Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: Two games …
Mackinac Island Moose @Saskatoon Cyclone MACK wins 2-0
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Saskatoon Cyclone Sask wins 6-4 … yeehaw.
Weekly Summary: I laughed, I cried … it became a part of me.

Quebec City Le Blue
Weekly Summary: Quebec City goes 0-2-1 at home against three crummy teams. Disappointing.

Silk City Whales
Weekly Preview: You can’t win if you can’t score. Silk City and their league-worst 2.38 goals per game host first place St. Croix Falls and division rival Charlestown this week.
Saint Croix Falls Lumberjacks @ Silk City Whales Lumberjacks score first three goals and put away Whales 4-2.

1st Star -Billy Smith,SCF – 48 saves
2nd Star -Rene Robert, SCF – goal and assist
3rd Star -Steve Patne, SCF

Charlestown Chiefs @ Silk City Whales Chiefs break open tie game in the third period, scoring three answered to beat hapless Whales 5-2. Yet another opposition goalie voted 1st star by the local media

1st Star – Pat Riggin, CHA: 50 saves
2nd Star – Warren Miller, CHA – goal and assist
3rd Goal -Lanny McDonald, CHA

Weekly Summary: Whales continue to struggle offensively and lose both home games this week. The defense and goaltending ain’t been so hot either.

Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: Three home games for the red hot Spirit!
Biloxi Blades @ Pittsburgh Spirit The Biloxi Blades visit the Burgh. Davidson stones Pittsburgh for two periods while they get goals from Maloney and Chipperfield to make it 2-0 going into the 3rd.

LaFleur takes over and pots two goals 1:31 apart to tie the game. That is where we leave it. Tied 2-2.

Mackinac Island Moose @ Pittsburgh Spirit Mackinac Island strolls into town. They score 3 (O’Connell, Lysiak, Sheppard) in the 1st period to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Hedberg scores a shortie on a deke to make it 3-1.

2nd period Greschner pulls Pittsburgh within one make it 3-2.

Mackinac gets it back to make it 4-2.

Chouinard pots his 11th to cut the lead back to one, 4-3.

Head into the 3rd. Labraaten (10) ties it up 4-4 with 6:29 left to play.

Looks like we are headed to OT until Chouinard steals the puck in the neutral zone, fires a pass to Hedberg for a 2 on 1. Hedberg over to Vickers… HE SCORES!!! With 8 seconds left, Vickers makes it 5-4. That score stands and PIT completes an amazing comeback win!

Saskatoon Cyclone @ Pittsburgh Spirit This is probably THE MOST frustrating game I have ever player.

Pittsburgh outshoots Saskatoon 38-16
Pittsburgh with more scoring chances 30-13

Final score 5-4 Saskatoon wins. How? A young kid named Wayne Gretzky had a hat trick on top of goals from Taylor and Currie for the improbably 5-4 win.

Baker did NOT have his best night. I think this Gretzky kid is someone to look out for. 😉

Weekly Summary: A win, a loss, and a tie. Meh. Still 3rd in Defense (3.35 Goals Against Per Game) and 4th in Offense (4.10 Goals Per Game) all while on the heels of San Diego for the Division Lead.

Things still look bright in the Steel City.

Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: One home game this week for the Mackinac Island Moose, on the north end of Lake Michigan, (9-14-5) against the team from the southern end of Lake Michigan, the Chicago Underground (12-15-1). Chicago has the powerful scoring line of Bossy, McNab and Mondou with a combined 126 points.
Chicago Underground @ Mackinac Island Moose The Moose dominate the 1st period with SOG 23-3 and as you would expect, goals, scoring 2 to none for the visitors. Lever and Dunlop with the tallies to send the game 2-0 to intermission. In the second, Chicago shows up and holds Mackinac scoreless while erasing the goose-egg from the scoreboard on a powerplay goal by McNab with a deflection. and the game goes to the 3rd 2-1 home. In the 3rd more even play from both sides and as the Moose try to take the upper hand on another powerplay, the Underground turn the tables and tally a shortie by Forster to tie it at 2. The Moose thwart a couple rushes by Chicago and as the clock looks to run out the Moose squeak out one more, 2nd of the game by Lever, and then hold off the visitors to preserve a 3-2 win.
1st star – Lever 2g
2nd star – Dunlop 1g
3rd star – Lysiak 2a
Weekly Summary: The Moose win their one home game of the week.

Top performer is Lever with 2 goals.
For Chicago, in spite of the loss, Peeters with 51 saves, allowing 3 goals, still has a .944 save %

Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: Just one home game this week vs. San Diego.
San Diego Mariners @ Charlestown Chiefs I think the Chiefs have a common law marriage with their sister at this point, since they kiss her every week.

A Chiefs goal with 23 seconds remaining ties it up at 3-3.

CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers host two games – their high scoring has been tempered somewhat lately, but their defense has also been stopping more and more shots.
Chicago Underground @ CapJack Rangers Underground trying to dig into the Rangers record – they’re not too different – but the Rangers prevail in a close fought, low scoring 2-1 game. Shots the same, Hits, blocks, shot attempts all very close, but the Rangers dominated in face-offs won and Scoring chances. But it was still down to 1 goal. Rangers scored in the opening minutes in both the 1st and 3rd periods – while Chicago tallied late in the 2nd.
STARS (all CAP)
1. Robinson 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Trottier 1 goal, 1 assist (and 21 faceoffs won)
3. Bouchard 31 savesMattsson notablve with 30 saves Hill scored the lone Chicago tally (his 1st).
Silk City Whales @ CapJack Rangers Everyone beats the Whales! They’ve given up almost twice as many as they’ve scored. Everyone beats the Whales. Well, not everyone. But at least we didn’t lose.
Rangers and Whales skate to a 2-2 tie. Trottier gets the 1st goal late in the 1st. Then Silk City gets 2 in the 2nd – Sutter (9) two minutes in to tie it and then with Trottier in the box, Brown (2) gets a PP goal with 22 seconds left n the 2nd.
Rangers pour it on in the 3rd, out shooting the Whales 15-4 but only getting 1 past Lessard – Trottier again – to tie the game.
STARS
1. (CAP) Trottier – 2 goals (and a notable 17 faceoofs won)
2. (SCW) Brown – 1 goal
3. (SCW) Sutter – 1 goal
Weekly Summary: So 3 out of 4 points – eh, not bad. Beating Chicago 2-1 and tying Silk City 2-2. Need to get the goal shooting back.

Biloxi Blades
Weekly Preview: Tough week for the Blades who have been skating over their heads of late. This bring them back to frozen earth.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Biloxi Blades Closely contested but a 3rd period power play goal seals win for visitors Chiefs 3 Blades 2
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Biloxi Blades Okay, this one stings a little more than others. Mike Rogers and Jean Pronovost 3rd period goals tie things for the Blades but a Picard PP goal with 40 seconds left in the game erases all the excitement for the home folks. Syracuse 4 Biloxi 3
Weekly Summary: 2 Losses for the Blades.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: Back to back nights in Brooklyn for the Rats, first Chicago then division rival Capjack
Chicago Underground @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Chicago had comeback to even the score 3 different times before Peter McNab’s second goal of the game, just :28 seconds into the 3rd, gave the visitors their first lead of the night. But the Harbor Rats would tie the score and grab the lead back before Bob Dailey’s blast from the point evened the score for the 5th time in this wild shootout. Just :30 seconds later Bobby Smith beat Pete Peeters for Brooklyn’s 7th goal and a 7-6 Harbor Rats win.
CapJack Rangers @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats The visitors come storming out and grab a 3-0 lead early. But the Harbor Rats complete the comeback to even the score on Pete Mahovlich’s second goal of the game late in the 2nd period. The Rangers promptly put 3 more goals up on the board to pull away. Brian Trottier had a 1-4-5 night for Capjack in their 6-4 road win.
Weekly Summary: tough split, would rather the win against those Rangers.

Vermont Foresters @ San Diego Mariners San Diego holds on 5-4
Weekly Summary: Another .500 week at home 1-1

Vermont Foresters
Weekly Preview: Vermont looks to better their hot start and try and not kiss their sister again against a couple of 2nd place teams
St. Clair Shores Saints @ Vermont Foresters the saints visit the ice cream bowl looking to upset the hot foresters and their start melts ben and jerrys early on with 2 goals in the first 7 minutes with henderson netting his 1st and then wayne babych his 10th in a dominating 1st period. vermont turns things around in the second outshooting st clair 23 to 3 to turn things around and still trail 2-0 thanks to the stellar goaltending of mike liut. (on a sidenote, growing up in chicago as a blackhawks fan this game reminded me how much i hated liut) the 3rd period saw dennis kearns score his 1st on the powerplay near the halfway point but goalscoring machine bob kelly nets a pp goal for the saints to get the final score of 3-1 saints. mike liut is named the games 1st, 2nd and 3rd star after stopping 46 of 47 foresters shots.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Vermont Foresters vermont looks to turn things around against the pittsburgh spirit. an active 1st period with 27 sog ends with vermont holding a 1-0 lead on mike folignos 18th goal late in the stanza. vermonts focus on stopping lafleur from scoring shows with tight checking from craig ramsey but linemate darryl sittler tallies to even the score in the middle of the 2nd. morris lukowich puts the home team back on top with a late powerplay goal to end the 2nd period 2-1 foresters. the 3rd period sees the wheels fall off for vermont who despite outshooting the spirit 15-7 give up 3 goals to lose 4-2. sittler ends up with 2 goals and chico resch makes 38 saves outduelling mike veisor.
Weekly Summary: good news, no ties this week…bad news, no wins at home either for a disappointing week in vermont
