Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A short week both on the road & at home. One game on each sheet of ice.
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND A complete & utter failure at home. 18,000 Chicago fans were in the seats & booed the home team badly at the end of the 1st period. Then they left. The score at the end of the 1st period of play was Andes 6- Chicago 0. When the 2nd period started only about 8,000 people were left in the seats. Beer vendors packed it in early & sales of hot dogs and pop were almost non-existent.

Final Score: Andes 9 – Chicago 4

Labatts 3-Star Selection:

Star 2: AND – Mike McEwen 2G
Star 3: AND – Stan Smyl 1G, 2Pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: What a joke. A fire sale is about to take place. Make offers on anyone & everyone!
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week for the Ducks. It’s against the Andes Mountaineers. The Ducks may have 20 more points more than Andes so far this season but the Mountaineers have nonetheless beaten the Ducks 2 of 3 so far. Every game is big for the Ducks as they are battling for a playoff spot in the very competitive Prince of Wales Conference
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS One player was the story of this game as you will see. A wild, chippy, game it was. Andes took a 1-0 lead early in the first on a goal by Brent Sutter. 10 minutes later the Ducks tied it on a goal by RICK MIDDLETON. Remember the name! With one second to go in the period McDonald shoots and MIDDLETON tips it in – his second goal of the game and the Ducks lead 2-1 after one.

Second period – Jim Fox scores at the 22-second mark to tie it at 2-2. Then at the 55-second mark, the Ducks take the lead again on a goal by you guessed it – MIDDLETON – a pure hat trick for the Ducks star right-winger who now has 35 on the season. Then slightly over a minute later, the Ducks make it 4-2 when guess who? – MIDDLETON scores AGAIN. His FOURTH GOAL of the game and there are only 2 minutes gone by in the second period! Middleton scored three goals in 2 minutes and 1 second! Just when it looked like the Ducks were going to run away with this one Andes defenseman Larry Murphy did his Middleton imitation scoring unassisted at 11:01 and then unassisted AGAIN at 14:17. 4-4 in a crazy game! Second-period scoring was far from over as Dennis Potvin lit the lamp for the Ducks at 15:35 only to see Brad Park score for Andes with 36 seconds to go. 5-5 after 2 periods!

Third period: Tight checking in the period and no one has scored through the first 10 minutes. Then at 11:58, it’s Tony Currie getting the score for the Ducks and it’s 6-5 New Castle. Andes is pressing now – but its the Ducks who get the rush going and at 14:49 Pederson passes to McDonald who passes to MIDDLETON WHO SCORES YET AGAIN. FIVE GOALS FOR MIDDLETON! 7-5 Ducks. Clock winding down now and Andes still pressing – just over 2 minutes to go and it’s Potvin starting the rush giving it to McDonald who gives it to MIDDLETON AND YES – BELIEVE IT – HE DOES IT YET AGAIN. SIX GOALS FOR MIDDLETON – the most by a player in a game this season and (I believe) an all-time MWOTHL Record for most goals in a game. Aaron Broten scored for Andes with 14 seconds to go to make the final 8-6.

THREE STARS (Guess who’s #1)
1- NCD- Middleton 6 GOALS!
2- NCD Dennis Potvin 1G 2 A 3 PTS
3- NCD- Barry Pederson FIVE ASSISTS!

Pederson’s 5 assists were the most in a single game this season. CapJack’s Bryan Trottier also did it earlier this season. And Pederson’s 5 points also tied for the most points in a game this season EXCEPT for Middleton’s record-breaking 6 point performance in this game.

61 PIM in this one as there were 2 fights and a couple of misconduct penalties. Andes LW Willi Plett had 17 PIM, a fighting major (fought Schoenfeld), and then a holding penalty followed by a misconduct when he refused to leave the ice! Ducks Pat Boutette had 15 PIM with a 5-minute fighting major (fought Larry Murphy) and misconduct.

Pederson won 20 faceoffs (of 36) as the Ducks won 56.5% of the faceoffs. Each team had one power-play goal.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks win their one home game with a memorable performance from Rick Middleton. They now await the results of their three road games including big intraconference games with the Moose and the Legend
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Rangers have 3 games this week and they are all home. First up is the Moose – the best team in the league! Let’s get through that one before we host Charlestown and Syracuse.
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CAPJACK RANGERS They’re not the best for nothing – they top the offense and power rankings (and points). That being said, Scotty Arniel beats Melanson 39 seconds into the game to give the Rangers the quick 1-0 lead. The Moose fought hard in the period firing 11 at Weeks and he stopped them all – until the final minute when Quinn nails a wrist shot to tie the game.

That last-minute goal in the 1st seemed to ignite the Moose and they treated the Rangers like “fudgies” (even though we were in the Garden) and blew up the 2nd period scoring 3 goals – and even strength, SH, and finally a PP goal. Propp got the 1st one, Rogers the 2nd (both of those unassisted), and O’Connell gets the PP goal.

Trottier tries to lift the Rangers spirit with a goal in the opening 27 seconds of the 3rd – but that was all the Moose would let the Rangers get away with. MacLean then adds a goal in the 2nd half of the 3rd and the 5-2 score holds up as the final. The Rangers tried hard but never seemed to have any control after the 1st. In fact, the MIM outshot the Rangers 13-5 in the final period.

STARS (all MIM)
1. Propp 1 goal, 2 assists
2. Quinn 1 goal
3. Rogers 1 goal

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Well with Charlestown coming to town and smarting after the big loss to Mackinac Island, the Rangers hold a tough practice and after it the attitude around the clubhouse was Ooh, and it’s alright and it’s coming on
We gotta get it right back to where we started from. So back to basics…And boy did that work. They come out in the 1st dominating play and taking 12 shots on Don Edwards and Edwards fails to stop 3 of them, 1 by Wickenheiser, then 1 by Ludzik halfway through the period, and then with the Rangers on a PP, Ludzik scores again with 5 seconds left in the period. However, that last-second goal didn’t seem to deflate the Chiefs, rather it lit them up (or the booze in the locker room) – whatever, they were coming out strong and then lit up the scoring lamp twice in the 1st half of the period. Kisio nails a PP goal and then Nattress scores. So we end the 2nd with a 1 goal game, Rangers up 3-2.Ooh, and it’s alright and it’s coming on, We gotta get it right back to where we started from was the mantra in the locker room and sure enough, it worked again as the Rangers controlled the 3rd, scoring two – DeBlois and Crowder (PP) – and the Rangers pull away to win 5-2! Resch was steady stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced in the game.STARS (all CAP)
1. Ludzik 2 goals
2. DeBlois 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Crowder 1 goal
Nichols wins 15 faceoffs for Charlestown. 42 minutes of penalties in this one. Boutilier leads the way for Charlestown with 7, Beck takes 6 minutes for CapJack.
GAME #3: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Syracuse is sporting a solid steady team and they are in the hunt for a playoff spot so they have a lot on the line but the first period belongs to Haworth and the Rangers as his goal is the only score in the 1st. But Larouche scores 5 minutes into the 2nd to tie it up. That gets the Rangers on edge and 35 seconds are Larouche’s goal, Trottier scores for the Rangers. A minute 15 seconds later, Ludzik scores and CapJack takes a big 3-1 lead. But Syracuse – namely Larouche – fights back and gathers a loose puck, takes it behind the net, and does the wraparounds and he pokes it under Resch’s stick for his 2nd goal and cuts the Rangers lead to 3-2 with 3:40 to go in the 2nd! But 30 seconds later Kromm scores for CapJack and the lead is back to 2 goals at 4-2.

So – the 3rd-period starts and the Rangers concentrate more on defense and manage only 6 shots, but the Bulldogs fire 12 times at Resch. But most are not quality and then in the final minutes they come with 6 attackers and that results in a Trottier EN goal (his 2nd goal of the game) and a big 5-2 CapJack lead – and that is the final. Millen was able to turn aside 30 shots for Syracuse, but he faced 35.

STARS:
1. CAP – Trottier 2 goals
2. SYR – Larouche 2 goals
3. CAP – Kromm 1 goal, 1 assist

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 games – 4 points. Not too bad, but we were dominated by the Moose, we need to find ways to control those top teams. More practice. The oddity of the week – all three games were by a score of 5-2! (too bad we didn’t have the 5 in all of them)
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Riding a 5-game home winning streak, the Stags welcome Texas and Pittsburgh this week to Cobo Arena.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags extend their home winning run to 6 games, with a 5-2 victory over the Brahmas. The game featured a hat trick by Dave Babych (the last goal into an empty cage) and 3 helpers from Mark Messier.
GAME #2: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Struggling Pittsburgh ends Michigan’s home ice victory streak with a 4-3 win in Detroit. John Ogrodnick’s 30th coming late in the third period made it a one-goal contest, but the Stags could not beat Wamsley for the equalizer. With a better showing from Fuhr, the outcome may well have been different.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Michigan continues to make a decent showing in their inaugural season, but consistency still remains on the horizon.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Playoff possible team clash in northern Michigan as New Castle and Texas come up for some hockey and ice fishing. The Moose welcome Tom Lysiak back from the DL after 5 weeks recovering from the infamous lower-body injury.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose is on the board first after a Potvin penalty, as Beers is open close in. Ducks kill off another minor before Walter evens the score just under 8 minutes to go. Moose kill off 2 minors and we go to the first break tied 1-1

A penalty-filled 2nd period sees 2 minor fights, Ducks kill off 2 minors, Moose kill off one minor, and then can’t quite kill the 2nd one late, as Potvin scores with just under 2 minutes to go. Off to intermission with the Ducks up 2-1.

3rd period opens slowly, then the Moose tie it up on a Beers blast, just under 14 minutes to go. Ducks kill off the only 2 penalties in the middle of the period, and just as we get to full strength, Middleton puts the Ducks up. Time winding down as the Moose try to get something going. It takes a pulled goalie and 6 on 5 to make it happen as Maruk saves the day in the final minutes with a goal to tie it a 3, and we are off to some free hockey.

The Ducks control action early and get shots on goal but nothing in. In a final push, the Moose get one last push and Quinn finds the open gap for the winner with only 2 tics left.

Final Moose 4, Ducks 3 OT

1st star – Beers 2G 3pts
2nd – Quinn 1G 2pts
3rd – Potvin 1G 2pts

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose come out firing on all cylinders. Stop all 12 shots by the Brahmas, and convert 3 of 9 shots to goals, with Beers, Lysiak, and Kurri putting 3 on the board by 1st intermission.

Things cool down a bit in the 2nd as the Moose only get one more goal, from Lysiak. The defense stays spot on and keeps Texas from scoring. 4-0 heading to the 3rd.

Texan on the board early, taking advantage of a MacLean cross-check. Taylor with the score. Maruk responds 4 minutes later to take any doubt away as it’s 5-1. Lowe adds one late for the Brahmas to make the final 5-2

1st star – Lysiak 2G 3pts
2nd Kurri 1G 2pts
3rd Maruk 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Lysiak welcome to be back with 3 pts in 2 games. 2 wins against good teams is a good indicator for the future. Eddy Beers with 3 goals shows we have another scorer ready to contribute.

Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Drakes play two against the Stags and the Chiefs
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Dallas gets on the board early with a nice goal from Andy Brickley, the Drakes keep the Stags off the board until 10:07 on a goal from Tomas Jonsson, and this game stayed knotted at 1 going into the 2nd intermission. Mark Messier scores on the power play to put the Stags up at the 5:41 mark and Grant Fuhr turns away shot after shot until Greg Gilbert ties the game up at the 17:44 mark for the Drakes. Dave Babych scores less than 40 seconds later to give the Stags the lead and with the goalie pulled John Ogrodnick ices it for the Stags 4-2.
GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. DALLAS DRAKES Ron Dugay gets the scoring started at the 6:47 mark as the Drakes take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Joe Mullen adds to the lead on a great Power Play deflection on a shot from Rob Ramage to give the Drakes a 2-0 lead. Rich Preston scores for the Chiefs to cut the lead to 2-1 as the second period comes to a close. Greg Gilbert puts the Drakes up by 2 but Mike Krushelnyski scores for the Chiefs at 19:13 with Edwards on the bench. With the goalie still pulled Bobby Gould puts the game away for the Drakes 4-2
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Splitsville
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints take on the Mountaineers in their lone home game this week.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Andes Mountaineers
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Andes scores a goal early as Larry Murphy scores his 7th. No goals in the 2nd period.

In the 3rd, the Saints get back-to-back goals by McCarthy and Jarvis. Picard scores for Andes to tie it.

With 56 seconds to go, McCarthy scores his 38th for the Saints as they take the lead. Then, incredibly, Andes scores with 2 seconds to go. Goulet scores his 31st goal.

The game goes to OT, and no one scores.

Andes 3 SCS 3

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes and SCS fight to a 3-3 tie.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes week 14. One home game on the docket versus against Adams member Michigan. Both teams enter the game at the bottom of their respective divisions.
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: Michigan Stags
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS The Mountaineers and Stags play an identical game minus one thing. The boys from Iron state jump out to a 4 – 1 lead before the Mountaineers score a couple of goals to make it respectable. For the Stags John Ogrodnick scored 3 Goals and Mark Messier 4 Assists.

Star 1: MIC Ogrodnick 3 G
Star 2: MIC Messier 4 A
Star 3: MIC Gardner 1 G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes continues to struggle at home lately. What chances there were of the playoffs are fading away. But sometimes it’s fun to play the role of spoiler for other teams.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game at home this week against the Norris leading (well, tied) New Castle. Texas is already looking towards next year in what has become another abysmal season in the Lone Star state.
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS Things start out well for Texas as Nilsson gets his 15th on the season on the power play. Middleton ties it at 1 at the end of the 1st period and nets his second for a 2-1 New Castle lead after 2. Sutter returns from a hand injury suffered in the 2nd period to tie the game at 2, where it stands at the end of the 3rd. As the crowd settles in for a good 5 minutes of bonus hockey, Hickey has other ideas and ends it for New Castle 51 seconds in. Boo.

3 Stars

1. Middleton (NCD) 2G
2. Hickey (NCD) 1G
3. Sutter (TEX) 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Things are not good in Fort Worth. At least things are going well in Dallas…..
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Brooklyn visits Portland for a single game of the week
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Portland jumps out to a 1st period 2-0 lead on goals from Gretzky (47) and Ciccarelli (22). The second period was scoreless and early in the third Brooklyn got on the board with a goal from Valentine (6) but Portland responded with Fogolin (3) goal 2 minutes later. Not giving up Brooklyn pulled within one on a goal from Wilson (4) but the Sasquatch responded again with 2 more goals in the last 25 seconds from Hunter (18( and Ciccarelli (23) to win 5-2

Star #1: Ciccarella 2 goals 1 assist
Star #2 – Gretzky 1 goal 2 assists

Lemelin had 35 saves as Brooklyn outshot Portland 37-18

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland wins their lone game of the week
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome FOUR opponents to Legends Arena this week. It is an opportunity to make a charge after the first-place Mackinac Island Moose.
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 7, CHA 6 (OT)

Steve Yzerman’s goal at 1:58 of overtime capped a furious comeback as Ohio defeated Charlotte, 7-6. Yzerman’s dramatics were set up by goals from Tony Tanti and Tim Kerr, 33 seconds apart, in the final minute to force the extra session.

Ray Bourque added a goal and three assists to the winning effort. Charlotte was led by Dale Hawerchuk’s hat trick (goals 21, 22, 23). Three times in the contest the Dynamo built two-goal leads.

Both goaltenders (Mike Liut for Ohio and Doug Keans for Charlotte) registered 26 saves. Each team collected a power-play goal.

GAME #2: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 5, PIT 2

The Ohio Legends finished the third period with three goals, breaking a 2-2 tie and skating away with a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh. Tim Kerr had a pair of third-period goals and had two assists earlier, to pace the Ohio attack.

Tony Tanti had a goal and two assists for Ohio, while Thomas Steen had a pair of assists for Pittsburgh. Mike Liut stopped 28 shots in picking up his 20th win of the season. Rick Wamsley turned away 33 shots while absorbing his 30th loss.

GAME #3: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 3, CHI 1

Tony Tanti finished his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 46 seconds remaining to seal the win for Ohio, 3-1, over Chicago. Mark Howe’s first-period goal opened the scoring and was the lone tally for the Underground.

Mike Liut stopped 23 shots in the win, while Bob Froese kicked away 13 shots in the loss.

GAME #4: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. OHIO LEGENDS NCD 7, OHIO 6

A three-goal second-period explosion helped propel the New Castle Ducks to a 7-6 win over Ohio. The Ducks held a 5-2 lead after two periods before a furious finish let the Legends creep to within one.

Denis Potvin collected two goals and two assists to lead New Castle. Tony Currie added two more goals for the winners and Bobby Clarke had a pair of assists. Tony Tanit had a hat trick for the Legends and Bill Barber added four assists in the losing cause.

Ohio outshot New Castle, 44-27, but the Ducks converted four of seven power-play chances to collect the victory. Bill Smith picked up the win with 38 saves. Mike Liut received the loss with 20 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio has a productive homestand, winning three of four games this week. This firmly puts the Legends back into the race for a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The last place Spirit hopes the hot dogs aren’t completely rotten yet… they have nitrates. They should be good for a while, right?? Well, at least the beer is cold… ish.

Anyway – one home game this week against the St. Clair Shores Saints

GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Wilf “Late” Paiement scores a pair (22, 23) to further market himself as trade bait to a contender, and the Spirit gets a rare win by a final score of 5-4!!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: When asked about winning the game, a clearly drunk Coach Tom Atkins asked “We played tonight?”
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Brooklyn goes 2-1 at Home
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The slow climb to .500 continued for the Charlotte Dynamo, following a dreadful start to the season. The Dynamos, surging as of late, hosted two first-place opponents in Norris frontrunner Dallas and Adams-leading Mackinac Island as the month concluded
GAME #1: DALLAS DRAKES VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO In a game to remind you this was the height of the 80s, Dallas (a fitting opponent given the TV Ewing’s penchant for excess during the decade), and Charlotte traded off no less than 17 goals and combined for 76 shots, all in regulation. Simply said, fans who went to the bathroom or concessions missed a swath of scoring. When the dust finally settled in this barnburner, Charlotte emerged victorious 9-8.

Each team accounted for at least two goals in every single period, and the busy hero of the game was Charlotte’s Dale Hawerchuk who continues to soar up the MWOTHL scoring leaderboards. Hawerchuk turned in a hat-trick (including the game-winning goal) and three assists to total six points and he also won 15 faceoffs.

The Dynamo overcame a 6-5 deficit after two periods with three unanswered goals, capped off by a Hawerchuk goal with 4:56 left in regulation to put the Dynamo ahead 8-6. From there, the teams, traded goals: Marcel Dionne closed the gap for Dallas with a goal with 1:24 left in the third, but that was answered by a Hawerchuk empty netter with 44 ticks left in the third. Joey Mullen scored a scant 22 seconds later for the Drakes who simply ran out of time during that final minute, in a game where no lead was safe.

Dallas, which outshot Charlotte 40-36, was led by Patrik Sundstrom with two goals and three assists for five points. Defenseman Paul Baxter had four assists for the Drakes and Dionne added three helpers.

Three stars:
Star 1: Hawerchuk 3 G, 6 Pts, 15 FO won
Star 2: DAL Sundstrom
Star 3: CHD Charlie Simmer 2 G, 3 Pts

GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Charlotte’s offensive explosion against Dallas was offset in the following game against Mackinac Island. The Dynamo could not solve Moose goalie Roland Melanson, who, with his play in the nets, proclaimed there would be no shootout on this evening, saving 32 in a 4-0 shutout of Charlotte.

Melanson was a rare first-star goalie and he deserved it, especially after stopping six Dynamo power-play opportunities, and also considering that the Moose were outshot 32-17.

The game was for all intents and purposes was decided following an early checking from behind penalty by Charlotte fourth-line goon Perry Anderson that led to a game misconduct and kept the Dynamo shorthanded all evening. Following the ejection, Brian Propp cashed in on a power-play goal 5:59 into the first, assisted by Dan Quinn and that was all Mackinac Island really needed.

Propp scored his second goal with 9:30 left in the second period (also assisted by Quinn) and Jarri Kurri followed up with two more Moose goals – one late in the second and a power-play tally 1:50 into the third. Charlotte goalie Alan Bester struggled, saving just 13 while surrendering all four Moose goals.

Three stars: all MIM
1. Melanson (32 saves)
2. Kurri 2 G
3. Propp 2 G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte splits at home against two-first place teams, including a loss to the squad with the best record in the league in Mackinac Island. The Dynamo have written off any hopes for the Patrick Division title as CapJack runs away with it. Charlotte will have to reach .500 first, then gain ground on St. Clair Shores in the Adams if it harbors any playoff hopes.
