CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After some wheeling and dealing during the holiday break, the CapJack Rangers get 1 home game to show off their new talent – and it’s against the team they did the trading with. So it’s not strange to see all the names on the scoreboard for goals and assists – just the teams they got them for!!
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CAPJACK RANGERS 1 minute in, Crowder scores for the Rangers assisted by new teammate Haworth. Then 10 minutes later Derlago ties it up with his 2nd goal of the season and that was it for the 1st.

Then the Rangers score 2 goals in the middle of the 2nd – Arniel assisted by Crowder and again Haworth! Deblois gets the next goal and one of the assists came from Sittler. 3 goals so far and a newcomer has factored in all 3! But 25 seconds after the DeBlois goal – former Ranger Moe Mantha strikes scoring his 7th of the season (1st for Pittsburgh – boy he was tough to give up) and it’s 3-2 CapJack after 2 periods.

But Pittsburgh wasn’t finished – 9 minutes into the 3rd, Sleigher beats Resch (with an assist from Mantha) to tie the game. 2 minutes later Larmer scores, and with 3 unanswered goals, the Spirit have the 4-3 lead! This is not following the script. It doesn’t get any better as we moved to the final 2 minutes. Finally with 1:17 left Resch is able to leave and suddenly the ice is filled with a bunch of former Spirit players in the purple and gold of the Rangers. Pettersson, Sittler, DeBlois, they all take their cracks at Wamsley, but no dice. Finally, Sittler shoots and Wamsley makes the glove save with 18 seconds to go. Faceoff in the Pittsburgh end, Rangers gain control – DeBlois, toe Pettersson to Sittler – shoots – GOAL! The game is tied with 10 seconds left. Now that’s a script!

So we go to OT – back and forth, Pettersson and Haworth trying to beat their old team and Daoust (already with an assist) trying to beat his old team, but Wamsley and Resch are stopping things and bodies are diving all over the ice. Then as the final minute approaches and the Rangers have iced the puck a faceoff in the Rangers end. Derlago has it, but Pettersson shoves him into the boards – he gets it, over to Korab and the Rangers work it out with a fresh line. Suave to Silk, to Ludzik – back to Silk, he shoots and beats Wamsley glove side for the winning GOAL! (52 seconds left in the game).. Rangers take it 5-4! Teams were even in shots (33), hits 17/18, scoring changes 26/27 and the Rangers swamped them in FO (58% to 41%) but it all boiled down to which goalie could hold on in OT.
STARS (all CAP)
1. DeBlois 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Crowder 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Sittler 1 goal, 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Rangers win an OT squeaker against Pittsburgh (supposed to be easy, but heck we’ll take the win).

New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week for the Ducks. It’s against the Michigan Stags who have played New Castle tough all season (1-1-1). During the break, the Ducks made their third trade of the season, sending starting defenseman Harold Snepts and a pick to Charlestown for goalie Dan Bouchard. Snepsts had been paired with Dennis Potvin on the Ducks #1 defense so the move will cause a shakeup on the backline. However, New Castle is trailing in the playoff hunt and hopes that Bouchard will be an upgrade over Don Edwards as the Ducks #2 goalie
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Michigan Stags
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS A shaky debut for Dan Bouchard as he gives up a goal on the first shot he faces – at the TWENTY ONE SECOND mark, as John Ogrodnick nets #16. Bouchard was shaky throughout but tightened up in the clutch in the third period when he stopped 12 of 13 shots to come away with a 5-4 victory for the Ducks

After Ogrodnick’s goal, New Castle tied it on a goal by Ryan Walter. After Butch Goring made it 2-1 Stags, Tony Currie continued his fine play with his third score of the year to tie it at 2-2, after one period.
In the second period, Bob Carpenter scored at 1:18 and Michigan led once again, 3-2. Mark Osborne tied it a little over a minute later and the teams went to the locker room after two periods, tied at 3-3. In the third period, it was up and down action and it was Currie who lit the lamp for the second time to put New Castle ahead 4-3 at the 4:22 mark. 5 1/2 minutes later Currie got the HAT TRICK, beating Ron Low and getting a big insurance goal. It would prove to be the game-winner when Gardner scored at 16:17 to make it 5-4. The Stags pulled the goalie and stormed the New Castle net in the final two minutes but Bouchard made save after save to come away with the victory.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Tony Currie 3 G HAT TRICK
2- NCD Ryan Walter 1G 1 A 2 PTS
3- NCD Bobby Clarke 3 A

Clarke also won 15 of 22 faceoffs as the Ducks won 66.7% of the draws. NCD outshot MIC 36-26. In the third period it was 16-13 SOG in favor of NCD.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get a much-needed win against the Stags, which was all the more important since NCD lost this week, on the road, against Syracuse. New Castle now awaits the results of a HUGE road contest against the first-place Dallas Drakes. At the moment, New Castle is 21-17-2 with 44 points. They trail Dallas by 5 points for first place in the Norris but the Stars have 3 games in hand. In the battle to make the playoffs, the Ducks trail Ohio by 3 points (Ohio with four games in hand) and Syracuse by 2 (with the Ducks playing one less game). They also lead St Clair Shores by 1 point but St Clair has four games in hand. As the season reaches the halfway point, it is a terrific battle among all the teams in the Conference, with Chicago also in the thick of things with 42 points, only 2 behind the Ducks
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte travels to St. Clair Shores for the Saints-only home game.
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Saints see some of their recent trade pay off as Stastny scores his 18th and the Saints take the lead in the first period.

In the 2nd, Charlotte dominates play and Boschman gets number 11 on a power play. Then, Moller scores number 2 two minutes later. With 3:14 to go in the 2nd, McCarthy scores number 32 to tie it.

In the 3rd, Huddy scores his 4th on a power play. Then, with 1:45 left to go. Hawerchuk scores for the Dynamo to tie the game.

No one scores in OT.

Moog was sensational for Charlotte. The Saints outshot the Dynamo 47-20.

Charlotte 3 SCS 3

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints and Dynamo tie 3-3.

Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Division Rival, St. Claire Shores comes north to the Island for some interstate action. Both teams are in the hunt for playoff action this season.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Evidently, Wade Campbell and Doug Wilson really don’t care for each other. As soon as the puck dropped, so did the gloves, and the two warriors each earned 5 minutes in the time-out chair. A little later, it was Taylor and Quinn, for 2 minutes each. And near the end of the 1st period, Snepsts got a penalty for actual hockey play-related infractions, and the Moose are unable to convert. In the meantime, a bunch of guys skated back and forth, but the period ends 0-0. Looks to be a somewhat boring game.

2nd period finally delivers what the fans came for. A Rogers goal early followed by a PK effort nets a shortie for Ruskowski, and the Moose are up 2-0 less than 7 minutes in. Moose kill off another minor at the halfway mark. A skirmish between McCarthy and Campbell (must be in a bad mood today) followed by a Francis penalty creates some 4 on 3 action. And the Saints apparently like the open ice, as Wilson runs away with a steal and gets him a shortie too. 2-1 now. Shortly after the ice fills back up, Another Saint minor penalty leads to a PP goal by Kurri. and after the final 4 minutes bleed off the clock, it’s 3-1 Moose at the break.

Francis and Rogers in a skirmish early, and then we got down to some hockey. Francis and Stastny score a minute apart, and it’s tied 3-3 with 14 minutes to go. Kurri answers a minute later to give the Moose the lead. All quiet for 8 minutes, and then it’s Federko making it 4-4 with just over 4 minutes left. Kurri gets his hat-trick with just under 90 seconds to go, 5-4 Moose. Then the Saints pull their goalie and as the clock winds down near 30 seconds, they get a flurry of shots and rebounds, culminating in a goal by Gustafsson. It 5-5 and we get some free hockey,

The Saints dominate with a 5-2 SOG advantage in OT, but it’s a desperation shot from the point by MacLean with only 12 seconds on the clock that lights the lamp and gets the Moose a 6-5 OT win.

Final Moose 6, Saints 5 OT

1st star – Kurri 3G
2nd – Federko 1G 3pts
3rd – Eaves 3A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A real barnburner of a 3rd period, but a good finish for the home fans who got some extra drinking in, and a W.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: St. Clair Shores took the short drive down Lakeshore/Jefferson to downtown Detroit to take on the Stags, while Ohio journeyed up I-75 to play expansion Michigan.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Eddie Mio was the surprise starter in goal for the Stags and Nick Polano’s hunch paid off as Mio turned aside 37 SOG and Michigan was fortunate to get a 5-4 OT win on Sylvain Turgeon’s PPG. Michigan had led 4-2 with less than a minute to play, when St. Clair Shores shocked the Stags’ faithful, scoring goals 18 seconds apart by Duchesne and Federko to send the game into extra time.
GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Mio’s performance against St. Clair Shores earned him another start, but this time he was horrible, stopping only 12/15 SOG, while his counterpart Pat Riggin was amazing, with 51 stops, stealing a 3-2 win for the Legends. Steve Yzerman led the offense for the visitors with a pair of PPGs.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Consistency is still something that the Stags are unable to embrace as their so-so season continues.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlestown will be our opponent for this week’s home game.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Charlestown Chiefs
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Going into the game Andes is 3rd in the Smythe and Charlestown is 4th separated by 1 point in the standings. Both teams are battling out to not be the winner of the wooden spoon in the Smyte. The Chiefs hit the ice with an incredible amount of energy from the get-go and they manage to keep the Mountaineers on their heels for the whole game.

1st Star – Coffey
2nd Star – Shedden
3rd Star -Malarchuk

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes has a chance to keep a hold on third in the Smythe but fails to do so in losing to the Chiefs 2 – 1.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A couple of division opponents travel to Texas this week and 1st place Portland and 3rd pace Andes come to town. Texas is plodding through another season and needs to get going or this will be another wasted season.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS The Portland Gretzky’s are first up. The first line for Portland is outstanding, and they started this off with a bang 49 seconds in as Gretzky gets the go-ahead goal. Foligno makes it 2-0 Portland to end the 1st. Rota gets Texas back into the game with the lone marker of the second. Gretzky does it again just about halfway through the third but Hughes scores 19 seconds later to make it 3-2 Portland. Sutter ties it up with the goalie and we are headed to OT. The dreaded first line for Portland strikes at the 1:32 mark, as Ciccarelli gets the game-winner. The top line is certainly well represented in the 3 stars:

1. Gretzky 2G, 2A
2. Ciccarelli 1G, 2A
3. Foligno 1G, 2A

GAME #2: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Andes comes in to close out the week. The team’s battled to a scoreless tie through 1. It stays that way through most of the 2nd, but Naslund gets Andes on the board with less than 2 minutes left. Gilmour strikes 6 minutes into the 3rd for a 2-0 Andes lead. Nilsson finally gets Texas on the board a few minutes later, but Fox restores the 2 goal Andes lead. Texas pulls the goalie, again, and Taylor brings the Brahmas within one with a minute left. Texas can’t get the equalizer and Andes holds on 3-2.

1. Fox 1G
2. Naslund 1G
3. Golmour 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Yuck. No points at home this week, and with a tie in my road game 1 out of 6 for the week This season is going nowhere fast.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Charlotte MWOTHL entry is showing signs of life lately: after an early-season trade that dispatched a pair of all-star level veterans for two second-round draft picks and a bag of pucks, the Dynamo has actually played much better. It carried a 7-4 record from December into January as it claws back near .500 (13-17-4). The playoffs remain a longshot with three teams in the Adams division enjoying successful seasons and CapJack in the Patrick winning everything in plain sight — but a first-ever winning record for Charlotte is still within reach and it would be a worthy accomplishment after three prior years of futility. A home game against Pittsburgh this week was to indicate which way this team was headed entering the new year.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo always seems to have issues against its pesky division rival from Pittsburgh but this time, capitalized from a balanced attack, getting all of its goals in even-strength fashion from six different players to douse the Spirit 6-4.

Charlotte overcame a hattrick from Pittsburgh center Bill Derlago, who singlehandedly managed to get three of the 27 Spirit shots past winning Charlotte goalie Alan Bester. After a 1-1 tie going into the first intermission (courtesy of a Derlago goal that knotted the score), Charlotte outscored Pittsburgh 4-2 in the second period.

Three defensemen found the net for Charlotte, Thomas Erikkson, Randy Moller, and Joel Quenneville. Coming into the game the trio had only combined for just eight goals, with Erikkson scoring five of those. Charlotte outshot Pittsburgh 35-27.

Three stars:
Star 1: PIT Derlago 3 G
Star 2: CHD Anders Hedberg 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 3: CHD Quenneville 1 G, 2 Pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte wins its only home game of the week and ties on the road at Saint Clair Shores to get this 1984 year started in a positive direction.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game against Andes
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Andes Mountaineers
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Portland gets a 1st-period goal from Perreault (5) but Andes responds with a goal from Goulet (23) early in the 2nd period. Portland takes the lead with 59 seconds remaining in the game on a goal from Ciccarelli (15) but once again Andes responds 15 seconds later on a goal from Fox (11). After a scoreless OT period, the teams end the game in a 2-2 tie
WEEKLY SUMMARY: One game one tie
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends have a light week, welcoming their enemies from the north — Mackinac Island — for the lone home game. Can Ohio narrow the gap with the Adams Division leaders?
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Mackinac Island Moose
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. OHIO LEGENDS MIM 6, OHIO 2

The answer to the above question is no.

Brian Propp netted a pair of goals and Don Beaupre re-directed 31 shots in the 6-2 for Mackinac Island over Ohio. The Moose also lit the lamp twice during four power plays. Dan Quinn notched a goal and dished off three assists for a four-point night for Mackinac Island.

The Moose scored three first-period goals to race to a lead they would never relinquish. Mackinac Island extends its lead over the Legends to five points and the season approaches the midway point.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: One home game, one epic letdown. The good news for the Ohio Legends is that the next five games are at home, which provides an opportunity to sleep in their own beds and maybe dent the lead that Mackinac Island is building.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: More of the same in Pittsburgh… having to give away free hot dogs and beers to get half the arena full. But is there hope on the horizon? Time will tell…
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT A battle for the worst record in the league.

Brooklyn proves to be 2nd worst as they beat the Spirit 5-3.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: “Wake me up when the season ends…” – Spirit Head Coach, Tom Atkins
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas plays archrival New Castle
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes come out firing and35 seconds in Patrick Sundstrom gives the Drakes the 1-0 lead. The Ducks as they always do come back with 3 unanswered goals by Middleton, McDonald, and Potvin to give the Ducks the 3-1 lead at the 15:03 mark. Marcel Dionne cut the lead 50 seconds later deflecting a shot by Rob Ramage. The Ducks went into the first intermission leading 3-2. In the second period, Sundstrom and Boutette exchanged goals as the Ducks lead 4-3 going into the third. Sinisalo tied the score up on the power play at the 4-minute mark and the game stayed that way until the 9-minute mark when Greg Gilbert put the Drakes ahead for good. The Drakes hold on 5-4
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes squeak out a tight one
