Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago gets 1 home game at the Capone Center this week as they take on heated rivals and the division-leading Syracuse Bulldogs.
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Chicago gets out quickly to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs get on the board. Chicago then nets 5 un-answered goals and doubles up the Bulldogs by the end of the game.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Syracuse 4

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – Peter Stastny 3G
Star 2: CHI – Rick Vaive 2G, 3Pts
Star 3: SYR – Pierre Larouche 1G, 2Pts

Game Winner: – Peter Stastny

Notables:
SYR – None
CHI – Bob Murray 3A, Peter Stastny Hattrick

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago makes quick work of the top dawg in the Norris Division. They can only hope the road is equally as nice.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A pair of home games against Divisional rivals
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT In a year where the Patrick Division is pretty weak, Capjack has been the king of the division. Are they good? Or just better than the rest of us? 😉

Larmer comes out firing to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead!

Korab (4) ties it 1-1.

Steen (8) makes it 2-1.

Crowder (18) ties it 2-2.

Then the 2nd Period happens…

Capjack scores 4 straight en route to a 7-6 win.

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT The Spirit manages to win a rare game against Charlotte, 6-5!

Wow… so this is what winning feels like? We forgot…

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 points out of 4… some would call it average, but after the season we’ve had I’d call it a miracle.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The high-scoring low defense Rangers host two teams this week – Brooklyn and Andes.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS

VS.

CAPJACK RANGERS

Brooklyn skates off with a 2-1 lead after 1 due to a SH goal from Housley and a PP goal from Housley. He does not later get an even-strength goal but that would have been an interesting hat trick. Robinson netted an even-strength goal sandwiched in between the Housely scores.

In the 2nd, the Rangers come back and score twice to take the lead – Trottier and Arniel are the goal scorers. Trottier again is having a great year!

Then a minute 20 into the 3rd with the Rangers down a skater – former Ranger Valentine scores a PP goal for Brooklyn to tie the game! But Trottier comes back and gets his 2nd of the game with 8 minutes to go and the Rangers push ahead 4-3. Then they hold off the Rats attack for those final 8 minutes to win it.
STARS
1. CAP – Trottier 2 goals, 1 assist
2. BRO – Housley 2 goals
3. CAP – Arniel 1 goal

GAME #2 – VISITING TEAM: Andes Mountaineers
GAME #2: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS

VS.

CAPJACK RANGERS

Well, this game was a surprise as it belonged to the goalie – BOTH of them. Jensen faced 38 shots and stopped 36 of them (94.7%) and Resch faced 32 shots and stopped 31 of them (96.9%) as the Rangers eked out a 2-1 win.

But the game also featured 28 minutes in penalties and 2 PP for Andes and 4 for CapJack – all went for naught – except for the Rangers scoring 1 first goal of the game on a delayed penalty in the 3rd. There were a lot of coincidental roughing penalties in this game – you’d think they didn’t like each other.

1st period, 19 shots on the two goalies – NADA.
2nd period, 24 shots on the two goalies – ZIP,
3rd period, the Rangers fired 18 shots on Jensen and at 11:04 Silk finally puts one past him (delayed call). Then 30 seconds later, Silk scores AGAIN for a 2-0 lead. Last-minute, the Mountaineers are trying everything with all their skaters on the ice and Goulet fires one past Resch to pull within 1, but the Rangers hold on for the final 13 seconds to win it, 2-1.
STARS:
1. CAP – Silk 2 goals
2. CAP – Resch 31 saves
3. AND – Goulet 1 goal
And Jensen’s 36 saves make the notable column.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well, the Rangers pull off 2 low-scoring (for them) games at home and a road win at Pittsburgh for a good week. But they are at a crossroads – they are probably Patrick division leaders but can they hold their own in the playoffs. Should they BUY or should they sell off some big names to start a rebuild? Decisions, decisions.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The defending Stanley Cup Champion Ducks are struggling and in danger of dropping out of the playoff race. The puzzling aspect of the season is the lack of offense especially with the return of last year’s top scorers – Barry Pederson and Rick Middleton who are now complemented with off-season acquisition Lanny McDonald. The Ducks shake up the lineup a bit and change some strategies for this week – as they play each of their three division rivals in games that may make or break the season for New Castle
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS These two teams battled it out in last year’s playoffs. This season the Ducks have won the first two meetings between the teams. And New Castle starts strong when Lanny McDonald (from Pederson and Potvin) makes it 1-0 early in the first. After Dallas tied it, Rick Middleton got #20 to make it 2-1 at intermission. In the second, the Ducks top line took over as Middleton scored again followed by Pederson and then by last year’s third member of the top line, Ryan Walter – as New Castle took a 5-2 lead after two periods. The two teams exchanged goals in the third and the Ducks came away with a very big 6-3 win over their division rival.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Middleton 2G, 2 A, 4 PTS
2- NCD McDonald 2G, 1 A, 3 PTS
3- NCD Pederson 1G, 2A, 3 PTS

Dennis Potvin had 3 assists. Pederson won 17 of 23 faceoffs as the Ducks took 65.6% of the faceoffs. New Castle outshot Dallas 34-25 as Billy Smith went to 10-5-2 on the season.

GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS The Bulldogs have been leading the Division most of the season and so another big game for the Ducks. Coming off a 6 goal performance against Dallas, The Duck Pond is as noisy as ever but its Syracuse that quiets the crowd with a goal at the 35-second mark by Brian Bellows. Ivan Boldirev lit the lamp later in the period and Syracuse took a 2-0 lead to the locker room after one. Then the Ducks EXPLODED. EIGHT unanswered goals as suddenly the boys from New Castle have relocated their scoring touch. FIVE goals in the second period put NCD ahead for good. Lanny McDonald had his best game as a Duck as he got the Hat Trick and FIVE points. 8-2 the final as the Ducks rack up their highest scoring total of the season.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD McDonald 3G 2A 5 PTS
2- NCD Potvin 1G 2A 3 PTS
3- NCD Middleton 1G 1A 2 PTS

Barry Pederson had 3 assists. The Ducks won nearly 60% of the faceoffs and outshot SYR 35-29. Smith made 27 saves to win his 11th and second in a row. Greg Millen gave up all 8 goals for the Bulldogs

GAME #3: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Can the Ducks make it three in a row at home? Is the offense really back? With the usually shaky Don Edwards starting in goal, the Ducks came out flying in the first period. Andre Savard, Rick Middleton TWICE, and Mark Osborne all scored as NCD took a 4-0 lead over Chicago. They outshot the Underground 11-4 in the period. The teams exchanged goals in the second period to make it 5-1 NCD after two. In the third, Hakansson scored for CHI to make it 5-2 but NCD countered with goals by McDonald and Ramsay as New Castle skated off with a convincing 7-2 win.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Middleton 2G 1A 3 PTS
2- NCD Pederson 1G 3A 4 PTS
3- NCD McDonald 1G 1A 2 PTS

Edwards only had to make 17 saves as the Ducks outshot the Underground 31-19. New Castle again dominated the face-off circle winning 66% with Bobby Clarke winning 9 of 11. Bob Froese was the beleaguered Chicago goalie allowing all 7 goals.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A terrific homestand for the Ducks as they win all three games each against a division rival – and inject themselves right back into both the division race and the playoff hunt. New Castle finally got its offense going as their #1 line wreaked havoc on all three opponents. LW Lanny McDonald scored SIX goals with 4 assists (10 points), C Barry Pederson dominated faceoffs and scored 2 goals with EIGHT assists, and RW Rick Middleton scored FIVE goals with 4 assists. Overall, in the three games, the line had THIRTEEN goals and 16 assists.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome the Michigan Stags and Texas Brahmas this week. The Legends are currently in third place in the Adams Division and have the fifth-best record in the conference.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 5, MIC 2

Steve Yzerman’s 23rd goal at 2:52 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie and opened the floodgates on a three-goal third period, as Ohio defeated Michigan, 5-2.

Tony Tanti, the MWOTHL’s leading scorer led the offense with a goal and two assists for a three-point night. Ray Bourque also added a goal and two assists for the winners. Pat Riggin stopped 32 shots in the victory.

Michigan got its goals from Doug Smail and Bobby Carpenter (shorthanded). Grant Fuhr absorbed the loss and had 27 saves.

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 6, TEX 3

Tim Kerr’s 18th goal at 3:35 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie and paved the way to a four-goal third period, as Ohio dropped Texas, 6-3.

The Legends surrendered three first-period goals and had a stellar performance from Mike Liut after that. Liut turned away 21 shots after the first period, including a penalty shot late in the third, to finish with 26 saves. Steve Yzerman and Rich Sutter each had a goal and an assist to pace the offense.

Brent Sutter, Kent Nilsson, and Walter Poddubny all lit the lamp for Texas.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio takes a pair of wins at Legends Arena to continue its chase in the Adams Division. Waiting for results from the rest of the league, Ohio currently rests at the top of the division…for now.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, which despite the occasional win seems destined for a losing season at this point (mounting losses on the road such as the latest reported setback at Pittsburgh don’t inspire any confidence of any sort of some late-season turnaround), hosted two games this week versus Brooklyn and Charlestown.
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In a nip-and-tuck affair, the Dynamo and Rats played to a 5-5 tie in regulation but a Laurie Boschman goal with 1:29 remaining in the five-minute overtime lifted Charlotte to the 6-5 victory.

Brooklyn, which trailed 5-3, rallied with two goals late in the third period (from Bo Berglund and defenseman Marc Chorney) to force overtime and at least salvage itself a point. Brooklyn fired 38 saves on Charlotte goalie Doug Keans and got goals from five different players.

Glenn Anderson led the Dynamo with two goals that had lifted Charlotte to a 4-2 lead before the Rats rallied.

Three stars (from Charlotte)
1: Anderson 2 G
2. Charlie Simmer 1 G, 3 Pts
3. Defenseman Tomas Eriksson 1 G, 2 Pts

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte needed this win at home to maintain some sort of momentum, but alas couldn’t hold onto a 2-1 lead going into the second half of this contest and ultimately fell 6-3 to the Chiefs despite firing 44 shots.

Charlestown erased the 2-1 deficit with unanswered goals from Bernie Nicholls, defenseman Ric Nattress, Mario Tremblay, and Doug Sheddan, the last goal coming on the power play to put Charlestown ahead 5-2 with 7:49 left in the third. Tony McKegney added an empty netter for Charlestown in the final 33 seconds.

Dan Bouchard shined for the Chiefs with 41 saves, and Paul Coffey contributed for the winning side with 4 assists.

Three stars (all Charlestown):
1. Tremblay 2 G
2. Nattress 1 G, 3 Pts
3. Coffey 4 A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: With its best statistical netminder in the crease in Doug Keans for two home games, the Dynamo must settle for a split — with the win needing to occur in the five-minute overtime. Charlotte also dropped the road contest this week to last-place Pittsburgh. You are what your record says you are, and there just doesn’t seem to be quite enough depth or talent for a prolonged winning streak that would be needed to catch Cap Jack in the division to clinch a playoff spot: ownership will continue playing on and evaluating this current product on the ice.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one game this week as the Chiefs from Charlestown come to town. Texas continues to muddle along just under .500.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Charlestown Chiefs
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS This one starts a defensive struggle as Bannerman and Bouchard pitch first-period shutouts. Things heat up in the second as MacInnis starts the scoring on the PP for a 1-0 Chief’s lead. Nilsson and Carlson answer for Texas, but Krushelnyski and Nicholls finish off the second and the Chiefs lead 3-2 after 2. Hunter ties it again early in the 3rd, but Stastny scores on the PP for a 4-3 lead for Charlestown. With the goalie pulled, Taylor scores for Texas and we head to OT. After a scoreless 5 minutes, both teams head home with a point.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Blah. About sums it up.

Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes welcomes Portland and Texas to town this week.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Smythe leading Portland enters the game 10 points ahead of expansion Andes. It’s SOR in the arena as Wayne Gretzky comes to town. Andes actually plays probably one of their best games this year. They score first and have the Squatch playing catch up for most of the game. As the clock starts to wind down and the fans get ready for OT the Mountaineers pull off a small miracle as Jim Jackson puts one into the net with 1:20 and seals the win for the home team.

1st -Goulet
2nd -Sutter
3rd – Foligno

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The second home game of the week sees the Lone Star representatives Texas take on the Mountaineers. Texas finds itself in 2nd place in the Smythe to start the week and 2 points ahead of Andes in the standings. Andes sleeps walk through most of the first period as Texas just out skates them on all phases and goes up 2 – 1 after 20. The 2nd period and the first half of the 3rd period prove to be somewhat meh, but the final 10 changes all that. Andes gets to 3 – 2 and 90 seconds later Texas goes back up 4 – 2. With just under two to go in the game Andes pulls within one. The next time they have the puck they pull the goalie and Texas makes them pay the price to go up 5 -3. Andes coaching decides to stay with the skating advantage and it pays off as they manage to put 2 goals past Bannerman in under 30 seconds to tie 5 – 5. The teams then play the OT but neither team comes scores.
1st Star – Suter
2nd Star – Rota
3rd Star – Nilsson
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes has its best back-to-back home games this week taking 4 out of possible 6 points from divisional opponents.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A huge week on the Island, starting off with a Battle of the Mitten State. Then the top 2 teams in the Norris Division come to Bullwinkle Arena for a possible preview of the playoffs.

Michigan, Syracuse, and Dallas.

GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Michigan Stags
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Teams wipe the zeros off the board real early, with a goal from Wilson, followed by a goal from Carpenter. 77 seconds in, we are tied at 1. A Giles minor penalty puts the Moose on the PK, and they respond with a shortie from Rogers to take a 2-1 lead. Follow with a minor by Donnely, and this time its Price with the shortie for the Moose. THAT’S!! how you do a penalty kill. 3-1 Moose. Michigan kills off a minor. Then a Moose minor overlaps fighting penalty majors for Messier and Price. The Moose kill the minor, but Michigan follows that up with a goal from Bullard. The rest of the period expires uneventfully, and off to intermission with the Moose up 3-2.

2nd period is an avalanche of Michigan goals. First Gardner pops one in early. Then the Moose get it going first with overlapping minor and major to give the Stags some 5 on 3 action. Carpenter first, and then Bullard each with a PP goal. Moose can’t get any defense going and watch Ogrodnick score 2, and Turgeon adds one more, and as the 2nd period mercifully ends, the Stags are up 8-3.

Moose makes a valiant attempt in the 3rd, shutting down the Stags, and getting their offense on track. They crank out goals from Propp, Rogers, MacLean, and Kurri to make it a one-goal game with 2 minutes to go. The Stags wake up and frustrate the Moose the last attempt and hang on for the 8-7 win.

Final – Stags 8, Moose 7

1st star – Carpenter 2G, 4pts
2nd – Ogrodnick 2G, 3pts
3rd – Bullard 2G

The pummeling continues in the 2nd with goals from Campbell and Ladouceur to push the lead to 5 before the Bulldogs take advantage of a Moose penalty and get a PP goal of their own by Larouche.

3rd period sees the Moose add one more goal from Terrion, and the game ends 6-1 Moose

1st star – Beers 2G
2nd – Ladouceur 1G 2pts
3rd – Melanson 29 saves

GAME #3 – VISITING TEAM: Dallas Drakes
GAME #3: DALLAS DRAKES VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE The Moose mojo carries into this game as they kill off an early minor, and then take advantage of a Dallas minor and tally a PP goal from Quinn. Period ends Moose up 1-0

2nd period sees 2 minor fights to create some 4 on 4 action. Kurri scores on the first open ice to make it 2-0. Dallas responds at full strength with a goal from Brickley. Period ends with the Moose up 2-1.

Dallas kills a minor early in the 3rd, and then cranks out 2 goals, Brickley and Dionne, to take a 3-2 lead. Moose respond 2 minutes later with a rare goal from Giles to tie it at 3. A Price penalty allows the Drakes a PP opportunity which they use quickly to get a goal from Mullen, and the Drakes are up 4-3. The Moose kill off another minor, and with 5 minutes left, go into desperation mode. As the clock drops below 2 minutes, the Moose go maximum desperation and pull the goalie, and it works with Kurri sneaking in close and getting a good pass from Eaves to tie the game at 4. On the ensuing faceoff, Kurri returns the favor and feeds Eaves on the push into the zone, and Eaves gets his first goal of the season, the game-winner.

Final Moose 5, Drakes 4

1st star – Kurri 2G 4pts
2nd – Eaves 1G 3pts
3rd – Mullen 1G 4pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 18 goals in 3 games show the offense is really clicking now. ………….. But that defense? …….. EW !!!

2 wins = 4 points. But we lost that battle with the Stags ……….. Argh!!!

Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago and Brooklyn come to town.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. DALLAS DRAKES Chicago comes out of the gate like Gorillas released from cages. John Anderson scores 2 minutes in and with Jan Ludvig getting a 5-minute boarding major, Denis Savard, and Mike Bossy both score on the power play to give the Underground a 3-0 lead before the 7-minute mark. Illka Sinisalo scores a goal at the 10-minute mark to cut the game down to 3-1. The game took a crazy turn at the 18:51 mark as Don Lever falls down at center ice turning the puck over to Greg Gilbert how gets it over to Rob Ramage who blasts a shot that Terry O’Reilly deflects past BoB Froese to cut the lead to 3-2.
Andy Brickley comes out and evens the score 5:37 into the second but Stefan Persson wrists a beautiful shot past Glen Hanlon to put Chicago back on top 4-3. Andy Brickley scores again to tie the game up at 4 but J.P. Kelly puts the Underground ahead 5-4 at the second intermission.
Bob Froese keeps the Underground ahead until the 13:25 mark when Andy Brickley completes the hat trick for the Drakes and ties the game up. The game would stay knotted until the 19:13 mark when……Andy Brickley scores his fourth of the game…..Dallas would add 2 empty netters in the next 45 seconds for the 8-5 win.
GAME #2: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Harbor Rats strike first with a goal from Mark Johnson, and Peter Sundstrom puts the Harbor Rats up 2-0 at the first intermission. Greg Gilbert and Joe Mullen both score in the second as the Drakes tie it up 2-2 going into the second intermission. Chris Valentine gets Brooklyn up by a goal but Ron Duguay ties it at 3. The tie was short-lived as Anton Stastny give the Harbor Rats the 4-3 lead beating Roberto Romano stick side. The Rats would stay ahead until Randy Gregg floats a wrister through a screen beating Greg Stefan for the sister kisser.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The amazing comeback against a good Chicago team, a head-scratching tie against a struggling Brookly team.
