Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Spirit has been rebuilding since their back-to-back Cup championships in 79-80 and 80-81… and it hopefully has paid off this season as expectations are high with this very well-rounded team. CapJack and Charlotte come to town for the first test.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT It doesn’t take long as Steen (1) beats former Spirit netminder, Resch, just 39 seconds into the game. Ramsey (1) also scores at the 9:31 mark to make it 2-0.

CapJack gets one back when Wickenheiser (1) at 10:59 makes it 2-1, but Skriko (1) makes it 3-1 at 19:02.

Payne (1) starts the second-period scoring making it 4-2, but Robinson (1) scores on the PP to make cut the lead to 4-2.

Larmer scores his first of the season on the PP at 18:10 of the 2nd to make it 5-2.

3rd period, the Spirit continued to keep the foot on the gas as they score 3 unanswered goals by Derlago, Goulet, and Rogers to make it a lopsided 8-2 final in the home opener as they outshot the Rangers 30-14.

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT 1st Period
Anderson (1) makes it 1-0 Dynamo on the PP. Skriko (2) ties it 1-1.19 seconds into the 2nd, Anderson (2) scores his 2nd of the game (and season) to make it a 2-1 Charlotte lead.At 14:53 Larouche (1) scores on the PP to tie the game 2-2!3rd Period
Despite outshooting the Spirit 12-5 in the period, the Dynamo cannot get a puck past Wamsley. We head to OT… Both goalies make some excellent saves and we end it with a sister-kissing tie, 2-2.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1-0-1 at home to start the season off isn’t bad. Let’s see how we do on the road!
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The New Castle Ducks won the Stanley Cup two years ago. Last year, the Ducks lost in the Conference Finals. This year’s Ducks are a very different team. Gone are veteran stars such as Lanny McDonald, Ryan Walter, Bobby Clarke, and Andre Savard. The “new look” Ducks still have Rick Middleton, who last season scored 63 goals and 114 points! Instead of his old linemates, Middleton will be joined by #3 pick Mark Napier and #5 pick Mark Johnson. Much of the Duck’s defense has remained the same as veterans Denis Potvin, Brad McCrimmon, and Mark Hardy all return. Also returning is Goalie “Battlin'” Billy Smith. The 84-85 Ducks may not have a lot of offensive punch but they have good depth in role players and what should shape up as an excellent defense, including #2 pick Goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.
The Ducks open the season with three home games this week, two against Division rivals (Dallas and Chicago) and one against the always-tough Pittsburgh Spirit.
Let the season begin!
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS These long-time rivals face off at the Duck Pond and it’s a typical New Castle-Dallas game The Drakes strike first as Ila Sinisalo beats Billy Smith at 2:56 of the first period. New Castle ties it later in the period as Middleton shows that he still has the scoring touch, assisted by Mark Johnson and Denis Potvin. 1-1 after one. Dallas gets the only goal of the second period as Sinisalo scores his second, this time on a power play. 2-1 Dallas after two. In the third, the Ducks tie it at 12:02 as their new #1 line comes through again. This time it’s Mark Johnson scoring, assisted by Potvin and Middleton to tie it at 2-2. It stays that way and it looks like we are headed for OT when one of the all-time great Ducks, Marian Stastny beats Glen Hanlon with 14 seconds to go, as the Ducks get the opening night win, 3-2. Stastny played two seasons in New Castle scoring 64 goals before playing for St. Clair Shores last season. He returned to the Ducks this season as their #9 pick.

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Another long-time rival invades the Duck Pond. The Underground missed the playoffs last season but is much improved for 1984! The Ducks score first at 9:16 on a goal by #13 pick Morris Lukowich. Chicago comes right back, scoring TWO GOALS IN THE LAST MINUTE OF THE PERIOD. John Chabot tied it at 19:04 and Peter Stastny scored unassisted at 19:46 to make it 2-1 CHI after one.
In the second period, the Ducks tie it as veteran (and #11 pick) Tom Lysiak scores his first goal as a Duck (Lysiak has 151 MWHOTHL career goals, playing most recently for Mackinac Island). The Underground break the tie on a goal by Darryl Sutter and the teams go to the locker room with CHI leading 3-2 after two.
In the third, Lukowich gets his second of the game to tie it at 5:24. Less than four minutes later #8 pick Doug Smith puts it past Pelle Lindbergh, and it’s 4-3 Ducks! Rick Meagher gets a big insurance goal at 15:41, with Lukowich assisting. With a little more than a minute to go, CHI pulls the goalie and puts huge pressure on Smith. With 43 seconds to go, Bob Gainey scores on a wraparound, and it’s now 5-4. The Underground continues to press but Smith stands tall in goal and the Ducks feel lucky to come away with the 5-4 winNCD 5 CHI 4THREE STARS:

GAME #3: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS #2 pick (NCD’s first pick of the draft) John Vanbiesbrouck makes his MWOTHL debut and what a debut it is. VBK shuts out the Spirit for all but 33 seconds as the Ducks win 3-1. After a scoreless first period, NCD scored three in the second against Kelly Hrudey. Mark Hardy (1), Morris Lukowich (3), and Middleton (2) got the goals. Bill Derlago spoiled VBK’s shutout bid with 33 seconds to go, with his second goal of the season.

Vanbiesbrouck made 18 saves as NCD outshot PIT 26-19

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get off to a surprising, and terrific start, winning all three home games. New Castle’s defense shined as they allowed a total of only 7 goals in the three games.

Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago opens up the 1984-1985 Mid-West Old Tyme Hockey League Season with high hopes, the same Arena, and rumors have it, the same old crappy style of play. When will this team turn things around & be a contender again? Keep dreaming is how the papers in Chicago wrote about them in the Pre-Season.
GAME #1: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND Newly formed Hyannisport was up 3-0 late in the 2nd Period before the boo-birds started in on the Underground. “It hardly lets up from here on out,” Denis Savard said to new goaltender Pelle Lindbergh. “If I were you, I’d forget about the crowd, blow off some steam and go for a ride, forget about it”.

Chicago faired not well at the end of this one.

Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Moose get to hang some banners in sold-out Bullwinkle Arena prior to starting off the season. Great expectations as the team has a number of key players from last year returning. Ohio and Michigan are here to kick off another season with some inter-division battles.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 3, Legends 1 – Solid play by both teams with an emphasis on defense in the first period. A little skirmish between Carlyle and MacLean 5 minutes in. Minors by Price and Kerr give each team one session on the PP, but it’s the PK units who shine. The period ends scoreless.

2nd period – Anxious fans accustomed to last year’s high score getting a bit uneasy. It’s Ohio who breaks the scoreless tie 6 minutes in when Preston sneaks one past Beaupre. With 7 minutes to go, a Bothwell minor gives Ohio another good chance, but the Moose PK unit stands tall again. A couple of minutes later, it’s the Moose getting on the board with a shot close in from Zezel, new to the team this year. Just after the faceoff, a penalty by Roberts gives the Moose a chance to double up, but the Legends are up to the task and hold the game to a 1-1 tie, and the period ends.

3rd period – Ohio keeps making mental mistakes. Penalties through the period with minors by Lidster, Nill, and MacLellan. But the Moose PP unit looks inept and cannot convert on any of them. Finally, with 3 minutes to go, MacLean gets another tally for the 2nd line with help from Zezel and Frycer. Up 2-1, the Moose try and milk the clock. When the Legends finally get control of the puck, they pull the goalie and go balls out for the equalizer. After a series of shots on goal, the Moose get control and manage to manipulate the puck down ice where Kurri adds the insurance empty-netter to seal the deal.

Final Score 3-1 Moose

1st star – Zezel 1G 2pts
2nd – MacLean 1G 2pts
3rd Beaupre 30 saves

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Stags 3, Moose 2 – Just 32 seconds in Quinn fires a blast that catches Janecyk sleeping, and it’s 1-0 Moose. 7 minutes in a Marois minor gives the Stags a PP chance, but the Moose kill it off and we move on. McPhee with a minor at the 13-minute mark puts the Moose in the hole again, and this time the Stags take advantage with a goal from Carpenter. Still, in a generous mood, Bothwell with another penalty, and the Stags get one more chance. Moose kill this one off to keep the game tied. Just before the period ends, Beers and Gilbert are in a little skirmish and we finish the period tied 1-1.

2nd period – Stags put the Moose on the PP with a Shedden minor, but the Moose cannot convert. Just as the box is cleared, Duguay and Ladouceur are in a skirmish, and we get some 4-on-4 action, no blood. With 2 minutes left in the period, Duguay breaks the tie, 2-1 Stags now. Big fight between Babych and Price. 30 seconds later it’s Silk and Ladouceur in another big fight. The period ends 2-1 with 4 in the boxes.

Before anyone gets out of jail, another fight, this time Smith and Bothwell, puts each box with an occupancy of 3. This is true divisional hockey. Finally, the boxes start to clear out. Now with only 1 each in the box, the Moose tie up the game with another goal from Quinn. 12 minutes to go and it’s 2-2. Chippy on the ice, but threats by each head coach is keeping the players from dropping the gloves. Carpenter breaks the tie with 8 minutes to go, giving the Stags a 3-2 lead. The Moose throws a bunch of rubber at Janecyk in the final 8 minutes, but he is rock solid and makes the 3-2 lead stand up.

1st star – Carpenter 2G
2nd – Quinn 2G
3rd – Janecyk 36 saves

GAME #3: HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE The team manager hastily brings the team back to the island to finish off the week. One more home game, this time against the Presidents.

Like the classic “30,000 lbs. of Bananas” by Harry Chapin, this game starts slow and then tumbles downhill to a flaming thundering conclusion.

1st period sees the Moose control the puck with a 17-3 SOG advantage. Minors by Lanz, Ludzik, and Turnbull give the home team 3 PP opportunities and they cash in on the last one, Propp, with 4 minutes left in the period to make it 1-0. No more scoring as the period ends with the Moose up 1.

The Presidents clean up their play in the 2nd and stay out of PK situations. Meanwhile, the Moose juggle their lines to get Quinn some rest, and the move pays off as Maruk, moved to the 1st line, assists for Propp’s 2nd goal of the game with 5 minutes to go. Quickly followed by a rare 4th line goal from Seiling with 3 minutes left, and the period melts away to intermission, only interrupted by a fine fight between Housley and McPhee, and the Moose now up 3-0.

The slow ride downhill stays in control until Pichette finds the back of the net to cut the lead to 2 with 12 minutes to go. One minute later a minor by Engblom puts the Moose on the PK, and Pichette scores again, just as the penalty expires, making it now just a one-goal difference. The Presidents hurt themselves with a minor by Lanz, and just one minute later it’s Kurri cashing in to make it 4-2, now with 6 minutes to go. Things stay in control until the brake lines blow apart as the clock passes 2 minutes too. First MacLean scores close in to put the Moose up 5-2, then its a flaming wreck of Bananas Foster as the Presidents pull the goalie and get goals by Housley, Babych, and Hunter, all in 44 seconds, to tie it at 5. As the crews come in to clean up the mess, the clock expires and we go to OVERTIME.

The Presidents control play early and get 3 shots on goal. The Moose finally stop that mess and take it down where they are able to set up a play for the 3rd line, and Cote converts to pull this one out of the dumpster.

Final – Moose 6, Presidents 5

1st star – Propp 2G 3pts
2nd – Pichette 2G
3rd – Hunter 1G 3 pts

Looks like the old 2 minutes of hell are back for teams with a lead when the opposition pulls their goalie. Expect some wild times. Moose are very lucky to salvage this one for a W.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Moose defense is looking pretty solid, but the offense from last year is missing something. Time to start mixing things up.
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints have three home games this week against Mackinac Island, Ohio and Kamsack.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Quite the home opener for the Saints. The Saints start fast on a McCarthy goal. It’s only 17 seconds into the game. The Moose respond and score 2 in a row. Kurri and Quinn net the goals. The first period is still busy as McCarthy and Kurri exchange goals. It’s 3-2 Moose after one period. Macoun ties it up in the 2nd. We go to the 3rd. Stevens scores to put the Saints up, but Kurri scores a hat trick to tie the game. Neither team scores in OT.

Mackinac Island 4 St. Clair Shores 4

1-Kurri
2-McCarthy
3-Quinn

GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Legends come to L’Anse Creuse. McCarthy scores 2 more goals and the Saints go up 2-0. Kerr breaks the shutout in the 3rd. The Saints nip the Legends. Bernhardt has 48 saves for the Saints.

St. Clair Shores 2 Mackinac Island 1

1-Bernhardt
2-McCarthy
3-Kerr

GAME #3: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS The Cyclones come to St. Clair Shores to do damage, and they do.

All the scoring was in the 2nd period. Howe, Christian, and Perrault all score for Kamsack. Peeters has 27 saves.

Kamsack 3 St. Clair Shores 0

1-Peeters
2-Howe
3-Perrault

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints tie Mackinac Island, defeat Ohio, and lose to Kamsack.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: New season, new face, new results?? Rangers start the season with 3 home games, Charlotte (seeking revenge), Kamsack – the new team on the block, and old rival, Chicago. Seems like the Underground are everybody’s rival.
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The game and season started slowly with the teams testing each other – well actually it was Charlotte doing most of the testing. They came out firing on more than all cylinders and fired 18 shots against Steve Weeks in the opening period. And finally, with just under 3 minutes to go, they scored when LaVallee puts one between the pipes. That apparently was all it took to get the floodgates going.
2nd period opens and Moller makes it 2-0 Charlotte 38 seconds in. Then it’s McNab scoring for CapJack 32 seconds later and Crowder nets a PP goal 7 minutes later and it’s 2-2 midway through the 2nd. Then the Rangers got fiesty and spent some time in the sin bin and Hedberg and LaVallee make the Rangers pay each getting a PP goal. But Haworth responds cutting the Charlotte lead to 4-3, but Poulin nets 1 with a minute left in the 2nd, and the Dynamo skate to the locker room with a 5-3 lead. Whew – 7 goals in period 2.So – can the 3rd-period match that excitement – NO (unless you like defense). Nothing through half the period and then McNab breaks through off a pass from Robertson to score his 2nd goal and draw the Rangers to within 1. But Charlotte is not to be denied and Vaive scores an ice capper with 5 to go making the final 6-4 Charlotte! Rangers tried hard in the 3rd outshooting Charlotte 13-5, but the Dynamo clamped down and Andy Moog got tough!
STARS
1. CHD – LaVallee 2 goals, 1 assist
2. CAP – McNab 2 goals
3. CHD – Vaive 1 goal, 2 assists
GAME #2: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. CAPJACK RANGERS OK – bring on Kamsack, we can whoop up on them! Apparently, the Rangers players did not get that memo. Cyclone skater Gradin opens the scoring at 4:24 slipping one past Resch, but Trottier gets his 1st of the season late in the 1st to tie it up.

2nd period starts out well with Robinson scoring a PP goal 4 minutes in, but then the Rangers left the ice and Kamsack took advantage of what appeared to be 5-on-0 play and score 5 times in the next 10 minutes: Christian, Reinhart, Gartner, Perreault, and Lundholm all score making it 6-2 after 2.

It does get worse, Reinhart scores his 2nd of the game with 3 1/2 to go in the 3rd (yes there was a span of 22 minutes without a Kamsack goal!!). And just so we looked good, Bjugstad scores for CapJack with 15 seconds left in the game. If you were counting, the final came out being 7-3 Cyclones.
STARS (all Cyclones)
1. Reinhart 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Gradin 1 goal, 2 assists
3. Christian 1 goal, 1 assist

GAME #3: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Well, the only thing worse than the results from games 1 and 2 would be to lose a game to Chicago – we never, ever want to do that.

Apparently, Chicago doesn’t want to cooperate and Chabot scores the game’s opening goal 10 minutes into the 1st. And they look to take that 1-0 lead into the locker room, but the Rangers actually work hard at the end of the period and Kromm puts one past Lindbergh 15 seconds before the buzzer to tie the game.

Then the Rangers take charge – that Kromm goal sparked something and Barr scores his 1st for CapJack a minute into the 2nd for a 2-1 lead that is never relinquished. McNab nabs a PP goal 5 minutes later and well then Bossy tries to get Chicago back in it with a PP goal in the final 5 minutes of the period, but the Rangers (and Dion) hang on and skate off with a 3-2 lead after 2.

In the 3rd Sauve gets the Ranger’s 2 PP goal of the game early in the period and Kromm shows he like the last 20 seconds of a period when he scores his 2nd goal of the game – an empty netter – with 19 seconds left and the Rangers finally win a game, 5-2! It’s not that Chicago didn’t try, they fired 57 shots – and 43 of them were on target, but Dion stopped 41 of them! If he stays healthy maybe he’s our guy!
STARS (all Rangers)
1. Kromm 2 goals
2. Dion 41 saves
3. Sauve 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well for a team with repeat trips to the Cup finals, the Rangers start the season poorly going 1-2 at home. Will this be a long season? Should Larry Robinson look for a better home this year? Hmmm, only time will tell (as well as who reads these things).
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Couple of home games to open the season
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Division rival Charlestown comes to town to open the home slate. Patrick gets the Chiefs on the board first, But Taylor (2), Andreychuk, Tucker, and Nilsson score the next 5 for a 5-1 Texas win.

Star 1 – Taylor (Tex) – 2G, 1A
Star 2 – Herron (Tex) – 41 saves
Star 3 – Nilsson (Tex) – 1G, 2A

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Next up is Dallas. Sutter gets things started for Texas, but Broten evens it at 1. Andreychuk and Mullen exchange goals and it is 2-2 after 1. Dallas gets the only 2 goals in the 2nd (Fusco/Anderson) for a 4-2 lead after 2. Andreychuk nets his second of the game and Taylor his 3rd of the year and Herron keeps Dallas off the board and we head to OT tied at 4. A few scoring opportunities both ways in OT, but no goals and we have a 4-4 tie.

Star 1 – Andreychuk (Tex) – 2G, 1A
Star 2 – Sutter (Tex) – 1G
Star 3 – Fusco (Dal) – 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 points out of 4 ain’t bad. Still taking a lot of penalties.
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends begin the 1984-85 season at home, welcoming the Michigan Stags. It is the first of 40 games at Legends Arena this season.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. OHIO LEGENDS MICHIGAN 2, OHIO 1

The 1984-85 home season started off with a BANG between the Stags and Legends. A Moe Lemay gave Ohio an early, 1-0 lead, but it was the SIX first-period fights and a line brawl that set the tone for the evening. In the three fights in the line brawl, Steve Shutt (Mic) and Tim Kerr (Ohio) were both given game misconducts.

In the second period, things calmed down and Eddy Beers (15;23) and Paul Fenton (16:55) netted the last two goals of the game to give Michigan the win.

While all hell broke loose in the first, a coincidental minor in the middle frame was the only blemish on the scoresheet the rest of the way.

Bob Janecyk turned away 36 shots to pick up his first win of the season and Pat Riggin stopped 20 in the losing effort. Each team was blanked on its only power play chance and both squads finished with 46 penalty minutes.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The first game of the season may set the tone in the Adams Division this year.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The building is over for the Dynamo, who in its fourth season finally broke through last year and reached the playoffs for the first time ever where the team gave the formidable CapJack Rangers all they could handle before bowing out in the first round last season. With Glenn Anderson, Andy Moog, and Dale Hawerchuk in their primes, the Dynamo are hopeful to make a deeper championship run this time.
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo, following a win over its CapJack nemesis on the road in the season opener, hosted a Kamsack Cyclones team with some impressive firepower and three solid defensive pairings. As Charlotte took to the ice in front of the Bojangles Arena faithful, it did so with arguably the most curious pick of the past draft in its net. In the second round, the Dynamo, in desperate win-now mode and seeking to solidify its goaltending, reached (some would say wildly) the second round and drafted one-hit wonder Warren Skorodenski, who led the NHL in save percentage in 27 games as a Blackhawks backup to Murray Bannerman – only to never be heard from again after that one brief shining season. The Dynamo wished to lock up Skorodenski, if only as a one-season rental, to complement Moog and provide a dynamic 1-2 goaltending duo.

Charlotte coaches held their breath as Skorodenski took the ice for the first time this season — and after 37 opening seconds on its ice, it seemed like the Dynamo’s grand plans were backfiring as it trailed 1-0. Anton Stastny got things started for Kamsack and struck early in that opening minute off assists from Hall of Famers Mike Gartner and Gilbert Perreault.

But then, Skorodenski justified the Dynamo’s decision to draft him so high. He proceeded to deliver a flawless performance after that wakeup call, finishing with 37 saves, and the Dynamo skaters supported him with four goals, including three individual tallies from its frontline of Anderson, Laurie Boschman, and Hawerchuk for a 4-1 win.

Anderson tied the game seven minutes following Stastny’s goal, and Boschman scored what proved to be the game-winner two minutes into the second. Charlotte defenseman Randy Moller added an insurance goal in the opening minute of the third, followed by a Hawerchuk goal four minutes later that put the game on ice. All goals in the contest were even-handed.

Charlotte only mustered 21 shots compared to Kamsack’s 38 but made them count. Pete Peeters took the loss for Kamsack. The Dynamo prevailed despite sitting Charlie Simmer (30 real goals) to take care of usage right off the bat as a new hockey season kicks off.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1. Boschman 1 goal (the game-winner) and 3 points
2. Hawerchuk 1 G 3 points
3. Skorodenski 37 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Dynamo, known for its notoriously dreadful starts, get an uplifting home opening win with Skorodenski in goal. Along with a draw at Pittsburgh that kicked off the season and the win over CapJack on the road, the Dynamo remains unbeaten after the opening week.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Cross-town rivals meet for Michigan’s season home opener
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Saints defeated the Stags 3-2, despite being outshot 30-21. #1-star Bernie Federko garnered 1G+1A, as did #2-star Tom McCarthy. #3-star Rick Tocchet also put the puck past a shaky Grant Fuhr.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Just a single home contest for Michigan, as they played without Messier, Shutt, and Gare.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago comes to town…every team rival lol
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Chicago Underground
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Drakes come out firing on all cylinders with goals from Inhacak, Barrett, and Sinisalo to give them a 3-0 lead in the first period as the Underground took penalties……but as lopsided as the game was in the first, it was equally as lopsided in the second in favor of Chicago…  Darryl Sutter, Bob Gainey, and Mike Bossy score the goals of the second frame as the teams head to the 2nd intermission tied at 3. Early in the third Jim Peplinski takes a turnover from Jan Virta and beats Pelle Lindbergh up high. The score would stay 4-3 as the Drakes get the home opener.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes take their only game on home ice
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: It’s year 2 for the Mountaineers. Hoping to improve on their first year of play but are realistic in understanding that year 2 is usually more difficult.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Andes welcomes the Maine forest folk led by their Alpha male Wayne Gretzky for the first home game of the evening. The home side gets a leg up in the first period and even though they give up a goal to tie things up at 1 – 1 they manage to score three more over the next two periods while holding Portland scoreless. For at least 1 game we’ll send the home teams home happy.

1st – Smyl
2nd -Millen
3rd – Fox

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS In our 2nd home game, we welcome the Brahmas to town. Somehow their big horns are able to get through the locker room doors, but the officials bar them from being worn while on the ice. When it’s all said and done the Mountaineers take a strong 3rd quarter to win their second home game in a row. Fox has 3 goals and 3 assists. For his efforts, he won a gift certificate for Arbys.

1st – Fox
2nd -Naslund
3rd – Andreychuck

GAME #3: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Our final home game of the week we welcome Charlotte to town. Have to admit we like the colors of their road uni’s. That’s about the only good thing we can say about them. The Dynamo put 5 past Millen in an easy 5 – 1 win.

1st – Moog
2nd -Hawerchuk
3rd – Poulin

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Our first week finds the home side going 2 and 1. That’s 2 more wins than we were expecting.
Hyannisport Presidents
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS The Presidents host the Ducks in Hyannisport’s home opener. The Ducks score first but the home team responds with 3 straight goals. Richard Sevigny is sharp for the Presidents making 39 saves. FINAL SCORE HYP 5 – NCD 2
GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. HYANNISPORT PRESIDENTS The Drakes wax the Presidents in this one despite getting outshot 37-17. Joe Mullen has 2 goals and 2 assists while Roberto Romano notches the shutout. FINAL SCORE DD 5 – HYP 0
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Coach Sean and Hyannisport go 1-1 in their first two home games.
