WEEKLY SUMMARY: Syracuse splits
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Not an easy week at home or on the road. This week we host Ohio (tied for 2nd best in the league, 1 point behind St. Clair Shores) and Mackinac Island, 1 point behind Ohio – yikes!
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CAPJACK RANGERS League Management Bowl (continued).
MIM and CAP went after each other in the first but Beaupre (MIM) and Weeks (CAP) stood their ground stopping at 23 shots on goal (12 for CAP). The period featured 12 minutes of penalties with each team only getting 43 seconds of PP. Second-period action again sees a game with DeBlois getting an early goal (1:08 in). But a CAP penalty rewards the Moose with a tying PP goal from Quinn 3 1/2 minutes in. Then as the period draws to a close, a MIM penalty allows a Robinson PP goal with 21 seconds left and a 2-1 Ranger lead after 2. This time, the Rangers close down on their opponents and with 3 minutes to go, DeBlois scores his 2nd to give the Rangers some insurance, and the 3-1 lead holds up and CapJack wins it.
STARS (all CAP)
1. DeBlois – 2 goals (twice this week with 2 goal games)
2. Trottier – 3 assists
3. Weeks – 28 saves
Beaupre makes 30 saves, while Trottier won an amazing 26 faceoffs out of 35 (74%!)
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Rangers are finding some defense as the season moves along – made some changes. The offense continues to be steady and 1-1 at home this week is not so bad considering the competition. DeBlois with 2 2-goal games was fun as well!
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY SUMMARY: It’s been a bad run for Brooklyn.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game for the Ducks this week. The defending Cup Champions are struggling so far this season as their offense is among the worst in the league. As a result, Coach Raylesberg is shaking things up a bit this week, recalling RW Tony Currie from the minors. Currie, who played for the Ducks through 1982 before being released, was re-signed in this year’s draft. He will team up with Bobby Clarke and Mark Osborne in an effort to boost the scoring from the #2 line
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 6 BRO 5

A wild game as the Ducks blew lead after lead, fell behind, and then tied it with less than 2 minutes left and the goalie pulled – and then won it with 29 seconds to go on a goal by Rick Middleton! Tony Currie showed why he was activated when he opened the scoring at 10:06 of the first, assisted by Bobby Clarke to make it 1-0 Ducks. After BRO tied it on a PP goal by McCarthy, the Ducks took the lead 2-1 on a breakaway unassisted goal by Ryan Walter. Brooklyn tied it once again, in the second, before Middleton put NCD up 3-2 with 1:06 left in the second. In the third, defenseman Chorney scored his first of the year to once again tie it, at 3-3. BRO then took the lead at 4:16 when Anton Stastny got #10, making it 4-3. The Ducks came back to tie it less than 2 minutes later on a goal by Tiger Williams (7). Then at 11:15 ex-Duck Bobby Bourne beat Don Edwards and the Rats were back on top 5-4! And that’s how it stayed until the final two minutes when Edwards was pulled from the net and Lanny McDonald scored (7) to tie the game. Middleton then got his second of the game and 16th of the year to win it!

THREE STARS:
1- NCD- Middleton 2G 1 A 3 PTS
2- NCD- Walter 1G 1 A 2 PTS
3- BRO- Sundstrom 1G 1 A 2 PTS

Brian Hayward made 37 saves for BRO as the Ducks had a 43-29 SOG advantage including 17-6 in the wild third period.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: After 25 games, the Ducks are 13-10-2-28pts, third in the Norris as Syracuse and Dallas are both off to great starts. In the Adams Division, Ohio, SCS and MIM are also off to great starts so right now the Ducks are 6th in the Campbell Conference, and trailing for a playoff spot. With 6 goals against the Harbor Rats, perhaps the slumbering Ducks offense will finally come to life as they try to get back in the thick of the playoff race
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Four games at the Cow Patty this week as Texas looks to make a move in the standings.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS First up is New Castle. In a tightly played game, New Castle gets one in the first from Macoun and one in the second from Verbeek for a 2-0 lead after 2. Things remain like that until Lambert gets an ENG at 18:11 to seal the 3-0 win for New Castle.

Stars
1. Barrasso 26 Saves
2. Verbeek 1G 1 A
3. Macoun 1G

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Up next is Chicago. Hughes scores 2 for Texas in the first and is answered by Bossy for a 2-1 Texas lead after 1. Hakansson ties it in the second and after a scoreless 3rd, we head to OT. Andreychuk nets the game-winner for Texas with 53 seconds left in the extra period.

3 Stars
1. Hughes 2G
2. Andreychuk 1G
3. Poddubny 2A

GAME #3: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS After an off day, Texas welcomes Pittsburgh. Paiement starts the scoring for Pitt but is answered by McCourt, Cyr, and Hunter for a 3-1 Texas lead. Haworth ends the first with a goal and Laughlin ties it early in the second. Texas goes back up by 2 on goals by McCourt and Taylor. Pitt won’t go away as Paiement gets his second to cut it to 1. But alas for Pitt, Hughes scores and McCourt gets the hatty on an ENG to seal the 7-4 win.

3 Stars
1. McCourt 3G
2. Paiement 2G, 1A
3. Haworth 1G, 2A

GAME #4: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Finally, New Castle comes a-callin’. Texas gets off to a great start on goals by Hughes and Taylor. Hickey and Savard answer for New Castle but McClelland gives Texas a 3-2 lead after 1. In the second, McDonald scores 2 and Potvin scores one for New Castle, offset by a Texas goal from Nilsson for a 5-4 New Castle lead after 2. McDonald completes the hatty on an ENG for a 6-4 New Castle win.

3 Stars
1. McDonald 3G
2. Middleton 3A
3. Pederson 3A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well, 2-2 at home could have been better, could have been worse. Goaltending continues to be an issue. Or is it defense? Both?
Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With head coach Stray Corrado on the lam, his assistant coach Otto Pilot takes over the team until Stray finds his way home. The Chiefs, Sasquatches, and Dynamo come to town this week. 3 home games, and chances to move up in the division.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago 2, Charlestown 1 – Froese and his friends with an impressive 1 goal allowed in a tight defensive battle.

1st star – Froese 33 saves
2nd – Anderson 1G
3rd – Roulston 1G

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago 6, Portland 3 – Stastny and Bossy with 2 goals each lead the 3rd-period domination to run away with this game.

1st star – Stastny 2G 4pts
2nd – Bossy 2G 3pts
3rd – Savard 4A

GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Charlotte 5, Chicago 5 – A strong 3rd-period comeback helps the Underground stay undefeated in the homestand.

1st star – Boschman – hat trick
2nd – Savard 1G 2pts
3rd – Kelly 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Otto does a great job managing the team and guiding them to 5 points this week. More weeks like this will have the fans saying, “Stray who?”
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: (7-11-2) Brooklyn and (12-10-2) New Castle visit northern Michigan for some hockey action. The Moose try to stay in contention with St. Clair Shores and Ohio in the Adams Division.
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 5, Harbor Rats 2 – Brooklyn gives notice real early they will not roll over, as Johnson scores 20 seconds into the game on some nifty passing that had the Moose looking very lost. As the Moose try to get things organized, they open the door for the Rats with a hooking penalty. Moose looks pretty good on the PK, until Johnson again finds an opening and makes the Moose pay, making it 2-0 only 7 minutes into the game. This apparently wakes up Jari Kurri, who retaliates a minute later and cuts the lead to 1. Teams then seem to figure each other out. The Rats kill off 2 minors, and the Moose kill off one. An O’Connell take-down gives Stastny a penalty shot, which is saved by Staniowski. Off to intermission 2-1 Brooklyn.

2nd period – Moose kill off a minor. Then MacLean and Hospodar have a real doozy of a fight. Brookly then gets a bit sloppy and commits 3 minors in the last half of the period. In between PK events, the Moose get an ES score from Cote to tie it at 2 as we head off to break.

3rd period – Before the Rats can kill off a carry-over penalty from the 2nd, Quinn finds an opening to make it 3-2 Moose. Brooklyn kills off one more minor before a fight between Campbell and Hospodar makes it 4 on 4. The Moose take advantage of the open ice to get a goal from Terrion, and now we have it 4-2 Moose. 3 minutes later it’s Rogers with a goal for the Moose, and the Moose now has 5 unanswered goals. A whole bunch of nothing the rest of the way, and the Moose cruise home with a 5-2 win.

1st star – Rogers 1G 3pts
2nd – Johnson 2G
3rd – Terrion 1G 2pts

GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 5, Ducks 4 – OT – Aggressive play early in this game. Maruk and Boutette in a minor skirmish, followed by a prolonged battle between Price and McDonald. Then Beers finds the netting and a little reminder we have a hockey game. But just a minute later it’s Williams and Beers each earning 5 minutes off. Late in the period, the Ducks get on the board twice, with goals by Osborne and Middleton. 2-1 at the break.

2nd period – The fighting dies down and hockey takes hold. the Ducks open the door for the Moose with a McCrimmon penalty and they walk on in, Quinn with the tying goal. Ducks kill 2 others, Moose kill one, and we go to break tied 2-2.

3rd period – Tight play continues and the Ducks break the tie on a goal from Williams at the 5-minute mark. The Ducks continue to frustrate the Moose and it pays off late in the period with a mistake by the Moose, and the Ducks take a big 2 goal lead, Osborne scores, with 3 minutes to go. Moose goes for broke, pulling the goalie, and it pays off on the zone entry with Beers going top shelf. and the lead is cut to 1 at 4-3. 50 seconds to go. Moose wins the faceoff, but the first shot is saved, Ducks are in control but Giles knocks him off the puck, then some patient passing by the Moose gets the puck to Kurri and he drills one in with only 12 seconds left. Overtime

Both teams get chances to score in OT. After a few exchanges, it’s a MacLean deflection off a Kurri shot that brings it all to an end, 5-4 Moose.

1st star – Beers 2G
2nd – Osborne 2G
3rd – Quinn 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A couple of good come-from-behind wins help build the confidence of the Moose, which should help them down the stretch. 10 goals from 7 players, none of them named Propp or Lysiak, bodes well for the ability to score on all lines.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: At last report, Charlotte had already become early-season sellers, dispatching of Bill Hajt and Gilbert Perreault for a pair of second-round picks in the upcoming draft to buy some hope for the future, along with needed salary cap relief. In the more immediate future, a second-place finish with a losing record may be the reality for the Dynamo but the playoffs were looking more and more like a lost pipedream when the trade selloff trigger was activated. In its lone home game this week, the Dynamo hosted Syracuse and the recently-departed Hajt.
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The game typified the Dynamo’s season chock-full of close defeats: for all intents and purposes, it was yet another loss by a singular goal as a rally effort fell short and the Bulldogs poked in a late empty-net goal to take a 4-2 victory.

An early Bulldogs attack doomed the Dynamo: Syracuse grabbed a 3-0 lead by the 8:37 mark of the second period, courtesy of goals from Cam Neely, Guy LaFleur, and Pierre Larouche. Syracuse attempted just 14 shots in the first two periods but converted three of them against hapless Charlotte goalie Allan Bester.

Meanwhile, the Dynamo blasted away with 40 shots at a sensational Matt Millen (Syracuse, by contrast, finished with just 19 SOG) — and only found the net twice. A late second-period goal on the power play by Charlotte’s Dave Poulin, followed by a shorthanded goal from Glenn Anderson early in the third (both were unassisted), had narrowed the deficit to 3-2 but John Tonelli salted the game away with a Syracuse empty netter with 47 ticks left.

Charlotte dominated in the faceoff circle winning 49 of 40 faceoffs (59 percent), to no avail. Millen in the nets for the Bulldogs deservedly grabbed first-star honors.

Three stars (all Syracuse):
1. Millen, 38 saves
2. Lafleur 1 G, 3 Pts
3. Neely 1 G, 2 Pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Despite stats that suggest Charlotte thoroughly outplayed its division-leading opponent (a common refrain), the Dynamo’s losing ways continued in its lone home game this week.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: SCS hosts Portland and Andes
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Lawton, Gagne, and Hunter score in the 1st period for Portland. McCarthy scores his 23rd in the 2nd to narrow the lead. But, both teams exchange goals, and the Sasquatch win.

Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome Pittsburgh and Charlotte to town for games this week.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. OHIO LEGENDS PIT 2, OHIO 2

Thomas Steen’s sixth goal of the season, with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, lifted Pittsburgh to a 2-2 tie with Ohio. The Spirit held the upper hand in shots on goal at 36-27. Rick Wamsley has his first start without a loss this season, stopping 25 shots and improving to 0-8-1, while Mike Liut turned aside 34 shots and had his record slip to 8-3-1.

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 4, CHD 2

Hakan Loob’s second game of the year saw him net his first goal, the game-winner at 9:57 of the third period. The Dynamo outshot the Legends, 35-25, as Mike Liut grabbed the win with 33 stops, while Alan Bester re-directed 21 shots in taking the loss.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A split was not the result the home fans in Ohio were looking for, as the Legends are trying to keep up the pace in the Adams Division.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Week 7 sees Cap Jack and Michigan to town. Andes has struggled on home ice and is hoping to send the home fans home happy.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Patrick leading Rangers are first up here this week. A rare game for the Mountaineers as they lead from 8:27 on till the final whistle at the end of the 3rd. The Mountaineers were helped by having a 4 – 16 advantage in PIM. While we went 0 – 7 on the power play we were able to hold onto the puck for periods of time.

1st Star – Trottier
2nd Star – Pouzar
3rd Star – Sutter

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The final home game of the week is against fellow expansion team Michigan. Andes starts fast scoring 52 seconds into the first period. Andes continues to outshoot the Stags but the Stags start to outscore the home side. The second period is all Michigan as they put 3 goals past Jensen. The stags leave Andes with a well-deserved 4 – 1 win.

1st Star – Bullard
2nd Star – Turgeon
3rd Star – Fuhr

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes continues to have me scratching my head. We win a game against the team I expected to lose to and lose the game I thought I had a chance of winning. Still, 2 points instead of 0 points is a good thing.
