Pat Hughes. Knotted the game at four apiece.

Mike Liut stopped 19 shots in the win, while Murray Bannerman turned away 24 shots in defeat. Ohio held the upper hand in shots, 29-23. The Brahmas capitalized on two of three power-play chances, while the Legends scored once in five efforts.

GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 5, CAPJACK 3

Steve Yzerman’s natural hat trick in a 6:58 stretch between the first and second periods helped Ohio open a 5-0 lead, en route to a 5-3 win over CapJack. The Rangers scored the last three goals, all in the third period to close the gap before time ran out on their rally. Capjack tilted the ice in its direction in the third period, outshooting Ohio, 17-1, in the final frame.

Mike Liut stopped 26 shots in the win, collecting his fourth victory of the season. Glenn Resch stopped 13 shots in the defeat.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Steve Yzerman tallies fives goals and an assist in the two home games during the week. Ohio claims a pair of wins at home, its fifth and sixth wins of the year. Last season, the Legends did not win their sixth game until November 23 against Catoctin.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland hosts Saint Clair and Chicago

SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS.

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

The Adams Division-leading Saint Clair Shores visit the Smythe Division-leading Portland Sasquatch in an early-season premier match-up.

Period 1 – The first period was evenly matched as both teams tried to maintain control but after 7 shots apiece neither team was able to score in the first 20 minutes

Period 2 – Portland outshoots Saint Clair 14-6 in the period but the Saints Federko (5) was able to find the back of the net 4:13 into the period to stake Saint Clair to a 1-0 lead after two periods

Period 3 – Portland once again outshoots Saint Clair 9-5 in the period and was able to even the score as Gretzky finds Ciccarelli (2) open and he capitalizes on the opportunity 9:01 into the period to even the score 1-1

Overtime – Neither team was able to score in the extra 5 minutes and we end in a tie

Star #1 – Ciccarelli 1 goal
Star #2 – Barrasso 33 saves

CHICAGO UNDERGROUND

 VS.

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

Chicago (1-6-1) visits Portland and pulls an upset on the road

Portland jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Cyr (1) and Howe (2) but Anderson (3) responds late in the period to cut the lead 2-1. In the two ensuing periods, the game was dominated by the Underground as Vaive (3) scores in the second period and Bossy (6) and Anderson (4) net goals in the third to lead Chicago to a 4-2 win with 4 unanswered goals

Star #1 – Anderson 2 goals
Star #2 – Broduer 45 saves
Star #3 – Vaive 1 goal

Portland outshoots Chicago 47-25 but still lose the game

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland has a tough homestand earning a tie with Saint Clair and a loss to Chicago as they outshoot their opponents 81-44 in the two games but can not earn a win
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Stags continued to flounder with 2 regulation losses and one in overtime.
GAME #1:

PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. MICHIGAN STAGS

Sean McKenna notches a pair as Portland defeats Michigan 6-4. The visitors blew the game open in the third period, outscoring Michigan 3-1. Bill Gardner puts two past Lemelin for the Stags. Randy Velischek and Nick Fotiu made their season debuts for the home squad.
GAME #2:

ANDES MOUNTAINEERS

VS.

MICHIGAN STAGS

Michigan dominates this one offensively but is betrayed by a weak performance in net by Grant Fuhr, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Mountaineers. The Stags outshot the visitors 37-19 and had a TOA of 5:47 compared to their opponent’s 2:41. Michigan’s PP went 0-5 while Andes cashed in on 2 of 4 chances with the extra man.
GAME #3:

DALLAS DRAKES VS. MICHIGAN STAGS

Mike Bullard nets his 6th with 1:23 to go in the third period to tie the score but then lose in OT 5-4 when Joe Mullen roofs one past Ron Low.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Michigan’s tailspin on home ice continues, as their home record drops to 1-4-1. The team is having no problem scoring but keeping the puck out of the Stags’ net continues to be a problem.
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game this week.

Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: At last report, the Dynamo had picked up where they left off during last season’s last-place fiasco, with one win in its first seven games to start this new campaign. This week, a 3-game slate, entirely in its own arena, gives the squad the opportunity to right the ship in a still very early season.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte, sparked by two goals from Charlie Simmer, grabbed a first-period 3-1 lead and won just its second contest of the year, a 5-2 win. The first-period goal by Andes’ Doug Gilmour narrowed an early deficit to 2-1, prior to two unanswered goals by Simmer that put Charlotte ahead 4-1. Jim Fox made it close in the third on a goal from an assist from Neal Broten, but an empty netter from Charlotte’s Glenn Anderson with 13 seconds left ended any doubt.

Three stars all from Charlotte:
1.)Simmer 2 G 3 pts
2.)Glenn Anderson 1 G 3 Points
3.)Randy Moller (1 Goal)

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Simmer again shined for Charlotte with yet another team-leading two-goal performance as the Dynamo won this time 5-3. Following a 1-1 tie at the first intermission, Charlotte outscored the Chiefs 2-1 in both the second and third periods. Simmer notched a second-period power-play goal and added an even-strength goal on an Anderson assist 2:50 into the third, the latter goal closing the scoring. Charlotte goalie Alan Bester stopped the Chiefs the rest of the way and outplayed Dan Bouchard (30 saves to 20).

Three stars (all Charlotte)
1. Simmer 2 G 3 Points
2. Anderson 1 G 2 Pts
3. Dale Hawerchuk (3 assists)

GAME #3: OHIO LEGENDS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Against the Legends, Charlotte needed a hat-trick from Hawerchuk followed by a Simmer-saving goal with a mere 20 ticks left on the clock to salvage a 5-5 tie. Ohio’s balanced attack (five different players recorded goals) grabbed a 5-3 early third-period lead as Hall of Famers Bob Gainey and Steve Yzerman (talk about legends!) each found the net. But two desperation goals in the final two minutes of the third from Hawerchuk and Simmer rallied the Dynamo and allowed them to clinch at least a point.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1. Hawerchuk (hat trick, 4 points)
2. Anderson 1 G, 3 pts
3. Simmer 1 G, 3 points

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Led this entire week by Charlie Simmer, Charlotte gets a much-needed early-season boost, recording five out of a possible six points during a potential season-saving home stretch, this following multiple road losses that started this campaign — the promising week thrusts the Dynamo back into the division race.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: St Clair vs Andes
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Mountaineers welcome Adams leading St Clair for their Week 3 matchup. The Saints come out like gangbusters in the opening period and pepper the Mountaineer goal. They are rewarded when Mark Taylor scores with 1:18 left in the period to put the visitors up 1 – 0. This seems to wake up the Mountaineers who storm back to take a 2 – 1 lead behind Goulet and Gilmour. The 3rd period starts off well for Saints as they tie it up only 29 seconds in when Gustafsson puts it past Sauve. Both teams go back and forth and we’re headed for a tie. But it’s not meant to go the Mountaineers way and with 1:37 left in the period, Bridgman breaks the hearts of the Mountaineer faithful.

1st Star – Gustaffson
2nd Star – Bridgeman
3rd Star – Taylor

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes goes 0 – 1 at home this week
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 more home games before a stretch of 10 road games in the following 14 games. We are NOT looking forward to the rest of November. Pack well.

Dallas, Chicago, and Pittsburgh come to the Island for some fudge, beer, and hockey.

GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 4, Drakes 3 – Drakes must have eaten a little too much fudge, or maybe it was the $500 beer bill, but they only manage 4 SOG in the first period. The Moose control play and it shows on the scoreboard with 2 goals from Kurri. Langway and MacLean in a little scuffle. Both teams killed off one penalty. 2-0 at intermission.

Maybe a good bathroom break has invigorated the visitors, they come out roaring on the powerplay, and Dionne scores just 42 seconds into the 2nd period. The sleepy crowd wakes up and we have a game. Dallas then kills their own momentum with back-to-back minors but kills both off. Tension escalated until we have a really good fight just past the midway mark, Even the goalies getting into it. O’Reilly and Baron for Dallas, Melanson, and Rogers for the Moose. penalty boxes looking like they should. Veitch gets called for tripping just as play reconvenes. The Moose take advantage of the 5 on 4 and Beers pushes the lead back to 2, 3-1. A couple of minutes later it’s Lysiak on a lucky rebound shot, making it 4-1 Moose, and the fans get an early start on 2nd intermission beers.

3rd period sees the Drakes start hot again, Sundstrom with a very quick goal to make it interesting at 4-2. Dallas tilts the ice a little in their favor with more shots, but Melanson is up to task through the period, making the 2 point lead stand until late when Dallas pulls their goalie. Mullen scores with 75 seconds remaining and the crowd urges the Moose to stand tall. Faceoff followed by the Drakes getting the puck into the zone. Mullen shoots, Quinn blocks, Langway shoots, Price blocks, Brickley shoots, Quinn blocks, Mullen shoots, Melanson save, rebound, Dionne wraparound, Melanson save, Langway shot, Melanson save, Brickley shot, Melanson save, Ramage shot, Price block, Brickley shot, Melanson save, Brickley shot, Price block and finally the Moose able to control the puck and kill the clock. 10 attempts in one minute of play. Freakin’ shooting gallery. Moose hang on barely.

1st star – Kurri 2G 3pts
2nd star – Dionne 1G 3pts
3rd Lysiak 1G 2pts

GAME #2:

CHICAGO UNDERGROUND

VS.

MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE

Moose 6, Underground 4 – Chicago on the board early as Vaive scores before 2 minutes come off the board. Then a really entertaining fight between Holmgren and MacLean which earns both 5 minutes off, plus a bonus of 10 minutes for Holmgren. After that, the first 2 periods are all Moose. A hat-trick by Quinn, and goals by Kurri, Lysiak, and Maruk put a 6 on the board for the home team. Bossy adds one for the visitors. It’s 6-2 after 2.

Chicago makes it interesting with goals by Bossy and Chabot to put the winner in question just 8 minutes into the 3rd period. The defense steps up, and in spite of 17 SOG by Chicago in the period, the Moose keep the lamp cold the rest of the way and cling to the 6-4 win.

1st star Quinn – hat trick
2nd Kurri 1G 3pts
3rd Bossy 2G

GAME #3: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 5, Spirit 1 – A fairly even 1st period sees the Moose take the early lead for once, with a goal by Quinn. Maxwell and Price with a little skirmish midway in the period. Then Both teams kill off a minor. The visitors even the game at 1 with a goal by Larmer. Off to intermission tied at 1.

The Moose crank up the defense and hold the Spirit to only 11 SOG in the final 2 periods. In the meantime, the Moose rattle off 26 shots, with 4 finding their way into the netting. Bothwell, Quinn, and MacLean twice. The lead building as the clock winds down. Beer sales are good. Home team wins 5-1

1st star – Quinn 2G 3pts
2nd – MacLean 2G
3rd – Bothwell 1G (no love for Melanson saving 19 of 20 shots)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Very surprising start for this team which lost significant parts of the lineup from last season, but manages to keep on scoring goals. Melanson with an impressive 2.68 GA keeps the team in the games he plays.

The upcoming road trip will tell us a lot about the rest of the season.
