Cochrane and Jonsson started it off with a fight a minute and a half in – so the blood boiled over quickly. Foster and Russell got into a scuffle near the end of the 1st. Those were all the fights, but there were 5 roughing minors including one by Grant Fuhr. Babych and Pettersson opened the 2nd period with coincidental rough calls 17 seconds in the period. The 3rd period was the quietest with the Rangers getting 2 minor penalties, but that was enough to affect the outcome.

The Rangers wanted this one and fired 14 shots on Fuhr in the 3rd – there were still fuming over his actions earlier. But he stood tall and stopped them all. But Ogrodnick took advantage of the Ranger’s 1st penalty in the period and scored the goal ahead (and game-winner) 2 1/2 minutes in. Gardner added an insurance goal for Michigan in the latter part of the period and the Stags hoof off the ice 4-2 winners!

Things changed 6 minutes into the 2nd when Poulin scores for the Dynamo putting the Rangers down 1-0. But the way the Dynamo played after that goal – 4 straight minor penalties, you’d think CapJack would climb back into the game. Well, they did. On the 3rd penalty (Moller’s 2nd committed right after finishing his 1st), Haworth nets a tying PP goal. But that was the only PP goal they could muster but DeBlois netted one with less than 2 to go and the Rangers skate off the 2nd up 2-1.

Dave Hunter gets Charlotte back in it with a goal 4 minutes into the 3rd and it’s 2-2. Then we see some more penalty action from Charlotte. Boschman goes off for Charlotte for cross-checking and while he’s gone the Dynamo score not one, but TWO short-handed (SH) goals. The 1st from Fergus on a breakaway and the penalty kill team of Hunter (goal), Poulin, and Laidlaw combine for the 2nd and a big 4-2 Charlotte lead! But right after the penalty expires the Rangers get one back when DeBlois scores. Then a minute and a half later, Sittler scores and it’s tied up again at 4-4. BUT – Charlotte isn’t done and they quickly (less than a minute) regain the lead when Anderson scores to make it 5-4 Dynamo. Final minute and a half, Resch leaves the ice, the Rangers gain control and Silk puts in a backhander to tie it up. A minute left. Charlotte calls time. The game resumes, Dynamo wins the faceoff but as Hawerchuk was working it in the zone, Beck hits him and the Rangers gain the puck Trottier shots – save Bester stops it. 22 seconds left, Rangers win the faceoff, Trottier slaps one, Bester gets a piece of it, but not enough and it’s a goal. The Rangers up 6-5 and they hang on in the closing seconds for a big win!

The Moose clean up their act in the 2nd, avoiding penalties, but the Sasquatch stays true to their roots and act all Sasquatchy, racking up 3 penalties. And that results in 2 PP goals for the Moose as Lysiak and Beers score with the advantage. In between those 2 goals, Eaves scores one at even strength, and the Moose have flipped the advantage, heading to the 3rd period with a 3-1 lead.

After an early skirmish between Howe and Ladouceur, Portland rebounds with a pair of goals. First Foligno and then Ciccarelli, both assisted by Gretzky, and we are tied at 3. An elbowing penalty by Maruk puts Portland at the advantage and Perreault finds an opening to take the lead back with just under 10 minutes to go. Portland then flips the script and thanks to a penalty by Carbonneau, it’s Kurri with a PP goal, under 5 minutes to go, and we are at a nail-biting 4-4 tie. The crowd reacts with each and every shot down the wire and the Arean explodes with joy when Propp pokes one in, just under 30 seconds to go to give this one to the Moose in a very lively match-up.

2nd period opens with a …………. another fight, this time Yzerman and Beers. Moose kill off yet another penalty before evening the game at 1 with a goal from Eaves, who with his 2nd goal in 2 games is happy to be on the 1st line until Dan Quinn returns from injury. Ohio kills off a minor right after the goal, and then one more skirmish between Carlyle and Bothwell ends the fight card for the night, and we go to the 3rd period tied at 1.

Ohio kills off another minor early and then MacLellan puts the Legends up 1. A Carlyle penalty opens the door for the Moose who walk through and MacLean ties it at 2 with 14 minutes to go. A Maruk penalty turns the tables in the Legend’s favor, but the Moose is up to the task and kill it off. Kerr puts Ohio up for the 3rd time with a goal at the halfway point of the period. The tense crowd is now really into this battle as the clock winds down, and the Arena erupts when a pulled goalie gives the Moose the advantage they need to see MacLean score the tying goal with only 82 seconds left in the game. But all the scoring is not over and the Moose have a defensive lapse seconds later that results in Tanti blasting home the winning goal for Ohio with only 44 seconds on the clock and the Arena deflates like a popped balloon and the last second futile attempts by the Moose are brushed aside by the Legends who triumphantly skate off the ice.

The third period got interesting as Portland manages to draw within 1 when Gagne (5) scores with 5:21 remaining. Needing to tie the game the Sasquatch pull their goalie and Foligno (13) gets a goal with 59 seconds remaining. Not finished yet Wells (2) gives Portland their first lead with only 22 seconds remaining. With the crowd feeling confident Texas silences them when Sutter (16) scores to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period Siltanen (11) fires from the blue line 3:20 into the extra time to give Portland the home win

The clear hero of this game was Dynamo left-winger Laurie Boschman, who notched a late hat trick entirely in the third and assisted on three other goals. He recorded the even-strength game-winner with 1:46 remaining in the third, on an assist by Dave Langevin.
Chicago scored the first four goals of the contest and led 5-1 before Charlotte rallied, beginning with an

Anders Hedberg goal with two seconds left in the first period. Rick Vaive led the way for the Underground with a pair of goals, including the one that tied the game at 7-7 with 5:15 left in the third.

The Saints overcame a 2-1 deficit with four unanswered goals second-period goals, including two by left-winger Tom McCarthy, the first star, and the teams played scoreless in the third, combining for just eight shots. Bengt-Ake Gustafsson contributed three assists for the winning side, and Tom Barrasso had 25 saves, 22 of those in the first two periods as the game hung in the balance.

Bernie Federko’s game-winning exactly halfway through the game gave St. Clair a 3-2 lead.

The Dynamo’s Alan Bester, part of a three-goal committee, shined again in the net with 26 saves in improving to 10-8-1 and edging out losing Brooklyn Goalie Greg Stefan (23 saves and just 3 goals yielded to a pretty formidable Dynamo offensive lineup).

Charlie Simmer’s game-winning goal 1:30 into the second proved to be enough, but the game remained close until two goals by Dale Hawerchuk and Tom Laidlaw in the last 1:30 of the third period.
