WEEKLY SUMMARY: Syracuse enjoyed their brief time in first place losing both home games
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers get 3 home games this week and hope to make the best of it – Charlestown, Michigan, and Charlotte skating in…
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The Chiefs are looking to turn things around after a sluggish start. They start out well, getting the lead and regaining it twice before giving up 3 unanswered goals and falling 5-3.
CAP 5 CHA 3
Kisio (eventual Star 1 in the game) scores quickly a minute into the game for a 1-0 CHA lead. But Wickenheiser ties it up halfway through the 1st, but Preston scores a SH goal for the Chiefs and they head to the locker room up 2-1. Silk gets a PP goal near the middle of the 2nd period to tie it up, but Kisio gets his 2nd 3 minutes later and Charlestown grabs a 3-2 lead. But with 16 seconds left in the 2nd, Trottier scores to tie it up, and from then on it was the Rangers game. The teams traded 10 SOG in the 3rd, but it was Robinson and Kromm getting Rangers goals in the 1st 10 minutes and CapJack’s defense holds on shutting down the Chiefs in the 3rd for the 5-3 win.STARS
1. CHA – Kisio 2 goals, 1 assist
2. CAP – Silk 1 goal, 1 assist
3. CAP – Trottier 1 goal, 1 assist (and 17 faceoffs won).
GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Michigan is having a rough start to the season but they skate into Madison Oval Garden with other things on their mind and find themselves in an OT game – but alas, Trottier and the Rangers take it in OT.
CapJack 7 Michigan 6Turgeon gets the scoring started 6 minutes into the game when the Stags take advantage of a Rangers penalty and get the PP goal. But the Rangers’ Neufeld puts 2 in the Stags goal and CapJack skates off with a 2-1 lead after 1. Then Bullard liked what Neufeld did and he scores 2 straight goals in the 2nd and flips the lead back to Michigan 3-2. But then Crowder and DeBlois score a couple of minutes apart shortly thereafter and the Rangers regain the lead 4-3. But Arniel goes off for boarding late in the 2nd and Bullard and the Stags take advantage with a PP goal and the 2nd ends 4-4! That’s a hat trick for Bullard.3rd period starts with a flurry and Crowder scores 41 seconds in to give the Rangers the 5-4 lead. Less than 5 minutes later Messier scores for Michigan to tie it up. Then Neufeld gets the hat trick midway into the period and the Rangers are back on top 6-5. But the Stags don’t quit and Patterson scores with 7 minutes to go. So it’s 6-6 but suddenly the teams go 7 minutes with no goals and regulation ends 6-6!So, off to OT and the Rangers pull it out when the Rangers take full control. Crowder gets the SC, but Fuhr makes the save then when the Stags were trying to clear Crowder takes it away and steers it in deep, Trottier recovers the puck, shoots, and beats Fuhr glove side for the game-winner, 7-6 CAP!
Stats are pretty much even for the game (as the score for most of the time).
STARS
1. CAP – Neufeld 3 goals 1 assist
2. MIC – Bullard 3 goals 1 assist
3. CAP – Crowder 2 goals, 1 assist
GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Hosting a division foe – seeking more separation, the Rangers break down during the stretch – OR the DYNAMO came to full life, and Charlotte pulls it out 5-4 with 2 late, late goals. That’s something the Rangers have been working to stop, and lately, they have, but not today.
Charlotte 5 CapJack 4Teams skate to a 1-1 tie after 1. Boschman (CHD) gets the opening goal and Cameron (CAP) ties it up just past midway. Then the game goes 26+ minutes with no other scoring until Anderson draws a 2-minute penalty for Charlotte and Silk and the Rangers take advantage for the goal ahead PP goal with less than 2 minutes to play in the 2nd. However, the Rangers couldn’t take the 2-1 lead into the locker room as Bruce Crowder flies a slap shot high over the stick of Resch for the tying goal as the 2nd ends. Then the Rangers take the lead 41 seconds into the 3rd when Wickenheiser scores. But 3 minutes later Charlie Simmer (one of my all-time favorites) beats Resch with the tying goal. So the two teams go after each other trying to get that next goal and Charlotte looks set to get it when the Rangers Keith Crowder goes off for 2 minutes. However, it’s the Rangers Moe Mantha who scores (SH) and the Rangers get the 4-3 lead! Now just hold them off. Didn’t happen – Boschman reties the game with 4 1./2 to go and Howerchuk gets the Dynamo the 5-4 lead with a minute and a half to go. And then Moog the Dynamo hold off the last Rangers charge and win it, 5-4. And except for blocked shots, the Ranger took every stat EXCEPT the one that counts, the score.STARS – ALL CHD
1. Boschman 2 goals
2. Simmer 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Hawerchuck 1 goal, 1 assist
Moog stopped 30 shots.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 games, 4 points, could have been worse, so we’re OK with it – although it would have been nicer to beat the Dynamo!
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The defending Stanley Cup Champion Ducks have been struggling, especially offensively and on special teams (PP and PK). Two home games this week – and a chance to gain some ground in the playoff race- as they play last place Andes and Smythe Division leader Portland
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS AND 4 NCD 1

Andes maybe last in their division but they seem to have the Ducks number this year, as they beat New Castle for the second time this season. The story of this game was Al Jensen who was nothing short of sensational in goal for Andes. In the first period, the Ducks were FLYING and QUACKING as they outshot Andes 24-5! Jensen turned away shot after shot and it was not until 18:50 of the period that the Ducks finally scored, when Tony Currie put it past Jensen. The game turned around at the start of the second period when Ducks defenseman Harold Snepts drew a 5-minute major for cross-checking. Andes took advantage with TEN shots on goal and TWO goals as Doug Gilmour and Michel Goulet put the puck past Don Edwards, to give Andes a 2-1 lead. Later in the period, Rick Fox scored to make it 3-1 and Robert Picard’s third-period goal completed the scoring.

THREE STARS:
1- AND – Jensen 42 saves
2-AND- Fox 1G 1 A 2 PTS
3- AND Goulet 1 G

Brent Sutter had 2 assists for Andes

Jensen is now 8-6-1 for Andes, a very impressive record given the Mountaineers overall record. Conversely, Don Edwards is now 6-9 as the Ducks continue to struggle when he is goal, rather than Billy Smith

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS The Sasquatch visits the Duck Pond with a nearly identical record to the Ducks. New Castle strikes first at 3:25 when Bobby Clarke scored. But Clarke, who missed most of the Andes game with an injury, left this one as well – this time with an injury to his finger. He would not return and it was all downhill for the Ducks. Portland scored three in the first period (McBain, Perrault and Fogolin) to take a 3-1 lead. Mike Foligno made it 4-1 in the second before Pat Boutette made it 4-2 midway through the second period. The Ducks pressed in the third, in an effort to tie it, but the Sasquatch forechecking held them to only 5 SOG as The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, added an empty netter as time ran out. Final Score POR 5 NCD 2

THREE STARS:
1- POR Foligno 1 G 1 A
2- POR Gretzky 1G won 10 of 16 faceoffs
3- Fogolin 1G

Reggie Lemelin was outstanding in goal for POR making 30 saves. He’s 10-5-1 on the year. Ducks netminder Don Edwards drops to6-10.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: It is a very disappointing homestand for the Ducks as they drop both games. New Castle is looking more and more like a team that is going to miss the playoffs
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Big week on the Island with 3 big opponents coming to town. None other than The Great One arrives with the 1st place Portland Sasquatch. Then 2nd place Texas shows up with Dave Andrechuk and John Tucker leading the scoring attack. Finally division rival Ohio, and their HOF lineup including Stevie Y, Ray Bourque, and that Tony Tanti guy is pretty good too. No pushovers here.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Portland Sasquatch
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE 1st period – Slow start. Portland kills off an early minor. Kurri with a goal at the midway point. Hamel evens it up at 1 at 15:41. Wells and Ruskowski in a minor skirmish just before intermission. 1-1 after 1.

2nd period = Thanks to back-to-back penalties by O’Connell, the Hairy Beasts get 2 powerplay goals before halftime, and Foligno and Siltanen get the easy goals. Carbonneau and Giles have a little fight. Quinn uses the open ice of 4 on 4 to cut the lead to 1. Carbonneau 2 minutes later with a goal of his own to push the lead back up to 2. Late in the period, Maruk adds one more to make it 4-3, Sasquatch, at the break.

3rd period – Kurri with his 2nd goal, early, less than 2 minutes in, and the Moose have tied the game at 4. Both teams killed off one minor on the way to the 4-minute mark. Then Kurri finishes the hat trick to complete the comeback and take the lead at 5-4. Portland takes no time answering that goal with Ciccarelli knocking one in. 5-5 with under 3 to go. Both teams with shots to win, and then it was Kurri, with only 15 seconds to go, with the game-winner, and a bonus to his hat-trick. Turns out the best answer when playing Gretzky, is a former teammate.

Final – Moose 6, Sasquatch 5.

1st star – Kurri 4G, 5pts
2nd – Ciccarelli 1G 3pts
3rd – Siltanen 1G 3pts

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE 1st period – Andreychuk and O’Connell with a little fight only 4 minutes in. Sutter with a goal shortly after we return to full strength. Then a Quinn penalty puts the Brahmas on the PP and they are very happy to make it count with a goal from Andreychuk. 2-0 just before the halfway point. Texas kills off one minor late, and then Taylor and Terrion with a minor scuffle. 2-0 Texas at the first break.

2nd period – Moose still looking sluggish as Poddubny scores early, and the visitors are up 3-0. Beers get the Moose on the board a few minutes later, 3-1. Texas and the Moose each kill off a minor as the 2nd-period winds down. A little fight between Korn and Files. Finally Rogers with a goal to make it 3-2 Texas at the 2nd break.

3rd period – A double minor by Taylor gives the Moose 4 minutes of PP, and it takes nearly all of that before they can get some offense organized. Finally, Propp got his PP goal, tying the game at 3. And just for good measure, Propp adds another just 2 minutes later, and the Moose have taken the lead 4-3 with 11 minutes to go. Taylor atones for his penalty just a minute later, and we are tied at 4 with just over 10 minutes to go. The Moose kill off one minor on the way to the final horn. Neither team can get a score, so we go to Overtime.

Overtime – Moose control play with a 4-1 SOG advantage, but the goalies stand tall, and each team takes home 1 point.

FINAL – Texas 4, Mackinac Island 4 OT

1st star – Propp 2G 3pts
2nd – Poddubny 1G 2pts
3rd – Andrechuk 1G 2pts

Bannerman 35 saves

GAME #3: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE 1st period – Kurri on the board early with a goal to make it 1-0, quickly followed by Beers, and the Moose are up 2. Moose kill off a minor, and then a pretty good fight between Carlyle and Price. Ohio kills off a minor at the midway point. Finally a name I feel we will hear a lot in the future, Steve Yzerman scores for the Legends, and it’s 2-1. Gradin and MacLean with minors staggered 14 seconds apart gives us some 4 on 4 play. Moose like it apparently, and score 2 goals in the final 2 minutes of the period, Beers and Propp, to make it 4-1 Moose at the first break.

2nd period – Ohio kills off an early minor. Tanti cuts the lead to 2 midway through the period. Quinn answers for the Moose 5 minutes later to make it 5-2. Yzerman and Ruskowski in a little skirmish. Then back-to-back minors by Currie and Sutter set up the Moose with a 5 on 3, and the Moose get a goal from MacLean making it 6-2 at 2nd intermission.

3rd period – MacLean adds one more early to make it 7-2. A Terrion minor penalty sets up a PP goal just 21 seconds later by Gradin. Finally, 10 minutes of not much, ending with a minor fight between Beers and Carlyle. Quinn with a goal, 5 minutes left in the game to make the final 8-3

FINAL Moose 8, Legends 3

1st star – Quinn 2G 3pts
2nd – Propp 1G 4pts
3rd – Beers 2G 3pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: With 18 goals in 3 games, and 5 out of 6 possible points, a real good week against strong opposition, especially with 1st line Center, Tom Lysiak out for 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: As Charlotte forges ahead under a retooling plan, it entered this week tied for second place in the Patrick ( despite a woeful 6-14 record) and hosted Mackinac Island and Saint Clair Shores, which were tied atop the Adams division.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte’s Dave Hunter broke a 2-2 tie with a shorthanded goal 8:46 into the third period and the Dynamo added two empty netters during a frenzied 2-2 goals standoff that occurred in the final minute of the period, to hold on to a 5-4 win.

With an empty Moose net, Charlotte exchanged goals with two by Mackinac Island’s Brian Propp in that last minute of the game, in a wild finish. A Dale Hawerchuk goal gave Charlotte the lead 4-2 exactly at the 19:00 mark of the third. Propp scored 17 seconds later, but that was followed by a Glenn Anderson firing into the open net just four seconds later off the faceoff win. Propp then closed the scoring on an assist by Eddy Beers and Mike Eaves with 17 ticks left in the third.

Charlie Simmer scored a goal in the first and second periods to propel the Dynamo to an early 2-1 lead and captured first star honors.

Three stars:
1. Simmer, 2 G, 4 Points
2. Hawerchuk 1 G, 4 points
3. Propp 2 G in the final minute of play

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo rallied and pulled off another upset of another Adams co-leader — this time it was St. Clair Shores Saints — on a Glenn Anderson overtime goal that lifted Charlotte to a 4-3 victory.

Charlotte trailed 3-0 in the first period after yielding even strength and special teams goals of different varieties by Pat Verbeek (even strength), Ron Francis (shorthanded), and defenseman Doug Wilson (power play).

The Dynamo, sparked by two goals from third-line right winger Bob Crawford, ultimately tied the game at 3-3 and forced five minutes of extra time. With an official tie game just a scant 38 seconds away, Glenn Anderson beat otherwise steady Saints netminder Tom Barrasso (31 saves), on an assist from Randy Moller and Charlie Simmer.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1 Crawford (2 G)
2. Simmer (1 G, 2 points)
3. Anderson (1 G)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte showed signs of righting the ship by getting four points out of four at home and also defeating first-place division rival Cap Jack on the road this week. This is clearly the team’s best stretch of the season and it comes after the recent fire sale involving trading away Gilbert Perreault and Bill Hajt. Despite those departures, this revamped lineup (without some prior redundancies) seems to be gelling. Could the comeback be starting now?

Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With a home record of 2-7-3, the expansion Stags continue to try and turn things around. Home tilts with lesser lights Pittsburgh and Charlotte and high-flying St. Clair Shores provide the opposition. Lupul, Foster, and Delorme remain on the IR for Michigan. Rookie Ken Daneyko will be inserted into the Stags’ lineup in his MWOTHL debut.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags’ blueline corps played a key role in the team’s 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. Rick Wamsley made 31 stops in a losing effort for the Spirit.
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MICHIGAN STAGS A pair of goals apiece by Mike Bullard and John Ogrodnick highlighted Michigan’s 7-4 victory over the Dynamo. Over-achiever Steve Tambellini recorded his 10th of the campaign for the Stags. Tom Fergus notched a pair for the visitors. GAME #3: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Last-place Michigan recorded its 3rd consecutive home win, defeating first-place St. Clair Shores 2-1. The Saints led 1-0 (Lambert) after 1. Butch Goring evened the score near the halfway mark of the 2nd period and then a little less than 2 minutes later, John Ogrodnick’s PPG gave the Stags the lead that would end up as the final score. Ron Low was solid between the pipes for Michigan with 31 saves, several of the spectacular variety. 3 stars: (1) (MIC) Ron Low; (2) (MIC) John Ogrodnick [1G]; (3) (MIC) Butch Goring ]1G]
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 home-ice wins have the team in good spirits but whether this is an anomaly or a true sign that team is finally on the right track remains to be seen.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints lose two games on the road. They take on Dallas and CapJack.
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS McCarthy with a hat trick for the Saints – just in the first period. Ludvig scores for the Drakes and its 3-1 after 1 period. In the 2nd period, McCarthy scores his 4th goal of the game. Bridgman scores for the Saints and MacLeish scores for the Drakes late.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints take both home games against Dallas and CapJack.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The only home game this week and it will be against fellow upstate NY team Norris and league-leading Syracuse. I guess we can call it a potential rivalry in the making.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Syracuse Bulldogs
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Syracuse jumps out quickly on Andes with 2 first-period goals. The game would stay that way until the first few minutes of the 3rd when the Bull Dogs put a 3rd on the board. Andes makes a spirited comeback and put 3 on the board during the period but it was Cam Neely scoring his 15th that put the visitors up 4 – 2 that would seal the Mountaineer’s fate. Overall a fun game
1st Star – Fox
2nd Star – Bellows
3rd Star – Marsh
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes loses its one lone home game this week to league-leading Syracuse
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Spirit welcome Chicago to town.

Then Chicago has a comeback for the ages, winning the final period 4-0 with goals from Stastny, Bossy, Vaive, and Savard. The Capone Center has not been this loud and crazy in ages.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago has New Castle in their sites as they look to move out of the Norris Division basement.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two of the top teams in the league visit Fort Worth this week as Syracuse and Dallas come to town.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Syracuse Bulldogs
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS The Norris leading Bulldogs from Syracuse are first up. Texas starts this one on fire, with Korn getting things going just 1:10 into the game. Nilsson adds a PP goal and Andreychuk pots another for a 3-0 Texas lead after 1. The second period is uneventful until the 19:41 mark when Larouche gets Syracuse on the board. A minor blip or a sign of things to come. Well, Mullen scores at 4:26 and Tonelli gets the equalizer at 14:44 and we are tied up after 3. Syracuse completes the comeback, with Lorimer getting his first of the year at 3:14 of OT. 16 penalties in the game but only one PP goal.

3 Stars
1. Mullen (SYR) 1G, 1A
2. Larouche (Syr) 1G 1A
3. Lorimer (Syr) 1G, 1A

GAME #2 – VISITING TEAM: Dallas Drakes
GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Next up, Dallas takes the short trip west on I-30. Once again Texas starts out hot, with Lindstrom and Poddubny scoring in the first for a 2-0 Texas lead. The second period is scoreless. Will this be a repeat of the 3rd-period disaster from the last game? Yes, yes it will. Dionne scores 2 PP goals to send the game to OT tied at 2. Texas does manage to hold on for a tie this time and salvages a point.

3 Stars
1. Dionne (Dal) 2G
2. Lindstrom (Tex) 1G
3. Poddubny (Tex) 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Playing two top teams was going to be tough, but blowing big leads in both hurts. Salvaging a point is better than nothing, but this is a disappointment.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas gets the Chiefs
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Ron Flockhart opens the scoring in the first period but Paul Coffey answers back less than two minutes later. Bernie Nicholls gives the Chiefs the lead early in the second but Joe Mullen ties the game up for the Drakes. Bobby Gould puts the Drakes up 3-2 going into the second intermission. With Chiefs on the power play Ric Nattress turns the puck over at the blue line, and Illka Sinisalo puts the Drakes to stay. Final 6-2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes win
