WEEKLY SUMMARY: Once again the game made a player active (Krush) that I had inactive. Frustration with this game is high.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ducks are HOT, having won 7 in a row, 10 of 11, and 13 of 15. In fact, New Castle has only one loss in the last 15 games (the other no-nwin was a tie) and now leads the division. After having trouble scoring in the early going, the Ducks are on fire and have moved way up on the leader board in terms of goals scored. This week, two-division games, against Chicago and a BIGGIE against second-place Dallas.
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS Mike Bossy scores in the first period and repeats it in the second (35) to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. But the Ducks counter with five unanswered goals to win it 5-2. Pederson, Ramsay, Osborne, Middleton, and Currie got the goals for New Castle, as the Ducks outshot the Underground 37-21.

THREE STARS:
1- CHI Bossy 2G
2- NCD Mark Osborne 1G 1 A
3- NCD Barry Pederson 1G 1 A

Chicago’s Richard Brodeur made 32 saves. Mid-season acquisition Dan Bouchard continued his terrific play in the net for the Ducks. Since joining New Castle on Jan 5, Bouchard has gone 10-1-1.

GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS A very surprising one-sided game as New Castle continues to display tremendous firepower, winning this one 8-1. Ducks superstar Barry Pederson had a terrific game as he scored a goal (32) and had FIVE assists. His six-point game and five assists tied for the league-best in both categories this season. Rick Middleton had two goals and is now one shy of the 50 goal mark. Lanny McDonald also scored twice (28). The Duck’s #1 line of McDonald-Pederson-Middleton combined for five goals and seven assists.

Ducks had a 39-23 SOG advantage as Billy Smith improved to 21-9-2. Glen Hanlon was pulled after allowing 6 goals. Roberto Romano gave up the final two.

THREE STARS:
1- Pederson 1G 5 A 6 PTS
2- Middleton 2G 1 A 3 PTS
3- McDonald 2G 1 A 3 PTS

Dennis Potvin had 3 assists plus his 21st goal. It was a bit of a chippy game with two fights. Jim Schoenfeld had 15 PIM with a fighting major and misconduct

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks continuing their winning ways, taking both games at home. With two road wins this week, the Ducks have now won 11 in a row, 14 of 15 and 17 of 19. New Castle leads the Norris Division and suddenly finds themselves competing with Mackinac Island, CapJack, Portland, and Ohio for the league’s best record
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game against St. Clair Shores, the team immediately ahead of them in the standings. What a monumental disaster!
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS The Stags were leading 4-1 with 11:08 to play, and then the roof fell in – -T. Murray (18:16), Federko (19:04), S. Stevens (19:13), McCarthy (3:09 of OT)!!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The only good thing that can be said about this fiasco is nothing.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only one home game this week as the dastardly Gretzky leads Portland into the Cow Patty. Portland is currently leading the Smythe while Texas….is not.
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS The first 7:55 of this game was really good! Then, it went downhill fast for the good guys. Perreault, Hamel, Gagne, Gretzky, Gretzky and Gretzky score in the first to make it 6-0 Portland after 1. And just for giggles, Gretzky gets his fourth in a row to make it 7-0 midway through the 2nd. Nilsson scores to make it 7-1, and the comeback is on! Ha! The rest of the game is scoreless, which is kind of a win for Texas, right?

3 Stars
1. Gretzky (POR) 4G
2. Hamel (POR) 1G, 1A
3. Gagne (POR) 1G, 1A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: I got nothing on this one. Gretzky has 57 goals on the year. I swear 50 are against Texas.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three home games. A new shipment of hot dogs and fresh beer thanks to a truck that “lost” their shipment on the way to CapJack… 😉
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Someone forgot to tell us that we were supposed to lose against the 1st place Rangers as we skate to a 5-2 surprise win! Must have been the fresh hot dogs and beer!
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT Back to reality, losing in the final 1:08… 4-3 Dynamo win.
GAME #3: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT This is more like it… Brooklyn wins 7-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: One surprise win, two not surprising losses.

Hot dogs and beer for all!

Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: It’s a busy week for the Mountaineers as we will be hosting all 3 divisional rivals.
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Portland is safely ahead of the expansion Mountaineers by 21 points and 19 points ahead of 2nd place Texas. It will take a major collapse at this point for them to lose the division. Brian Sutter puts the home team on first on the scoreboard at the 16:53 mark. 35 seconds later the Squatch strike back as Dino Cicarelli takes a pass from the Great One to tie things up. Portland outplays the Mountaineers in the initial period but finds themselves all tied up. The second period is a chippy affair for both teams. While on a PP Goulet scores the 2nd goal for the home team as Michel Goulet scores his 39th of the year. A minute later Fogolin ties it up for the visitors. 90 seconds later they take the lead 3 – 2 as Perreault scores the go-ahead. That lead doesn’t last long as Brian Sutter gets his 2nd of the game a minute later. With 1:11 left in the period Brian Sutter earns a hat trick. In the third period, Sutter tallies his 4th goal 3:38 into the period. Just past the halfway mark Sutter pulls Portland within 1 and almost 2 minutes later Crossman ties things up at 5. Gagne again puts Portland back ahead with 5 minutes to go. The rest of the game is pretty much uneventful and Portland leaves with a hard-fought 6 – 5 win.

1st Star – Sutter
2nd Star – Goulet
3rd Star – Perreault

GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS 2nd and 3rd in the Smythe battling it out for position. Taylor puts the Brahmas up early into the first. Keith Acton will double that lead about 7 minutes in. After playing short-handed constantly for the next few minutes Gilmour finally gives the home fans something to cheer about as he brings them within 1. The first half of the second period is pretty humdrum but with 7:11 to go McCelland scores the 3rd goal for the visitors. Halfway through the 3rd Nillson bumps the lead up to 3 and it’s quiet in the arena. Sutter is able to pull the home Mountaineers within 2 with 8:16 left in the game. Korn is able to get the lead back up to 3 with about 6 minutes left. What fans had been left in the arena now had a reason to leave for home. Russ Courtnall scores his first goal for Andes in the final minute. Texas outplayed us from the beginning to the end.

1st Star – Nilsson
2nd Star – McCelland
3rd Star – Acton

GAME #3 – VISITING TEAM: Charlestown Chiefs
GAME #3: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS 3rd and final home game of the week and again it’s a battle for position. A quiet first period ends with 1:21 as Chiefs center Malone puts the visitors ahead to open the scoring. It takes a while but 13 minutes later Pouzar ties it up for the Mountaineers. Twenty seconds into the final frame Preston quickly puts the Chiefs back in front. With just 1:18 left in the period, Gilmour ties things up for the Mountaineers. The score stays 2 – 2 for that final minute and then it’s everyone’s favorite thing. Free hockey!! Unfortunately, the home fans will leave the game unhappy as Nicholls puts it past Sauve to win it for the Chiefs.

1st Star – Preston
2nd Star – Nicholls
3rd Star – Edwards

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes host 3 opponents this week, all divisional opponents. Two of the three games are decided by 1 game but in each one, the visitors leave the arena with the win.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Rangers still trying to get good chemistry as they march toward a post-season berth, and still working on keeping a rested squad. Two games this week at home, Charlotte and Brooklyn.
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. CAPJACK RANGERS A Valentine’s Day matchup with the Dynamo and Charlotte quickly showed they would not be sending the love. 54 seconds into the game, Crawford lights the lamp for a 1-0 Charlotte lead. Less than 4 minutes later Fergus makes it 2-0. A SH goal from Pettersson cut it to 2-1 but Simmer restored the 2 goal lead with a late one and the 1st period ends with the Dynamo up 3-1.

In the 2nd there was only one goal, but it was from Trottier (who’s in a dogfight for top scoring honors) who chipped away at the Dynamo lead with a PP goal. 3-2 Charlotte after 2.

2 1/2 minutes into the 3rd and Robinson scores a PP goal for CapJack to tie the game. So far, the 3 goals are 1 SH and 2 PP goals! But that tie is broken a minute and a half later as Moller scores and the Dynamo retake the lead, 4-3. Charlotte continues their hot play of late and the home crowd is getting antsy. 5 1/2 minutes after the Charlotte goal, newcomer Alan Haworth responds with the Rangers’ first even-strength goal of the game-tying it up again at 4-4. The teams and goalies buckle down but 6 seconds before the announcer signals 1 minute left in regulation, Trottier and the Rangers score on a concerted effort in the Charlotte end. The Dynamo brings out the kitchen sink but Resch and the D hold tight. Funny how he has his moments of brilliance. The Final has the Rangers on top 5-4!

The Rangers have been updating their style of late – in this game they shelled Keans with 49 SOGs in a 16-16-17 outpouring! Only 4 blocks by Charlotte so not much black and blue to take home. Rangers spent so much time shooting that Charlotte only (only?) got 25 SOGs – but 4 of those went in.

STARS (All CAP)
1. Trottier 2 goals
2. Robinson 1 goal, 2 assists
3. Pettersson 1 goal

GAME #2: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Bring on the Rats! Oh, be careful what you ask for!
We get a lot of penalties on this team and sure enough, period 1 opens, the puck is dropped and Trottier gets called for hooking in the opening minute. Housley responds for the Rats with a PP goal and a 1 zip lead. Petterson ties it up 10 minutes later and the 1st period ends in a 1-1 tie. Then the roof caved in (figuratively). The Rangers fail to return to the ice for most of the 2nd period. Sittler scores 4 minutes in to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. The bench explodes in celebration and then they sit on their hands as Brooklyn rattles off 4 straight goals in the next 10 minutes. Harris starts the barrage, then Bourne and Johnson score PP goals (they were 3 for 4 on the PP in the game) and Stastny ends the binge with his goal. 5-2 after 2.And as the 3rd continues, Valentine scores against his old team for a 6-2 lead with 17+ minutes to go. Something tells me Weeks won’t be playing the whole period (heck seems like he took off a bunch of the 2nd period). The Rangers haven’t thrown in the towel and finally, they quit sitting on their hands. 30 seconds after Valentine’s goal, Trottier connects making it 6-3. We get into the final 9 minutes and Sittler scores and suddenly 6-4 doesn’t look too bad. But Brooklyn bears down, digs in, and gets tough. But a potential break for CapJack comes when Stastny gets whistled for tripping with 2 1/2 to go. PP – and as the PP unfolds, Weeks leaves for the 6-4 advantage, and with 48 seconds left, DeBlois scores a PP goal and it’s 6-5! Teams back at full strength, time running out and Weeks is still off the ice and the Rangers control the play after Johnson with the faceoff for Brooklyn then Trottier takes over the game. Puck goes to Berglund, Trottier drills him. Rangers can possession, over the line, to Trottier, slappers but Stefan saves it with his blocker, rebound, ends up back to Trottier, who slaps it and it goes in the top shelf and we have a tie with 30 seconds to go!So we go to OT – and after all those goals, this 5 minutes of play ends with nothing going in – so it’s a 6-6 tie! (well still better than a loss)
Rangers again go heavy on the offense with a SOG tally of 20-14-18-5 for 57 while Brooklyn fires 23 on Weeks (6 going in!). Rangers figured out it was actually better to not get penalized as the Rats were 3 for 4 – but for the Rangers that’s a hard thing to accomplish.STARS
1. CAP – Trottier 2 goals, 1 assist
2. CAP – Sittler 2 goals 1 assist
3. BRO – Bourne 1 goal, 1 assist
Stefan did make 51 saves!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 of a possible 4 points so it was a decent week. The defense is still way under par (which is only good in golf!).
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game at home
GAME #1: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. DALLAS DRAKES This game played like a dead puck era game, with no goals in the first period, and Ron Duguay scores at the 2:58 minute mark in the second. The score stayed that way until the third period and Randy Gregg scored at the 12:27 mark as Dallas wins 2-0 behind a shutout by Glen Hanlon
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Drakes get 2 points at home
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS Bottom Dwellers Battle sees Pittsburgh lower Brooklyn 3-1
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Bottom Dwellers Battle sees Pittsburgh lower Brooklyn 3-1
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends welcome a pair of Adams Division foes this week.
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. OHIO LEGENDS OHIO 4, SCS 3

Doug Wilson netted a pair of goals for Saint Clair Shores, but it was not enough in the 4-3 win for the Ohio Legends. Each team scored three third-period goals, after one was scored in the first two frames.

Mike Liut picked up the win with 25 saves and Tom Barrasso absorbed a hard-luck loss with 35 stops.

GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. OHIO LEGENDS MICH 4, OHIO 3

Mike Bullard’s 43rd goal of the season midway through the second period gave Michigan a 4-0 lead, as the Stags held on for a 4-3 win over Ohio. For the second straight game, the Legends scored three third-period goals–but came up short in this one.

Tony Tanti delivered his 52nd goal in the loss. Eddie Mio turned away 36 shots and Pat Riggin backstopped 20 for Ohio.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A split for the week keeps Ohio in the thick of the playoff race.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The entire Adams Division comes to the Island this week. No love at all in the house. Ohio, St. Claire Shores, and Michigan.
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Tight even 1st period with a goal for each team. Wilson with a rare goal, and Tanti from Ohio. 1-1

Ohio takes the lead first, with Bourque scoring. Moose answered with 2 as MacLean on the PP and Propp a minute later to make it 3-2. Bourque with another near the midway point to tie it at 3. After that, it is all Moose to the end with 2 goals from Kurri, MacLean, and Eaves with one each.

Final Moose 7, Ohio 3

1st star – Kurri 2G 4pts
2nd – MacLean 2G 3pts
3rd – Bourque 2G

GAME #2: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose roar out of the gate and own the action with 4 goals (Kurri, Propp, Rogers, Beers), 4-0 with 15 minutes to go in the 2nd. A real battle at the start of the 2nd sends 4 guys to the sin bin for 5 minutes each.

Saints completely flip the script and rattle off 4 goals of their own (Wilson, Francis, McCarthy, Gustafsson) and we are tied at 4 with one minute to go in the game.

Moose answered with a goal just seconds later, Ladouceur with a prayer. Saints pull the goalie and then a quick turnover results in an empty netter for the Moose to finish it off at 6-4.

1st star – Beers 1G 2pts
2nd – Propp 1G 2pts
3rd – Wilson 1G 2pts

GAME #3: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE The tight 1st period sees just one goal. Ogrodnick puts the Stags up 1-0 at the break.

2nd period is a great back and forth with both teams getting 2 goals. Propp and Lysiak give the Moose a 2-1 lead. Ogrodnick and Turgeon then take the lead back. 3-2 Stags heading to the 3rd.

3rd period is all Moose. Kurri, Beers, Propp, and an empty netter for Eaves late to make the final 6-3 Moose.

1st star – Propp 2g 4pts
2nd – Beers 1G 4pts
3rd – Lysiak 1G 3pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A big homestand is a good rebound after last week’s 2 goals in 2 games.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland hosts Texas and Charlestown
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Texas opens the scoring in the 2nd period on a goal from McCourt (12) but Portland gets two third period goals from Dupont (1) and Gretzky (54) to win 2-1

Lemelin saves 26 shots for Portland

GAME #2: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Portland jumps out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from Ciccarelli (32) and Cyr (7). Charlestown responds in the second period when they get 2 power-play goals from McKegney (26) and Malone (7). In the third period, Gretzky (55) scores with 1:20 remaining but the Chief’s Coffey (25) ties the game with just 13 seconds remaining.

In the Overtime period, Ciccarelli (33) ends the game :53 seconds into the extra time and Portland wins 4-3

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland wins both games at home
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: To start off with the good news for the Charlotte Dynamo (I’m a glass is half-full kind of guy so we’ll start there): entering the week the team had already eclipsed its number of wins ALL OF LAST season with 27. The bad news: despite a solid winning record and sizzling late-season run, Charlotte was well on the outside looking in terms of playoffs and would have to leapfrog two teams in the Adams division, with every single team there owning a winning record and possessing more points than Charlotte as the week started (to the powers that be: can we consider expanding the playoffs just a smidge?)

My impassioned plea for playoff expansion out of the way, the Dynamo hosted two games this week against Patrick rivals, entertaining the first place CapJack squad that seemed a lock for the division title, as well as third-place Brooklyn.

GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo seized a 5-1 lead, sparked by two Glenn Anderson goals, but then needed to hold off a furious late third-period rally by the Harbor Rats to prevail, 6-4.

For the first 50 minutes of the game, there were hardly any Brooklyn highlights with the exception of a shorthanded Rick Lanz goal 4:31 into the game that had answered a Charlotte goal from Charlie Simmer and tied the score at 1-1.

The two Anderson even-strength goals that followed along with even-strength tallies from Dave Poulin and
Dale Hawerchuk then lifted Charlotte to the four-goal lead. However, with 10 minutes left in the third, the Harbor Rats created some tense moments for their hosts: goals by Chris Valentine, Bobby Smith, and Dave Christian, the last coming with 1:09 left in the third, closed the gap to 5-4. Only Charlotte defenseman Joel Quenneville’s empty netter with :50 to play squelched any hopes of a sensational and dramatic Brooklyn comeback.

Three stars: all Charlotte
1. Anderson, 2 G 5 Points
2. Hawerchuk 1 G and three assists
3. Simmer, 1 G, and an assist

GAME #2: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO Unlike the win over Brooklyn, in Charlotte’s home game against division-leading CapJack, a Dynamo collapse became swift, total and complete: Charlotte held a 3-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second period, then proceeded to yield five of the next six goals, and a pair of empty-net goals by the Rangers’ Lucien DuBois in the last minute sealed an 8-5 Bathgate win that made the result seem more one-sided than it really was.

CapJack’s Bryan Trottier, on pace for 50 goals, led the rally with a pair of goals, including an even-strength game-winning goal with 8:32 left in the third period that gave the Rangers a safe 6-4 lead (he also finished with four assists). Charlotte’s Tom Fergus scored with 3:29 left in the final period that narrowed the Dynamo deficit to 6-5, before DeBlois scored the two empty netters that notched a hat trick.
He attained the quite rare “only second-star” nod for a three-goal game.

Chico Resch recorded 22 saves for the win as the Rangers outshot Charlotte 29-27.

Three stars: all Rangers
Star 1: Trottier 2 G, 6 Points
Star 2: DeBlois, 3 G
Star 3: Jean-Francois Sauve 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte splits two at home and loses both ends to division-leading CapJack in a home-home series. The CapJack defeats all but ended any Dynamo hopes for the Patrick crown. If there is any solace, it is that the deserving Rangers proved with no doubt to be the superior team as illustrated by these defeats of Charlotte.
