1983/84 SKATER & GOALIE OF THE WEEK #16

Brooklyn changed all that with a Gartner goal 3 minutes into the period and then Sutter scores just past the midpoint and now the Rangers are on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. But have no fear, DeBlois is here as he scores to tie the game with 2 1/2 to go. But that was it for regulation and we skate off to OT.

Johnson (Brooklyn) ends the game a couple of minutes in when he slips a wraparound below the glove of weeks to end the game and send the Rats home the 3-2 winners!

Coach Tom Atkins, after an unknown amount of stale beers, said while eating a pretzel… “this is simply the best pretzel I’ve ever had”

A Canadian paper headline read “Spirit Coach Tom Atkins calls pretzel ‘The Best'” but in French, it read “L’entraîneur Tom Atkins qualified le bretzel de ‘Lemieux…'”

Two home games this week against Chicago and playoff contender Syracuse. Plus a road game against Chicago which was played here at the request of the Underground coach

New Castle outshot Chicago 37-28 as Bobby Clarke scored twice and Barry Pederson, Andre Savard, Jere Gillis, Rick Meagher, Rick Middleton, and Mark Osborne each scored as well. Two of the goals were on the power play as Chicago’s goalie Bob Froese was under pressure all game.

Defenseman Mark Hardy had 3 assists. Pederson won 15 of 24 faceoffs. Dan Bouchard made 27 saves in the win.

Lanny McDonald (25), Tony Currie (11), and Mark Osborne (17) made it 3-0. Then in the third John Tonelli (19) made it 3-1 at 11:22. In the final minute-plus, the Bulldogs pulled goalie Millen and pressured Bouchard. Pierre Larouche scored with 47 seconds to go – his league-leading 48th of the year! With the extra attacker on, the Bulldogs peppered Bouchard with shot after shot in the final 47 seconds but Bouchard stood tall as the Ducks felt lucky to come away with the win.

Andre Savard scored twice (12,13) for New Castle. The other scorers were Dennis Potvin (20), Pat Boutette (10), Middleton (43), Clarke (17), Tiger Williams (13), Osborne (18), and Pederson (26). Two of the goals were on the power play.

In the 2nd, Murray and Federko score to tie the game for the Saints.

We go to the 3rd, McCarthy scores no. 46, but Ohio scores 2 straight – Tanti and Barber score. Late in the 3rd, Federko scores for the Saints to tie it.

In OT, Kerr scores his 24th goal to win the game for Ohio.

Mark Taylor and Lane Lambert score for the Saints in the 2nd. The Moose scores 2 in a row to close out the 2nd, Kurri and McLean do the honors.

Ken Linseman’s fifth goal of the season with 23 seconds remaining broke a 4-4 tie and helped Ohio rally from two goals down at the start of the third period, to win 5-4.

Tim Kerr’s 28th goal with six seconds left gave Ohio the 6-5 victory.

Left-winger Charlie Simmer led the way for Charlotte with two power-play goals (the first and the last of the contest), and six other Dynamo players combined for one goal apiece. The Dynamo lead reached 6-1 by the 16:21 mark of the second period after fourth-line left-winger Perry Anderson scored a shorthanded goal, just his second of the year.

The Rangers, showing the mettle of a defending champion, fought back gamely with three goals by forwards Keith Crowder, Alan Haworth, and Lucien DeBlois before the Dynamo put the finishing touches on this one with third-period goals from Dale Hawerchuk and Simmer.

Fortunately, however, Charlotte’s on-ice product was top-notch on this evening: Charlotte blew out Pittsburgh with four goals in the first and two more in the second and cruised to the 6-1 victory.

Second-liners Dave Poulin and Laurie Boschman scored two goals apiece during the rout and the Dynamo chased Pelle Lindbergh (five goals against just six saves) three minutes into the second period in favor of Rick Wamsley. The Spirit actually outshot Charlotte 28-19 but could only muster an unassisted Steve Payne goal with 12 minutes left in the game, that broke Alan Bester’s bid for a shutout.

2nd period opens up with a much more entertaining fight between Wilson and Ladouceur, and each gets 5 minutes to cool down. The Saints then get a little too aggressive, picking up 2 minors, which they kill off. A smaller skirmish between Stevens and Ladouceur precedes a minor on Ruskowski. In the end, it’s a repeat of the 1st with the Moose having a 16-8 SOG advantage for the period, but nobody with any lamps lit. 0-0.

A Murray penalty is quickly killed by the Saints. But a Ladouceur (again !?!?!?) penalty breaks the bank, and McCarthy breaks the stalemate with the first goal of the game. Stevens and Campbell are in a little skirmish right after the goal. Moose get the equalizer with 9 minutes to go when Kurri finds an opening in close. No more damage and we go to overtime. Both teams with a few SOG in OT but nothing finds paydirt, and the game ends in a 1-1 tie.

2nd period is another pretty even session. Both teams killed off 2 minors and nobody scores.

3rd period sees the final penalty of the game killed early by the Moose. Shortly after, it’s Messier again with a goal to break the tie. Moose are unable to convert any attempts in the final 15 minutes and the crowd goes home unhappy drunks. Not something good to see.
