CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Rangers host the Legends and the Brahmas this week as they look to stay way ahead of the surging Dynamos…
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS The Rangers enjoyed only their 3rd shutout of the season (2nd for Resch) as he stops 32 shots from the Legends – looking young and chipper for a spry 35-year-old. The 1st period wasn’t so bad, only 7 shots to thwart but then he turned back 13 in the 2nd and stone-cold them 12 times in the final period. And that was important as the 3rd period opened, the Rangers held just a slim 1-0 margin. Mike Liut was doing a pretty good job himself, although he only faced 13 shots for the 1st two periods.

Arniel got the only goal in the 2nd and then DeBlois scored early on in the 3rd to make it 2-0. Then Petterson scored on the Ranger’s 5th PP opportunity near the 3rd-period midpoint and that put the game at 3-0 and the Legends just couldn’t get anything in the Rangers goal. Final 3-0!

STARS (all CAP)
1. Resch – 32 saves
2. Petterson 1 goal, 1 assist
3. DeBlois 1 goal

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Rangers come out hot in this firing 16 shots on Herron in the 1st, but only an early shot from DeBlois gets past him. And then Cyr matches that at the midway mark and the first period ends 1-1.

2nd period the Rangers again come out hot firing another 15 shots at Herron and this time they get an even-strength, PP, and SH goal to take a 4-1 lead after 2 periods. Beck gets the even-strength goal, Robinson the PP, and Silk the SHander.

In the 3rd, the Rangers clamp down trying to hold the lead and they only fire 4 at Herron (and he stops them all. But Taylor gets one by Weeks with just over 9 minutes to go. But that clamping by the Rangers works the rest of the way and the final is 4-2 CapJack!

STARS (all CAP)
1. Robinson 1 goal, 1 assist
2. DeBlois 1 goal
3. Silk 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Rangers are home for 2 and pick up 4 points, keep it up, guys!
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Riding a three-game home winning streak, the Stags play host to Charlotte and Syracuse.e
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MICHIGAN STAGS John Ogrodnick remained red-hot, scoring the hat trick, plus picking up a helper, as Michigan defeats the Dynamo 7-4. Butch Goring chipped in with a pair, and Mark Messier had 1 G+2A.
GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Boldirev and Neely. But Michigan scored the next 5, including 2 more from Ogrodnick, and the Stags with an impressive 5-3 win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: John Ogrodnick continues his unbelievable scoring streak; he now has 28 goals and 52 points in 30 GP! The Stags have now won 6 of their last 7 home contests and have finally reached the .500 mark.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games for the Ducks this week as they continue to battle with multiple teams for a playoff spot in the Prince of Wales Conference. Visiting The Duck Pond this week are Smythe Division leader Portland and the Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Can the Ducks shut down the Great One a/k/a Wayne Gretzky. No, as Gretzky scores two goals but that’s all the scoring for Portland. The Ducks score 4 and come away with a 4-2 win. After a scoreless first period, Gretzky put POR ahead 1-0 in the second but NCD tied it on a Mark Osborne goal. Ryan Walter and Tony Currie followed with goals against Doug Soetart and the Ducks led 3-1 going to the third. Gretzky made it 3-2 at 10:57 but Rick Middleton got a huge insurance goal at 18:26 to make the final 4-2. It was Middleton’s 30th goal of the year. Gretzky now has a league-leading 44 goals.

GAME #2: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS The Ducks thoroughly outplayed the Harbor Rats, with a 44-19 SOG advantage and a 5+ minute TOA advantage. Yet it was the Harbor Rats who were leading in this one 4-3 down to the final seconds – Barry Pederson, the Ducks star center, scored with FOURTEEN SECONDS to go in the third period to tie the game. For Pederson it was the HAT TRICK and his 21st goal of the season. The game went to OT where the teams managed only a combined three shots on goal as the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Pederson got things going for the Ducks in the first, scoring at 7:46. Then with 6 seconds left in the first period, Bobby Clarke scored a SHORTHANDED goal on a breakaway to make it 2-0. That looked like a back-breaking goal as far as Brooklyn was concerned as the teams went to the locker room with the Rats having been outshot 16-5 and outscored 2-0. Greg Stefan was playing great goal however so…
In the second period, the Rats made the most of a very few shots (7 SOG in the period) as Mark Johnson (23) and Mike Gartner (12) put the puck past Dan Bouchard, to tie the score at 2-2. Pederson’s second of the game made it 3-2, still in the second period. And still in the period…Darryl Sutter scored (8) for Brooklyn to tie it and Bobby Smith (14)put Brooklyn ahead at 16:21. FOUR GOALS on SEVEN SOG for Brooklyn as Bouchard looked shaky.
The third period was again dominated by the Ducks, as they had a 13-6 SOG advantage but they could not get the tying goal against Stefan. Finally, with the Ducks net empty and on their final rush of regulation, Pederson took a pass from Middleton and SCOOOOORRREEEED to tie the game at 19:46.

Pederson, in addition to his hat trick, won 15 of 23 faceoffs as NCD won an incredible 63.6% in the game.
Greg Stefan made 40 saves for Brooklyn

THREE STARS:
1-NCD Pederson 3G HAT TRICK
2- BRO Gartner 1G 1 A 2 PTS
3- NCD Clarke 1G SHORTHANDED

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks get 3 of a possible 4 points and were lucky to get the third point against Greg Stefan and the Harbor Rats. The Ducks are in the thick of the playoff race, as they await the results of this week’s road games against Andes and St Clair Shores
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlestown and Brooklyn come to northern Michigan for hockey.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Pretty even shots in the 1st. The Moose with a bunch of average shots, and none get through. Brooklyn was in the same situation until late. A Price penalty opens the door for Christian with a PP goal just under 5 minutes to go. Then the Moose on the PP look to even it up, get sloppy, and Housley takes the bobble down the rink for a shortie. Brooklyn 2-0 at the first break.

Rogers cuts the lead to 1 in the first minutes of the 2nd period. Berglund answers right away to make it 3-1. 5 minutes later Terrion cuts the lead to 1. After that, it’s all Rodent Power as Brooklyn adds 4 more goals with Smith, Housley when it counted, and Sutter, Stastny a couple of empty netters late. Quinn with a PP goal for the Moose early in the 3rd.

Final Brooklyn 7, Moose 3

1st star – Housley 2G 3pts
2nd – Stastny 1G 3pts
3rd Sutter 1G 2pts

GAME #2 – VISITING TEAM: Charlestown Chiefs
GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Good even play in the 1st. Both teams killed off one minor. Propp scores the only goal of the period late and gives the Moose a 1-0 lead at the break.

A Price penalty opens the door for a PP goal by Krushelnyski 8 minutes in. MacLean responds at the midpoint to get the lead back. The Chiefs then kill off 2 minors. Mac Lean gets himself a PP goal late. As the Moose look to take the 2 goal lead to break, the Chiefs say not so fast, and goals by Smith and Krushelnyski tie the game at 3. Intermission.

MacLean completes the hat-trick 6 minutes in to make it 4-3 Moose. O’Regan and Shedden then score 2 minutes apart to flip the lead, and it’s now 5-4 Charlestown. Moose keep it together and avoid panic city. A goal by Beers just under 7 minutes to go ties it up. MacLean with his 4th of the game with just over 3 minutes to go flips the lead back to the Moose, who then survive the pulled goalie barrage and survive.

Final Moose 6, Charlestown 5

1st star – MacLean with the Hat-trick plus
2nd – Krushelnyski 2G
3rd = Beers 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well, that’s a lot of goals ……….. 21 in 2 games. Moose bounce back from a drubbing by Brooklyn to squeak one out against Charlestown.

Congrats to MacLean on his big 4 goal game.

Hoffmeyer, Taylor, and McCourt score to give the Brahmas a 5-0 lead before Hakanson gets Chicago on the board to end the 5-1 Texas. Chicago shows some life in the 3rd on goals by Holmgren and Savard to cut it to 5-3. Acton restores the 3 goal lead but is answered by Stastny. Down 2, Chicago pulls the goalie, and Hughes scores into the EN for a 7-4 Texas win.

Star #2 – Carpenter 1 goal
Star #3 – Hamel 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Michigan pulls off a thrilling upset win on the road
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: More of the same… most likely.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Andes comes to town and must have been jet-lagged or something because the Spirit manage to win a game!? 4-2 Spirit win! All 128 people in attendance got a free hot dog and a beer… then when they realized they had 16,000 hot dogs left, and didn’t even put a dent into the beer, they decided to make it all you can eat and drink… I don’t remember what happened after that.
GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Dallas makes things feel right again as they beat the Spirit in OT 4-3. Whatever hot dogs were left, were given out at the door… both coming and going.
GAME #3: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT These Moose (why not Meese?) of the Isle of Mackinac beat the Spirit easily 5-2. 3-5 day old hot dogs were washed down with stale beer. The American Way…
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Can these hot dogs last the rest of the season?
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The secret is out of the bag: the Charlotte Dynamo, shackled by an abysmal start to the season, have underachieved this year with a 16-20-5 record coming into the week. Playoffs are a longshot entering the second half and not even considered part of the calculus unless baseline a .500 record during this regular season can be attained (and that’s a big if). There were three road games to be played this week and a lone home contest against Andes.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo continue playing solid hockey dating back to the beginning of December, evidenced by its 3-1 win over Andes on January 23. In a downright chippy game with 17 penalties on both sides (the majority of those were for fighting and roughing where both teams played at even strength), Charlotte was able to capitalize on the power play, going two of three on its chances. Charlotte also outshot the Mountaineers, 33-25. Alan Bester, who is emerging as Charlotte’s top goalie, delivered another superb performance, saving 24 and shutting out Andes for the first two periods before a Michel Goulet goal eluded him 2:27 into the third period.

Goals by Charlotte right-wingers Glenn Anderson and Anders Hedberg put the Dynamos ahead 2-0 11 minutes into the contest, followed by a lengthy lull in scoring by both sides that extended through the second period. Following Goulet’s goal early in the third, the game remained tight until Charlotte’s Laurie Boschman delivered a knockout power play goal 17:32 into the period.

Al Jensen was the hard luck losing goalie, keeping his team in the game with 30 saves and surrendering just one even strength goal.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
Star 1: Anderson 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 2: Bester, 24 saves
Star 3: Hedberg, 1 G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Dynamo win this game at home and assure itself of a .500 week with a 1-1 record on the road, with the results of another away contest pending.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes hosts Newcastle and Cap Jack this week 13 of the MWOTHL
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Newcastle puts 4 in the nets to beat the Mountaineers by 2
GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Rangers are the Mountaineers opponents for the final home game of the week. Again the home team gives up 4 goals and while they improve on their offensive output from the previous game they still send the home fans away sad.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes loses 2 games at home this week. The defense was consistent in that they gave up 4 goals both games.
