WEEKLY SUMMARY: When something stinks & you know it, you should get rid of it. Chicago has opened the door for trade talks on ANY PLAYER… Let the offers come in!
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week for the Ducks as they continue to be on the outside looking in for a playoff spot. And that one game is a rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals as New Castle hosts the Cap Jack Rangers. The Rangers lead the Patrick Division and hold the second-best record in the MWOTHL. They have beaten the Ducks 2 of 3 so far this season
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS The Ducks start newly acquired goalie Dan Bouchard and the Rangers go with #2 goalie Steve Weeks. Things start badly for the Ducks as defenseman Barry Beck scores at the 48-second mark beating Bouchard on the first shot of the game! Rick Middleton tied it less than 2 minutes later and the game stayed 1-1 until Darryl Sittler scored at 18:07 to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at intermission. In the second period, Keith Crowder scored early to make it 3-1. Lanny McDonald brought the Ducks back to within one and then came the crusher as Ludzik scored for CapJack with 2 seconds left in the period. 4-2 Rangers after two.
This was actually a very one-sided game – in favor of New Castle – as they outshot Cap Jack 43-20! And in the frantic third period, the Ducks came in waves outshooting the Rangers 11-5. But Steve Weeks was up to the task as he did not allow a goal in the period as the Rangers hold on for the 4-2 win.THREE STARS:
1- CAP Weeks 41 saves!
2- CAP Sittler 1G 1 A
3- CAP- Crowder 1GNew Castle’s Barry Pederson won 18 of 24 faceoffs. Cap Jack defenseman Cochrane had 20 PIM including two fighting majors and misconduct (these teams don’t like each other!)
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks lose their only home game of the week and hope to do better on the road as they battle for a playoff spot.
Charlestown Chiefs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A pair of home games.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS 3 Chief goals in the 3rd give us a 4-3 lead, but then in typical fashion, we blow the lead with 1:02 left, then lose it on OT.

Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Saints take on two tough teams, CapJack and Chicago at home.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Saints come out quick with 4 goals in the first period. CapJack gets on the power play, though, and start meaning business. Crowder ends up with a power play and Trottier scores his 28th. CapJack fights back within 1 goal several times, and the game ends that way. The Saints survive the last 7:54 to earn the win.

The Saints win 6-5.

SCS outshoots the Rangers 16-4 in the 1st period, but the Rangers make up the gap.

1-Crowder hat trick
2- Trottier 1 goal and 4 assists.
3-Federko 2 goals

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS This was a back and forth game. Chicago has 2 breakaways that lead to big goals. Bossy scores 2 goals and Peter Stastny scores 2 for the Underground. Marian Stastny scores 1 for the Saints.

Chicago 5 SCS 3

1-Bossy
2-Stastny

WEEKLY SUMMARY: SCS splits and defeats CapJack and loses to Chicago.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three home games for the Adams Division cellar-dwelling Stags who aspire to the .500 mark.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags stun the Adams Division leaders, trouncing them 7-4. John Ogrodnick and Mark Messier had 3-point games, while the Moose’s Don Beaupre left in favor of Rollie Melanson after surrendering 6.
GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Chiefs fall to the Stags 6-3, as Messier stays hot with 1G+3A and Bobby Carpenter notches a pair. The Chiefs’ Don Edwards is yanked after giving up 6 goals on 18 shots.
GAME #3: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Rats become Michigan’s latest victim when the Stags record their third consecutive home-ice victory by a 5-4 margin. Johnny O, Messier, and Dave Babych each had a 3-point night.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: No doubt the best homestand of the season for the fledgling Stags, with 3 straight victories. Grant Fuhr starts and wins them all.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games. What are the chances of a win?
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT New Castle comes to town… same OLD story.

New Castle 4, Pittsburgh 1

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT The Sasquatch make themselves known and come away with the 4-3 win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: … slim and none.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland hosts Syracuse in the only game of the week
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH After a scoreless first period, Syracuse gets a goal from Broten (14) in the 2nd period to take a 1-0 lead. Portland manages to tie the score with 6:16 in the third period on a goal from Ciccarelli (19) and sends the game to overtime. In overtime, Portland’s Siltanen commits a tripping period 53 seconds into the OT period giving Larouche a penalty shot, which he converts for the Syracuse win
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland loses the only game of the week in OT
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends continue their chase of the Adams Division lead with four home contests at Legends Arena this week.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. OHIO LEGENDS SCS 4, OHIO 3

Former Legends center Bernie Federko’s goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation time broke a 3-3 tie and gave the win to Saint Clair Shores. The goal capped off a hat trick for Federko and spoiled a potential overtime scenario in the game–that Tony Tanti had created just 40 seconds earlier.

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 3, POR 2

Borje Salming’s goal with 4:22 remaining gave Ohio a 3-1 lead and Mike Foligno’s goal with 24 seconds remaining narrowed the score to a final of 3-2 for Ohio over Portland.

The fun in this game was evident from the ten power plays awarded and three power-play goals. Mike Liut took the win in goal for his 16th victory of the year — stopping 41 shots.

GAME #3: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. OHIO LEGENDS BRO 4, OHIO 1

Phil Housley scored a pair of goals, including the winner, in a 4-1 Brooklyn win over Ohio. A total of 44 penalty minutes and two fights highlighted this contest. The turning point? The Harbor Rats capitalizing on a pair of power-play goals, while shutting out the Legends on special teams.

Brian Hayward picked up the win with 28 saves.

GAME #4: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 4, AND 3 (OT)

Steve Yzerman’s 29th goal of the season at 2:10 of overtime ended the contest and gave Ohio a 4-3 win over Andes. Gord Kluzak scored a goal and had an assist for Ohio. The Mountaineers had a furious finish, as Guy Chouinard’s fifth goal of the campaign with 43 seconds remaining forced the overtime session.

A typical Legends game broke out, as 42 penalty minutes and a pair of fights highlighted the affair. Mike Liut notched his 17th win of the season with 22 saves. Al Jensen was the hard-luck loser with 32 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Legends survive the week with a 2-2 record and remain in second place in the Adams Division.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes has a very busy home schedule this week with 3 games. First up playing the role of Marsha is Pittsburgh, playing the role of Jan will be Mackinac Island, and finally playing little Cindy will be Dallas. We’re hoping to get as many points from this week’s series of games as possible.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Spirit comes to town with the lowest points for the season. Both teams come out firing and within the first couple minutes of the puck dropping each team has scored a goal. Andes takes the lead for good 10 minutes later. After a scoreless second period the Mountaineer offense kicks in and they score 3 additional goals before giving up the 2nd goal to the Spirit with only 9 seconds left in the game.

1st Star – Smyl
2nd Star – Sutter
3rd Star – Fox

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS It’s SRO as the league leader Moose comes to town. Fourteen minutes into the game the home fans erupt as Doug Gilmour puts the home team ahead. A minute later Kurri rains on that parade and ties up the game. The next 10 minutes see a scoring explosion by the Moose as they put 3 goals past Jensen to go up 4 – 1. They would score 1 more in the third period to win going away 5 – 1.

1st Star – Beers
2nd Star -MacLean
3rd Star – Kurri

GAME #3: DALLAS DRAKES VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The final home game of the week sees the Norris leading, second-best team in the league, Drakes come to town. Again it’s a full house for this battle. After 13 minutes the Mountaineers take a 2 – 0 lead on Dallas. 5 seconds before the horn blows Duguay puts Dallas on board. Andes scores a goal in the second to head into the final 20 minutes up 3 – 1. A few minutes into the period Dallas again pulls within a goal but this time Andes gets the job done and scores their 4th goal with 8 minutes to go before the end.

1st Star – Goulet
2nd Star – Duguay
3rd Star – Broten

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes plays the top 2 teams in the league and the team at the bottom of the league. The Mountaineers earn two wins with this week’s play at home. We might have a shot to get a playoff spot if our defense and our defensive special teams keep putting for the effort each game.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three games at home
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The struggling Harbor Rats come into Dallas with a chip on their shoulder. Mark Johnson scores the only goal of the first period as the Harbor Rats lead 1-0. Bobby Smith gives Brooklyn a 2-0 lead but back-to-back goals by Mike Ramsey and Joe Mullen even the score going into the third. Mike Gartner wrists a shot past Glen Hanlon to give the Rats the lead in the third but Joey Mullen scores to tie it at the 18:32 mark…….and into overtime, the Rats take home the win with a goal by BO Berglund. 4-3 Rats
GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Texas jumps on Roberto Romano 1:13 into the game and the Brahmas take the 1-0 lead right away. Marcel Dionne ties it up on the Power Play at the 7-minute mark. The Drakes continue to bomb Murray Bannerman but can’t solve him. Darcy Rota puts home a rebound from Ron Greschner on the power play to give Texas the lead 2-1. At the end of 1, the Drakes have 17 shots and the Brahmas 4 but the Brahmas lead 2-1. The Drakes continue to dominate only to watch Bannerman stone Dionne and Mullen on consecutive breakaways, but he couldn’t keep Patrick Sundstrom from scoring on a great feed from Greg Gilbert to tie the score at the 17:41 mark of the second period. Less than 2 minutes later Randy Gregg put a wrister through a screen to give the Drakes the 3-2 lead heading into the 3rd period. Greg Paslawski scores at the 4-minute mark to give the Drakes the 4-2 lead and as it seemed that the Drakes were going to pull away Willy Lindstrom scores to cut the game to 4-3. Texas pulls Bannerman but the Drakes Bobby Gould scores 2 empty netters and Joe Mullen scores on Bannerman to give the Drakes a 7-3 win.
GAME #3: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Moose and Drakes have a defensive struggle as the game is tied 0-0 after 2 periods. Paul Baxter breaks the scoreless tie 1:23 into the third period and Ron Duguay gives the Drakes a 2-0 lead at the 5:19 mark. Brian Propp gets the Moose on the board at the 8:27 mark and Alain Cote ties the game at 12:34. The teams had a great back and forth chances as the game headed to overtime but Jari Kurri wristed a great shot past Hanlon to give the Moose the victory 3-2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes drop 2 of 3

Stars
1. Andreychuk (Tex) 2G, 1A
2. Larmer (Pit) 2G
3. Paiement (Pit) 2G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Can’t beat 4 points
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: If Charlotte was going to make up ground in the Patrick division — this week was it, considering four consecutive games at home — albeit entirely against teams with winning records. The playoffs are likely a long shot at the halfway mark as the Dynamo cedes further ground to CapJack but there is still a lot to play for, including a first-ever winning record. (Onto the less in-depth writeups than normal with lots of games to report at the deadline:)
GAME #1:CAPJACK RANGERS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO CapJack broke a 1-1 tie after the first period, outscoring Charlotte 4-1 in the second, en route to a 7-5 victory. It was a crucial division matchup with Charlotte trailing the Rangers by double digits for first place. Trailing 5-2 in the third, Charlotte struck first in the third with two goals to reduce the margin to one. But Bryan Trottier (two goals and first star honors), recorded what proved to be the GWG off assists from Pettersson and Korab with 6:33 remaining in the third that lifted the Rangers to a 6-4 lead that held up. Charlotte’s Charlie Simmer scored a late even-strength goal in the last minute of the third but that was followed immediately by a Trottier empty netter with 36 ticks left in the final period.
GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In an absolutely wild affair, Charlotte got a game-winning goal in OT from Charlie Simmer (1:51 of the extra five minutes of play), to prevail 8-7. The floodgates opened in the third period, like the Underground, trailing 2-1 after two, outscored Charlotte 6-5, with first-star Rick Vaive leading the way for Chicago with an incredible late hat trick. The Underground built a 7-5 lead before quick-strike goals in the last two minutes of regulation by the Dynamo’s Randy Moller and Glenn Anderson forced overtime.
GAME #3: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In impressive fashion, Charlotte, sparked by three first-period goals, knocked off the Smythe-leading Sasquatch 5-3. The Dynamo got goals from five different players but it was Laurie Boschman who took first-star honors with a goal and three assists. Dynamo goalie Doug Keans (30 saves) held off an incredible third-period barrage as the Sasquatch fired off 20 of its 33 shots, but failed to find the net during those last 20 minutes. A power-play goal by Charlotte’s Charlie Simmer 1:06 into the third proved to be the final goal as Keans shut down the Sasquatch from there. Dale Hunter led Portland with two goals earlier in the game and the Great one accounted for the other.
GAME #4: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte’s bid for a winning record at home this week was thwarted by a New Castle squad very much in the hunt for a playoff bid in the West; the Ducks fired 40 shots and grabbed a 3-1 first period lead in eventually prevailing, 5-2. First star Barry Pederson’s goal with 15 seconds left in the first (assisted by Rick Middleton), gave New Castle the insurmountable two-goal lead and it proved to be the game-winner. A Dennis Potvin even-strength goal 5:43 into the second gave New Castle the even safer 4-1 cushion. Middleton and Potvin were second and third stars respectively and Billy Smith saved 29 shots for the Ducks.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Against four teams all with winning records, Charlotte can only salvage four points in this lengthy homestand. The Dynamo (now 16-20-5) surrendered 19 goals in the four contests, so improving defensively is a priority if it seeks to avoid a losing record.
