GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS NCD 6 CAP 2 Ducks with an upset win and they do it in dominating fashion. CAP came back late in the second on a shorthanded goal by Bjugstad and a power play goal by McNab. Then came the turning point of the game – CAP’s Doug Wickenheiser was pulled down from behind (by McCrimmon) on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Beezer stopped him cold and the score remained 3-2 Ducks. Not only that 26 seconds after the penalty shot – and with only 15 seconds left in the period – Mark Napier scored for the Ducks to make it 4-2. Middleton and Potvin added third-period goals, VBK made 35 saves and the Ducks came away with a big win.

Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games for the ultra-confusing Spirit.
GAME #1:

NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

Larmer nets two (15, 16), and Smail (15) and Neufeld (9) help the Spirit to a 4-3 win!
GAME #2:

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

 VS.  PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

Goulet (30), Rogers (21), Payne (8), and Ashton (10) outscore Gretzky and company 4-3!!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two home wins… and if things go as they have this season, we’ll have two road losses to go along with them.

Looking at the standings, though the playoffs don’t look good for a last-place team, I have faith that this team will live up to its potential and start winning on the road. We are tweaking our COA file again for week 13.

Never give up, never surrender…

Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Dynamo have four games all in its Bojangles Arena this week, and fans and management are hoping this generous home stand can help it solidify its playoff position. Entering the week, Charlotte climbed to second place in the Patrick and if the season ended today, it would have the #3 seed for its second straight playoff appearance. Still, a ton of runway but the team has gelled lately, winning five of its last seven. Disclaimer: with four writeups there may be more brevity than normal.
GAME #1:

CAPJACK RANGERS

VS.

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO

For this write-up, I’ll cite two memorable do-overs in the mid-80s since we’re smack in the middle of that decade. On the positive side: in television, there was the “Dream” season (I for one was a fan of Dallas and it was surreal to find out JR’s brother Bobby never died after all). Then on the not-so-positive side for this Yankees fan. There was the pine tar game, where George Brett’s home run counted, then didn’t, then the American League office proclaimed it was valid, (the rule in the book about pine tar be damned!) and they would have to pick it up from that point later.

Why am I bringing all this up? Well, this dope played too far ahead last week, into January 10, and reported a win over CapJack. Definitely need to strike from the record and replay.

The goalie did not change for Charlotte in the rematch (the Buzzards went again with Warren Skorodenski). It was an inauspicious start for Skorodenski who just 62 seconds in let in a Peter McNab goal with assists from Dave Barr and Scott Arniel. Charlotte’s Dale Hawerchuk (second star) tied it six minutes later and the score remained 1-1 halfway through the second when the turning point occurred: CapJack, on the powerplay, surrendered a shorthanded goal to Charlotte defenseman Mats Thelin putting the Dynamo ahead 2-1 and from there the floodgates opened.

Even strength goals from Paul Gillis and Rick Vaive later in the second plus an early third-period goal from Glenn Anderson (first star) nailed down a 5-1 Dynamo win. Skorodenski (third star) had 25 saves as he shut out CapJack for nearly the final 59 minutes).

GAME #2:

CHICAGO UNDERGROUND

VS.

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO

The Underground visited Charlotte in what proved to be a wacky, weird, and wild game, especially in the beginning and the end. The Dynamo grabbed the 1-0 lead four minutes in on a Rick Vaive goal (he had 17 entering the week), and following a penalty by Charlotte’s Laurie Boschman shortly thereafter, Chicago went on the power play, but the Dynamo picked up from the previous win and got another shorthanded goal from Dave Poulin to put Charlotte ahead 2-0 at the 7:28 mark.

No lead is ever safe though against a Mike Bossy team and Bossy’s goal just 30 seconds later narrowed the Chicago deficit to 2-1. From there however, the Dynamo chased Underground goalie Pelle Lindbergh with goals from Vaive, Hawerchuk, and Poulin in the second part of the first period to give the Dynamo the lead 5-1 entering just the first intermission. Lindbergh, replaced by Bob Froese, saved just four shots and let in five.

Lanny McDonald added a goal for Charlotte in the second period to put the Dynamo ahead 6-1. In the third, the Dynamo clearly went into a defensive shell, and in a statistic never seen before, Chicago outshot Charlotte 18-0, but found the net just once on a goal from Pierre Mondou with 8:04 to play. The shot totals for the game were skewed as a result (38-15 in favor of Chicago). But make no mistake, the Dynamo dominated this one, winning 6-2.

Poulin and Vaive were first and second stars respectively with two goals apiece and Andy Moog got third-star honors with 36 saves.

GAME #3:

PORTLAND SASQUATCH

VS.

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO

The Sasquatch led by the Great One (though rumors have it that Wayne Gretzky may be on the trading block) visited the Dynamo next. The game marked Dynamo second-liner Charlie Simmer finally joining the 1984-85 season. In this 40th game halfway mark, Simmer entered the contest with a mere six goals (he had scored 34 during the real 1984-85 campaign). In this contest, Simmer had a goal 1:07 into the first period and then added a goal in the 9:18 mark of the second period, both even strength in pacing Charlotte to a 3-0 lead.

McDonald added a goal one minute following Simmer’s second goal to give Charlotte a comfortable 4-0 lead halfway through the contest and Hawerchuk added a power-play goal with 53 seconds remaining to give the Dynamo a 5-0 win.

Simmer only captured second-star honors as Skorodenski returned to the nets and shined again for Charlotte, recording 28 saves for the shutout. Gretzky was neutralized – just one shot for the game (Mike Foligno for Portland by contrast had six) and he served a rare five penalty minutes for fighting.
Poulin was the third star for Charlotte: his goal just 2:47 into the game against a shaky Portland goalie Reggie Lemelin gave the Dynamo a lightning-quick 2-0 advantage; it was sandwiched between the two Simmer goals. Lemelin finished with 15 saves.

GAME #4:

NEW CASTLE DUCKS

VS.

CHARLOTTE DYNAMO

Fresh off its shutout of Portland, Charlotte alternated goalies against New Castle and this time started Moog, but the results were the same. Moog was the story of this game, saving 24 and shutting out the Ducks 4-0.

Hawerchuk struck early, 54 seconds into the contest, with his 26th goal of the season past Billy Smith. Exactly 15 minutes later Charlotte got offense from its fourth-line center, Paul Gillis who found the net on an assist from right winger Louis Sleigher. Simmer and Boschman added even-strength goals in the second period to close the scoring.

Again, Charlotte went into a third-period shell and fired zero shots while New Castle managed 12 shots in the third against Moog, the first star, who saved them all. Hawerchuk and Boschman were second and third stars respectively.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Speaking of aforementioned dream scenarios (Bobby Ewing in the dream on Dallas had actually died in 1984-85, the season we’re currently in), Charlotte has an incredible week it never could have imagined – clearly the best in team history. It wins all four of its games in regulation with the last two coming on shutouts. In the process, it outscores its opponents 20-3. This team is clearly firing on all cylinders. The strategy was to unleash its top lineups during these four home games and make a beeline toward solidifying its playoff positioning and the strategy paid off (for a change!). The road ahead may be difficult i.e. time to start addressing some usage and rest a couple of players – but after this week, this team can proclaim itself a championship contender, capable of competing with the best.

And for the record (if you’ve read this far), replaying that pine tar game was total baloney but it was worth it seeing George Brett of the hated Royals go absolutely ballistic!

Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home contests for the struggling Stags
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Tied at 3 halfway through the third period, Jari Kurri puts the Moose into the lead. Frycer and Propp add ENGs, and then Greg Gilbert adds insult to injury, as Mackinac Island takes a 7-3 victory.
GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags held a 2-1 lead after one period thanks to a pair from Bobby Carpenter. But the Chiefs got the next three before Johnny O drew Michigan within one at 18:40 of the third, and the home team could not get the equalizer and fall 4-3.
GAME #3: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. MICHIGAN STAGS When Mark Messier scored at 17:46 of the third period, Michigan led 3-1 and appeared a sure bet to get 2 points on the Cyclones. WRONG! Mike Gartner scored at 19:22 and again 31 seconds later, to send the teams to OT where Cam Neely won it for Kamsack before a stunned crowd at Cobo Arena.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 games and 3 losses as the long season continues

Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A busy week for the Mountaineers as they hosted 3 teams.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Game 1 is against Patrick member of the Spirit. While they’re under .500 currently they’ve outscored their opponents for the season. Even though the home squad outshoots their visitors, the away squad outscores them 4 – 2.

1st Star -Larouche
2nd Star – Davis
3rd Star – Hrudey

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Two days later it will be the Adams and league-leading Moose coming to town. It’s SRO in the Mountaineers arena. A nice back-and-forth game between the two sides. The home squad goes up 3 – 2 and is on the verge of an upset when Frycer gets his 12th of the season to send it to OT. In OT the visitors leave with a 4 – 3 win after Kurri nets his 34th of the season. Wow. That’s a pretty potent offensive player.

1st Star – Kuri
2nd Star – MacLean
3rd Star – Frycer

GAME #3: DALLAS DRAKES VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Our final visiting team for the week is the Norris leading Drakes. Their conference is a toss-up still but they’re on top right now and not to be overlooked. This time it’s Andes who fights back to send things to OT but unfortunately as was the case in the previous home game we lose in OT.

1st – Anderson
2nd – Naslund
3rd – Smyl

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Mountaineers played well in their 3 home games this week but they go 0 – 3 in the end.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Kamsack and Texas visit
GAME #1: KAMSACK CYCLONES VS. DALLAS DRAKES Mike Gartner puts the Cyclones up on a great tic-tac-toe play from Mark Howe and Gilbert Perreault. 4 minutes later Joey Mullen evens things up for the Drakes and the score stays knotted at 1 after the first period. Tomas Gradin puts the Cyclones up early in the second but Patrick Sundstrom scores at the 19:59 mark to tie it going into the third period. An even up and down 3rd comes to a climax when Perreault beats Hanlon on the power play to give the Cyclones the 3-2 victory.
GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Mullen scores the only goal of the first period for the Drakes. Keith Acton scores for the Brahmas with the only goal of the second period. John Tucker puts the Brahmas up early in the third but the Drakes storm back with 3 unanswered goals, the last into an empty net….4-2 Drakes.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Splitsville
