Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: Two teams with nowhere to go meet up to swap recipes.
Silk City Whales @ Saskatoon Cyclone Nowhere to go doesn’t mean not giving a crap apparently as the two teams spent much of the game beating the crap out of each other while Wayne Gretzky skated through them.
The game featured wave after wave of Saskatoon Cyclone players screaming down on Whales’ keeper Bob Sauve, but it was like the surf pummelling the rocks at Peggy’s Cove.
Saskatoon outshot the Whales 22-3 in the 1st period, but it was only the luckiest guy in the universe (Pat Hughes) that could find the twine. With Dave Taylor and Marc Tardif pretty much done for the season, Hughes was the lucky bastard promoted to play right wing alongside the great one. He continued to reap, one-timing a pass from Gretzky through the slot and past Sauve just over two minutes into the game. Hughes was doing his darnedest to earn a spot on the 1991 Cyclone team which will have four potential 50-goal scorers.
It looked like it would be a long day for the St. Croix squad, but Sauve kept them in the game and then some.
Silk City responded in appreciation to Sauve’s performance by getting the only goal of the period when Barry Beck connected on a tic-tac-toe passing play with Harris and Fitchner to blast one from the point high and over the shoulder of Rogatien Vachon.
The game-breaker came pretty early in the 3rd period when one of the patched-together Saskatoon lines that found itself with Gretzky at centre stole the puck in the Whales’ end and finished with the Great One slapping a low shot under the pads of the Silk City keeper to make it 2-1.
That was how it ended as Silk City could not muster any sort of offense in the 3rd period and were outshot 14-8 but with all the shots coming from outside.
An entertaining game with a few smackdowns including Ian Turnbull flattening Darcy Rota and Jerry Korab getting bitch-slapped by Dave Maloney during a mid-3rd period intermission.
Stars:
1. SAS, Gretzky (1 G, 1 A)
2. SAS, P.Hughes (1 G)
3. SCW, B. Sauve (41 saves)
Weekly Summary: Another game … another two points by Gretzky and the rest of the Cyclone just pretty much voyeurs. Two points is always nice, but … meh … good game.

Weekly Preview: The Moose host division leading foe Saint Croix Falls.
Saint Croix Falls Lumberjacks @ Mackinac Island Moose Saint Croix Falls 4, Mackinac Island 2 – Saint Croix comes out aggressively with an early penalty followed up by a Robert shortie for the early lead. Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: Home game of a home and away against division rival CapJack!
CapJack Rangers @ Pittsburgh Spirit It was apparent from the start that there is no lost love between these two franchises.

1st Period
High flying, but CapJack comes away with a 1-0 lead as Gare scores his 63rd.

2nd Period
Ice tilts more the other way but it’s still an even contest as Shutt (56) makes it 2-0. Sittler (34) and and underachieving Lafleur (32) cut the CapJack lead to 3-2 to close out the period.

3rd Period
Total domination by Pittsburgh, but they only manage to get 2 from Huber (12) and Lafleur (33) as CapJack gets another from Gare (64) to end this game in a 4-4 tie.

Stats alone, Pittsburgh dominated the game outshooting CAP 43-24. CapJack made it count when it mattered going 3-6 on the PP while PIT only managed 1 PPG on 6 attempts.

A great game and a hard fought season by these two teams.

Silk City Whales
Weekly Preview: Silk City welcomes the Great One and the Cyclones into the Blowhole this week.
Saskatoon Cyclone @ Silk City Whales Gretzky doesn’t disappoint with two first period goals as the Cyclone roll to a 5-1 win over the Whales. The highlight for the Whales came in a second period fight between Saskatoon’s Rick Vaive and Perry Turnbull. Apparently, someone from the Saskatoon media was heard referring to Turnbull as Ian Turnbull, and Perry Turnbull took it out on Vaive. “WHAT’S….MY….NAME” came with each punch raining down on Vaive.

1st Star – Wayne Gretzky, SAS – 2G, A

2nd Star – Bill McKenzie, SAS – 39 saves

3rd Star – Brent Ashton, SAS – G, A

Weekly Summary: The good people in the state of Connecticut can’t wait for this season to end. The bad ones can’t either.

CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: 2 games this series, road game to Pittsburgh and home game with Pittsburgh with ever so slim chances of catching the Spirit it will be fun to play them twice – although the road game ended in a tie, we will still work hard here.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ CapJack Rangers In a game that appeared to be fought with defense in mind – 48 Pittsburgh shot attempts (33 on goal) and 40 CapJack shot attempts (19 on goal), you would think it would be low scoring. BUT NO!
Rangers want this one and they pounce on Resch quickly and often scoring 4 times in the opening period. 1:19 into the game and Esposito makes it 1-0. Then Trottier gets into the scoring – but not the way the Rangers wanted. He goes off for 2 minutes and Sittler nabs his 34th goal (PP) to even it up. But then Gare, Douglas and Schutt score in 5 minute span to make it 4-1 at the end of 1.Spirit won’t sit around useless, in the 2nd they close the gap to 4-3 on Tkaczuk SH goal and then Houle scores midway through the period and we go to the 3rd with GAME ON!Trottier scores early (2:44) and then sets up Shutt 3 minutes later to make it 6-3 Rangers and home crowd is in a frenzy. But late in the game, the crowd is silenced when Labraaten gets one form Houle and Edberg to make it 6-4 and a minute later (16:22) Lafluer puts one past the pipes to make it 6-5. Spirit yank Resch for the final minute and laFLURRY really starts – but the CapJack defense and a battered Smith hold on and take the game 6-5. Spirit really dominated the 3rd period outshooting the Rangers 14-5 – but percentage wise the Rangers hit on 40% of those shots and it carried them.STARS – for a win, it’s interesting that 2 of the Stars came from the losing team.
1. CAP – Trottier 1 goal, 2 assists
2. PIT – Laflure 1 goal, 1 assist
3. PIT – Houle 1 goal, 1 assist
Weekly Summary: So, in what was probably too little too late, but a great effort anyway, the Rangers pulled of the victory against the Spirit and hope to see them again in the post season

Biloxi Blades
Weekly Preview: Two points separate these two clubs in playoff race., the Saints holding the slim lead. Lots will be decided by this match
St. Clair Shores Saints @ Biloxi Blades Game not about the team high scorers, Bordeleau gets #6 for Saints to kick things off, the Jude Drouin’s 4th, a shorthanded goal ties it after one period. Lindstrom #16 with 8 seconds remaining in the 2nd for the Blades makes it 2-1 after two. In the third, Robbie Ftorek ties it 6 minutes in and that is all she wrote. Game ends up tied, 2-2 so turns out nothing was decided, other than these teams evenly matched.
Weekly Summary: Blades and Saints remain close in standings as the season drags on.
